Man City send scouts to watch 21-year-old midfielder compared to Bellingham

Manchester City have sent scouts to watch an international midfielder who has been compared to Jude Bellingham, according to a new report.

City's season takes another turn for the worse

Just when it looked like things were getting back on track for Manchester City, their season took another turn for the worse at the weekend as they were beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. Pep Guardiola’s side bossed possession on the day, but couldn’t make their dominance pay, with a goal from winger Callum Hudson-Odoi enough to seal all three points for Forest.

The defeat resulted in City slipping back outside the top four as they were leapfrogged by Chelsea following their win over Leicester City the next day.

Manchester City manager PepGuardiola

In light of the defeat, Guardiola gave a frank assessment of his team’s chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

“We have to win games and if we don’t win enough games in a row to be secure, it will be a battle. We have 10 games left and we have to win a lot of games to qualify. It’s as simple as that,” said the Spanish boss, who guided City to Champions League glory in 2023.

“To find a way, you have to play better. You have to find something. It will not come from the sky. You have to do it. In situations you have to find something,” he added. “The situation is what it is, we have 10 games left starting next Saturday against Brighton, international break after and then we will see what happens.”

City scouting Crystal Palacew star Adam Wharton

Regardless of whether City finish in the top four, Guardiola will no doubt be looking to reinforce his side in the summer after what’s been an incredibly difficult season. According to TBR Football, one player that the Cityzens are keen on is Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, whom they sent scouts to watch in action over the weekend as the Eagles beat Ipswich Town 1-0.

TBR Football report that City making a move for Wharton in the summer cannot be ruled out, with Guardiola understood to be a big admirer of the 21-year-old. Palace, however, are planning to put up a strong fight to keep Wharton, and are even prepared to offer him a substantial new contract to keep him at Selhurst Park.

Wharton only joined Palace in February 2024 from Championship side Blackburn Rovers, but has already made a big impression. Now also being linked with a sensational move to Real Madrid, the midfielder has been likened to Jude Bellingham, who moved from Birmingham City to Borussia Dortmund and then to Madrid in just a few years.

“To be brutally honest, you wouldn’t expect to see that trajectory from Blackburn Rovers to Real Madrid in such a short space of time,” David Prutton told Football League World.

“But the way he moves and gets about the pitch and the understated manner in which he approaches his profession, his ability to handle the pressure – whether it’s England squads or Premier League football – means you have a lot of the make-up that would help him to perform at a top club.

“There’s the template of Jude Bellingham who managed to bounce up into the first-team and then move abroad and seal a huge move to Real Madrid.”

Rishabh Pant undergoes knee ligament surgery in Mumbai hospital

Next course of treatment and rehabilitation will be discussed by Dr Dishaw Pardiwala, who conducted the procedure, and the BCCI’s medical team

Rishabh Pant has undergone a successful knee ligament surgery, conducted at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital on Friday, BCCI sources have confirmed.”Rishabh Pant has successfully undergone a knee ligament surgery on Friday. He will be under observation. Further course of action and rehabilitation will be advised by Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala and followed by the BCCI sports science and medicine team,” PTI reported a BCCI source as saying.Pant was admitted to the hospital in Mumbai after being airlifted from Dehradun on Wednesday for intervention on one of two ligament tears in his knee. He was examined by doctors upon reaching the Mumbai hospital.Dr Pardiwala, the Head of Centre for Sports Medicine and Director of Arthroscopy & Shoulder Service at the hospital, had previously worked with Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja as well as with other athletes.

The BCCI, while appreciative of the immediate treatment given to Pant at the two hospitals in Uttarakhand, preferred to have his injuries treated by the board’s own empanelled medical team. While Pant’s medical insurance covers his treatment, the cost of the air ambulance was borne by the board. On December 30, Pant was on his way to see his mother in Roorkee in Uttarakhand, when his car crashed into a road divider around 5.30am. He miraculously got away without life-threatening injuries even as his car went up in flames. After immediate emergency care at Saksham Hospital in Roorkee, Pant was moved to Max Hospital in Dehradun, where he had plastic surgery on the laceration wounds, facial injuries and abrasions. MRI scans done on his brain and spine that evening returned normal results, but scans of the knee and foot were postponed because of pain and swelling. It is too early to put a timeframe on Pant’s return to athletic activity and then top-flight cricket. He hasn’t started walking yet. India’s three big assignments in 2023 are the four Tests against Australia at home in February-March, a possible World Test Championship final in England in June, and the ODI World Cup in India in October-November. Pant’s chances of playing the Test series against Australia appear to be slim, though it can’t be ruled out. The other big event is the IPL, in April-May, where Pant captains Delhi Capitals.

