Sunderland eyeing up "exciting" 4-3-3 manager who Dan Neil would love

Sunderland continue their search for a new permanent head coach after parting ways with former boss Michael Beale more than 100 days ago.

The Black Cats dismissed the ex-Rangers tactician earlier this year and decided to go with Mike Dodds as an interim until the end of the Championship season.

However, they have failed to find a successor to the English coach over the last three months and do not yet have a manager nailed down ahead of next season.

Michael Beale for Sunderland.

They have reportedly, though, narrowed down their shortlist of potential candidates to three managers, which suggests that progress is being made.

Sunderland eyeing up former Eredivisie boss

According to Alan Nixon, via his Patreon, former AZ Alkmaar manager Pascal Jansen is one of three names in the final frame to land the job at the Stadium of Light.

The reporter claims that St. Mirren chief Stephen Robinson and Dave Challinor, who currently manages Stockport County and just won League Two, are the two other men in the running.

AZ Alkmaar manager Pascal Jansen.

Jansen is the only one of the three out of work, as it stands, and this means that he could be the most attractive option for the Black Cats, as they would not have to pay any compensation to land him.

Sunderland could land a manager who current star midfielder Dan Neil would love by landing a deal to bring the English-born tactician to Wearside, ahead of Robinson and Challinor.

Why Dan Neil would love playing for Pascal Jansen

The 51-year-old boss, whose style was dubbed "exciting" by journalist Brian Wijker, typically deploys a 4-3-3 formation and his midfield consists of one anchor and two box-to-box midfielders who have license to buzz around the pitch.

In his last full season with Alkmaar, during the 2022/23 campaign, Jansen got the best out of central midfielder Tijjani Reijnders in a box-to-box role.

As you can see in the table above, the Dutch manager had his compatriot operating as an effective number eight who could make an impact at both ends of the pitch, with goals, assists, dribbles, tackles, and interceptions.

You can also see that Neil offered similar qualities in the middle of the park for Sunderland with his ability to make things happen in and out of possession.

Reijnders' form for Alkmaar during the 2022/23 campaign earned him a €20m (£17m) move to Italian giants AC Milan in the summer of 2023, possibly due to the fantastic platform that Jansen's 4-3-3 system provided him with.

The Dutch boss' two box-to-box midfield positions allowed the young star to thrive in the middle of the park in the Eredivisie, which then attracted interest from Milan.

Neil could now love playing for Jansen for the same reason as he could use his quality in and out of possession, as well as his athleticism, to thrive as one of the two number eights in the 4-3-3.

He could help the English youngster to take another leap forward by making more key passes and dribbling more to show off his ability in transition, as Reijnders did, to put himself in the shop window for a bigger move in the future.

Kolkata Knight Riders' England, Australia players available for team's first match, says Venky Mysore

The group of players from both teams will arrive in the UAE from England via a charter flight on September 17, moving from one bio-bubble to another

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Sep-20203:21

Venky Mysore confirms England, Australia players will arrive on chartered flight

Players coming to the IPL from the England-Australia limited-overs series will be available for selection for their teams’ first matches, contrary to fears they that might be held up by quarantine rules in the UAE. According to Kolkata Knight Riders chief executive officer Venky Mysore, the players won’t have to undergo the IPL’s mandatory six-day quarantine given they are travelling from one bio-secure bubble into another. That means those travelling to Dubai will be available to their teams from day one – Dubai has no mandatory quarantine period unless the person tests positive. KKR’s players – the team is based in Abu Dhabi – though will need to quarantine for six days under local government rules, but even by that timeframe they should be available for KKR’s first match on September 23. The players will all be flown into the UAE on September 17 – a day after the England-Australia series ends – on a chartered flight.Mysore also said negotiations were still on with the Abu Dhabi authorities to further shorten the six-day quarantining period. Abu Dhabi has had strict rules around people entering the emirate from outside (at present 14-day quarantines are mandatory) but, it is understood that a concession has been made in allowing players to train after six days as long as they remain within their team’s bubble. There are three players – England captain Eoin Morgan and batsman Tom Banton and Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins, who will be joining KKR’s squad in Abu Dhabi. KKR and Mumbai are the only two teams based in Abu Dhabi, and Mumbai has no players coming in from the England-Australia series. The six other teams are based in Dubai.”While they are still negotiating with the authorities, we are reconciled to the fact that we may have to quarantine our three players,” Mysore told ESPNcricinfo, in a wide-ranging interview that will soon be published in full. “They arrive on September 17, but our first game is on September 23, by which time they would’ve finished their [concessional six-day] quarantine. So it’s worked out well, and it’s good for the tournament.”Mysore said “receptiveness” from the IPL governing council towards the idea of ensuring a smooth transfer of players from one biosecure bubble in the UK to another in the UAE has made this possible. Earlier, Royal Challengers Bangalore chairman Sanjeev Churiwala too had confirmed players coming from the UK wouldn’t have to quarantine under IPL rules.”What we did was put a plan together and shared it with the medical team at the IPL,” Mysore said. “We told them, ‘they’re in a bio-secure bubble in UK. What if we brought them on a sanitised charter flight and we took care of all the elements of immigration, testing, contactless stuff and everything to allow them to come right into a bubble here?’ To give credit to IPL, they took it very constructively and they have a written Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for that, which says if you’re coming from a bubble to another bubble, you don’t need the mandatory quarantine period.”The same holds true of what Knight Riders aim to do for their IPL-bound CPL players from Trinidad & Tobago. The CPL ends on Thursday, and the players are going to fly out to the UAE on Saturday. Knight Riders have gone to the extent of ensuring the team bus, driven by a driver from within the bubble, will drop the players to the tarmac at the airport, thereby avoiding long procedural delays. Knight Riders have Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and Chris Green joining them from Trinidad.”We’re bringing all our players on a charter straight to Abu Dhabi. Even smallest of detail like how they will go from hotel to airport – they go in a bus with driver who is part of the bubble – straight to the tarmac. That is the level of detailing we have gone into, because of which they have waived the quarantine period.”Morgan, having already been through life in a bio-bubble, was asked to compare the ones in England with the ones in the IPL. “I think it’s going to be an easier challenge than staying at Southampton and Manchester, where the hotels are on the ground,” he said on Thursday, ahead of the first ODI against Australia. “Where we’re staying in Abu Dhabi will be nowhere near the ground. It has a beach, has a pool. So I think managing that might be a little bit better. And if you add in the fact that families are allowed into the biosecure bubble, it makes a huge difference. So, a lot more positive things than potentially the bubble that we have.”

