Australia will get a new first-class venue on Tuesday when Ian Healy Oval in Brisbane hosts the Sheffield Shield match between Queensland and South Australia. There had been various changes made to the schedule in recent days with the match initially relocated to Allan Border Field, but it has been returned to Ian Healy Oval due to the impact of recent rain with the new venue having better drainage than AB Field – that drainage is likely to be tested with considerable rain forecast for the opening day.Queensland’s previous Shield match against Victoria managed just 76 overs on the first two days before the second half of the game was abandoned.Queensland are currently top of the table in a tight race with New South Wales in what appears the likely pairing for the final next month. The side that finishes top of the regular season earns hosting rights. The two teams face each other at North Dalton Park in Wollongong in the final round of matches over Easter weekend.Last season’s final did not get played due to Covid-19 ending the competition early and New South Wales were awarded the title.Ian Healy Oval in Brisbane•Queensland Cricket

Queensland have brought fast bowler Billy Stanlake into their squad in place of Mark Steketee who has a side injury. Jack Wildermuth, who was ruled out of the abandoned Marsh Cup game against Victoria with a quad strain, has recovered to be included.South Australia, who are bottom of the table and have not won a game in any format this season, have included the uncapped Sam Kerber who has been prolific in Premier Cricket. Wes Agar could also be in line for a recall after a 10-wicket haul for his club last week.Ian Healy Oval is part of the A$18.6 million National Cricket Campus project with the next and final stage to redevelop Allan Border Field which will include increasing the boundary size to reach international standards and improved drainage. Work is due to start in June and last into early next year.Queensland squad Usman Khawaja (capt), Xavier Bartlett, Joe Burns, Brendan Doggett, Matthew Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Michael Neser, Jimmy Peirson, Matthew Renshaw, Billy Stanlake, Bryce Street, Jack WildermuthSouth Australia squad Travis Head (capt), Alex Carey, Wes Agar, David Grant, Henry Hunt, Sam Kerber, Jake Lehmann, Joe Medew-Ewen, Harry Nielsen, Liam Scott, Jake Weatherald, Nick Winter, Daniel Worrall

Imagine him & Matondo: Rangers could sign "unplayable" gem before Friday

Glasgow Rangers delivered their finest performance of the season so far on Saturday afternoon, scoring six goals in the Premiership for the first time since the 2021/22 campaign.

The 6-0 win over Ross County at Hampden could well be the catalyst that gives a much-needed jolt to Rangers following a fairly underwhelming start to the season thus far.

Phillipe Clement

Philippe Clement knows the real test will come this weekend as the Gers travel to Parkhead for the first Old Firm match of the season. Judging by recent form, the Belgian could be set for a tough test across the city.

Several players delivered superb performances in the win over County over the weekend, with a few potentially saving their Ibrox careers in the process, most notably Rabbi Matondo.

Rabbi Matondo’s game in numbers against Ross County

The Welsh winger looked like he was certain of an exit from the Light Blues, with Blackburn Rovers showing plenty of interest in the player recently.

This sale would have raised some funds for Clement to use on future signings before the end of the transfer window on Friday evening, but has Matondo perhaps salvaged his Ibrox career due to his display against the Highland side?

Matondo was unleashed by the Belgian in the starting XI, tasked with using his pace to good effect against a defence which had lost to fourth-tier side Spartans just a week prior.

The decision was a wise one. Not only did Matondo score twice during the 6-0 win, but he also grabbed another two assists, while succeeding with three of his six dribble attempts and making three key passes.

It was arguably his finest performance for Rangers since joining in the summer of 2022. While he may lack consistency, when Matondo is fit and firing, he is a devastating player in the final third.

Does this display suggest he will remain at the Gers after the window slams shut? Who knows, but Matondo didn’t do himself any harm with his productive attacking performance.

Could Clement potentially make a move for a winger on the opposite flank before Friday, however? The club have been linked with a Championship starlet.

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

Rangers showing interest in Norwich City sensation

A few days ago, we covered the news that the Light Blues were keen on making a move for Norwich City winger Abu Kamara, who was on Clement’s shortlist of wingers.

