In Focus: Signing Kieran Tierney would solve Man United’s left-back issue

According to reports in the Daily Mirror, Manchester United are ready to battle Premier League rivals Arsenal for the signing of £15m-rated Celtic defender Kieran Tierney.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Daily Mirror says that Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho is keen to sign a new left-back this summer with Luke Shaw’s future at Old Trafford in doubt after he failed to impress the Portuguese boss last season.

Mourinho has been keeping a close eye on the performances of the 20-year-old north of the border, and he is keen for the club to launch a £15m offer for the Scotland international, according to the Daily Mirror.

The report adds that Arsenal are also keen on the full-back, but having signed Sead Kolasinac their interest may have now cooled.

However, the Bhoys want to keep Tierney for at least another season as he still has four years left on his contract.

How good was Tierney last season?

Despite his tender years – he only turned 20 years of age last month – the left-back established himself as a regular in the Celtic side last season.

He made 40 appearances in all competitions for Brendan Rodgers’ men – it would have been more if he hadn’t have ruptured his cruciate ligament mid-season – finishing the campaign with two goals and an impressive 12 assists.

The latter statistic shows that he is as good from an attacking point of view as he is defensively, and he was also one of the stand-out Scottish performers in their 2-2 draw against England at Hampden Park last month.

Would he be a good signing for United?

With Luke Shaw failing to impress and the likes of Matteo Darmian, Ashley Young and Marcos Rojo more comfortable in their natural positions rather than at left-back, the spot certainly looks to be up for grabs next season.

While Mourinho wouldn’t want to put too much pressure on the 20-year-old right away if he did move to Old Trafford, he has shown with his performances for Celtic in the Champions League that he is capable of performing at the very highest level.

Could they get him for £15m?

It’s difficult to see Celtic accepting that price considering some of the crazy prices being bandied about in the summer transfer window already, but it isn’t totally out of the question – especially if the player wants to go.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, it seems as though Tierney is destined for the top and he could be a great signing for Man United, if they can convince Celtic to sell.

In Focus: Newcastle should stick with Darlow if they are offered Randolph

According to reports on the Chronicle Live, Newcastle United are likely to be offered the chance to sign West Ham United goalkeeper Darren Randolph if the Irons complete a loan deal for Manchester City stopper Joe Hart.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Chronicle Live says that the Hammers are close to signing the England international on a loan deal with a view to a permanent move, with the east London outfit due to pay 50% of Hart’s £100,000-a-week wages.

If the 30-year-old does arrive at the London Stadium then West Ham will likely look to offload one of Adrian or Darren Randolph, and the latter is more likely to leave after the former only signed a new two-year deal earlier this summer.

The Chronicle Live says that as Rafa Benitez is openly looking to sign a new goalkeeper, it is believed that Randolph could be offered to the Magpies as he looks for regular first team football.

The report adds that Benitez has already missed out on Willy Caballero to Chelsea, while he has made no progress in a deal to sign Pepe Reina from Napoli.

How did Randolph do last season?

It was certainly and up and down season for the 30-year-old.

The Republic of Ireland international started the campaign as West Ham’s second-choice goalkeeper behind Adrian but when the Spaniard was dropped following a mistake against Stoke in November, Randolph was given his opportunity to shine.

The stopper looked to stake his claim for the number one spot and he certainly made some outstanding saves – he produced a brilliant stop to deny a Jordan Henderson strike in December – but he also lost his place for the final five Premier League matches of the season, to place his future into doubt.

Would he be a good signing for Newcastle?

It’s difficult to say.

While Randolph has shown some glimpses of excellence both for West Ham and the Republic of Ireland, if Rafa Benitez is looking for a goalkeeper with plenty of Premier League experience then he will look elsewhere.

The 30-year-old has made just 29 English top flight appearances in his career and in that respect, the Magpies would be better off sticking with Karl Darlow or Tim Krul next season.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, while Newcastle may be offered the chance to sign Randolph, Benitez will probably choose to look elsewhere for a new goalkeeper.

Man United fans divided as Ashley Young looks set to see out his contract

According to reports in The Mirror, Manchester United winger Ashley Young looks set to reject interest from Premier League rivals Stoke City and see out the last year of his Red Devils contract.

The Mirror says that the 32-year-old, who is currently injured, was expected to leave Old Trafford this summer as Jose Mourinho won’t hand the versatile star a new deal, with Potters manager Mark Hughes keen to bring him to the Britannia Stadium.

However, Young could choose to stay and it would be a decision that would be backed by Mourinho, with the report adding that the Portuguese boss admires the former Villa man’s versatility as he can play on either side of midfield and defence.

