Tottenham fans fearing the worst over Traore links

According to the Northern Echo, Tottenham and Chelsea are both interested in Adama Traore, but Tottenham fans are furious about the links.

It feels like a truly make-or-break summer for Tottenham, where the club must decide what they want to be.

If they want to take on Europe’s elite, they need to smash their wage structure, and bring in the type of players to match Mauricio Pochettino’s ambition.

If they don’t do those things, they could find themselves becoming a feeder club to bigger clubs, as the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose look to follow Kyle Walker out the door in pursuit of trophies.

Middlesbrough’s Adama Traore has had a fantastic season in the Championship, but he is certainly not a signing that screams “ambition”, and fans simply do not want the dazzling winger.

The report from the Northern Echo says Tottenham and Chelsea are both chasing the winger, and the fee could even be in excess of £30m.

Traore has averaged a remarkable 7.3 dribbles per game this season, and his end product has improved drastically as well, grabbing five goals and ten assists.

The 22 year-old speedster had a poor showing in the playoff loss to Aston Villa though, which is clearly still fresh in fans’ minds.

Traore is a great young player with bags of potential, but Spurs already have plenty of those, so what they needed is a few proven winners to take them to the next step.

Fans are echoing that sentiment on Twitter, even comparing him to this season’s scapegoat in Moussa Sissoko, and some of the best reactions can be found below…

Leeds fans praise Peacock-Farrell after international debut

Leeds fans are showing the love for Bailey Peacock-Farrell after the young stopper made his international debut for Northern Ireland.

After being called up to the under-21 side earlier this year, Leeds goalkeeper Peacock-Farrell was handed his senior international debut on Wednesday night, and kept his fine form going by grabbing a clean sheet.

The 21 year-old started in his country’s 0-0 draw with Panama, and tweeted his delight after his debut clean sheet.

[ad_pod ]

Peacock-Farrell was probably the one shining light in a miserable season for Leeds fans, after the poor form of Felix Wiedwald forced the young stopper into the limelight in the 3-0 loss to Wolves.

Despite having to wait until the last day of the season for his first Leeds clean sheet, the Northern Irishman has showed his potential since breaking into the team, and Leeds fans hope he can be their number one for years to come.

They’ve been heaping more praise on him after his first international clean sheet, and they’re clearly very excited about the youngster’s future at Elland Road.

Mark Hughes should make shock move to bring John Terry to Southampton

Mark Hughes was confirmed as Southampton’s new manager last month, and he will be keen to get to work to ensure that his new team don’t find themselves in another relegation battle following their close shave last season.

The Welshman arrives at St Mary’s in March with the south coast outfit in a precarious position with just eight fixtures remaining, but eight points from their final five matches proved to be enough to save them from the drop, with the 1-0 win at fellow strugglers Swansea City proving to be the pivotal result.

After four successive top-eight finishes, Saints’ defensive weaknesses proved to be one of the reasons why they found themselves battling against the drop, having conceded 56 times in their 38 top flight games.

12 of those came during Hughes’ spell in charge – including three each in their defeats against West Ham United, Chelsea and Arsenal – and bringing a new centre-back to the club will surely be a priority for the 54-year-old before the window slams shut on August 9.

Southampton, whose potential £13m summer deal could have big consequences on their bid to sign Quincy Promes as well as for Sam Gallagher, are yet to effectively replace two leaders and huge characters in Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk – who both captained the side – with the likes of Wesley Hoedt, Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida often struggling without an imposing and vocal player alongside them.

It is something that Hughes needs to put right this summer, and he needs to find that experienced centre-back that can guide younger players like Hoedt, Stephens and Jan Bednarek in the Premier League next season.

One player that is available is John Terry, and while it would certainly be something of a shock move given he played for Aston Villa in the Championship last term, he showed that he has still got it – he made 215 clearances and won 96 aerial duels in 35 league appearances, as per WhoScored.com.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”252976″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch 21 things that will definitely happen at the World Cup”]

The 37-year-old veteran made 32 outings before appearing in all three of their play-off fixtures, but he was unable to prevent them slipping to a 1-0 defeat in the final against Fulham at Wembley.

