Liverpool should sign Werner and Sancho, says Carragher

Jamie Carragher has told ViaSport he wants both Timo Werner and Jadon Sancho at Liverpool next summer.

What did he say?

The former Reds centre-back was talking on Wednesday, the day after the Anfield outfit’s 1-0 loss against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.

No clues: Can you name the season these iconic Liverpool images belong to?

Speaking about Liverpool’s attacking options, he said: “Things can change very quickly.

“If you look at Tuesday night (against Atletico Madrid), the big problem for Liverpool is when one of those front three are not playing.

“Sadio Mane had to come off and the player they bring on in is Divock Origi, who is a Liverpool legend because of what happened last year at the Wanda Metropolitano, but it’s not quite good enough for the best team in the world to be bringing that quality on.

“Liverpool do need a top attacking player to come in the summer. Sancho or Werner? I’ll take both.”

Unlikely

There has been a lot of talk about potential moves for Jadon Sancho and Timo Werner during the past few weeks and months, and understandably so. The two are amongst some of the best young players on the planet right now – in 31 matches for Borussia Dortmund this season, the former has a huge 16 goals and 17 assists, whilst Werner has 26 and 10 respectively for RB Leipzig in 32 matches.

However, whether they will be able to get their hands on both seems a big ask. The two will set Liverpool back in big fees should they make the switch to Merseyside – BVB are expected to demand at least £100m for the 19-year-old winger, whilst the Germany international has a €58m (£48.5m) release clause at Leipzig (which must be activated by April). That may not be in the same stratosphere as the former, but it is still a considerable amount of money.

Are Liverpool really going to pay such fees for what would likely be back-up options for Jurgen Klopp? After all, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah have been in terrific form so far this campaign – they have 44 goals and 32 assists between them this season – and have helped Liverpool stretch out a 22-point lead at the top of the Premier League. No matter how good those other two are, they would have their work cut out displacing any of that trio – it would be a lot of money to pay for potential benchwarmers.

One may very well be likely, but it would be surprising to see both in the liver bird next season. Carragher may be getting a little bit ahead of himself here.

Liverpool defender van den Berg praised by Reds journalist

The Liverpool Echo’s Reds correspondent, Matt Addison, has hailed defender Sepp van den Berg after his goal for the club’s U23s against Huddersfield Town, per Blood Red Liverpool (February 23, 25:24).

What’s he said?

Van den Berg is on the fringes of the club’s first-team.

The 18-year-old has already made four appearances for the senior side, playing three times in the EFL Cup, including 90 minutes against Arsenal, and once in the FA Cup against Shrewsbury Town.

And Addison believes that his confidence will have swelled after his goal, while also taking the time to praise his performance against the Shrews in the cup.

He said: “For him to get on the scoresheet again, that’s just going to boost his confidence even more.

“I thought against Shrewsbury he was absolutely brilliant. I mean that was by far and away the best I’ve seen him play, for him to take on that responsibility and he seemed to be far more aggressive than he normally has been.

No clues: Can you name the season these iconic Liverpool images belong to?

“He’s obviously a tall, strong player, but you know that that hasn’t always come through when he’s been playing for the under 23s this season.

“Sometimes you know big aerial forwards and long balls over the top can cause trouble but you know I must admit I was slightly concerned for him playing against Shrewsbury.”

He added: “Ki-Jana Hoever, as well, I think is kind of a similar level, they’re very similar age, obviously both from the Netherlands as well.

“So lots of similarities there and look, long term is he going to be a Liverpool player at first team level? Who knows but he’s certainly making strides in the right direction.”

Clearly trust him

Klopp clearly trusts van den Berg.

This is a player who has been drafted into the starting XI on four separate occasions and he is a player who can only improve if he is given the opportunity.

Of course, he has some truly exceptional players in his way, including Virgil van Dijk, the most expensive defender in professional football.

