Rangers and Koppen now targeting players from one country ahead of January

Rangers and technical director Nils Koppen are believed to be targeting players in a specific country ahead of the January transfer window, according to a fresh update.

Latest Rangers news

The Gers will feel that they have turned a corner of some sorts under Philippe Clement, following a slight improvement in results in recent weeks, allowing themselves to gain a little ground on Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race. A 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham in the Europa League was also a good result.

While the Hoops still have a big lead at the top of the table, Rangers have at least managed to narrow the gap to nine points, and they will hope to gradually close in on their rivals as the weeks and months pass.

For that to happen, reinforcements could be needed in the January window, however, giving Clement the extra depth that he craves in his squad. Standard Liege youngster Isaac Price is one player who has been linked with a move to Ibrox, with the 21-year-old starting 16 matches in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League this season.

Chelsea midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has emerged as more of a high-profile option for Rangers, too, having struggled to be a key player under Enzo Maresca this season, following his move from Leicester City in the summer. The Englishman could be a great signing for Clement, adding genuine quality in the middle of the park.

Rangers and Koppen eyeing players from Belgium ahead of January

According to a fresh claim from Ibrox News, Rangers will turn their attention to signing players from Belgium ahead of January, as they look to bolster Clement’s squad.

It is stated that Koppen is “gathering information about potential targets” in the country, although the Gers’ technical director “does not have anything imminent in the pipeline” currently.

Philippe Clement

This has to be seen as encouraging for Rangers, in terms of it being clear that they are showing an element of intent ahead of the January window opening next week.

Granted, there are no specific players who are mentioned, but it suggests that Koppen is working hard to bring in individuals who can enhance the Gers’ hopes of pulling off a miraculous comeback in the title race. Clement himself has hinted at a “hectic” January taking place, too, saying:

“It’s always a hectic period because players start to doubt whether to stay or not, there are a lot of talks from us with players and their agents to convince them about things.”

It will be interesting to see if Koppen’s Belgian scouting mission comes to anything, but Price could be an excellent choice to come in as a long-term option with lots of ability.

Jack Haynes notches maiden hundred as Worcestershire battle to final-day stalemate

Ben Stokes denied as Durham manage just one of the eight wickets needed

David Hopps08-May-2022

Jack Haynes scored his maiden first-class hundred•PA Images via Getty Images

Maiden first-class hundreds can come in many guises. Players dream in their youth of hooking a great fast bowler for six on a lightning-fast pitch to the adulation of the crowd. Real life can be more prosaic. Jack Haynes got his on the flattest deck imaginable when he nicked Matthew Potts in front of third slip and the ball bounced away to the boundary. But now he has one after some painful near misses, he is a mere 21, and he looks well equipped to make more exciting ones in the future.Haynes met his feat with a leap in the air, an embrace from his captain, Brett D’Oliveira, who was blocking down the clock at the other end at the time, and a standing ovation from the crowd. There was a extra piquancy, beyond run-of-the-mill county loyalty, to their pleasure. Many remember his father, Gavin, who played for Worcestershire throughout the 1990s, a long-forgotten age of small scores, seaming pitches and madcap run chases. Jack also had visions of that breakthrough hundred before. He was run out for 87, backing up too far at the non-striker’s end, against Warwickshire at Edgbaston last summer, and also reached 97 against Derbyshire at New Road before hitting a long hop from Matt Critchley to deep midwicket.Ample reason therefore for him to draw considerable satisfaction from a hard-fought draw on a placid fourth-day surface that was certainly wearing but only for any neutrals watching. So will Worcestershire, considering that at one point they were 41 for 4 in response to Durham’s first-innings declaration at 580 for 6. To escape from a Ben Stokes pummelling and hundreds in each innings from Sean Dickson with such assurance was professionally satisfying.Tips for county batters to improve their concentration: connect with nature, take up meditation, reduce multi-tasking. “Bat on flat pitches,” the ECB’s approved solution, is yet to be added to the list, but at this rate it’s only a matter of time. Haynes’ mindset never wavered over six hours as he finished unbeaten on 120 from 276 balls.Stokes bowled 30 overs in the match, 15 in each innings, and endured a wicketless game: only 20 fell over four days. His attempts to make early breakthroughs were repelled in perhaps the most intensively-contested cricket of the day. In the final throes, he fell over trying to bounce out Haynes (lying on the floor, he watched Haynes’ uppercut fly to the cover boundary) and then he was stopped in his tracks by a fly in his eye, briefly bringing a tiny tremor of concern.Worcestershire, 85 for 2 overnight, needed another 357, Durham required another eight wickets. Durham took their only wicket of the day seven minutes before tea, the first over with the new ball when Azhar Ali edged a little outswinger from Chris Rushworth to second slip, out for 92 and so missing a first hundred for Worcestershire. Haynes’ century was raised in the following over. By such small margins, contentment and frustration occur. For much of the day, the asking rate for Worcestershire to fashion an exceptional victory was only four an over. It was unlikely but not impossible. It might have been worth a look, if only for a wicket or two. But the ECB in its wisdom has allocated eight points for a draw – 50% of the total for a win – and a generation that has bought into the adventure of short-form cricket is less willing to risk what they have if the format (or the points allocation) does not force it upon them.Durham blew what few chances they had to make earlier inroads. Haynes was missed at slip by David Bedingham when he cut the slow left-armer, Liam Trevaskis, on 61; Matt Salisbury almost had Azhar caught at gully by Bedingham on 82, a much simpler chance. Borthwick did not introduce his own legspin until the 75th over, which felt a mite defeatist until you considered that any turn or bounce would have been miraculous. Eight of Haynes’ 20 boundaries came off Potts, who had licence to make things happen but who on this occasion came out second best.Durham, highly fancied at the start of the season but still seeking their first win, only took two Leicestershire wickets last month on a final day at Chester-le-Street. It can’t get any worse than that, they consoled themselves as they headed, bodies aching, to their cars. Oh, yes, it could. One hopes for their sake that the wicketless final day is not still to come.