Terry has already announced that he will be leaving Villa Park when his contract expires at the end of the month, but even though he is without a club and is getting no younger, it doesn’t mean that it would be an easy task for Hughes to bring him to the south coast.

One of the reasons the former England international dropped into England’s second tier is because he didn’t want to play against Chelsea, and of course if he did sign for Southampton that would be the case.

The Welsh boss should look to offer the 37-year-old an extra incentive to link up with him at St Mary’s, and that could be a role as a player/coach so he can begin to prepare the future and be closer to walking straight into a Premier League job when he eventually hangs up his boots.

While it wouldn’t be widely accepted, Hughes could perhaps come to an agreement where Terry didn’t feature against the Blues if he did insist on it, but it is a decision that wouldn’t go down well with Saints supporters – especially considering he would be a controversial signing given his character and his past.

That said, convincing the 6ft 2in tall centre-back to come to St Mary’s and use his experience to help them next season could prove to be an inspired decision, and indeed Hughes’ best one of the entire summer prior to the new campaign gets underway on August 11.

Dan Potts could become key figure at Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest are considering making a move for Luton Town full-back Dan Potts, according to the Nottingham Post.

What’s the word?

Aitor Karanka is likely to be in the market for a new left-back due to the probable departure of Armand Traore.

Eric Lichaj, who predominantly plays on the right but is capable of switching, is also expected to leave, while Juan Fuentes is out of contract.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255610″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Five England World Cup games you totally forgot happened”]

The Nottingham Post claims that the Reds are monitoring Potts, who played a key role in Luton’s promotion to League One last season.

The 24-year-old signed for the Hatters in 2015 after failing to make the grade at West Ham United, where he began his youth career.

What can Potts provide?

The left-back is still young and developing his game, but he can more than hold his own having made 42 appearances in League Two last season.

Forest could do with a new face who has both defensive and attacking qualities, and Potts ticks the boxes on that front.

During the 2017-18 campaign, the Barking-born player scored seven goals in all competitions, and one of those was struck in the FA Cup.

Forest have also reportedly shown an interest in Aston Villa’s Alan Hutton, but the soon-to-be free agent is traditionally a centre-back whereas Potts fits the profile.

Everton fans are struggling to get excited about Gibson links

Everton are weighing up a move for Middlesbrough centre-back Ben Gibson, according to The Northern Echo.

The report claims Everton are understood to be willing to part with Mohamed Besic and Ramiro Funes Mori as part of the deal for the 25-year-old.

Everton have been proactive with the appointment of new Director of Football Marcel Brands and appointment of long-time managerial target Marco Silva, and the majority of Toffee’s supporters are excited by the dual-appointment.

According to a report by The Telegraph, Brands has targeted 18-year old Ajax defender Mathias De Ligt, as well as former Sporting Lisbon winger Gelson Martins.

These potential additions were treated with mass excitement by Everton supporters but links with the Middlesbrough defender have not been given the same fanfare.

Whilst some fans have recognised that in his season in the Premier League he was subject to praise from Boro fans, most see it as the addition of a squad player rather than the improvement of key positions.

Liverpool fans keen to sign James Rodriguez following Colombia display

Liverpool are no strangers to being linked to James Rodriguez, but some fans’ desire to sign him has strengthened following Sunday’s performance at the World Cup in Russia.

The attacking midfielder has been on Real Madrid’s books since 2014 following his impressive display at the Brazil World Cup.

[ad_pod ]

In recent seasons, though, the 26-year-old has dropped down the pecking order and as a result was sent to Bayern Munich on a two-year loan.

Rodriguez remains at the Bundesliga outfit, but there has been talk about his long-term future.

Liverpool are in the market for an attacking midfielder as they are yet to replace Philippe Coutinho, who signed for Barcelona in January.