Addison is right to sound a note of caution in the sense that nobody can truly predict whether or not the young Dutchman will end up having a similar impact to his countryman on the senior squad.

But he is certainly doing everything he can and each time he has been called upon, he has stepped up.

If he continues in this vein, he will surely be given more and more chances under Klopp’s management.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have joined the race for a home-grown wonderkid!

Leeds’ Tyler Roberts reacts to Eddie Nketiah’s latest strike

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa must be ruing the form of one his former players.

Ex-loanee Eddie Nketiah scored yet another goal for Arsenal as his second-half strike against Portsmouth saw the Gunners into the FA Cup quarter-finals.

It’s the third time he has found the net since returning from his loan spell at Elland Road in January.

The 20-year-old striker took to Instagram following the match as he expressed his delight over scoring again and his team’s mature performance all round.

Leeds forward Tyler Roberts, who bagged a brace off the bench on Saturday, replied with a simple one-word response, so clearly the pair got on well during their short time together in Yorkshire.

It may be a case of what might’ve been considering Nketiah is firing in goals across the Premier League and FA Cup whilst Tyler Roberts thrived in a makeshift centre-forward role as he contributed to just a second win this year of two or more goals for the Whites.

Patrick Bamford has failed to find the net in seven matches, so arguably, there’s pressure mounting on him to perform as Leeds hone in on league leaders West Brom.

Are you a Championship expert? How much did each of these big-money signings cost?

Nketiah and Roberts could have been a pacey yet lethal frontline to deal with in the Championship, but it wasn’t to be as manager Marcelo Bielsa rarely trusted the Arsenal starlet despite scoring five goals in just 663 minutes of action.

Mikel Arteta is now reaping the rewards of the youngster’s impact, which also drew a four-emoji reaction from Leif Davis – another former Leeds team-mate of Nketiah’s.

And in other news, Leeds fans have gone to town on this “poisoned” figure this week…

Three strikers Mourinho should target for Spurs this summer

The summer transfer window will be a huge indication of what the Jose Mourinho era has in store for Tottenham Hotspur.

The north London outfit were linked with a host of strikers in the January transfer window in a desperate attempt to replace the injured Harry Kane.

However, the club failed to recruit a new forward and have been left without a recognised forward for the remainder of the season.

That Jose Mourinho is longing for July 1st suggests that Spurs will be active in the market this summer.

While Spurs need a complete revamp of their back-line, adding a striker to the squad will be their most necessary addition to the squad.

Danny Ings

Spurs were not heavily linked with Ings in January but reports emerged hinting at potential interest.

The English forward has become Southampton’s most reliable players under Ralph Hasenhüttl, averaging a league goal every 122 minutes.

Ings is the fourth-highest goalscorer in the Premier League this season with fifteen goals, which signifies exactly why Spurs should attempt to sign him in the summer.

However, the Southampton man may think twice this time before making another hefty career move.

The 27-year-old is enjoying his highest goal scoring season in the Premier League and he should not interrupt his form with a move away anytime soon.

The last time Ings moved to a big Premier League club from Burnley to Liverpool it did not prove to be a success, and the Englishman could be in danger of tarnishing his career yet again if he forces a move away from the Saints.

Luka Jovic

The highly-rated Luka Jovic has failed to impress Zinedine Zidane since arriving from Eintracht Frankfurt in June.

The man that was tipped to become one of the best strikers in European football has only scored two goals in 15 La Liga appearances this season.

Despite failing at Madrid so far, Jovic is only 22 years old and showcased his goal scoring capabilities at Frankfurtwith 27 goals last season. The Serbian has previously admitted that his style of play is better suited to the Bundesliga or the Premier League, so Spurs could be the perfect fit.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho reportedly held discussions with Madrid president Florentino Perez over a potential move in January, however, the north London club were only looking for a loan deal to replace Harry Kane as a quick fix.

With the summer transfer window looming,Daniel Levy should consider a permanent move.

