Liverpool fans fume at Jarrod Bowen update

Some Liverpool supporters have bemoaned an update regarding the Reds’ interest in Jarrod Bowen, with many not keen to sign him this summer.

Jurgen Klopp is hopefully working hard on signing a few more players in the transfer window, in order for Liverpool’s squad to withstand the type of injuries that affected last season so much.

The exit of Gini Wijnaldum to Paris Saint-Germain has left a void in the middle of the park, but reinforcements could also be made further up the pitch.

Another wide man could potentially be brought in to rival the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota, possibly playing more of a squad role and filling in when the former pair depart for AFCON in January.

One player who has been linked with a summer move to Anfield is Bowen, who shone for West Ham last season, scoring eight goals in the Premier League.

According to the Liverpool Echo [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], senior Anfield sources have not ruled out links regarding Bowen, suggesting there could be legs in the rumour.

Naeem saves Bangladesh the blushes

An 82 from Naeem Islam saved the visitors from an embarrassing defeat after they were reduced to 36 for 5 in their second innings

Cricinfo staff13-Sep-2008ScorecardAn 82 from Naeem Islam, the Bangladesh Cricket Board Academy captain, saved the visitors from an embarrassing defeat after they were reduced to 36 for 5 in their second innings against the Sri Lanka Academy. A draw seemed imminent when play started on the fourth and final day – Sri Lanka started with four wickets in hand in their first innings – but after nine wickets fell in 12.4 overs, a win for the hosts looked likely.Resuming on 376 for 6, Sri Lanka managed to add only 21 to their overnight score. Medium-pacer Ziaur Rahman took two of those wickets: Nadeera Nawela added just one to his overnight score of 60 before he was dismissed by Rahman and Chaminda Vidanapathirana fell for a duck. Mahbubul Alam got rid of Akalanka Ganegama, who scored 40, while Suraj Mohamed didn’t bat and was retired out.Having conceded a lead of 44 in the first innings, Sri Lanka’s bowlers capitalised after the opener Mahbubul Karim was run out for 8. His partner Imrul Kayes was caught-behind off the very next ball off Ganegama, and three deliveries later, Roshan Fernando made it 25 for 3 when Shamsur Rahman also offered a catch to the keeper Kaushal Silva. Ganegama struck two more blows in his first spell to leave Bangladesh tottering at 36 for 5 after 10.1 overs.Naeem began the rescue job along with Suhrawadi Shuvo. The two added 50 in 16.3 overs for the sixth wicket before Ganegama bowled Shuvo for 29. Naeem played out the overs effectively along with the lower order. Wicketkeeper Ashiqul Islam scored a 33-ball 26 in a stand of 65 with Naeem, which lasted 14.2 overs. Sri Lanka’s bowlers were to be frustrated further as the No. 9 Ziaur hung around 52 balls for his 10, as just 31 runs came in 17.5 overs. Bangladesh’s innings folded soon after Ziaur’s dismissal. Naeem was the last man out; he played out 183 balls for his 82. Ganegama, who has played four ODIs for Sri Lanka, finished with four wickets.Sri Lanka’s target was 235, but they faced only 12 overs before the match ended. Alam got rid of the openers, removing Yohan de Silva for 2 in the first over, before the game finished in a draw.

Sheffield Wednesday confirm Kamberi signing

Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed Florian Kamberi’s arrival at Hillsborough.

What’s the latest?

In a statement posted on the club’s official website, Wednesday confirmed that they had secured a season-long loan deal for the centre-forward, who joins from Swiss top-flight outfit St Gallen subject to international clearance.

The 29-year-old is the Owls’ seventh signing of the summer transfer window, with Darren Moore having already made the additions of Dennis Adeniran, Olamide Shodipo, Jaden Brown, Jack Hunt, Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Lewis Wing.

The statement added that the signing of the Albanian was made in order to bolster the club’s attacking options ahead of the new League One season, finishing by wishing Kamberi luck for his spell at Hillsborough.

Moore will be buzzing

Considering just how short Moore’s Sheffield Wednesday squad had been in terms of attacking options, with only Callum Paterson available as a natural centre-forward, the addition of Kamberi ahead of the Owls’ League One opener against Charlton next weekend is sure to have left the manager buzzing.

While the last couple of seasons have been rather turbulent for the 29-year-old, the striker has proven that, when he is settled in a team, he has what it takes to hit the back on the net on a regular basis.

Indeed, in the last full season he spent with a single club – with Hibernian back in 2018/19 – the £495k-rated man impressed over his 33 Scottish Premiership appearances, bagging eight goals and registering five assists for the club.

The Albanian also scored four goals and provided one assist over six appearances in the Europa League qualifying rounds that year, netting once and registering one assist over three Scottish Cup fixtures – taking his total haul for that season to 13 goals and seven assists over 43 appearances.

As such, if Moore can get such form out of Kamberi next season, the centre-forward could well play a starring role in Wednesday’s hunt for an immediate return to the Championship, something which is undoubtedly the aim for the 47-year-old and his team.

Ex-England int’l drops big Rice verdict amid £100m exit claim

Carlton Palmer insists that Declan Rice is not worth over £100m despite reports linking him with a huge move away from West Ham United this summer.

Rice is reported to have rejected two contract offers from the Hammers as he waits to see if bids are tabled for him.

Manchester United and Chelsea have both been linked with a swoop for Rice, who is said to be valued at over £100m in this transfer market.