It was claimed that Ibrox scouts were running the rule over the youngster following an impressive loan spell at Portsmouth last term. He could be available for as little as £2m, although will this be a stumbling block for the club?

This may mean a few players will have to be sold between now and Friday in order to seal a deal for Kamara, but it could well be worth it.

Abu Kamara’s season in numbers

The winger made three appearances for Norwich during the 2022/23 season, but in order to aid his development, a loan spell was agreed with Portsmouth for the 2023/24 campaign.

Moving to the south coast, dropping a division in the process, was the perfect chance for Kamara to showcase his talents, proving that he would be able to cut it at Norwich.

In 52 matches for Pompey, Kamara registered an impressive 21 goal contributions – ten goals and 11 assists – in all competitions as the club secured promotion back to the Championship.

His former teammate at Portsmouth, Colby Bishop, hailed the winger as being “unplayable” as the season drew to a close, with the 21-year-old becoming one of their finer performers throughout the campaign.

If Clement manages to secure a deal for the young talent, imagine a partnership of him and Matondo on opposite flanks, causing chaos for defences all over the country.

Could it also mean the end for Scott Wright? He will surely fade out of the picture if Kamara is signed before Friday.

Scott Wright’s Rangers statistics

The former Aberdeen winger has hardly made an impression during his spell in Glasgow, despite joining the Gers midway through the 2020/21 season.

Having played a total of 120 matches during his spell at the Light Blues, Wright has managed to score just 12 goals and grab a further seven assists. This works out as a goal involvement once every 6.3 matches, certainly not the standard required for success at Ibrox.

Scott Wright

Towards the end of July, there were a few rumours linking Wright with a move from Rangers to the Championship, as the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County and Preston North End were all showing interest in the Scot.

So far, nothing has materialised, but it makes sense to offload him this summer, especially considering his contract expires at the end of the season.

Kamara would be a far greater threat on the right wing compared to Wright and this could see Clement have a wonderful duo of Matondo and the Norwich gem on either flank.

Both are pacey wide men who offer not only a threat in front of goal but are also able to generate plenty of chances for their teammates.

The Welshman may have played his way into Clement’s starting XI for the foreseeable future, especially with Oscar Cortes not due to return to the pitch for another week or two.

Having already signed Vaclav Cerny on a loan deal, Clement has a solid option on the right flank, but bringing Kamara to the club on a permanent deal would certainly be a wise move, as his value could soar following a decent season in Scotland.

Vaclav Cerny

The 6-0 win over County has inspired some confidence in several members of the squad, just in time to face Celtic.

Matondo is one player who could make the difference against the Parkhead side, similar to his last-gasp equaliser in the clash back in April.

Will there be another new signing or two before then, however? Only time will tell.

Victoria wobble around debutant James Seymour's half-century

South Australia, currently ahead by 132 runs, are in the position to dictate terms

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Apr-2021

James Seymour struck a half century on debut•Getty Images

A debut innings of 60 by James Seymour could not prevent Victoria’s wobbles in pursuit of South Australia’s 333 on day two of the Sheffield Shield match at Junction Oval in Melbourne. The bottom-placed Redbacks had wriggled their way to 333 with the aid of a debut fifty of their own through the former Victorian spin bowler Sam Kerber, who would go on to take his first Shield wicket by bowling Seymour, who had got off the mark with a pulled six, just as the hosts appeared to have righted themselves after the loss of Nic Maddinson. After Travis Dean was pinned lbw by Chadd Sayers with the second ball of the innings, Victoria’s scorecard was a disappointing sequence of starts without any major scores, as the captain Peter Handscomb, Marcus Harris and Maddinson all walked off having done most of the hard work. After Seymour’s exit, Daniel Worrall chimed in by perforating the defences of Will Sutherland and coaxing an edge from the bat of Scott Boland to leave SA in a strong position with two days remaining – much now rests on the shoulders of the unbeaten Sam Harper if Victoria are to minimise the first-innings gap.