Everton make approach to sign international striker who has no weak foot

Everton have made an approach for an international striker who has been in fine form for his club this season, according to a new report from Germany.

Everton latest news

Everton’s results have picked up in recent weeks, with Sean Dyche’s side now undefeated in the Premier League in four games. Since thrashing Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0 at the start of the month, the Toffees have drawn with Arsenal, Chelsea and, most recently, Manchester City, whom they held on Boxing Day.

Despite their upturn in form, however, the Toffees remain dangerously close to the drop zone, and are, apart from their thumping of Wolves, desperately struggling to score goals. In fact, they’ve scored just 15 in 17 top-flight games this term. Only bottom side Southampton have scored less, with 11.

£100k-p/w Everton star eyeing exit and his reps are in talks with new club

He could be a huge loss for the Toffees.

ByBarney Lane Dec 26, 2024

Speaking with BBC’s Match of the Day, Dyche recently addressed his team’s poor form in front of goal.

“Goalscoring has been a problem for four or five years. It has been a big task for this club for a long time. It is an ongoing challenge. It is very unlike us to make that many mistakes. We’ve gone back to mistakes today and we need to push it aside quickly.”

Everton make approach for Tim Kleindienst

To solve their goalscoring woes, Everton are reportedly now eyeing a January move for Borussia Monchengladbach striker Tim Kleindienst.

According to Bild, via Sport Witness, the Toffees have asked for information and made an approach for the 29-year-old, who has taken the Bundesliga by storm over the past season-and-a-half.

Last year, Kleindienst managed 14 goals and five assists from 35 games for newly promoted 1. FC Heidenheim – form that saw Gladbach come knocking in the summer. Since the move, the Germany international has scored nine goals and six assists from 17 matches while leading the line for Gerardo Seoane’s side.

Bild claim that Kleindienst’s displays this term have piqued the interest of Everton, as well as Wolves, with both clubs looking at potentially making a move for the two-footed, 6ft 2 striker in the New Year.

As relayed by Sport Witness, Gladbach managing director Roland Virkus recently confirmed that there have been requests about Kleindienst, but didn’t reveal whether any of them were from Everton or Wolves.

“Of course there are requests, that’s completely normal if you perform well. But we don’t want to let any of the top players go because something is happening here.”

Speaking about his Gladbach future earlier this month, Kleindienst also said that he’s not considering a move away from Borussia-Park right now.

