Michael Burgess finds new lease of life with century for Warwickshire

Jake Libby retains fine touch for Worcestershire on a day to celebrate second chances

George Dobell07-May-2021

Michael Burgess scored his first century in first-class cricket for three years•Getty Images

It was a day for second chances at Edgbaston. It’s a generalisation but if, as a cricketer, you have found yourself released by Leicestershire in recent years, it’s probably a sign that it’s time to go and do something else. That’s not meant to sound harsh. But, over the last decade or so, the club has become something of a final stop for players of a certain age – think Charlie Shreck, Michael Carberry, Mark Pettini, Neil Dexter, Mark Cosgrove, Paul Horton, Matthew Hoggard, Chris Wright et al – and, while there are a few examples of players proving there can be life beyond being released by the club (Darren Stevens and Ned Eckersley spring to mind) they are the sea turtles making it back to the beach on which they were born.Michael Burgess is the latest to buck the trend. His century here was his first in first-class cricket for three years and suggested that he could yet enjoy a successful career at this level.Related

Dan Douthwaite, Callum Taylor frustrate Lancashire with doughty display for Glamorgan

Gary Ballance, Joe Root raise Yorkshire's hopes against Kent

Warwickshire is actually Burgess’ fourth first-class county. After developing at Surrey – albeit without making a first-team appearance – he was signed by Leicestershire and made 98 in his first first-class innings for the club against the touring Sri Lankans in 2016.But, when he was released a few months later without playing another innings for the club, he admits he experienced some dark times. He took a job in teaching for three months and tried to come to terms with life beyond cricket.”I thought my career was done at that point,” he says now. “It was a tough time. But I got a job at the Royal Hospital School in Ipswich and, in between teaching a bit of PE, football and cricket, I trained and netted with [former Essex allrounder] Graham Napier, who also teaches there.”Then he had some fortune. Having been given a trial at Sussex, he saw Ben Brown suffer a concussion in a pre-season warm-up game and was drafted into the side. He did pretty nicely, too, but with Brown also likely to reclaim the gloves eventually, was forced to battle it out as a specialist batter. When it became apparent that Warwickshire were looking for a replacement for Tim Ambrose, he jumped at the chance to claim a role as keeper. Warwickshire promised him an extended run in the side and do not even have another keeper on the staff at present. All of which sounds good and well. But, going into this match, he was averaging 12.66 this season and doubts were starting to mount. Dan Lincoln, a 25-year-old who has played a few games for Middlesex, has been brought into the second XI on trial. Burgess really needed this innings.Very nicely he played, too. While his strength is square and through the covers on the off side – an area in which he evokes memories of Mike Gatting – here he also demonstrated a sound defence, left well and was far better off his legs than he has been previously. He was one of only two men in the Warwickshire side to make more than 32 and helped his side to a third batting bonus point before being the last man out. Worcestershire were limited to two bowling bonus points.”Yes, potentially, I really do need to make this [time at Warwickshire] work,” Burgess admitted afterwards. “I’m trying not to think like that, but of course those thoughts come into your head.”I love cricket. I want to play cricket for a long, long time. I’ve had experience of a life outside cricket and I realise how lucky we are to come to Edgbaston and call it a workplace.”It’s been a tough month. This is a bit of a relief. I’ve put in some hard graft to get here so today was really sweet.”Jake Libby’s story is slightly different. But by the time he left Nottinghamshire, at the end of 2019, he averaged 26.82 in first-class cricket for the club and looked as if he might not make it at this level. But Worcestershire’s coach, Kevin Sharp, had long been an admirer. He had seen him make 170 for the Notts second XI in 2017 and knew this was a player who had more to offer. He jumped at the chance to sign him.It has proved an astute move. Libby, a compact, patient opener with a back-foot punch so gorgeous it might have been played by Sachin, is now averaging 70.21 for Worcestershire in first-class cricket and requires 17 more in the second innings to record his 1,000th first-class run for the club in just his 10th match. Only five men have scored more than his 485 runs this season.Warwickshire may be a little frustrated, though. Not only did they see Tim Bresnan, at slip, put down a relatively simple chance offered by Daryl Mitchell on one off a perfect Liam Norwell outswinger, but Libby was somewhat fortunate to see one fly just over short leg when a short ball cramped him for room.Later Jake Haynes, very much a young man at the start of his career, suggested he was the latest in an impressive line of home-grown Worcestershire players who could enjoy a long career. Son of former all-rounder Gavin, Haynes demonstrated a calm temperament and some elegant strokes in recording the highest score of his first-class career to date. He dealt with a fiery spell from Olly Stone as well as anyone.Given his injury record, there was some concern when Stone left the pitch in late afternoon in conversation with the physio. The club say he was suffering from nothing more than a mild stomach ache, however, and insist he will be fine for the rest of the game. During that spell he dismissed Libby, smartly held at short leg, after going round the wicket and cramping him for room, while Brett D’Oliveira was fortunate to see a bouncer fended off from his throat fly off the handle of the bat over the slip cordon for four. It was further evidence that Stone has the pace, hostility, control and skill for Test cricket. After his well-documented injury issues, Stone, too, may feel he is enjoying a second chance in the game. On this evidence, he, Burgess and Libby are all seizing that opportunity.

