Birmingham City: Fans react to Jefferson Montero’s tweet

Jefferson Montero made his Birmingham City debut in Tuesday night’s 2-0 win over Barnsley, replacing Alvaro Gimenez in the 80th minute.

The Ecuadorian may not have scored, but he certainly gave a sign of what he can do for Blues going forward, as he twisted the opposition defenders inside out.

To the delight of many, he then went and tweeted a mini-montage of his exploits on the pitch:

Many Bluenoses are thrilled to see him join the club, though another part some fans picked up on is the reference to Chucho.

Christian Benitez represented Birmingham 36 times, scoring four goals and assisting six times, as per Transfermarkt, becoming a much-loved figure in the process.

The wide sense of feeling is that if Montero can reach the same sort of level his countryman did in Birmingham then he will also become a very popular figure at St. Andrews’.

A selection of Twitter reaction to the video, including posts from appreciative Birmingham fans, can be seen below:

Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum shares a funny video with Sadio Mane

[ad_pod ]

As the Reds are awaiting the next fixture in their new 2019/20 Premier League campaign, which will be against Arsenal on August 24, the spirits seem to be extremely high back in the camp.

But that is not really a big surprise, is it?

Jurgen Klopp’s troops have certainly started the new season exactly the way they wanted to. After two games played, they tallied all six available points, smashing Norwich City in the curtain-raiser and then just snatching the victory against Southampton.

The only minor stain on a so-far perfect record is the defeat in the Community Shield against their bitter rivals, Manchester City.

But they are most likely not really concerned about that one and they sure seem in a rather good mood, especially if we take into account their latest social media activity.

Georginio Wijnaldum has shared a really funny Instagram video depicting a conversation between him and Sadio Mane.

His teammate seemed to be explaining something rather thoroughly and Wijnaldum was just laughing next to him.

He even asked the fans to get creative and add their own subtitles for the footage, which will, no doubt, make the situation even funnier than it already is.

Leeds’ triple substitution a ruthless decision from Bielsa

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Leeds suffered their first defeat of the season on Tuesday night, albeit on penalties as they exited the Carabao Cup.

The Whites went 2-0 down in the first half in what was a sluggish period out of character with some of their displays this term.

However, they fought back through Eddie Nketiah and Helder Costa before eventually losing 5-4 on penalties.

Jack Harrison was the unfortunate man to miss from 12 yards as Stoke went through to the next round.

But to have any chance of getting to penalties in the first place, Marcelo Bielsa had a large say on proceedings.

On the chalkboard

Leeds made eight changes to their starting XI to face the Potters on Tuesday night as a number of fringe players got their opportunity.

Alfie McCalmont was rewarded with his first start whilst Mateusz Bogusz earned his senior team debut for the Whites.

On top of that, Jamie Shackleton and Jack Clarke, more regular members of the side last season also played.

Despite that, three of those individuals were withdrawn at the break in what was a ruthless tinker from Bielsa.

He clearly wasn’t happy with the way things were going and as a result, he took off McCalmont, Shackleton and Clarke.

Making all three substitutes at the break is rather unusual but on this occasion, it paid off, even if they did lose on penalties as Harrison, Ben White and Adam Forshaw were introduced.

The stats either side of the break demonstrate just how great an impact the Argentine’s methods had.

After the first half, Leeds had 64% of the possession, failing to have a single shot on target whilst they only played 199 accurate passes, per stats based Twitter account LUFC Data.

However, in the second period, they had 76% of possession whilst having three shots on target. Meanwhile, Leeds managed to play 295 accurate passes.

The comparison between the two was stark and that was largely down to the way Bielsa changed things.

Taking off three of your most inexperienced players was ruthless but it was ultimately the right call.

Liverpool fans pleased to see Harvey Elliott included in Champions League squad

[ad_pod ]

Harvey Elliott has only been at Liverpool for a matter of weeks but he has been drafted into their 29-man squad for the Champions League, much to the delight of the fans.