“I am not thinking about anything else at the moment, Gladbach is a huge club. I enjoy it here and that’s why things are going so well,” he told Sport Bild, per One Football.

Should they not be able to land Kleindienst, Everton are also reported to be interested in Botafogo forward Igor Jesus.

Kuldeep stars with four-for to hand Capitals fourth win

Rana’s 57 not enough as Knight Riders suffer their fifth straight loss of the season

Sidharth Monga28-Apr-20224:37

Bishop on Russell: ‘He’ll reflect on this night and look to do things differently next time’

Part of Kolkata Knight Riders, Kuldeep Yadav didn’t get a single game last IPL. The reason perhaps is that in the two preceding IPLs, he picked just five wickets in 45 overs. In seven overs this year against the franchise that let him go, Kuldeep has taken eight wickets, consigning them to their second defeat against Delhi Capitals. However, it could still be argued that he is still looking for a captain who makes optimum use of him: he bowled just the three overs despite taking four wickets because two left-hand batters were at the wicket. The part-time offspinner used instead gave Nitish Rana the launching pad for a 30-ball fifty that took Knight Riders to 146 but it proved inadequate against a power-filled Capitals batting line-up. David Warner led the response with a 26-ball 42 but they kept losing wickets as they looked to dominate the chase. Rovman Powell and Axar Patel, though, saw them home in the end with one over to spare.Early swingBoth Mustafizur Rahman and Chetan Sakariya – in for the injured Khaleel Ahmed – swung the new ball, not letting Knight Riders find any momentum. Venkatesh Iyer, back at the top of the order, continued to struggle. The other new opener, Aaron Finch, tried to dominate Sakariya, but the inswing flattened his wicket. When Venkatesh finally connected a paddle sweep, he found the man at short fine leg. Knight Riders 22 for 2 in 4.3 overs.Kuldeep magicKuldeep came on to bowl at 35 for 2 in seven overs, which meant the batters were already under pressure to get a move on. Debutant B Indrajith tried just that when he faced Kuldeep first, but got too close to the ball and couldn’t get the elevation required to clear long-on. Still needing to accelerate, Knight Riders promoted Sunil Narine, but Kuldeep trapped him in front with the perfect wrong’un. Rana played a forward-defensive to avoid the hat-trick.Only three boundaries came off the first 11 overs, all fours. Just as Knight Riders built some momentum in the next two overs, Capitals went back to Kuldeep. Pant might have made a questionable call of bowling Lalit Yadav in the 13th over, but his keeping was sensational in the 14th. Shreyas Iyer went to cut Kuldeep, but the wrong’un turned and stayed low to take a thick bottom edge, which went down almost vertically. However, Pant managed to somehow catch it by his shoe laces, showing a great eye, athleticism and fitness.Three balls later, Andre Russell left his crease against character, and Kuldeep again slipped in the wrong’un. Even though Pant fluffed the take now, the rebound broke the wicket legally. It was now 83 for 6 in the 14th over.Nitish Rana upped the ante after early wickets•BCCI

Rana gives Knight Riders somethingThis is when Pant chose to go funky. There have been 26 instances of a spinner getting three or more wickets in the first three overs in the first innings, but only two of them have not gone on to bowl out. Kuldeep became that second as Pant chose to bowl Lalit Yadav to the two left-hand batters in the middle. Rana took the toll of his part-time offspin in the 17th over, not least because he enjoys a good match-up against offspin. Shardul Thakur went for 16 in the 19th as both Rana and Rinku Singh got stuck in. At 144 for 6 now, Knight Riders could think of 160, having been through a period when they would have taken 140., though, bowled a superb final over, taking three wickets and conceding just one off the bat. There was a back-of-the-hand slower ball, hard lengths and two perfect yorkers.Warner keeps chugging alongCapitals were always going to try to take a big chunk off the chase early, especially with their batters. However, Knight Riders managed to pick wickets in the first two overs. The first ball swung a touch to take a leading edge that Umesh Yadav took in his follow-through. In the second over, Mitchell Marsh tried to take down the debutant Harshit Rana, but picked out long leg.David Warner, though, continued to show why he is among the IPL greats. The quickest batter in the powerplay this year, he kept finding boundaries efficiently without taking risks even though Lalit at the other end found himself stuck. He even managed to paddle Sunil Narine for a four, and when he took down the part-time spin of Nitish Rana, they needed just 67 in the last 11 overs.Umesh, Narine bring Knight Riders backKnight Riders had no choice now but to go on an all-out attack. In the 10th over, Umesh bowled the perfect bouncer – head high, cramping Warner – for a catch at fine leg. In the 11th, Narine bowled the small offbreak perfectly to get Lalit lbw. Shreyas stuck with Umesh, who managed to find the outside edge of Pant. It was a different game now at 84 for 5.Axar, Powell take Capitals homeThe asking rate, though, was still not high, and Shreyas had to juggle the fifth bowler’s quota between Russell and other part-timers. When Axar pulled and upper-cut the first two Russell deliveries for four and six, Knight Riders had massive problems. A run-out off the last ball of the over still left the door open.Powell and Shardul Thakur watchfully played out Narine’s last over, but by now Harshit had walked off with an injury. So Shreyas had to bowl Venkatesh, and he did so in the 17th instead of keeping that over till the end. Powell hit him for a six and a four to bring it under a run a ball, and it took a six each off Tim Southee and Shreyas to end the game.