Edgbaston pitch invasion mars Derbyshire win and raises post-Covid crowd concerns

Warwickshire CEO condemns ‘disgraceful’ scenes after student promotion backfires

George Dobell24-Jun-2021

A pitch invasion marred the end of Derbyshire’s victory at Edgbaston•ESPNcricinfo Ltd / George Dobell

A large-scale pitch invasion marred the end of the T20 Blast game between Birmingham Bears and Derbyshire at Edgbaston.Several hundred spectators – mainly students attending as part of a promotion – ran on to the pitch at the end of the match. While there was no sign of any malicious behaviour, the scale of the incursion may cause repercussions for a sport currently making a case for greater crowd numbers at games.Ironically the student event was named ‘Invades’. The promotion promised ‘free flowing pints’ and ‘exclusive drinks deals’.No players were hurt – or even approached – though several stewards and some of the groundstaff did become involved in altercations as they tried to prevent spectators, many of whom were wearing fancy-dress, running on to the outfield. In the time of Covid, such behaviour is likely to make authorities uneasy. It may be worth noting that Selly Oak, just a mile or two down the road and where the University of Birmingham is situated, has seen a rise in Covid cases of almost 800 percent (actually 791.7) over the last week.Edgbaston is one of the grounds that has just been included as part of a pilot event for the limited-overs series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. At least 50 percent capacity had been expected at those games, though those numbers are due to confirmed in the coming days. There appears to be a genuine concern at Warwickshire, at least, that this incident could have compromised those plans.”The behaviour of a small number of students after the match finished was disgraceful,” Stuart Cain, Warwickshire’s chief executive, told ESPNcricinfo in a statement.”The organiser behind their attendance was well aware of social distancing requirements and these were communicated to everybody who bought a ticket. They were then enforced as best as possible on the evening by stewards who worked incredibly hard to manage their behaviour. Messages were repeatedly broadcast over the PA system and screens, and pitch invaders ejected. They will receive a life ban if identified.”With society having spent the last 15 months managing the pandemic, to see a small number of people behaving in this way is heart-breaking. We apologise to the majority of spectators who respected social distancing measures. I will not let this company or crowd come to Edgbaston again.”Related