Lyon star Nabil Fekir has been the rumoured top target, but after the deal allegedly fell through, fresh targets have been mentioned.

On Sunday, Rodriguez, who is valued at £63m by Transfermarkt, was one of the stars of the show as he created two assists in a 3-0 victory for Colombia over Poland in Group H.

On Twitter, some Liverpool fans urged the club to make a move for the attacker.

Opinion: Swansea should target free-agent Jerry Mbakogu to bolster attacking options

[ad_pod ]

Swansea City boss Graham Potter must make a move for Leeds United target Jerry Mbakogu after the summer exodus at the Liberty Stadium.

What’s the situation?

Swansea currently sit in seventh place in the Championship after their first six games yielded 11 points from three wins and two draws – representing a good start for the recently relegated side.

Former Ostersunds boss Potter was brought in over the summer after Carlos Carvahal was sacked, and the 43-year-old new man quickly set about transforming his squad with a number of young players coming in and the old guard being shipped out.

In terms of strikers, Borja Baston, Andre Ayew and his brother Jordan Ayew were all loaned out by the Welsh club this summer.

All of this means that the Swans now only have Oliver McBurnie and Courtney Baker-Richardson as recognised strikers, with Wilfried Bony still sidelined through injury and new signing Joel Asoro being preferred out wide.

Bargain signing

If Potter is keen to add another striker to his squad he could do far worse than Mbakogu, who was linked with a move to Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds in the summer transfer window but is now a free-agent after leaving Italian side Carpi in the summer.

The 25-year-old Nigerian has played most of his football in Italy and has a career record of 63 goals in 243 club appearances. While this may not be fantastic, Mbakogu is yet to hit his prime and his signing could prove to be a masterstroke from Potter if he is able to come good.

So, Swansea fans, would you like to see Potter make a move for Mbakogu to add to your striking options? Have your say by voting in the poll below.

Circumstances mean Arsenal must take this Spurs clash seriously

The Capital One Cup is a competition most Premier League managers will feel they can take or leave, without much remorse or regret in the case of the latter. Although involvement in all four fronts until the latest stages possible is the ultimate ambition of every club, the truth is that the level of risk often outweighs the realistic reward.

Last season’s footballing calendar saw two Premier League fixtures, the second leg of the Champions League’s round of 16, the quarter-final of the FA Cup and the Capital One Cup final in the space of a fortnight in March, providing an insight into why no Premier League club has ever claimed the quadruple and, probably, never will.

Despite the unrivalled level of finance in the English game, the ferociousness of competition throughout its pyramid prevents personnel and resources from being adequately stretched over all four formats. Unfortunately, the COC doesn’t top the agenda for the managers of England’s biggest clubs distracted by league and European titles.

Throughout his near two decades as Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger has never won the League Cup, telling all about his apathy towards a tournament he usually employs as a development ground for the Emirates outfit’s ever-promising academy products.

He’s by no means alone in that mindset; Sir Alex Ferguson won it just four times from 27 attempts and when he did, it was usually due to Manchester United enjoying a relatively easy run until the semi-finals. At which point, he’d take the chance to add to the Old Trafford trophy cabinet a little more seriously.

So under more regular circumstances, not too much importance would be attached to Arsenal’s first Capital One Cup fixture of the season this evening. The two consequences are either more game time for the youngsters and fringe players with the eventual opportunity of silverware, or simply one less game the Gunners need to worry about every fortnight or so. Considering the club’s almost conspiratorial relationship with injuries, hardly a bad thing.

Yet, now facing bitter local rivals Tottenham after back-to-back defeats, tonight’s clash at White Hart Lane verges upon must-win territory for the Gunners. The must-win cliché gets bandied around a lot; nobody dies, football clubs don’t instantaneously combust and managers are rarely sacked immediately after not winning the must-wins; but in the context of the last few games and extrapolating onto the rest of Arsenal’s campaign, you fear the long-term effects a third loss in the space of just seven days could have on morale.