Even more remarkable is the fact he is only 16 years of age, so if he does feature in group stage matches against Napoli, Red Bull Salzburg and KRC Genk, then he would become one of the youngest players to feature in the Champions League.

The former Fulham man currently holds the record for the youngest player to appear in the Premier League after featuring for the Cottagers in May, and it appears Jurgen Klopp also thinks he may be ready for the senior stage.

By comparison, Trent Alexander-Arnold was the youngest member of the squad to be included last year – he was 19 at the time of the announcement – but he was already an established first-team player.

That shows what a great achievement it is for Elliott, and highlights the impression he has already made at Anfield despite his youth and limited time there.

Here are the reactions from some excited Liverpool fans to the news.

Crystal Palace send scouts to watch Russian striker Artem Dzyuba in action

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Riafan, Crystal Palace sent scouts to watch Artem Dzyuba in action as Russia took on Scotland in a UEFA European Championship qualifier, whilst Everton and Wolves also had representatives present.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the powerful Russian striker managed to find the back of the net against Steve Clarke’s Scotland side in front of the aforementioned Premier League clubs’ scouts, as he helped his country to a vital 2-1 win.

Dzyuba now has six goals in five European Championship qualifiers following his latest strike, whilst he has already grabbed four goals and recorded three assists in just eight Russian Premier League matches so far this season.

The 6-foot-5 frontman is certainly an experienced figure with 37 caps for his country, 148 appearances for Zenit St Petersburg and 158 for Spartak Moscow, although he wouldn’t be a good signing for the Eagles.

Steve Parish still not learning his lesson

Back in the summer, we detailed how Palace chairman Steve Parish still hasn’t learned his lesson amid links to ageing Premier League stars James McCarthy and Nathaniel Clyne.

The article outlines how Palace have a number of players who are either 30 or over, or are approaching the landmark age, and states that this transfer approach is not a sustainable one.

So, if the news that they are lining up a move for 31-year-old Dzyuba is true, it would serve to suggest that the Eagles still haven’t learned their lesson in recruiting younger players who would be able to improve and net them a healthy profit when they eventually move on.

Signing the almost-veteran Dzyuba would potentially fill a gap up top for a few years, before he becomes a problem that needs to be moved on – most likely for peanuts, if any fee at all.

Wolves’ midfield regression can partially explain dismal PL opening

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Wolves’ season so far has had two very contrasting elements.

In the Europa League, they have mounted a historic run into the group stages, winning all six of their qualifying matches including an impressive two-legged victory over Serie A outfit Torino.

Whilst in the league, to say they have struggled would be an understatement.

The west Midlands club are yet to record a victory and last weekend’s 5-2 drubbing at the hands of Chelsea saw them slip closer to rock-bottom in the table.

If you don’t know the words to the Joao Moutinho chant in the video below, are you even a real Wolves fan?…

Nuno Santo managed to guide the club to a seventh-place finish last campaign, in what was their first season back in the top-flight in seven years after lifting the Championship in 2018.

The added strain of competing on the European continent has clearly had a significant impact already with the vigorous group stages only just starting later this week.

So where has it gone wrong?

On the Chalkboard

One area of the pitch that has drastically underperformed is in midfield.

The trio of Ruben Neves, Leander Dendoncker and Joao Moutinho are central to Santo’s three-at-the-back system working. They almost hold it all together.

Last season, they looked in another world – but so far this campaign, things just haven’t been up to scratch.

All three midfielders have been much worse with the ball at their feet, regressing on the number of passes made as well as on their passing accuracy.

Moutinho is the playmaker of the side. He recorded the most assists during 2018/19 with eight, and the number of passes he averages per game has lowered substantially from 49 to 37.4 – that’s a considerable drop in regards to his involvement.

The 33-year-old has also seen a decrease in the number of long-balls he plays, only adding to his creativity woes so far this campaign.

Dendoncker and Neves are mostly defensive-minded midfielders, yet they have seen a similar pattern in the focal points of their respective games.