There had been a succession of streakers throughout the game. While the venue had already shut its bars to the students and attempted to disperse groups who were not observing social distancing, it soon became apparent they were hopelessly outnumbered. In the dying moments of the game, the trickle of students became a stream until, after the last ball was bowled, the dam burst entirely. With venues required to demonstrate they can handle the return of crowds with the requisite Covid protocols, pictures of hundreds of spectators on the pitch may not inspire confidence. Some will say the stewarding was insufficient. But with crowd numbers limited to 25 percent of capacity at present, clubs are struggling to make these games financially viable for spectators. There were around 6,000 in the ground in total, about 2,000 of which belonged to the student party. After the game, reports emerged of at least one spectator having been hurt by a thrown object.”The atmosphere was horrible,” one spectator told ESPNcricinfo. “I have never, in 50 years at the club, been at anything like it. I the club wishes to continue to advertise Edgbaston as a “fortress” and encourage excessive drinking and partying at the expense of appreciation of cricket, I’m out of there.”It was a disaster waiting to happen and a gross error of judgement on the part of the senior management team. Heads should roll.”It probably could have been worse. Not for a moment did any of these pitch invaders look as if they had any malicious motives, and all of them were dispersed within about five minutes. But it will raise questions about both the stewarding of such events and the wisdom of marketing them in connection with alcohol promotions. The other shame of the incident was that it detracted from an impressive victory from Derbyshire and a match-winning innings from Tom Wood, in particular.Wood is a cricketer who has taken the scenic route into the professional game. He is aged 27 and having his second stab as life as a county player after being released by the club at the end of 2017. This was just his fifth game in the format. But he ensured his side held their nerve just as it appeared they may let Birmingham Bears back into a game which Derbyshire had dominated throughout. Having added 90 with Leus du Plooy – Derbyshire’s highest partnership in this format against Birmingham – he saw his side add just 25 runs in a five-over spell in which they also lost three wickets. It was also a significant result for Matt Critchley, in his first game as Derbyshire captain. Coming into this game, Derbyshire had won just one of their six most recent T20 games and lost the last three. Partially as a result, they decided to rest their regular captain, Billy Godleman, for the rest of the T20 campaign to allow him to “recharge his batteries”.While Critchley has never previously captained at professional level, he was the natural choice as a player of increasing stature in the Derbyshire dressing room and here he marshalled his resources nicely as his side pulled off a win against the side that was top of the table little more than a week ago.Matt Critchley has taken the helm at Derbyshire following the resting of Billy Godleman•Getty Images

To put the achievement into perspective, it was only the second time Derbyshire have ever defeated Birmingham (or Warwickshire, as they were once known) at Edgbaston in the 18-year history of the format. The previous occasion was in 2011.While Birmingham’s total may look respectable, on this surface – a hybrid track offering the sort of pace and bounce that’s ideal for these games – they were well short of par. While there were moments when Ed Pollock, whose ability to slog-sweep sixes off seamers is remarkable, looked as if he could carry them to somewhere around 200, they never really recovered from losing three wickets in the first 19 balls of the match. Most pertinently, they never recovered from the rare failure of Sam Hain. Hain came into this match averaging over 70 in the campaign this season but here, coming down the pitch to his second delivery, he was cramped for room as Fynn Hudson-Prentice angled the ball into his body. Hain looked aghast at the decision, but the umpire felt the ball had brushed the glove on its way to the keeper.Perhaps the surface helped Derbyshire. Whatever their results, their attack does not lack for pace and here they seemed to enjoy the bounce and carry in the surface. Conor McKerr, on loan from Surrey, claimed two wickets in his first over, while George Scrimshaw’s figures were the best of his short career in this format. The Bears were not at full strength. Dan Mousley was absent having broken his finger in training, while Rob Yates is unwell and Jake Lintott is in isolation having tested positive for Covid-19. They also left out their overseas player, Pieter Malan, who scored 63 against Northants only a couple of innings ago. It’s a result that does nothing for Birmingham’s hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stages. After four victories in succession, they have now failed their last three – albeit one of them fell victim to the weather – though you suspect it is the crowd invasion that will most concern the Warwickshire management in the coming days.

Newcastle missed out on £40m "monster" who’s now far outperforming Gordon

Newcastle United have enjoyed a stellar start to the 2024/25 campaign thus far, despite Eddie Howe failing to really strengthen the first-team squad during the summer transfer window.

Seven points from nine in the Premier League while reaching the next round of the EFL Cup is certainly considered a more than decent start, but will the lack of investment in the team during the summer come back to haunt the manager as the season progresses?

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

Several players have stepped up and performed superbly during the opening few weeks of the season, most notably Anthony Gordon.

Anthony Gordon’s statistics this season

The Englishman enjoyed a wonderful 2023/24 campaign, registering 23 goal contributions – 12 goals and 11 assists – in all competitions for the Magpies as they narrowly missed out on European football.

These performances meant he was called up by Gareth Southgate for a space in the England squad ahead of the 2024 European Championship, although he featured just once during the competition, coming off the bench in the group stage game against Slovenia.