He's worth more than Nwaneri: Arsenal must regret selling "phenomenal" star

Arsenal’s academy has produced countless talents who have gone on to star in the first team over recent years, allowing them to achieve various levels of success at the Emirates.

Bukayo Saka is undoubtedly the biggest example of such a star in the current first-team setup, making 250 appearances since his debut in 2018 and nailing down his starting place in Mikel Arteta’s side.

The England international has notched 67 goals and 64 assists, often being the go-to man in terms of contributions in the final third over the last few years.

Myles Lewis-Skelly is the latest player to make the jump from the Hale End academy setup, featuring 24 times for the Gunners this campaign, scoring his first professional goal in the 5-1 rout against Manchester City.

The aforementioned pair have also been joined by another youngster in recent weeks, taking full advantage of the opportunity handed to him after Saka’s injury layoff.

Ethan Nwaneri’s stats for Arsenal in 2024/25

17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri has been a player in and around the first-team picture over the last couple of years, making his senior debut in 2022/23 coming off the substitutes bench in the win over Brentford.

The substitute appearance made him the youngest player in Premier League history at the age of just 15, showcasing the faith that Arteta has in the teenager to be a huge star in North London.

Ethan Nwaneri for Arsenal

With Saka still sidelined with his hamstring injury, Nwaneri has been given the chance to star in a right-wing position, something which he’s taken with both hands, as seen by his respective tallies.

Despite his tender age, the academy graduate has registered eight goals and one assist in his 28 outings, scoring in various competitions such as the Premier League and the Champions League.

However, despite his impressive form at the Emirates, he’s still valued lower than one player who also developed through the youth levels before moving on to pastures new.

The former Arsenal star now worth more than Nwaneri

Given the volume of talent coming through the youth levels at Arsenal, not every player will be able to make a huge impact on the first-team, subsequently having to ply their trade away from their boyhood side.

Attacking midfielder Emile Smith Rowe was a player who emerged out of the academy with high hopes in North London, potentially having a huge part to play in the club’s future.

The 24-year-old would receive his first opportunity to impress throughout the same season as Saka, featuring in six cup games and registering three goals – handing supporters a reason to be excited.

He would subsequently spend periods out on loan at RB Leipzig and Huddersfield Town before returning to the club ahead of the 2020/21 season, hoping to make an impact and secure a consistent starting role.

Smith Rowe would make 115 appearances after his return, but the majority of which came from the substitutes’ bench, leading to a permanent move to Fulham in the summer just gone.

The midfielder’s move across London to Craven Cottage has allowed him to recapture his best form, notching five goals and two assists since his move – leading to one analyst dubbing him as “phenomenal”.

As a result of his performances under Marco Silva, he’s now valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, a figure higher than current star Nwaneri, who’s only valued at £25m despite his impressive rise to stardom.

Given his form and current market value, Arsenal must regret the decision to allow him to leave, showcasing to his former employers what they’re missing by allowing him to depart.

It’s great to see a former player star after the early promise he possessed, but many will be wishing that he was still plying his trade for the Gunners – offering them another dimension in their hunt for Premier League success.

Hasan Ali, Oliver Hannon-Dalby restore Warwickshire control with last-wicket stand

Momentum had previously been with Essex seamers, led by Doug Bracewell

Essex 126 and 86 for 4 (Westley 28, Rushworth 2-21) trail Warwickshire 242 (Rhodes 63, Hasan 53*, Bracewell 4-51) by 30 runs A buccaneering tenth-wicket stand of 70 restored Warwickshire’s control after Essex fought back hard on the second day of their captivating LV=Insurance County Championship match at Edgbaston.Essex closed day two on 86 for 4, still trailing by 30, in a mesmeric contest between two potential title-challengers.After bowling Essex out for 126 on day one, Warwickshire appeared set for only a modest lead when they lost seven wickets in 17 overs to dip to 172 for 9. The momentum was firmly with Essex’s seamers, led by Doug Bracewell’s 4 for 51, but last pair Hasan Ali (53 not out) and Oliver Hannon-Dalby clouted 70 from 69 balls to lift their side to 242.The wagging tail extended the lead to an imposing 116 and piled the pressure back on Essex who need their middle and lower orders to bat big tomorrow. Further twists are likely in a match which has fluctuated wildly throughout. After Warwickshire resumed on the second morning on 17 for 2, Will Rhodes (63) and Sam Hain (45) batted through the morning session to take their side to 104 for 2 at lunch – just 22 behind. A big lead beckoned but the seeds of an Essex fightback had been sown by Sam Cook and Simon Harmer. Late in the morning they bowled 14 overs for 17 runs to ensure that, despite wickets intact, the home side had not got away. Then, after lunch, wickets came in a heap.Shane Snater triggered the collapse with a brace of excellent balls which did for Hain and Dan Mousley in successive overs. Ed Barnard batted attractively for 28 but Bracewell’s removal of him, bowled through a drive, triggered the loss of five wickets in 32 balls. Sam Cook trapped Danny Briggs lbw while Bracewell forced fatal edges from Michael Burgess, Chris Rushworth and Rhodes who, having batted with great responsibility, departed cursing himself at being lured into reaching outside off stump. From 172 for 9, Warwickshire’s last pair brought the crowd to its feet with an audacious counter attack. Hasan Ali began it by launching Cook twice into the Hollies Stand. Hannon-Dalby joined in with successive sixes pulled off Bracewell to raise the 50 stand from as many balls. Hasan located the seating again to bring up his half-century from 33 balls. When Hannon-Dalby finally edged Snater behind, the flow of the match had reversed spectacularly again.Second time around, Essex lost Nick Browne, bowled by Rushworth in the third over. Tom Westley and Alastair Cook started to put down roots of the hefty stand their team required but fell lbw in the space of three overs. Barnard ousted Westley before Hassan dismissed Cook. On a damp, grey afternoon, in front of a smattering of Championship diehards, the former England captain trudged off the Edgbaston field where he enjoyed some of his greatest moments – 294 vs India, 243 vs West Indies – for almost certainly the last time: a poignant dimension to two days of cricket with more angles than you can shake a stick at.