Sky Sports: Celtic eyeing move to sign "incredible" £5m player for Rodgers

Celtic are interested in making a move for an "incredible" 26-year-old before the summer transfer window shuts, according to an update from Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph.

Celtic transfer rumours

Mateusz Bogusz is the latest player to be strongly linked with a summer move to Parkhead, as Brendan Rodgers looks to perfect his squad before the end of the month. The Los Angeles FC midfielder is wanted by the Hoops, who are believed to have held talks with his current club over a potential transfer.

Similarly, Lausanne-Sport ace Alvyn Sanches is also reportedly the subject of talks with Celtic, with the 21-year-old someone who Rodgers thinks could become his side's version of Cole Palmer, who has impressed so much for Chelsea since arriving from Manchester City.

Away from players who could join the Hoops this summer, there is also the ongoing saga regarding the future of the influential Matt O'Riley at Parkhead, as he looks to seal a move away.

The Dane could now join Brighton in the coming days, although a deal is yet to be agreed with the Seagulls, at least giving Rodgers some hope. It does feel inevitable that he will leave at this point, though, acting as a huge blow to the Scottish Premiership champions.

Celtic eyeing move for "incredible" defender

Writing on X on Thursday afternoon, Joseph claimed that Celtic are interested in signing Sheffield United ace Auston Trusty this summer, with the 26-year-old costing the Blades £5m last year.

Trusty could be an ideal summer addition for Celtic, considering that he has 32 appearances to his name in the Premier League, showing that he can perform in arguably the world's most famous and demanding league. He has also appeared 44 times in the Championship and won two caps for the USA, so he has plenty of pedigree.

The defender has been hailed by George Friend in the past, too, with his former Birmingham City teammate saying of him: "I think Trusty has been incredible. I don’t think in the whole time I have been in the Championship I have seen anyone better at coming from a league abroad and just taking to the Championship so easily."

The fact that Trusty is adept as both a centre-back and a left-back can only be a good thing for Rodgers, in terms of versatility and squad depth, and it would suddenly improve his options greatly, as Celtic look to impress across all four competitions this season, not least the Champions League.

Celtic in talks to sign "dangerous" player for Rodgers with £8m deal close

He could replace O’Riley…

ByTom Cunningham Aug 22, 2024

The Sheffield United ace is also at a perfect age, picking up lots of experience in his career but also still potentially awaiting his peak, so it is a deal that the Hoops should be looking to get over the line.

Heinrich Klaasen, handed the reins of a makeshift side again, hopes to be 'positive' and 'streetwise'

South Africa’s T20I side is without a number of first-choice players, some because of injury and some because of the IPL

Firdose Moonda09-Apr-2021

With 24 hours to go before the first T20I, Klaasen admitted he didn’t really know what his XI might be•AFP/Getty Images

It was just two months ago that Heinrich Klaasen, freshly recovered from a debilitating bout of Covid-19 at the time, was leading a second-string T20I side out in Pakistan. He is in the same position again. Then, in February this year, South Africa were without then-captain Quinton de Kock, senior batsmen including Faf du Plessis and Rassie van der Dussen, and their entire frontline pace attack of Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje, all of whom had returned home to prepare for a Test series against Australia that never took place. Klaasen oversaw a 2-1 loss.Related