Indeed, the England international enjoyed a superb European Championships, forming an exceptional partnership with Kalvin Phillips in midfield as the Three Lions reached the final.

But Palmer is not sure about Rice’s ability and believes that he is nowhere near the ability of either Roy Keane or Paul Ince, who both played for the Red Devils and are players he considers a benchmark when it comes to defensive midfielders.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, the ex-England international said: “I’ve watched Declan in the Euros and I think he’s a very good player but there’s something that’s just not right for me there. I know people are putting him at the level that they’re putting him at but it just doesn’t seem right for me.

“I look at a centre midfield player, I look at Roy Keane, I look at Incey, do I put him in the same category as those players? I don’t think so. I don’t think he’s even close to those two so they’re talking £100m and £150m.”

As reported by Cricinfo last month, Cricket Kenya has launched an investigation into the team’s recent poor performances and reports of indiscipline on the tour of England last July.A three-man task force will carry out a fact-finding mission to establish the current position as related to the standards, management and performances of the national cricket team. In addition, there will be an assessment of the policies and programmes of CK in their promotion, development, welfare and performance of the national cricket team as well as the administration, facilities, finances, resources and capabilities within the board. They will also look at results over the past 12 months and every aspect of the management and performance of the national squad. The structure regarding players’ pay is also likely to come under scrutiny after increasing disquiet that considerable increases in pay have not been matched by results. The task force will report back to the CK executive with recommendations in all areas under review. The three members of the task force are Jasmer Singh, a long-standing administrator who was also communication and publication manager for the old KCA; Phil Toye, the current chairman of Kenya Kongonis; and Sharad Rao, Kenya’s representative on the ICC’s Code of Conduct Commission with wide experience in international legal and sports panels, including the Commonwealth Games Federation.”The task force is mandated to carry out a detailed inquiry into various matters including the results of matches played over the past 12 months and the overall performance of the team players,” said Tom Tikolo, CK’s chief executive, in a statement. “It will also report on the structure, performance and responsibilities of the national team’s selection and coaching staff and make recommendations on remunerations for the contracted players.”

Palmer: Ake ideal makeweight for Spurs in Kane to Man City deal

Former Premier League star Carlton Palmer believes that Tottenham Hotspur should try to bring Nathan Ake into the club if they sell Harry Kane to Manchester City.

The striker was absent from training all last week as he attempted to force through a move to the Etihad Stadium this summer.

City are reportedly willing to pay £130m to sign the England captain, while other reports have outlined their desire to potentially include players in any deal.

Various options have been touted, including Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva, but Palmer thinks that Ake could be seen as an attractive option by Spurs in any potential swap deal.

Ake has struggled at times to force his way into Pep Guardiola’s plans and he made just 10 Premier League appearances last season as City won the title.

He cost them £40m and has the ability to play at full-back or at centre-back, and Palmer believes he could be a smart addition for the north London giants.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “There’s Ake there, the centre-back, he’s not featured much. They paid £40 million for him, they need a centre-back, there’s three or four players there.”

Shaun Tait will adopt a cautious approach to playing over the rest of the season after adding a hamstring strain to his list of injuries. Tait hurt himself during South Australia’s one-day loss to Queensland and is in doubt for Wednesday’s FR Cup match against Tasmania.”I will have to be pretty cautious now to see if I can get through the season,” Tait said in the Advertiser. “I have had tendinitis for a while and it just flared up through the four-day game against Queensland and got worse in the one-day game.”It has gradually been getting sore. I have been getting through okay then Wednesday night I was in a fair bit of discomfort and couldn’t run in and bowl, pretty much.”The captain Graham Manou said Tait would have to be managed carefully and left to decide which matches he plays. “I have another four-day game before Christmas and will just have to see how I go and if I can get through that game or not,” Tait said. “I am not sure at this stage.”I have the Twenty20s after Christmas and then it depends how selection goes with the Australian team in the one-dayers and further games for the Redbacks.” He has not played for Australia since the India Test in Perth in January, when he took a complete break from the game due to physical and mental exhaustion.

Liverpool fans mock Pep Guardiola comments

A number of Liverpool supporters have been mocking Pep Guardiola following his response to Jurgen Klopp’s comments about Manchester City’s spending.

The Reds picked up an excellent 3-0 win away to Norwich City on Saturday evening, ensuring that their Premier League season got off to the perfect start. Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah got the goals for Liverpool as they cruised through proceedings and looked every bit title challengers.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

It has been a low-key summer at Anfield and some supporters have been left frustrated at the club’s lack of spending, with Ibrahima Konate the Reds’ only signing to date. By contrast, City recently broke the British transfer record to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa for £100m.

Klopp has suggested that Liverpool don’t have the luxury of endlessly spending huge sums of money on players like their rivals do, however, which seems to have irked Guardiola.

The City manager has bitten back at Klopp’s comments [via Anfield Watch on Twitter] by defending the spending of his club’s owners and seemingly having a dig at his rival, retorting: “Some owners want to benefit, our owners don’t want any benefits. So they don’t invest in the team, while we invest what we can.

“Before there were only one or two clubs. Now there is Chelsea with [Roman] Abramovich and our club with Sheikh Mansour. They want to be buying into football. What is the problem? We have limits for Financial Fair Play and if they don’t agree [with City’s spending] they can go to court and make a statement.”