Watch Wolverhampton Wanderers Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The Belgium international’s average number of completed passes per game has dropped from 31.9 to 23.8, whilst he has been far less effective in the tackle – a decrease of 2 per game from last season, which you’d imagine has been a massive reason as to why opposition players have been able to get the better of Wolves so far this season.

Neves, who has been courted by reigning champions Manchester City in the past, has also underperformed greatly – his passing accuracy rate has dipped by nearly 10% with his presence on the pitch seemingly nullified through a lack of interceptions too.

Santo will need to find a way to get these three going or their Premier League hopes will dwindle away just as quick as these midfielder’s stats have.

Leeds’ summer window evidence of errors made under Radrizzani

[ad_pod ]

Andrea Radrizzani has helped alter the face of Leeds United, so much so that he almost changed the club’s crest last year.

After a vehement protest against the change the decision was reversed but on the pitch and indeed at board level he has significantly improved matters.

Leeds were a side languishing in mid-table of the Championship but they now sit at the high end of the division after narrowly missing out on promotion and achieving a playoff place in 2018/19.

Two years prior to that, however, Radrizzani took full ownership of Leeds, buying it outright from controversial owner Massimo Cellino.

It was a watershed moment for the Whites who are now firmly back on the right track, albeit without the Premier League to compete in.

The Italian businessman has put the west Yorkshire club back on the map and added the acquisition of Elland Road to his successes as he put the stadium in Leeds’ control for the first time since 2004.

However, on the transfer front, it hasn’t always been plain sailing.

The decisions they took in the summer – only bringing in six loan players – were a sign they may be learning but, ultimately, it was a major indictment of mistakes made in the market since he arrived.

Last week Managing Director Angus Kinnear revealed the might of Radrizzani when he spoke about the finances involved in terms of player salary.

He told the BBC: “The biggest thing to understand is how much the wage bill has grown under Andrea’s tenure. The wage bill when he took over was for a mid-table team and there was a correlation with how much you spend on the wage bill and where you finish.”

During his first summer at the helm, Leeds brought in a vast number of players, 14 of which were permanent signings.

Some of those did turn out to be a success. Pontus Jansson won a place in the PFA Team of the Year last season whilst Mateusz Klich had a hand in 19 goals. More arrivals included Ezgjan Alioski, Adam Forshaw and Tyler Roberts, with the latter two joining in January.

Despite that, there were some rather less impressive signatures and those poor judgement calls ultimately set the tone for Leeds’ most recent transfer activity.

This summer the club had to sell Jansson partly due to financial fair play reasons and because the wage bill had grown so much. Other faces also fled the scene.

In total, 31 players walked through the exit door either on a permanent or temporary basis and that sums up how wrong things have gone with some particular incomings.

In the same interview with the BBC last week, Kinnear noted the following: “If we were to have our time again, I think we expanded the squad a little too rapidly.

“Perhaps some of those purchases we made of players who were going to be two or three years away from a first-team place and were going to develop and were younger – I don’t think we’re going to see clubs in the Championship make those sorts of purchases.”

The reason for that, so Kinnear says, is because of FFP.

The dreaded ruling has already seen Birmingham deducted nine points last campaign and despite Leeds needing to improve when Radrizzani arrived, buying players with potential, rather than just for the present, might have been the wrong approach.

In the 2017 summer window, Leeds welcomed Samu Saiz, Laurens De Bock, Haidy Sacko, Jay-Roy Grot, Aapo Halme, Caleb Ekuban, Pawel Cibicki and Yosuke Ideguchi to Yorkshire.

Coincidentally, all of the above departed in 2019 either on loan or permanently.

It appears the focus for Leeds in the summer concerned  departures as they took the approach of balancing the books and strategically improving their operations in the loan market.

Not landing anyone of note on a permanent basis in recent months could be perceived as a cause for concern, but it was due to mistakes made in the past that this didn’t happen.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

For better or for worse, over 30 players left and only six arrived on temporary terms.

It’s a tactic that has worked in the past, most recently for Aston Villa who were promoted with a host of loan players.