Boucher's problems grow with Bavuma set to miss T20Is

Bavuma, Hendricks, Pretorius out of Pakistan T20Is

Now, he will again stand in as skipper of a makeshift side in a T20I series against Pakistan. New captain Temba Bavuma is out with an injury, van der Dussen is doubtful for the same reason, de Kock, du Plessis and the quicks are all at the IPL, and even some of the players who were part of the team that played in Pakistan are unavailable. David Miller, their leading run-scorer from that series, is also at the IPL and Reeza Hendricks, who had the joint-highest total in the only match South Africa won in Pakistan, is on paternity leave. Dwaine Pretorius, one of the allrounders, is injured. In February, Klaasen had insisted it wasn’t a second-string side that he had been put in charge of. Again, he has had to defend the status of the players he has to work with and although he has moved closer to admitting it is not the group he had hoped it to be, he did his best to give everyone as much of a boost as possible.”This is a great time for us to look at other players that are not necessarily in that first XI but could be in the back up XI. There’s a good opportunity for the youngsters,” he said. “Unfortunately, we do not have the big players here but we are a very strong team.”Except that, with 24 hours to go before the toss in the first T20I, Klaasen admitted that he didn’t really know what his team might look like. “We’re waiting on a couple of fitness tests on a couple of niggles. We’ll probably have a chat in the next hour or so to give the guys enough time to prep for tomorrow. So, at this moment, I have no idea.”Death-bowling specialist Sisanda Magala is one of the players who have to undergo a fitness test before being available for selection. This is Magala’s second inclusion in a national squad – he was part of the white-ball squads against England and Australia last year but was not capped. And coach Mark Boucher said earlier in the week that the team management wanted Magala to play but there were “no grey areas” around the requirements they have and until he met them, he could not be included. It would have been Temba Bavuma’s first T20I series as South Africa captain•Getty Images

So, on top of everything else South Africa have to do without, they are also without a player who has been hailed domestically as one of the best in controlling the end of an innings. Their squad includes a mix of players who seem certainties for the T20 World Cup, which takes place in six months’ time, and those who have barely entered the conversation. That makes it difficult to think of this series as something that could seriously be used in preparation for that tournament.”We’ve got a set plan on how we want to play,” Klaasen stressed. “Over the last couple of months, we’ve been fine-tuning the brand we want to play. With all the new guys coming in, they still need to play that brand of cricket because that’s the direction we want to go. We are going to keep pushing that brand of cricket.”Asked specifically about the “brand” that has been much spoken about since Bavuma took over the white-ball captaincy, Klaasen had a few pointers, but not many: “It’s a positive brand of cricket and a bit of streetwise cricket. The rest I can’t really expand on. This is the way the game is going forward and we need to keep up with the new style of play.”South Africa last won a T20I series two years ago, against Sri Lanka at home, and have since played five, lost four and drawn one. They have issues of poor form and poor luck, and this time, also poor timing.

Everton must regret selling £59m star who’s been outscoring Gordon

It's not been the brightest of starts to the season for Everton, who have lost each of their three Premier League fixtures, the last of which stung keenly, letting a late two-goal lead slip.

Indeed, despite winning 2-0 at home to Bournemouth, having played with confidence and style, Everton inexplicably capitulated and the Cherries lashed in three strikes to send the atmosphere at Goodison Park spiralling through the floor.

It cast a black blanket over an already disappointed fanbase, having lost 3-0 and 4-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur previously, but there were positives to take from last weekend's result.

Sean Dyche and his Toffees team have been mired in the trenches before, and with Dominic Calvert-Lewin fit and firing, they might just have the firepower to shoot away from the relegation fodder this season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin's resurgence

Calvert-Lewin, of course, will need to stay fit, something that he has not done with consistency over the past several years.

Stats via Transfermarkt

Not including the current fledgling campaign, Calvert-Lewin has only started over half the fixtures in the Premier League season on three of eight attempts.

But when he's on top, he's on top. The 11-cap England international has scored 55 goals across 216 Premier League appearances and is regarded for his physicality and quality as the focal frontman.

Last season, he enjoyed a revival that saw him feature across 32 top-flight fixtures, lacking his former prolificness but finding his feet toward the end, posting four goals and an assist across the final seven fixtures as Dyche's outfit clicked into gear.

It's important to put things in perspective. Four matches into the 2023/24 season, Everton had lost their opening three top-flight fixtures while defeating Doncaster Rovers in the second round of the Carabao Cup, identical to present results.

Everton also finished comfortably in 15th place, and had they not suffered an eight-point deduction, they would have finished 12th.

Calvert-Lewin's late-season resurgence proved vital in hitting a winning patch of form and steering away from the dreaded drop zone. The Athletic's Patrick Boyland even remarked that he looked "like the DCL of old" following a commanding display against Liverpool.