This experience will stand him in good stead, however, as he looks to become a permanent fixture in future England squads.

Gordon has played in all three league matches for the Toon this term, scoring once in the draw against Bournemouth a couple of weeks ago.

The winger has been in electric form in the top flight. Aside from his goal against the Cherries, the 23-year-old has also created one big chance, averaged 2.7 key passes per game and succeeded with 0.7 dribbles per match, showcasing his attacking qualities.

Among his teammates, Gordon also ranks fourth for shots on target per game (0.3), along with ranking second for scoring frequency (a goal every 248 minutes) and first for expected assists (0.79) in the Premier League.

If the Magpies wish to return to the top six, or even the top four, Howe will be hoping one of his prized assets can maintain this current form once the international break is over.

Despite the left-winger shining for the club, could the manager have signed a player who has already outshone Gordon during the early weeks of the season? Chelsea winger Noni Madueke was a prime transfer target during the summer.

Newcastle missed out on Noni Madueke

The club were linked with numerous targets during the transfer window but failed to sign any of them.

With Howe aiming to bring another winger into his squad, particularly on the right flank, Madueke was an option that was being considered. They would have been forced to fork out a fee in the region of £40m in order to lure him north, however, and the move didn’t materialise.

In hindsight, this looks like a major missed opportunity for Howe, as there is no doubt the Magpies could have afforded the fee.

The English gem has started the season off in sublime fashion and has even outperformed Gordon in several metrics, proving why the club should have made a more concrete effort to sign him.

Noni Madueke’s season in numbers for Chelsea

Despite starting just three matches so far for the Stamford Bridge side, Madueke has scored four goals, which included a stunning hat-trick against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.

These displays should ensure he is thought of as a main option by Enzo Maresca heading into the next few weeks of the season, yet it proves exactly what Newcastle missed out on during the summer.

Across his two league matches, Madueke has averaged 4.5 shots per game, missed two big chances, created a big chance, averaged one key pass per game and succeeded with one dribble per match.

Said to be “one of the best young players in Europe” and a "mentality monster" by technical coach, Saul Isaksson-Hurst, he's certainly living up to that hype in 2023/24.

Madueke-Chelsea-Wolves-Stats

Despite the interest from other clubs in the transfer window, it now looks as though Chelsea did the right thing by keeping the former PSV winger, as his goals could be vital this term, both domestically and in Europe.

How Noni Madueke compares to Anthony Gordon

If Madueke joined Newcastle, he wouldn’t be fighting it out with Gordon for a place in the starting XI as they operate on opposite flanks, but the England youth international is enjoying a better campaign in the top flight than the Toon star.

Not only does Madueke have more goals than Gordon, but he has also averaged more successful dribbles, key passes and shots per game.

Furthermore, according to FBref, the Chelsea sensation also has a better shots on target percentage per 90 than Gordon (66.7% vs 50%) in the top flight, along with averaging more goal-creating actions (1.03 vs 0), achieving a higher percentage of successful take-ons (50% vs 25%) and performing more progressive carries (5.26 vs 3.33) per 90.

These statistics clearly prove the Chelsea gem has enjoyed a better start to the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, demonstrating how effective Madueke is in the final third.

If Howe had managed to bring the Englishman to St James' Park in the summer, he could have formed a devastating wing duo which could have terrorised opposition defenders all over the country.

Gordon is still one of Howe’s key players, but he doesn’t have anyone as effective at performing on the right wing.

Failing to sign Madueke could turn into a mistake by the club, especially if he continues to impress for the Blues as the weeks progress.

Newcastle should take plenty of confidence from this excellent start they have enjoyed, but imagine how better it might have been if they had someone like Madueke performing at his very best for the Magpies.

Newcastle want to beat Ashworth and Man Utd in battle for "special" 18 y/o

Hoping to get one over on their former sporting director, Newcastle United now reportedly want to sign a Premier League teenager ahead of Manchester United and Dan Ashworth in 2025.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies felt the full impact of Ashworth’s departure in the summer in what turned out to be a nightmare few months for new sporting director Paul Mitchell. On the hunt for reinforcements, those at St James’ Park ended the summer with their best signing being Lloyd Kelly on a free deal having failed in their pursuit to sign both Marc Guehi and then Anthony Elanga late on.