United supporters were quick to have their say on the rumour via social media, and they were divided with their opinions.

While some feel he is “underappreciated”, others believe it is time to sell him for what would likely be a cut-price fee.

Revealed: Man United fans vote Nemanja Matic MOTM vs West Ham

Manchester United kicked off their season with an incredibly convincing 4-0 victory over West Ham at Old Trafford.

The performance and the result provided a much-welcomed variation to last season, when the Red Devils’ inability to find the net cost them dearly – scoring the least goals of any side in the Premier League’s top seven.

That was partly due to the imperious form of Romelu Lukaku at the tip of attack, netting the opening two goals and providing physical menace all afternoon.

But fellow summer signing Nemanja Matic proved equally integral, injecting defensive awareness in United’s engine room to provide a platform for the creative talents around him.

Accordingly, we asked United fans to vote for their man of the match earlier this week and despite Lukaku’s £75million price-tag, it was the Serbian international who ran away with our poll, claiming a whopping 54% of the vote.

As you can see below, Matic’s performance more than justified it…

Oxlade-Chamberlain tells Liverpool fans what to expect from him

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has spoken directly to Liverpool fans through social media on his first day at the club. All eyes were on the 24-year-old as he was put through his paces during his first training session at Melwood. The Reds signed Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal one week ago, but he had to wait to meet his new teammates and manager Jurgen Klopp due to the international break with England. Now, the former Southampton star is fully focused on his club football, and has delivered a message to the fans, telling them what they can expect.

Oxlade-Chamberlain finalised his move to Anfield on deadline day, and he could be thrown into the action against Manchester City in the early kickoff on Saturday.

It will be interesting to see where Klopp decides to play the Englishman, who spent the majority of his Arsenal career as a winger and more recently a wing-back.

The midfielder has previously made it clear that he would like to feature in a more central position.

HYS: Spurs fans… Pick your England squad

Tottenham’s emphatic rise from Champions League qualifying hopefuls to Premier League title-chasers over the last few seasons has seen the north London outfit shoot to the forefront of the England national team.

The Lilywhites have four representatives in Gareth Southgate’s latest squad and that number would be even higher if Danny Rose was fit and Kyle Walker hadn’t completed a huge big-money transfer to Manchester City earlier this summer.

As is often the case, the latest England squad drawn up for World Cup qualifiers with Malta and Slovakia hasn’t pleased everybody, so we’re keen to hear what the fans of some of English football’s biggest clubs have to say about it.

Has Southgate selected the perfect squad, has he somehow overlooked some potentially key players or does the entire team need to be ripped apart and rebuilt from scratch?

Let us know who’d make your England squad by giving each of our 53 suggestions a simple thumbs up or thumbs down…

Four crucial questions Conte must answer to end disappointing record vs Arsenal

There was once a time when Chelsea versus Arsenal was a foregone conclusion, Jose Mourinho famously boasting a near-impeccable record against his opposite number whilst in the Stamford Bridge dugout. But Antonio Conte’s record against the Gunners is far less encouraging – one win and three defeats from four encounters, not least including this season’s Community Shield final. That suggests Chelsea face a tough task in the Premier League this Sunday, despite their London rivals’ poor start to the season. But Conte can turn around his record against Arsenal this weekend when they travel to west London, provided he finds the correct answers to these four questions…

Is Eden Hazard ready to start?

When fully fit, there’s no question Eden Hazard is one of the most valuable assets in the Premier League and certainly the most potent weapon at Antonio Conte’s disposal. But after missing pre-season and the opening weeks of the campaign proper with injury, the Belgium international is still on the slow road to recovery – and Conte appears determined not to rush him back into the starting XI ahead of schedule. Hazard now has two substitute outings under his belt, totalling just shy of 45 minutes, but the winger still looked off the pace against Qarabag in midweek, committing as many unsuccessful touches as successful dribbles and missing 25% of his passes. So, is this the occasion to bring Hazard back into the fold, or should Conte limit his talismanic creator to another appearance from the bench?

Is 3-4-3 the right system?

In stark contrast to his predecessor, Conte’s record against Arsenal is decisively poor, losing three of his four encounters with the Gunners thus far. Of course, the first was the 3-0 humiliation that inspired the switch to 3-4-3 which slingshot Chelsea to the top of the Premier League – Conte and the Blues have hardly looked back since. But the three meetings that followed, even using the trusted 3-4-3 system, produced just one win, including a defeat in last season’s FA Cup final when the Gunners matched up tactically with their London rivals. So, does Conte need to spring a surprise on his opposite number by setting up slightly differently? The 3-6-1 setup used against Tottenham earlier this season wasn’t pretty but certainly did the trick, Chelsea eventually grinding out a 2-1 win against the run of play. Like Spurs, Arsenal like to keep the ball and unlock teams in central areas – could the same tweak work twice?