Everton have bolstered their No. 9 spot by signing Armando Broja on loan from Chelsea with the option to make the deal permanent for £30m next summer, but Calvert-Lewin's early-season form, scoring a goal and an assist apiece already, suggests that he could take some shifting from the starting spearhead spot.

He will need to juggle the workload, however, for an extended layoff could prove to be ruinous for Dyche and his plans. Everton could do with another dynamic attacking presence – Broja, aged 22, is talented but scored only two goals across 27 matches last year.

Chelsea striker Armando Broja.

Casting our mind back, Everton could definitely make good use of two former players, namely Anthony Gordon and Ademola Lookman, who have both shot to the upper echelon of the world's pantheon of players.

The latter, in particular, might just be the biggest regret when it comes to player departures.

How Gordon compared to Lookman in 2023/24

Atalanta superstar Lookman once plied his trade in Merseyside blue, signing from Charlton Athletic for a fee rising to £11m way back in January 2017.

A versatile winger with a love for scoring, he's one of Everton's brightest attacking talents of the past decade, with Gordon another to have carried high potential throughout his early days at the club before being sold and since realising his potential elsewhere.

Gordon was sold to Newcastle United for £45m in January 2023, and while the England international has since gone from strength to strength and been the subject of interest from Liverpool, who eyed a £75m deal this summer, Lookman would give him a good run for his money in claiming the tag of the player at the higher point.

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon

It's quite simple really; after all, Gordon isn't on the Ballon d'Or shortlist, is he? He also posted 12 goals and 11 assists across all competitions last season for the Toon, winning their Player of the Year award. But alas, Lookman trumped him – and won gold during his continental campaign besides.

Indeed, Lookman's tally of 32 goals for the Bergamo-based outfit to date is more than Gordon has achieved in his entire senior career, with the Englishman netting just 21 times for the Toffees and the Magpies, respectively.

Still only 26 years old, the Nigerian forward has plenty yet to give but has recently hit the pinnacle of his career, scoring an emphatic hat-trick against previously invincible Bayer Leverkusen in last term's Europa League final to hand the Serie A side their first-ever European title.

He joined as a teenager, and this 19-year-old prospect carried exciting qualities under both Ronald Koeman and then Sam Allardyce but failed to bring it together on English shores, despite scoring on his debut against Manchester City's Pep Guardiola.

Indeed, in total, four goals across 48 matches were registered for the Blues, but his talent was recognised by Germany's RB Leipzig, who signed him for £22.5m in July 2019 during Marco Silva's time at the helm, after enjoying his performances on loan in 2017/18 – where he scored five goals and added four assists across just 11 outings in the Bundesliga.

Now playing for Atalanta, he's positively exploded. Last year, Lookman bagged 17 goals and ten assists across 45 matches in all competitions to outshine Gordon's return, now honoured with a nomination for the 2024 Ballon d'Or.

And why not? On top of his extraordinary performance on one of the biggest nights in Atalanta's storied history, he has maintained a fierce threat throughout, ranking among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored per 90, as per FBref.

Such a meteoric rise has even earned the £38k-per-week talent a summer of interest from high-profile suitors such as Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, though Italian sources' suggestions that Atalanta were looking for a €70m (£59m) figure appears to have dissuaded the interested parties.

This transfer price means that Lookman is worth more than any of Everton's forwards. Calvert-Lewin was pursued by Newcastle United in the summer but the Magpies were put off by Everton's demands of £40m earlier in the summer.

Ademola Lookman for Atalanta

Of course, Lookman's post-Toffees career has been cardinal for his development; remaining on Merseyside, he may not have found the gusto to propel him to the 2024 Ballon d'Or candidate list or hit such a value, having now become an undoubted "superstar", as per 90min's Sean Walsh.

But one can't help but rue the failure of Silva and Co to keep a hold of him and ignite his career. Given that the likes of PSG and Arsenal hold a vested interest, it's clear that quite the pretty penny could have been fetched.
