Harry Brook brings scintillating form into Blast as Yorkshire make winning start

New Test call-up’s 60 not out off 27 balls seals win as Worcestershire fade after bright start

Yorkshire 175 for 3 (Brook 60*, Lyth 40, Root 35*, Malan 33) beat Worcestershire 172 for 9 (Haynes 61, D’Oliveira 32, Thompson 3-35) by seven wicketsTwo trophyless appearances at Finals Day are the paltry sum of 20 years of T20 cricket for Yorkshire, as if somehow their illustrious history inhibits them in the shortest format of the game. You can imagine the ghost of Wilfred Rhodes emerging from behind the Howard Stand, whenever they set their minds free, chiding: “We don’t play this game for fun.” Perhaps this will be the year they put all that behind them, emerging from a troubled winter with a new outlook. A seven-wicket win with 11 balls to spare was a good way to start.Harry Brook certainly is playing it for fun, the joy he is bestowing enough to soften an old ghost’s heart. Every time he comes out to bat this season, he is living a fantasy of unimagined success. He was in ridiculous form at Headingley, as he has been all summer, transferring his prodigious Championship season – 840 runs at 140 – to the start of the Blast. His unbeaten 60 took 27 deliveries, his array of shots expertly chosen, his domination apparent from the first ball he faced.Related

Can the Blast still thrive in the world of the Hundred?

Worcestershire, who at one time had visions of 200-plus, were hauled back within striking range at 172 for 9. At 88 for 3 from 10.5, despite solid contributions from Adam Lyth and Dawid Malan, the game was still in doubt, but Brook and Joe Root, who astutely batted in his shadow, added 87 in 7.2 overs.Yorkshire were grateful to field a Blast XI as strong as this, even with the absence of Jonny Bairstow and David Willey on IPL duty. The presence of two England call-ups, Root and Brook, was just as it should be in the Blast, within reason; Shadab Khan was on debut; and, perhaps most hearteningly of all, Tom Kohler-Cadmore was making his first appearance of the season after a concussion suffered in pre-season.It was watched by a moderate crowd – 6,000 at most – a somewhat worrying sign for the Blast as it seeks a successful existence alongside its mouthier (and cheaper) offspring, the Hundred. Yorkshire also have their own stumbling block: six home games out of the first seven, all packed into a fortnight, and this during a cost-of-living crisis, a staggeringly incompetent fixture list which should cause those responsible to squirm with embarrassment.Jack Haynes hits inside-out over wide mid-off•PA Images/Getty

Worcestershire’s chief resistance came from Brett D’Oliveira and Jack Haynes, one-time teammates at Ombersley. On an excellent batting surface, they took 70 from the powerplay and were 123 for 3 in 12 overs by the time both had departed, but they subsided tamely, suffering for the absences of their overseas duo Colin Munro and Dwayne Bravo and their captain Moeen Ali. Haynes, a player of considerable promise, has logged his first three first-class hundreds in as many weeks this season and his buoyancy could enable him to float happily through the Blast group stages.Worcestershire lost Ed Pollock early, hacking at Dom Bess, but they found momentum not just in the shape of Haynes, but also D’Oliveira. Twenty-two off the fifth over, Jordan Thompson’s first, beginning with a midwicket pull and ending with two straight hits, saw him immediately withdrawn from the attack. Root brought himself on for an over, but it was a captain’s gambit he regretted as Haynes twice deposited him over long-off in an over that cost 20. It was with relief that Root’s last ball saw the end of D’Oliveira as he drove his last ball to point (32 from 16).There was work to do for Yorkshire and the middle overs were in the hands of the spin partnership that they hope will bring them sustenance this season, Adil Rashid and Shadab (the best spin combo at Headingley since Rashid and Azeem Rafiq, and as everybody knows there hangs a tale or two).Shadab looked in trim, whereas Rashid began rustily, having had no meaningful cricket since the end of January in Bridgetown, and generally looked dissatisfied with his rhythm, but still somehow emerged with 0 for 30 from four. Yorkshire still hope he will relax his white-ball stance and play an occasional red-ball game and, on this evidence, it would benefit all parties. With no wickets from either spinner, Worcestershire held the upper hand but they declined the moment that Haynes swung Matthew Revis to deep midwicket. Haynes and D’Oliveira had gone down the ground with ease, but what followed was largely a collection of nudges and half-hits. Revis’ only two previous T20 matches had been ones of supreme inactivity, but he has had a decent Championship season and the wicket of Haynes was a good way to start. Thompson, milked earlier, returned bullishly, with two late wickets.