West Brom could convince Corberan to stay by sealing "special" £6m move

West Bromwich Albion will enter the next Championship season slightly apprehensive at this moment in time, with lots of work needing to be done to fix the uncertain mood at the Hawthorns currently.

Carlos Corberan is being linked with a switch to a number of different clubs, with some reports even stating that he's been interviewed for the Burnley vacancy recently, whilst the likes of Kyle Bartley, Cedric Kipre and Alex Mowatt could soon be out of contract if their deals aren't renewed by the close of this month.

Yet, if the Baggies can ride this storm out and secure the future of Corberan alongside some key first-team personnel, they could well be in the promotion reckoning again, on the contrary, when a ball is kicked to start the 2024/25 campaign.

The Spaniard could even be convinced to stay put just off the back of one statement signing.

West Brom going after £6m-rated ace

According to report by Football Insider last week, West Brom are going back in for former loan star Mikey Johnston this summer, with a £6m price tag now slapped above his head by Brendan Rodgers' Celtic.

West Brom could do with more reinforcements going forward, owing to the club's recent retained list revealing that Matt Phillips would be allowed to walk away on a free transfer, and that could come in the form of Johnston, but it remains to be seen whether that hefty fee puts the West Midlands outfit off.

Mikey Johnston

With Baggies chairman Shilen Patel also revealing that the club will have to be "resourceful" this summer when penning an open letter to the West Brom fanbase, a move for Johnston could well be deemed too extortionate to get over the line.

Yet, it could now be deemed as a necessary capture to potentially keep Corberan on-side and not have his head turned.

Why Johnston could get Corberan to stay

Johnston was exactly the electric signing the Baggies needed last season to raise the excitement levels at the Hawthorns, with the current Celtic man taking to Championship football like a duck to water after walking in through the door on loan in January.

The 25-year-old winger – who was described as being "special" by Corberan in 2023/24 – would help himself to an impressive eight-goal contributions from just 18 matches, with seven of those being goals for his loan side, matching Grady Diangana's total for the season, albeit from 18 games fewer than the ex-West Ham United attacker.

Endearing himself immediately to the Hawthorns faithful, with tricky gung-ho ascents forward becoming his speciality, Johnston would end up filling the void left behind by Jeremy Sarmiento jumping ship to Ipswich Town expertly, with the powers that be at West Brom now intrigued to see what the Republic of Ireland international can do over a full 46-game campaign.

With a lack of left wingers at Corberan's disposal, as Adam Reach has also been let go of who can play down the left-hand flank, signing Johnston feels like an ambitious deal that could have legs, even if the wild £6m price tag is off-putting.

The Baggies chairman will aim to try and strike a balance between spending big and remaining cautious in the transfer market, with Johnston deemed a splurge that could be worthwhile.

Chamu Chibhabha will captain the Zimbabwe side that will tour Pakistan later this month. The 20-man squad announced by Zimbabwe Cricket also sees the return of the 24-year-old lanky fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani.Zimbabwe’s last international engagement was in Bangladesh, where Sean Williams served as captain in both limited-overs formats. Chibhabha played just the one ODI on the tour, in which he captained, with Williams sitting out. This time Williams is part of the travelling squad only as a player, with Brendan Taylor, Sikandar Raza and Elton Chigumbura among other experienced members. Tarisai Musakanda, touted as one of Zimbabwe’s brightest prospects with the bat, was not selected, while seasoned fast bowler Kyle Jarvis also failed to make the cut.Muzarabani’s return, though, is a big positive for Zimbabwe. He was released from his contract with Northamptonshire, a Kolpak deal affected by the rule changes owing to the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union. It put him in line to make a comeback for the international side for the first time since July 2018, when he played in a limited-overs home series against Pakistan.Faraz Akram, the Saudi Arabia-born allrounder who made his first-class debut at the age of 24 in 2017, has also been included in a national squad for the first time. The 19-year old allrounder Milton Shumba, who scored an unbeaten 121 in his last first-class match, is the other uncapped player making the trip, while the in-form Roy Kaia, who played his only international match in Pakistan in 2015, misses out.Zimbabwe are set to play three ODIs and three T20Is in Lahore and Multan, with the first game set to take place on October 30.

Naquela altura, as conversas ficaram em ‘stand-by’.

> Veja a tabela do Brasileirão

O time, visivelmente, sentiu a falta do meia.