The defeat to Chelsea last Saturday was a harrowing blow. Wounded, weakened and with captain John Terry benched, it was unquestionably Wenger’s best chance yet to finally get one over Jose Mourinho in a competitive fixture. But the Gunners lost their heads as Diego Costa’s on-pitch atrocities went unpunished by Mike Dean; yet another Groundhog Day defeat at the hands of the west Londoners ensured amid two sending-offs.

Disappointment surrounding the result was amplified by Dynamo Zagreb’s shock win over the Emirates outfit the Wednesday prior; a team who previously hadn’t won a Champions League fixture from their last 15 attempts, spanning all the way back to 1999.

So with the trip to Leicester City on Saturday in mind, it’s vitally important Arsenal return to winning ways tonight. Although they’re yet to face competition of the north London outfit’s calibre this season, the King Power Stadium outfit’s league standing – two points and one position better off than the Gunners – tells all about their form. There’s also the small issue of Riyad Mahrez, the Premier League’s joint-top scorer, most prolific dribbler and second-top assistor after six games, not to mention the Foxes’ knack of staging miraculous comebacks, claiming nine of their twelve points this term from losing positions.

But before the Midlands visit can even be considered, there’s the obstacle of Tottenham to deal with first. In addition to representing the need to claim vital bragging rights that will galvanise the fanbase, having failed to beat Spurs during the 2015/16 campaign, the Lilywhites are also a barometer of this Gunners side’s capabilities. Defeat to the out-of-sorts reigning champions has already put Arsenal’s title credentials under severe scrutiny, so loss at the hands of Tottenham – a team whose ambitions for the season end at Champions League qualification – would suggest even their top four status may not be as clear cut as assumed in the summer.

Of course, changes from both sides will be expected this evening. It possible neither will put out full strength starting Xis with the matter of the Premier League at the weekend – Spurs facing table toppers Manchester City at 12.45pm on Saturday.

But regardless of the quality of their own or the opposition’s personnel, another defeat, this time at the hands of local rivals, could have dire consequences for an Arsenal side who appear to have lost their groove. Whilst Wenger may be apathetic towards the competition itself, advancement to the next round verges upon imperative. Defeat, on the other hand, might lead to murmurings of a crisis developing at the Emirates.

Why this Arsenal man is England’s best option right now…

After what seems like forever, Theo Walcott is finally being deployed as a centre forward at Arsenal, and funnily enough, it appears to be working. Brought to the club with a dreaded ‘Next Thierry Henry’ mantle, the former Southampton man had always seemingly been on the brink of making the transition from winger to a lethal forward.

It has only been recently, nearing on a decade in North London, that Walcott has been given the chance to play in the central berth regularly. With teammate Olivier Giroud lumbering up top, the England international offers genuine pace and an ever growing killer instinct as the last man.

He’s often been accused of lacking another dimension, someone who simply runs fast and doesn’t know what to do when through on goal. Stick him out wide and hope for the best.

[ffc-gal cat=”arsenal” no=”5″]

However, the years have been kind to the 26-year old. He’s been able to develop into a ferocious forward, with quite an excellent record since returning to action after his serious injury picked up against Tottenham in January 2014.

Netting five times already this season, he was impressive towards the back end of last season – scoring a hat-trick against West Brom and opening the floodgates with the initial strike in a 4-0 FA Cup final win over Aston Villa. At one point, he had 12 goals in 13 starts.

Then came Manchester United. Though he didn’t score, his all-round performance in the 3-0 triumph was among his best for the club, as he recorded two assists for Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil. His outing that day showcased how far he’s come.

His club boss Arsene Wenger praised the striker, stating, ‘he really did fight today and showed he can fight, commit and protect the ball’.

So, with Wayne Rooney struggling domestically and Daniel Sturridge unreliable due to injuries, Walcott is arguably Roy Hodgson’s best option up front.

