O setor comporta a parte defensiva e a parte ofensiva, sendo que a segunda foi ajustada no segundo semestre do ano com a chegada dos reforços como Renato Augusto e Giuliano, que se tornaram absolutos. Podemos até considerar Willian como um dos nomes que jogam por ali e também como uma peça que se garantiu como intocável, sobretudo pela qualidade. Foram eles (e Róger Guedes) os responsáveis pela mudança de patamar do time.

No primeiro semestre, antes desses reforços chegarem, a situação era mais caótica, com inúmeros testes com Cazares, Otero, Luan, Araos e Mateus Vital, que foi aquele com maior destaque. Dos nomes acima citados, apenas Luan continua no clube, mas raramente vinha saindo do banco de reservas e teve pouco espaço nos últimos meses. Ou seja, foi uma revolução no setor.

A outra parte, dos jogadores com mais característica defensiva, também não fica atrás dessa incógnita. Ao longo do ano, os seguintes nomes foram utilizados nessa função: Roni, Ramiro, Camacho, Cantillo, Gabriel, Xavier, Du Queiroz, além de Renato Augusto e Araos, que foram improvisados em algumas situações. Sete nomes para duas ou uma vaga no time titular corintiano.

Como bem é possível ver, todos eles têm características diferentes entre si. Os preferidos dos treinadores acabaram sendo Cantillo, que tem passe qualificado, mas dificuldade na marcação, e Gabriel, que tem forte marcação, mas dificuldade na construção. Quando um deles é escalado, a equipe precisou ser montada de forma a neutralizar essas deficiências e potencializar as qualidades. Mas eles também foram escalados juntos durante a temporada.

Camacho, Araos e Ramiro, por exemplo, já deixaram o clube. Roni mostrou que tem capacidade para cumprir a função e Xavier tem caminho para evoluir. No entanto, aquele que parece que vai ganhar terreno é Du Queiroz, que reúne tanto o poder de marcação quanto a saída de bola qualificada. O jovem de 21 anos conquistou espaço no fim da temporada e deve iniciar 2022 em alta.

Talvez seja esse o motivo da oscilação do time ao longo do ano. Mancini e Sylvinho não conseguiram equilibrar a intensidade da equipe no setor, muitas vezes ficando sem pegada na marcação ou sem velocidade na construção das jogadas. Sem dúvidas o meio-campo foi a maior incógnita de 2021, mesmo em comparação com o tão criticado ataque. Faltou definir quem era(m) o(s) companheiro(s) de Renato Augusto e Giuliano. Será essa a vaga para Paulinho?

Now, reports in Spain continue to speak in glowing terms about young talent Mateo Mejia, who Leeds were at one point keen to sign. During Victor Orta’s time at the club, it was believed that a deal would be done to sign the 21-year-old. However, it never transpired and instead Orta used his new position with Sevilla to lure him to Andalucia instead.

If that does happen, United will have to react quickly when it comes to bringing in a new manager, but according to the club’s former chief scout, Mick Brown, they may already have their replacement in mind.

Brown worked at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson, and he was key behind bringing Ruud Van Nistelrooy to the club in 2001. 23 years on, and Brown thinks Van Nistelrooy would be a “brilliant” fit to become the next manager at Old Trafford. Brown thinks the former striker should be a prime candidate to replace Ten Hag should a change occur.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy has come in, and I know him; he’s a top-class person. I was instrumental in signing Ruud. I think he’d be a brilliant fit. But at the moment, he can only do what the manager instructs him to do, so we haven’t seen too much of what he’s capable of.

“They’re going to have to do something because I don’t think there’s a long list of candidates out there waiting for the job. I think they could give him the job on an interim basis and see how he goes. If he does well, they might end up appointing him to take over on a full-time basis, as there aren’t too many other options out there.”

But while some may back Van Nistelrooy to become the next United manager, it appears the club also have their eyes on some big name targets.

Ratcliffe and Man Utd could hire a "fantastic" Inzaghi

According to The Daily Star, relayed by the Daily Mail, Manchester United are considering a move for Simone Inzaghi if they decide to sack Ten Hag. Pressure is starting to seriously grow on the Dutchman, and while he remains in charge this week, it is believed that Sir Jim Ratcliffe will assess the situation during the international break.

Inzaghi, who has been described as a “fantastic” coach by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has been in charge of Inter Milan since 2021, and he is now an option that is being considered by the Old Trafford hierarchy. Inzaghi has won the Serie A, the Coppa Italia twice and guided Inter to the Champions League final in 2023 during his tenure, while he also won the Coppa Italia during his time with Lazio.