What can be learned from Liverpool’s 4-0 win?

It’s always good to borrow ideas from successful rivals and fortunately for Chelsea, Liverpool have already laid down the template for how to humiliate Arsenal when they’re away from home this season, dishing out a 4-0 romping of the Gunners prior to the international break. It seems almost implausible Arsenal can put in another away performance against another top six rival as bad as that, but there are aspects of Liverpool’s play Chelsea can naturally mimic. Like the Reds, they have the power and strength in central areas to bog down Arsenal in the middle of the pitch and then hit them on the counter out wide, where the pace of Willian particularly (echoing that of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane) can cause all kinds of problems for the Gunners’ ever-disorganised defence. Knowing how devastating he can be when running at players too, that might just convince Conte to start Hazard on the opposite flank.

How can Chelsea take advantage of the pressure and uncertainty at Arsenal?

Arsenal may have finished up all smiles last weekend after strolling to a relatively routine victory over Bournemouth at home but make no mistake about it – the pressure is still on the north London club and most particularly Arsene Wenger. Rather than a 3-0 win against the Cherries, meetings with top six opposition and particularly Chelsea – who Arsenal have been stuck in the shadow of ever since Jose Mourinho first arrived in the Premier League in 2004 – are what disillusioned Gunners fans, and the wider footballing world, will judge Wenger and this team on. The key for Chelsea, therefore, is finding ways of applying even more pressure on Arsenal before kickoff and during the match itself. Perhaps that requires some cute turns of phrase from Conte during his interactions with the press in the build up to the game, but starting as the stronger side and getting an early goal will inevitably lead to calls of ‘Wenger Out’ from the away end.

Tottenham fans react as Harry Winks is called up to senior England squad

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed via their official club Twitter account on Monday that Harry Winks had received his first call up to the senior England squad, and Spurs fans were delighted with the news.

The 21-year-old midfielder has only recently returned to first team action following an ankle injury he suffered towards the end of last season, but Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate wasted little time in promoting him from the Under-21 sqaud following Fabian Delph’s withdrawal through injury.

Winks has started three of his club’s last four fixtures in all competitions with Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama currently on the sidelines because of injury, and he will hope to bring some impressive performances to the international stage.

Tottenham supporters were quick to have their say on the news via social media, and while some said that it had brought ‘tears to their eyes’, others were quick to give their manager some credit by saying “Poch has done it again”.

Chelsea fans lose their heads over goalkeeper’s outrageous save

Portugal international Eduardo has been with Chelsea since the summer of 2016, but the goalkeeper has still not made a single first-team appearance for the Blues.

Indeed, the 35-year-old is third choice at Stamford Bridge behind Thibaut Courtois and Willy Caballero, meaning that it is unlikely he will feature in the near future.

Eduardo might not be making his mark during matches, but the stopper did something quite spectacular during a training session after the international break.

Everyone loves seeing outstanding pieces of skill, and that was exactly what Eduardo produced during training with the Premier League champions.

Indeed, when Chelsea posted the video on Thursday afternoon, a number of the club’s supporters could not contain their excitement.

Eduardo is unlikely to ever turn out for Chelsea in a first-team match due to the presence of both Courtois and Caballero, but at least he is giving the club’s supporters a glimpse of his talents.

Revealed: Vast majority of Everton fans prefer Dyche to Allardyce as next manager

Everton appear in no huge rush to address their managerial vacancy, especially with the international break just around the corner.

But we’ve already seen some prominent names linked with the Goodison Park hot seat following the dismissal of Ronald Koeman, who oversaw a horrendous start to the season after racking up an unprecedented transfer bill for the Merseyside club during the summer.

Indeed, Sam Allardyce has subtly hinted he would be open to the role, while Sky Sports claim the Toffees are interested in approaching Burnley boss Sean Dyche.

With that in mind, we asked Everton fans earlier this week to vote for who they’d prefer to take the job – the former England boss or the Burnley manager – and 81% of those who took part in our poll selected the latter.

That’s perhaps due to Burnley’s impressive start to the season; after beating Newcastle on Monday night they’re seventh in the table, just three points away from the top four, which is exactly where many expected Everton to be at the start of the season.