Sheffield United looking at signing "first-class" Hamer replacement

Sheffield United got back to winning ways in the Championship last time out despite a growing list of injuries continuing to bother Chris Wilder.

Heading into that away trip to Watford, Wilder couldn’t call upon the likes of Kieffer Moore, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, Tyrese Campbell and many more who have been key for the Blades so far this campaign, but the determined team spirit of the South Yorkshire side prevailed in the end.

The United boss will be concerned though about the latest injury development in his squad that was suffered during the Hornets win, with the casualty a goalscorer on the day.

Gustavo Hamer's importance to Sheffield United

Gustavo Hamer came off just after the hour mark for his winning team, with Wilder revealing afterwards that the ex-Coventry City star played from the start at Vicarage Road despite having a tight hamstring concern.

Now, the 57-year-old will hope Hamer walking off complaining of an issue doesn’t mean he will be out for a significant amount of time, notably when you consider his importance to the promotion cause away from just finding the back of the net against Tom Cleverley’s hosts.

Across this season to date, the entertaining ace has picked up an impressive six goals and five assists in league action, with Wilder getting even more out of his number eight by playing him predominantly down the left channel since relegation.

It’s not as if Hamer struggled in the Premier League either when playing in a more traditional central role, with four goals and six assists tallied up even as his side depressingly sunk down to the second tier.

As a result, the Blades may feel as though they need to dip into the January transfer market to seal a replacement.

Whilst the target in question hasn’t ever been unleashed down the left wing for his current side, he could well come in and fill the void well if Hamer is injury-stricken, based on his own impressive goal and assist numbers this season so far.

ByStephan Georgiou Feb 3, 2025 Sheffield United interested in "first class" replacement

As per a recent report by Caught Offside, the automatic promotion candidates are monitoring Reading star Charlie Savage this January as a potential new midfield recruit.

The Blades won’t be alone in their advances, however, with Stoke City and Norwich City also both linked, but the South Yorkshire’s side promotion aspirations could make Bramall Lane a more attractive place to come for the breakout 21-year-old over the Potters and the Canaries.

Reading's Charlie Savage

Even whilst Reading worry about their long-term future involving chairman Dai Yongee, the Royals find themselves also dreaming about their own chances of tasting promotion success in League One, with Savage a strong performer for his side all season long.

The two-time senior Wales international is finally making a name for himself in the senior game, therefore, after being tipped for greatness when on the books of Manchester United as a gifted youngster.

The promising 21-year-old is two goal contributions off Hamer’s number from the league above, but his metrics are still worthy of praise, with an aggression present in his repertoire that is arguably similar to the United ace.

Last match, as Reading had to make do with a point against Charlton Athletic, Savage won four ground duels and completed three tackles, with Hamer also rolling his sleeves up in this department as a battling presence versus Watford, with five ground duels won and two tackles successfully completed.

Therefore, whilst it would be a heartbreaking blow to see Hamer’s name added to the growing list of casualties, United could do far worse than snapping up Savage, who was labelled as “first class” by ex-Wales manager Rob Page when thrown into the deep end of the national side.