Not only can he torment back lines with his electric pace, his ever growing understanding of the role has seen him improve his general hold up play, his ability to create chances for others. No longer should he be shunted out wide, he can now lead the line.

Though Rooney may miss the upcoming international fixtures, the two as a pair is intriguing. Walcott just ahead of the England captain, with Raheem Sterling and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain either side of him is an exciting, dynamic front-line.

A fully fit Sturridge may give Walcott a run for his money as the best out and out centre forward in the county, but the Liverpool man is so injury prone it’s hard to truly gauge him.

Perhaps even Arsene Wenger will be let off the hook for not buying an expensive centre forward should Walcott continue to showcase his ability up front.

Why Leicester v Man City will be a defining game for the Premier League

If you watched Manchester United play Chelsea last night, I’ll forgive you if you started to clutch at straws.

The game finished 0-0 which, frankly, was thoroughly unsurprising. Before the game we all predicted a scoreless game with two of the most turgid and uninspiring teams in the league this season came up against each other in a stadium that has seen an alarming number of goalless draws and narrow Manchester United wins this season.

We were left declaring that it was entertaining, that even though it was 0-0 there could have been goals. We were left in shock that Manchester United actually seemed to try to attack Chelsea and go for the win. It may have been more exciting than your typical 0-0 involving United this season, but it was hardly a Premier League classic.

[ffc-gal cat=”premier-league” no=”5″]

Tonight, however, we’d be surprised to see a scoreless draw.

Manchester City travel to Leicester City for a top-of-the-table clash where both teams seem to know how to score, but seem to care very little about defending. Leicester City and Manchester City have conceded the most goals in the top six, but both have the best scoring records in the division.

That bodes well for the spectators, of course, both teams will have to play to their strengths and attack, and with City looking like a team with an overwhelming array of firepower at their disposal, surely they’ll have to do most of the provoking. That means Leicester can do what they do best, hitting City on the counter, where they’ve looked vulnerable all season.

So already this is a game set up to look like a real classic. A top of the table game played with passion and intent, a hammer and tongs struggle we like to think of as emblematic of the Premier League – something completely different from the damp display we saw last night.

The new kind of excitement we seem to draw from football seems to stem from something we always used to admire in the English game: speed.

For years, this league has favoured the fitter, more athletic players, the midfield powerhouses, the dominant defenders, the pacey wingers. The typical English footballer was technically proficient, sure, but that seemed like a quality secondary to ability to run all day long.

Nowadays, things have changed. Players like David Silva and Mesut Ozil are lauded as the geniuses they deserve to be called and teams like Stoke can attract players like Bojan and Shaqiri.

But we still don’t want to lose that speed we’ve always enjoyed in the Premier League.

So when teams like Manchester United play with such a slow conservatism, it’s just boring. Watching Van Gaal’s team, you might feel like you’re learning something about the game, about possession retention and attack-building. But that’s a case of labour over love.

WANT MORE? >> Man City transfer news | Leicester City transfer news

But there’s a balance being struck. It used to be a case of midfield pairing versus midfield pairing. Two different sides of the 4-4-2 battling it out for midfield superiority in a breathless war of attrition.

Nowadays, with the rise of the silky playmaker, teams have learned to be more solid, to stay compact so as to close down the space for the creators on the opposite side, and to draw the opponent out of position so as to create the opportunity to counter attack. Just like Leicester this season.

Leicester embody the new English style, in a way. They are direct and fast, when they get the ball. And so are Manchester City. And although City will look to be patient and work an opening from time to time, they are, themselves, deadly on the counter attack.

Both sides, despite their foreign management, are two teams who play with some thoroughly English virtues – speed, athleticism and the ability to be direct. And what’s more, they have a never say die attitude. Both teams are famed for coming back from losing positions and fighting until the end. So tonight’s game shouldn’t disappoint, because at the very least it will be played in a way that is sure to thrill a modern English audience.

It will be the game Manchester United v Chelsea should have been.