There was also a scintillating run-out from Haris Rauf off his own bowling. Ed Barnard’s straight drive hit the stumps, but dislodged only one bail, leaving one bail still standing, and a run out still a possibility without recourse to all the palaver off pulling up a stump. Had Rauf spotted the intricacies of a law which seems particularly anachronistic in the heat of T20? Whatever, he dashed towards mid on and flung down the stumps at high velocity.Kohler-Cadmore’s return was unrewarding as he chose to slog-sweep the first ball he faced from D’Oliveira, his fourth and was bowled. Lyth had set up the innings to good effect; Malan played a classic Malan computerised innings before casually holing out to the long side at deep midwicket with 33 from 30 and the game in the balance.Brook and Root made light of that. Brook was particularly severe on Barnard and Pat Brown, who have outdone many a T20 batter in the past. A punch over wide long-off off Barnard and uppercut against Brown over backward point were among the highlights. If Root had batted at No. 3 at Lord’s, of course, there would have been room for Brook to make his Test debut. Instead, with nine scores of fifty-plus to his name in 10 innings this season, he goes to Lord’s amid premature indications that he must await his opportunity. Not the sort of thing to chat to Root about in a match-winning T20 partnership – but certainly the sort of thing to mull over while you were watching it.

Keith Barker, Mohammad Abbas hasten Warwickshire towards defeat

Old boy takes four wickets for Hampshire after Burgess, Davies dig in

ECB Reporters Network13-Jul-2022

Keith Barker of Hampshire appeals for a wicket•Getty Images

Warwickshire 217 and 212 for 9 (Burgess 58, Davies 46, Barker 4-23) lead Hampshire 370 for 9 dec (Holland 99, Dawson 92, Brown 72*, Hannon-Dalby 5-86) by 59 runsKeith Barker claimed four for 23 after Michael Burgess and Alex Davies tenaciously ground down Hampshire to chaperon Warwickshire into day four.Bears old boy Barker is second in the Division One wicket-taking tally with 38 scalps this season but was forced to toil with Mohammad Abbas (three for 31), Liam Dawson (two for 38) and the rest of the host’s attack.Davies and Burgess, 46 and 58, were the chief occupiers on a turgid day of low scoring as Warwickshire attempted to scrap their way out of the threat of an innings defeat, having given up a 153 first-innings deficit.Hampshire will need a wicket and at least 59 runs on the final day; with victory and a likely Surrey draw closing the gap at the top of the table to a single point.Dom Sibley reverted to type after his 56-ball half-century in the first innings by soaking up 34 balls, admittedly 16 coming the previous evening, before he dangled his bat at an Abbas delivery which angled across him.Without Sam Hain and with Sibley already departed, there were fears Warwickshire could collapse in a similar manner to the first innings. Hain is with England Lions this week and is their top scorer with 716 runs – and also scored twin centuries on his last appearance on this ground.Davies stood up for 215 long, dogged, minutes though. Davies, who joined from Lancashire last winter has a reputation for being an attack-minded player, here he put away almost all his shots for the greater good. Other than being spilt at second slip very early on, he barely offered a yelp of a half appeal.Chris Benjamin stuck with him for almost an hour and a half as the 2022 Championship theme of a softening paired with a slow Ageas Bowl pitch made the game feel like it had often paused. Barker eventually got him just before lunch with another nibble behind when pushing across a right-handed batter. An inviting spot of rough outside a left-handed batters’ off stump was Dawson’s target area, with Dan Mousley and Will Rhodes attempting to defend against the risk. Dawson would get the pair of them lbw with identical sharp turning and low bouncing balls.Abbas is perfect for this type of slow wicket as his metronomic bowling occasionally produces a surprise moment of inspiration. He ended Matt Lamb’s stay by bereaving his leg and off stumps of their triplet. The Pakistani then offered Davies width which the opener gratefully picked up on with the intention of taking him to fifty, but Aneurin Donald plucked out a screamer at point. Davies was forced to trudge back to the dressing room after 154 balls.Abbas’ spell of five overs was worth two for 12 but despite reaching the lower-middle order, Hampshire were frustrated by first-innings top scorer Nathan McAndrew and Warwickshire’s second leading run-getter Burgess.Fidel Edwards was on the pitch at tea as he was given a gift by Rod Bransgrove to commemorate his five years at Hampshire. How his former county wished for his explosivity as McAndrew and Burgess made sure they’d have to bat again. They added 81, Warwickshire’s highest partnership of the match, with little issue, despite the second new ball. Burgess picked up his fifth 50-plus score of the campaign in 103 deliveries.Barker was the man to go bang-bang this time. Burgess, who had been dropped on six, fell toeing a drive to Donald at point before McAndrew tickled behind. Oliver Hannon-Dalby lobbed a simple catch to square leg with Warwickshire closing on 212 for nine.