In their squad last term was Tyrone Mings, Axel Tuanzebe, Kortney Hause, Anwar El Ghazi and Tammy Abraham, all of whom helped them to gain promotion.

The Villans have set a mini benchmark that should give Leeds hope for the rest of the season.

So far their loan strategy has been a benefit. Ben White was named the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month whilst Eddie Nketiah and Helder Costa are pushing for first-team places after contributing to goals in the Carabao Cup.

Leeds have learnt well from their mistakes under Radrizzani and now with Marcelo Bielsa things are starting to come to fruition.

Errors may have been made but there is evidence to suggest they’re making up for it.

Everton’s Marco Silva hails "fantastic professional" Theo Walcott

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Marco Silva has praised Theo Walcott and believes he is a great example for other players in his squad to follow.

What’s he said?

Walcott has largely been out of Silva’s plans over the last few months, and this term has found himself completely out of the matchday squad on occasion, playing only 56 minutes so far. That is mostly due to the form of Richarlison, who has three goals and one assist.

Despite sitting out, Walcott has remained professional and is ready whenever Silva calls on him, and the Portuguese is impressed by the character he has shown.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Silva said: “[He is a] fantastic professional. He is an example for some of the others to look at.

“Of course, he was not happy but what I can tell you is that when the chance comes to him again he will be ready because of the way he works.”

The former Hull manager accepts that certain players, name-checking Tom Davies, will be unhappy due to their lack of game time, but made it clear that there is a right way to respond, and implied that if his players show the right attitude they will get their reward.

Role model

Since joining the Toffees in January 2018 Walcott has failed to impress fans, and therefore it is fair that he hasn’t featured too often.

Despite that, some senior pros would kick up a fuss over a lack of game time, but the former Arsenal star has done no such thing.

The likes of Davies and Mason Holgate should look up to Walcott and the positive attitude he has displayed, as there is always a chance an opportunity could come their way, as Silva alludes to.

Watch Everton Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

By comparison, Ademola Lookman struggled to deal with his frustrations whilst at Everton and decided a move away would be best, but so far he has played only once for his new team, and he faces the challenge of impressing a new manager and starting from scratch once more.

The fringe players at Goodison Park may, therefore, be better suited to biding their time, as it may not be long until they’re called upon.

West Ham United Roundup: Johnson rips into Hammers, Pellegrini’s dressing room rant, Benitez on top six

In today’s West Ham United roundup, we take a look at what news has been doing the rounds for the Hammers. Glen Johnson has ripped into the players after the defeat to Oxford United in midweek, it has been revealed what Manuel Pellegrini said to his men post-defeat in the League Cup, and Rafael Benitez has weighed in on the top six debate.

Johnson slams players for ‘not being bothered’

Report: Former England international Johnson has slated the West Ham players for ‘not being bothered’ about the game against Oxford in the Carabao Cup. He told talkSPORT: “They’ve been battered. Yes, they made changes and obviously these competitions can kick up the odd strange result, but to be hammered 4-0… that’s not just exiting the competition, that’s getting battered and destroyed.

“If they lost on penalties or it was 1-0, you think yeah, that can happen in football, but they made nine changes and were clearly played off the park by a mid-table league one side.

“I genuinely don’t get it, it’s a chance of winning trophy and a chance of winning a trophy by February.

“Clubs use it to give young lads minutes and give players who aren’t regularly playing a game, but you can do that at the same time as taking the cup seriously. You can still field a strong side and give a few players a chance.

“But to make nine changes, I think that is blatantly saying, ‘we’re not bothered, we’re just going to keep everybody fit for the weekend’.”

Verdict: It is has been 40 years since West Ham last won a trophy, and this is now the third year in a row the Hammers have been knocked out of a domestic competition thanks to a League One side. Last year saw Wimbledon beat them 4-2 in the FA Cup and the year prior saw Wigan Athletic overcome David Moyes’ men 2-0 in the same competition.

