This season has been a rough one for Tottenham Hotspur.
Ange Postecoglou’s side have been utterly ravaged by injuries, which has played a significant part in their exits from the FA Cup and League Cup, as well as their poor form in the Premier League, where they sit in 12th place.
However, this weekend finally brought some much-needed positivity, as against fellow strugglers Manchester United, the North Londoners turned up and came away with all three points courtesy of a James Maddison goal.
James Maddison celebrates for Tottenham
At his best, the Englishman can be one of the most dangerous midfielders in the league, just like Dejan Kulusevski, but surprisingly, the pair are being outscored by a former Spurs flop signed by Mauricio Pochettino and then sold for a loss almost six years ago.
Maddison and Kulusevski's seasons so far
It would be fair to say that, much like Spurs overall, this season has been full of ups and downs for Maddison.
For example, the former Leicester City star has excelled in big matches, such as over the weekend or against Manchester City at the Etihad, where he scored a brace and was named the fans’ Player of the Match.
However, he’s also been taken out of the starting lineup on several occasions by the manager, with just 22 of his 32 appearances being starts, which has seen him play just 1931 minutes of first-team football, although, in that time, he’s been able to score ten goals and provide six assists, which is really quite impressive.
In contrast to his teammate, Kulusevski has been a near constant in the first team this season, and while his performances of late haven’t been quite up to the standard of those earlier in the campaign, he remains arguably the most important player in the team.
The former Juventus star has made 40 appearances, totalling 2940 minutes, in which he’s racked up an impressive tally of nine goals and ten assists, which comes out to a goal involvement every 2.10 games, or every 154.73 minutes.
However, while both players have enjoyed relatively fruitful campaigns in front of goal, they are being outscored by a former Spurs flop.
The Spurs flop outscoring Maddison and Kulusevski
While Pochettino was undoubtedly one of the best managers Spurs have had in recent history, he was responsible for his fair share of poor signings.
The likes of DeAndre Yedlin, Serge Aurier, Clinton N’Jie and Tanguy Ndombele all joined the North Londoners under the Argentine’s watch and were all incredibly disappointing.
Likewise, Vincent Janssen, who joined the club for around £19m in the summer of 2016 from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, also failed to live up to the expectations he set with his impressive performances in the 15/16 campaign.
Tottenham flop Vincent Janssen.
For example, in just 49 appearances that season, the Heesch-born marksman racked up an incredible haul of 32 goals and seven assists, which works out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.25 games, so hopes were relatively high when he made his way to N17.
Unfortunately, things just didn’t work out in England, and in his first year, he produced just six goals and four assists in 38 games, which was enough to see him labelled “dreadful” by journalist John Laverty and sent to Fenerbahce on loan the following season.
Upon his return to London, he made just three appearances in the 18/19 campaign before being sold to Mexican outfit Monterrey for just £8m in July 2019.
Across three years in Mexico, the 22-capped international scored 24 goals and produced five assists in 93 games, which might not be a spectacular return, but it was good enough to earn him a move to Belgian side Royal Antwerp, where he has been a sensation.
In total, the 30-year-old poacher has scored 49 goals and provided 19 assists in 124 games for the Belgian outfit and played a pivotal role in their league-winning campaign in his first season with the club.
This season has seen the experienced marksman rack up an impressive haul of 11 goals and seven assists in just 30 appearances, which is one more than Maddison has managed and two more than Kulusevski.

Ultimately, Spurs were probably right to cut their losses on Janssen when they did, but we can’t help but wonder how the Dutchman would fare under the ultra-attacking Postecoglou, especially in light of Solanke’s recent injury.

Tasmania veterans take seven wickets between them to put the visitors in control after bowling Victoria out for just 121 on day one