Arteta personally wants Arsenal to sign £50m Saka replacement in January

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is personally very eager for the Gunners to go and attempt a deal for one very highly-rated forward this month, as his side continue to scour the market for a potential Bukayo Saka replacement.

Arsenal set sights on signing £20m player as Arteta decides "top priority"

The Spaniard wants something above all for his squad.

Arteta watched on from the Emirates Stadium sidelines as Newcastle United clinched a 2-0 semi-final first-leg win against his side, with goals from rumoured Arsenal transfer target Alexander Isak and England winger Anthony Gordon giving the north Londoners a real mountain to climb at St. James’ Park on February 5.

Arsenal are seriously missing star winger Saka’s output right now -who is expected to be out until March after undergoing surgery on his hamstring – and that is highlighted by Arteta’s men spurning a host of chances against Newcastle.

“Nothing – try to improve,” said Arteta on what Arsenal can do to be more clinical.

“You know, there are things that we could have done better. We were unlucky in moments. You need a certain luck for the ball to bounce there. You need that intuition as well, and if not, we’re going to have to generate more. That’s the thing that we can do. Then the probability will be higher for us to win, but certainly against this team to produce what we have produced, and looking back at the last six games that I watched, I haven’t seen it. But the result says 0-2, unfortunately.

“I think we kicked a lot of the balls over the bar, and it’s tricky because this ball flies a lot, and we discussed that as well. So there are details that we can do better. But, in the end, that’s gone. You know, this is no way back. It’s about the next game, and that’s the reality of our world.”

Mikel Arteta wants Arsenal to sign Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams

Arsenal are believed to be scouring the market for a goalscoring winger to assist them in the final third, in place of the injured Saka, and you couldn’t do any better than Athletic Bilbao sensation Nico Williams in that respect.

The Spain international finished 23/24 with an impressive 19 assists and eight goals in all competitions, and Williams was a reported target for Arsenal in the summer window.

However, the £200,000-per-week winger appeared to decide on remaining at Bilbao, for this season at least, but that isn’t to say that a winter move is completely ruled out.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Arteta personally wants Arsenal to sign Williams in January, with the 22-year-old’s contract also possessing a buy-out clause of around £50 million.

That being said, a summer transfer is deemed more plausible, considering the total finances involved when factoring in wages. Williams also isn’t agitating to leave Bilbao right now, so Arsenal would seemingly need to make an offer he can’t refuse.

The Euro 2024 star has completed more successful take-ons per 90 than any other Bilbao player in La Liga this season, and is tied with his brother Inaki for shots attempted per match (WhoScored).

Their next Coutinho: Liverpool could sign a "future Ballon d’Or winner"

Liverpool’s return to Champions League action was a success on Tuesday night as they battled hard to seal a 2-1 win over Ligue 1 side Lille at Anfield.

The Reds needed a second-half strike from youngster Harvey Elliott to secure all three points in the European clash, after Jonathan David’s goal cancelled out Mo Salah’s opener.

Arne Slot’s men have now won all seven of their matches in the league phase so far, and have already qualified for the next stage of the competition, with one game still to play.

It was just Elliott’s second goal of the season in all competitions, the other coming against Southampton in the League Cup, in what has been a frustrating campaign for the 21-year-old.

The England U21 international has yet to start a match in the Premier League, coming off the bench just eight times so far, as he has struggled to make himself a regular under Slot.

Harvey Elliott celebrates for Liverpool

Liverpool’s manager has preferred the most industrious, yet still technically excellent, options at his disposal, with the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones, and Ryan Gravenberch.

Slot does not have a first-team star, who is ready to play week-in-week-out, with the midfield wizardry that former Reds star Philippe Coutinho provided.

Philippe Coutinho's Liverpool career

Like Elliott, the Brazil international was a diminutive attacking midfielder who wanted to make an impact at the top end of the pitch with dribbles, shots, and key passes.

During his time on Merseyside, Coutinho racked up a return of 54 goals and 43 assists in 201 appearances for the club in all competitions, which shows that he offered quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

Not only was the former Inter wizard’s output in the final third impressive, but the midfield dynamo was also a pleasure to watch and a player who had the quality to score goals out of nothing.

Coutinho was a mercurial talent who could cut onto his right foot to score unbelievable goals at his best, with his terrific ball-striking ability and creativity from range and from inside the box, as you can see in the clips below.

The Brazilian sensation’s form over the years eventually caught the eye of Spanish giants Barcelona, who swooped in to sign the midfielder for a reported fee of £142m in January 2018.

That represented a huge profit on the £8.5m that the club had spent to sign him from Inter, which made that initial fee they paid the Italian team look like a bargain in hindsight.