Results like this happening on a consistent basis prove the club are not taking the League Cup as seriously as they should. Despite a potential fight for the top six on the cards, the reality is West Ham are going to struggle to get into Europe, and of course, winning the FA Cup is much harder than reigning supreme in Carabao Cup.

This is a competition Pellegrini should be prioritising. If his side does indeed crack the top six, it will no doubt be classed as a successful season. However, if West Ham ends up outside the top six, and without a trophy, it will be the complete opposite.

It is still, to this day, quite bewildering why clubs of their level do not set their eyes on winning this major trophy.

Benitez on the top six

Report: In a Q&A with The Athletic (as quoted by Inside Futbol), former Liverpool boss Benitez has had his say on the likes West Ham and Leicester City setting their sights on a challenge for the top six.

The current Dalian Yifang manager said: “We talk about ‘six teams’, but for me Leicester, West Ham, Wolves and Everton can progress and challenge.

“Again, I will say Tottenham have all the experience and quality to do well and to stay in the top four.”

Verdict: Although they had such a negative result against Oxford, the Hammers have indeed laid down an early marker in their fight for the top six in the Premier League. Despite the demolition from Manchester City on the opening weekend, Pellegrini’s men have not lost in the league since and most recently registered a famous win over Manchester United, in what was made to look like a routine 2-0 victory.

On the forward front, West Ham have looked very promising and have proved to be a concern for anybody travelling to the London Stadium. Sebastian Haller has three goals in his first five games at the club, Andriy Yarmolenko has bagged twice in the early stages, and Felipe Anderson has seemingly carried on his spectacular form of last season, averaging a rating of a 7.54 rating and providing two assists.

The east London side have certainly put themselves in a great spot early on for the top six battle. But perhaps the Hammers are going to need a bit of fortune along the way with injuries and results elsewhere.

Pellegrini’s dressing room rant

Report: As reported by Football Insider, manager Pellegrini delivered a passionate rant after he was left red-faced following the 4-0 hammering at the hands of Oxford. Normally a calm soul on the touchline, the Chilean reportedly slammed his players post-match for letting him down and was ‘seething’ at his men.

Verdict: When you lose to a side 12th in League One by such a dramatic margin, somebody must take the fall. In these situations, it is too easy to point fingers at the man in charge when in reality, it’s the players who are the ones who should take much of the blame.

Players such as Jack Wilshere, Pablo Zabaleta and Robert Snodgrass are all highly experienced, with some of them boasting of FA Cup and Premier League medals. Ultimately, players in the Premier League are paid more and put on a pedestal based on the fact their ability is far, far superior to a side 75 places below them in the football pyramid, and in reality, there is no excuse for losing to them.

Truthfully, it is harsh to put the blame on Pellegrini, especially considering he has put the club in an early battle for the top six. The Hammers had 63% of the ball against the U’s, registering only nine shots compared to Oxford’s 17, and when all is considered, the Chilean had a right to express his disappointment and anger towards his players for not getting the job done.

Real Madrid: Fans want Thibaut Courtois out of the picture

Real Madrid fans took to Twitter to call for Thibaut Courtois to remain away from the first-team picture, with many of them appearing to have been disappointed by the latest update from the club.

The club’s post on their social media account provided a medical update on the Belgian shot-stopper after he was unable to complete the Champions League match against Club Brugge earlier in the week.

The 27-year-old was forced to withdraw at the half-time interval with what has been confirmed by the club as an “acute case of gastroenteritis with dehydration and electrolyte imbalance” but is understood to be responding well to treatment.

Real Madrid had acted swiftly to stamp out the rumours that Courtois was replaced by Alphonse Areola for the second half because of an anxiety attack and stated those suggestions were completely false.

Although it was good news for the player and the club in general, it would appear many of the fans on Twitter had a different view of things and subsequently decided to mock the announcement.

Plenty of them had hoped the “Official Announcement”, or “Comunicado Oficial” as has become famous with football fans, was to inform them that Courtois would either be out of the season or had been told to leave the club at the next available opportunity.

Here are just some of their reactions…