Berta must axe 4/10 Arsenal flop who earns a lot more than Nwaneri

Since taking charge of Arsenal in December 2019, Mikel Arteta has dramatically altered the club’s trajectory.

The Gunners are now a team who regularly challenge for the Premier League and have made the Champions League quarter-finals for the second year in a row.

While the Spaniard’s philosophy and tactics have played a significant role in the club’s rapid rise, his signings have been just as effective.

However, the team does look like it’ll need a minor overhaul this summer to keep it competitive, meaning incoming Sporting Director Andrea Berta will need to move several players, including one who did not impress last night and earns significantly more than Ethan Nwaneri.

The Arsenal players who should be moved on

So, with an incredibly important summer of reshaping the team to finally get over the line to come, we’ll start with the players who are almost certainly set to leave due to their contracts expiring at the end of the campaign.

Thomas Partey and Jorginho’s deals expire on June 30th, and while they could likely still contribute to the side next year, reports suggesting they’ll stay are few and far between.

Similarly, Raheem Sterling and Neto’s loan deals will run out at the end of May, and while there is a slim chance the latter could join for free, the former has proven beyond all doubt that he no longer has what’s required to play for a title-chasing side.

Kieran Tierney has already agreed a pre-contract with Celtic, and while the player he started in place of last night, Leandro Trossard, still has another year on his deal, it might be time for the club to cash in on the supposed interest in him from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad in September.

The Belgian has been rather underwhelming this term, racking up a tally of just 13 goal involvements in 42 appearances, although at least he’s getting regular game time, unlike Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The Ukrainian international was a key part of the club’s initial title charge in the 22/23 campaign, but with him earning £150k-per-week and barely featuring this term, it might be time to move him on in the summer, even if he did well against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night.

Finally, another player who should be sold as soon as possible was one of the rare starters last night, but unlike Zinchenko, he did not make a case for his further inclusion.

The Arsenal ace who should be sold

Unfortunately, a few starters from last night’s clash didn’t step up to the plate, such as Jorginho, but in this instance, we are talking about Jakub Kiwior.

The Polish international, who joined the club from Sepzia in January 2023 for around £20m, was defensively shoddy, poor with the ball at his feet and earned a dismal but fair 4/10 match rating from GOAL’s Sean Walsh.

However, while his performance against PSV was disappointing, the argument for selling him goes beyond that, as even though the club has endured plenty of injuries this season, he’s started just nine games all.

Riccardo Calafiori, Jurrien Timber and Myles Lewis-Skelly are ahead of him in the pecking order at left-back, and when Takehiro Tomiyasu recovers from his surgery, we imagine he will be too.

It’s the same story at centre-back, with the Italian, Dutchman, Japanese international and Ben White all likely ahead of him without even getting to the Gunners’ regular starting pair of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes.

If the 25-year-old defender, whom content creator Phil Costa branded “not good enough,” was earning a minuscule wage to sit on the bench and only make an occasional start, his presence in the squad wouldn’t be an issue.

However, while he isn’t one of the big earners, he’s still making £58k-per-week, which is way more than the likes of Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly, who are already contributing to the first team in a significant way.

Ultimately, while Kiwior isn’t a bad footballer, he’s not of the standard required to be an Arsenal player, and with the summer a chance to add some world-class talent to the team, Berta and Co should look to move him on.