Newcastle star was worth £10m when Howe arrived, now his value's risen 200%

The talent has developed rapidly in a short space of time under Howe.

ByEthan Lamb Sep 19, 2024

Unsurprisingly eager to move on, however, Newcastle have seemingly set their sights on making up for lost time in 2025, with recent reports linking the Magpies with moves for the likes of Leroy Sane.

The Bayern Munich star would be an arrival to silence any doubters once and for all and would arguably be Newcastle’s biggest signing since Alexander Isak. Whilst potentially welcoming the former Manchester City man, however, those in Tyneside could sign a player with a lower profile but someone with plenty of potential.

According to GiveMeSport, Newcastle now want to sign Tyler Dibling from Southampton ahead of Manchester United and Ashworth. Although the Saints youngster is currently on course to stay put at St Mary’s for the time being, he’s certainly one to keep an eye on after he stole the show against the Red Devils despite a 3-0 defeat last weekend.

Just 18 years old, Dibling showed all the confidence of a veteran winger against Manchester United in the type of performance that was always going to grab the interest of those chasing the European places in the Premier League.

"Special" Dibling can make an instant impact

Dibling still has a lot of work to do before he reaches his best of course, but that should only be seen as a positive given that he’s already causing sides like Manchester United plenty of problems at just 18 years old. One can only imagine the player he’s on course to become if this is the level he already finds himself at in a struggling Saints side.

Tyler Dibling for Southampton.

Southampton boss Russell Martin has been quick to recognise Dibling’s quality too, saying via the Southern Daily Echo after the Saints narrowly lost against Nottingham Forest last month: “Tyler was brilliant. He was our biggest attacking threat. He was on the pitch for 15 minutes and he’s 18.

“We need a bit more of that mentality, that freedom to go and create, but he’s a really special talent. We just have to take our time with him. But, yeah, we probably need a little bit of help in that area, I would suggest.”

Dhananjaya de Silva on batting long: 'This is what I'm meant to do for the team'

He trusted his lower-order team-mates to play big shots if he took the game deep

Muralidaran: Karunaratne’s six off Bhuvneshwar changed the match

Bat long and take the game deep. These were the things Dhananjaya de Silva was telling himself during his match-winning 40 not out off 34 balls on Wednesday when he helped deliver Sri Lanka’s first T20I victory in six matches. Not known for his hitting capability, the match situation was perhaps made for de Silva, who struck only two boundaries – a six and a four – and focused instead on running singles and twos. With a severely depleted India making only 132, Sri Lanka did not require huge fireworks with the bat to chase it down.”This is what I’m meant to do for the team,” de Silva said after the match. “In the previous match as well, what I’d been told was to bat 20 overs from one side. I wasn’t able to do that in the previous game. Today was my day and I did that. If I can bat at a run-a-ball until the final overs, letting others attack around me, I can raise my strike rate towards the finish as well. That was the coach, captain and selectors’ plan.”Related

de Silva said the surface for this match was the slowest of the tour. It took a significant turn right through the game, with spinners picking up seven of the 11 wickets to fall. Only three sixes were struck in the entire match.”We knew it was a slow pitch, so our target while bowling was to restrict them to 125 or 130,” he said. “Our bowlers did well and we were able to manage that. When it came to our innings, we knew that it would be tough to bat as well, but if we dragged the game out to the 20th over, the equation becomes simple and we know what we have to do. I think even a T20 match, that’s the way to do it.”Despite de Silva’s innings, Sri Lanka’s chase was far from straightforward. They had actually been behind the DLS par score when rain arrived at the end of the 18th over, raising the possibility of the teams going off the field. In the end, the rain ceased quickly and the match continued with only a minor delay, but it required a six from the bat of Chamika Karunaratne in the 19th over to swing the game Sri Lanka’s way again. de Silva, though, said he trusted his lower-order team-mates.”We know that in the last four or five batters we have a few that can hit a six. Chamika, Wanindu Hasaranga, Isuru Udana and even Dushmantha Chameera can hit a big shot. What I’d wanted to do was to take the game deep, thinking that Wanindu or Chamika would be there with me to finish it off. Thankfully, Chamika was there at the end.”