Wickets tumbled as Jackson Bird and Peter Siddle helped put Tasmania in a strong position at stumps on day one of the Sheffield Shield clash with Victoria. The two quicks fired as the Tigers skittled their hosts for 121 after winning the toss and bowling first on a green deck at the MCG.Bird was the chief destroyer with 4 for 13 from 15 overs, including seven maidens, while Siddle and Nathan Ellis also did some damage on Thursday.Captain Jordan Silk and Jake Doran then guided Tasmania to 4 for 102 in reply, trailing by just 19 runs heading into day two.Matthew Wad and Ben McDermott made starts for the Tigers but were both dismissed bowled.Shield debutants Sam Elliott and Campbell Kellaway both showed glimpses of their potential for Victoria.Fast bowler Elliott, the son of former Test batter Matthew Elliott, removed Tasmania’s openers Caleb Jewell and Tim Ward in claiming figures of 2 for 20 from 10 overs.Earlier, Kellaway made 23 with the bat and soaked up 82 balls as Victoria staggered to a grim first innings total. It continued a poor run for Victoria, following tallies of 63 and 132 in an innings defeat to Queensland earlier this month.Opener Travis Dean was out for his third consecutive duck after a pair against the Bulls.Nic Maddinson and Ashley Chandrasinghe were also out cheaply as Tasmania’s new-ball attack had the hosts in all sorts of trouble, reducing them to 3 for 10.Allrounder Fergus O’Neill, Matt Short and Kellaway helped lift Victoria’s tally into triple figures.Elliott and Kellaway were selected with Test duo Marcus Harris and Scott Boland, as well as Prime Minister’s XI pair Peter Handscomb and Todd Murphy, unavailable due to national commitments.Tasmania recalled Ellis in place of Riley Meredith, who has been managed.
In recent times, Celtic have been renowned for their business model at Parkhead of buying young players and selling them on for profit, a strategy that chief executive Michael Nicholson described as “successful on and off the field”.
This leads to plenty of players passing through the club, often for a very short period, sometimes making a ginormous impact, and other times leaving having made very little impression at all.
The latter is certainly true of a highly-rated youngster, once labelled “the Scottish Gareth Bale”, whose stint at Parkhead was, at best, unmemorable, and has certainly not lived up to his potential.
Celtic's best and worst loanees
According to Transfermarkt, since 2017, Celtic have taken 16 senior players on loan, not including players such as Daizen Maeda, Jota, Paulo Bernardo, Adam Idah nor Cameron Carter-Vickers, who initially arrived on loan, before making the move permanent.

Fair to say, looking at this list, it’s a real mixed bag, with Mohamed Elyounoussi and Patrick Roberts, almost unquestionably, the two best, both in terms of longevity and output.
On the flip side, the trio that arrived during the behind-closed-doors 2020/21 season, namely Shane Duffy, Jonjoe Kenny and Diego Laxalt, were not great were they, making it very little surprise that campaign was such a catastrophe.
Where Are They Now
Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.
One player on that list, who made fewer than 20 appearances in hoops, managed by both Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon during his brief time at the club, had massive potential, but never fulfilled that hype.
Celtic once had the 'Scottish Gareth Bale'
Oliver Burke was once described, as noted by analyst Kai Watson, as the ‘Scottish Gareth Bale’, with sky-high expectations placed upon his shoulders, hence why RB Leipzig paid a reported £13m for his services, signing him from Nottingham Forest in 2016 when he was still a teenager.
However, as outlined by Mark Walker of the Herald, Burke has had a ‘peculiar career’ since then, viewed as an ‘unpolished diamond’ when he first broke into Forest’s first team, with Steve Madeley of the Athletic describing him as ‘rampaging’ and ‘speedy’.
However, his manager at Leipzig, Ralf Rangnick, essentially intimated that Burke was unable to take on tactical instructions, so his time in Saxony did not go as planned.
The Scotland international, still only 27-years-old, was sold to West Bromwich Albion for £15m in 2017, but made just 24 appearances for the Baggies, loaned out to Celtic, for whom he scored four goals, including this brace against St Mirren.
Since departing Parkhead, Burke has represented Depotivo Alavés, Sheffield United, Millwall twice and Birmingham City, with Joseph Chapman of Birmingham Live describing his loan spell at St Andrew’s as ‘miserable’.
So, where is he in 2025 and how is he doing? Well, the Scot is back in the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen, joining die Grün-Weißen in 2022, but making only 36 appearances for them so far, albeit he was on target during Tuesday’s DFB-Pokal defeat at the hands of 3.Liga side Arminia Bielefeld.
At this peak, Burke was bought for £15m, but is now valued at less than £1m by Transfermarkt, merely a footnote in Celtic’s treble success of 2018/19.