Liverpool could, now, strike a similar deal to land their next version of Coutinho by signing one of their reported targets in the January transfer window.

Liverpool's interest in Ligue 1 talent

It was recently reported that Liverpool are one of a number of clubs eyeing up a potential swoop to sign Lyon attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki before February’s deadline.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Reds are said to have stepped up their interest in the France U21 international and are willing to pay the £19m fee that the Ligue 1 side are demanding for the 21-year-old magician.

It has been claimed that Lyon’s financial position has forced them to consider cashing in on Cherki this month, and a fee of £19m would be enough to secure the young star’s services before the end of the January transfer window.

Rayan Cherki in action for Lyon

The Premier League leaders are not the only interested party, however, as Turkish giants Fenerbahce are reportedly in talks to sign the midfield sensation, whilst Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, and Bayern Munich have also been linked with the French ace.

This means that there could be plenty of competition for his signature and that it will not be an easy deal for Liverpool to get over the line, as they could need to beat these clubs in a race for his services.

Slot should, though, push for the board to wrap up a transfer for Cherki before the end of the January transfer window because he could provide a spark in the middle of the park, akin to the one Coutinho provided during his time at Anfield.

Why Rayan Cherki could be Philippe Coutinho 2.0

Like the Brazilian, Liverpool could sign the Lyon attacking midfielder for a reasonable fee, as £19m is hardly breaking the bank for a potentially exciting addition to the squad, and it leaves room for the club to possibly make a profit on him in the future.

Cherki is also a mercurial attacking midfielder, like Coutinho, who has immense technical quality and the ability to score impressive goals, due to his ball-striking skills, which were on full display in training for France in the clip below.

The 21-year-old dynamo, who StatsBomb founder Ted Knutson described as a “masterful dribbler”, has already racked up 22 goals and 33 assists in 163 matches in all competitions for Lyon to date, despite his age.

Given that he made his debut in the 2019/20 campaign, it is easy to forget that Cherki is still an incredibly young player with plenty of time left to develop and improve. In fact, The Athletic’s Alex Barker went as far as to say that he is a “future Ballon D’or winner” in 2023, and there are still many years left for that to come true.

Whilst he is not at Ballon D’or level yet, the French playmaker’s form for Lyon, domestically and in Europe, has been very impressive in the 2024/25 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, Cherki has produced five goals and 16 ‘big chances’ created in 14 starts in Ligue 1 and the Europa League combined, which speaks to his ability to make things happen in the final third on a regular basis.

Like Coutinho, the £19m-rated wizard has the quality to dribble past opponents consistently whilst also influencing games with goals, key passes, and assists, which is why he can be a joy for supporters to watch.

Having won the toss, Fire sent in Invincibles and quickly added to the pain currently being felt by England star Jason Roy by sending him packing for a mere 10 runs off as many balls. If that was an improvement on his golden duck in the opening round of the Hundred against London Spirt, he showed his frustration at tickling the ball to short fine leg by tossing his bat in the air as he walked back to the pavilion. The pace attack of David Payne, Jake Ball and George Scrimshaw bowled tidily enough on a tricky wicket to initially restrict the run rate. Given they only took one wicket in their heavy defeat against the reigning champions, Southern Brave, in their opening game it didn’t take them long to improve on that.Scrimshaw returned the favour to Payne, who caught Roy, by catching the dangerous Rilee Rossouw at short third and all of a sudden it was 22 for 2 with two key batters back in the hutch.Sam Billings steadied the ship alongside Jacks until he left two balls after being struck in the box and taking a very necessary injury break. His departure, lbw to Ryan Higgins, made it 51 for 3 from 41 balls and put even more responsibility on the shoulders of Jacks. The opener, Surrey’s top scorer in the Blast, steered the side to 57 for 3 at the halfway mark, reached his half-century with a cracking four through extra cover off Payne and then went on the rampage with a series of boundaries. His 50 came up in 36 balls and he added a further 31 off his next nine deliveries before holing out on the boundary off the penultimate ball of the innings. A four off the last ball by Tom Curran meant the Invincibles had set a reasonable target of 154.Joe Clarke gave the home side a good start, punishing spinner Danny Briggs with successive sixes in his opening over. He would go onto top score with 37 as he enjoyed stands of 46 with Tom Banton and then 26 with Ben Duckett. But once he was caught in the deep aiming for another boundary off Tom Curran the writing was on the wall for Fire. They had only made 107 off 100 balls against the Brave and were eventually held to 119 for 6 as Sam and Tom Curran put on the squeeze, both conceding only 24 runs from their 20 balls each.Sunil Narine chipped in with three wickets as he conceded 21 runs off 20 balls.