Duo shared five wickets as New Zealand lost 5 for 45 in final session, after Conway-Latham century stand
Himanshu Agrawal02-Jan-2023
Agha Salman celebrates after having Devon Conway caught behind•Associated Press
Agha Salman struck thrice with his offbreaks, while Naseem Shah’s encouraging reverse swing continued to trouble New Zealand, who lost five for 45 in the final session after dominating play across the morning and afternoon. The visitors had piled up 119 and 107 in the first two sessions for the loss of one wicket. The last one fetched them only 83 runs with the loss of five more.Devon Conway hit 122 out of New Zealand’s total of 309 on the first day, riding his luck on the way to a fourth Test hundred, and continuing on a fantastic start to his Test career after becoming the fastest from his country to 1000 runs in the format during the first Test of the tour. He also made up after falling for 92 in the first match.Play in the evening began with Abrar Ahmed bowling his 15th over in a row – albeit separated by the tea break. Naseem then beat Kane Williamson’s outside edge on the first ball of the second over after resumption, only for replays to show a faint tickle. That was a sign of things to come, as Naseem kept clocking 140kph while reversing the ball against both Williamson and Conway. But it was Salman who struck first, getting the ball to dip and turn away from Conway, who went jabbing and edged behind to Sarfaraz Ahmed in the 63rd over. Next over, Naseem pitched one perfectly on the fuller side of a length on fourth stump, with Williamson’s outside edge also landing in the gloves of Sarfaraz, who went low and tumbled in front of first slip to complete the grab. That left New Zealand with virtually two new batters at the crease in Henry Nicholls and Daryl Mitchell, with the latter happy to take a good stride forward and getting across off stump to try and negate the movement Naseem got it. Naseem tried going around the wicket – and with it, wide of the crease – to the left-hander Nicholls, as both he and Salman tied the two batters down. That is when Mitchell fell to a classical offspinner’s dismissal, missing his clip across the line when Salman tossed one up outside off and got it to turn in through bat and pad, and hit off stump. With the ball having split its seam, the umpires changed it immediately after. But Pakistan stuck to Hasan Ali and Salman, as they kept the scoring in check, with the fast bowler preferring to go short, and the offspinner teasing the batters with loop. Salman got his third just seven deliveries before the second new ball was due, although credit for that would go to Babar Azam.Standing at slip, Babar was the only one who reacted and half-appealed after Nicholls tried to slash a short ball outside off turning away from him. He opted for the review at the last second after umpire Aleem Dar ruled it not out and UltraEdge showed a little snick behind to Sarfaraz.Tom Latham and Devon Conway added their second successive hundred-run partnership•Associated Press
That was the fourth of Dar’s 12 decisions overturned throughout the two Tests on this tour. And New Zealand slid further when Abrar, expensive throughout the day, hit Michael Bracewell flush in front to get him for the third time in as many occasions in the series. The visitors were six down, as Tom Blundell and Ish Sodhi saw them off to stumps.Earlier in the day, the visitors were in the driver’s seat across the first two sessions, losing only Tom Latham for 71 when Naseem had sharply angled one into the left-hander at high pace to break a strong opening stand of 134 – Latham and Conway’s second successive century stand for the first wicket – in the 36th over. Naseem had conceded just six runs in that five-over spell when he bowled three maidens, even as Abrar kept leaking runs at the other end. Having gone for 26 in five overs before lunch, Abrar was taken for another 41 in his first six overs after the break, with Conway confidently driving and whipping the spinner each time he erred in line or length. But Conway also had some fortune going his way throughout. Pakistan had reviewed a not-out verdict by Alex Wharf when Conway, on 39, was beaten by one that angled in off a good length, only for the ball projected to be going over the stumps. When he was on 86, an outside edge fell short of the lone slip and two overs later, when Conway was on 89, Hasan induced an edge to gully, where Saud Shakeel spilled it after diving to his right. Conway finally reached his hundred in the 52nd over, when he flicked Mir Hamza between mid-on and midwicket, as New Zealand piled on the misery on Pakistan. After opting to bat, New Zealand raced to 54 in the first 11 overs before a quiet period slowed them down. Latham also was ruled out lbw by umpire Wharf, before he used the DRS to reverse it, having inside edged it onto his pads.Eventually though, the day ended in fine balance, as Pakistan hit back in the evening session, with New Zealand losing their way from a dominant 234 for 1 to only a stable 309 for 6.