Artem Dzyuba

The Russian striker emerged as a transfer target in the late stages of the January transfer window. Dzyuba admitted that Spurs made contact over a potential move but the Russian club blocked Tottenham’s offer as they weren’t willing to sell in the New Year.

The Zenit St Petersburg forward has been prolific in front of goal this season and has contributed to 33 goals in 41 games – scoring 23 and assisting 10.

Statisticsindicate that Dzyuba would be a suitable option should Harry Kane continue to suffer with long-term injuries.

The 31-year-old has a similar style of play to Harry Kane, a strong, physical striker who likes to hold the ball up, which suggests he would be the most suitable forward to play second fiddle to the Spurs talisman.

The club could return for Dzyuba in the summer, who would be available on a free transfer if he sees out his contract.

This could be an ideal signing for Daniel Levy who certainly enjoys a bargain.

Dan Walker reveals his love for Sheffield Wednesday

Dan Walker is a familiar face when it comes to the BBC’s football coverage, and Sheffield Wednesday fans may enjoy shows like Football Focus a little bit more after the presenter’s revelation. He has made no secret of the fact that he supports League Two Crawley Town in the past, but after another weekend in which the Owls lost he shared the fact that he has a soft spot for the club. His connection comes from his frequent visits to Hillsborough during his student days, and he was happy to admit that his fondness for the club grew because of that in response to a question on Twitter.

He also revealed that Chris Waddle is amongst his favourite ever footballers, which suggests he started watching Wednesday in the early 1990s.

That period was also a much more enjoyable one at Hillsborough than the present day, as the Owls were playing in the Premier League and reaching the latter stages of cup competitions, rather than losing 5-0 to Brentford as they did at the weekend.

Walker often keeps quiet his connection to the club but he may have to express his feelings if Wednesday continue their slide towards the relegation zone.

Man Utd starlet Brandon Williams had a nightmare

One of the break-through stars of the season for Manchester United, Brandon Williams has enjoyed a meteoric rise since taking his first steps into the starting line-up.

The 19-year-old has now made 25 appearances for the senior side this season, and has shown his versatility too, by playing at both left-back and left wing-back.

But as is to be expected with young players, a rough patch of form or a particularly disappointing display will always be on the horizon. And against Manchester City on Sunday afternoon, Williams had his first real shaky moment in a United shirt.

Watch Manchester United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

As per Sofascore, his 6.5 match rating was the lowest of any player on the pitch, and there were certainly multiple reasons why. Despite operating in that wing-back role, Williams managed no efforts on goal, attempted just one dribble, and provided only one accurate cross.

And aside from his lack of offensive contributions to the game, he had a particularly difficult game going back towards his own goal. After looking relatively comfortable for a decent chunk of the game, Riyad Mahrez’s introduction for Bernardo Silva completely changed how things panned out for Williams.

The Algerian’s more prolific dribbling skills and directness (he attempted four dribbles in 31 minutes of action), caused Williams major problems. By the end of the game, the United defender had been beaten six times, made no tackles or interceptions, and lost eight of his 11 total duels.

Whilst the Red Devils starlet will no doubt be licking his wounds, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have cause for concern. Of course, a player’s mentality will be key in determining how they bounce back from a poor game, but the United boss will be wary of whether someone as young as Williams can shake off what happened on Sunday.

One particular moment saw Mahrez drop Williams to the floor with a dummy, twist him inside out after he got back up, and then saw his wicked delivery flash past everyone in the six-yard area. Potentially taking him out of the firing line for a week, and letting him switch for a moment, could be the key to ensuring he moves on from.

It will be a situation that Solskjaer will surely be monitoring over the course of these coming days in training.

Meanwhile, this Man Utd ace is still incredibly frustrating.

3 reasons why Spurs must not sign Willian

Jose Mourinho’s time at Tottenham has already been mixed.

After he replaced Mauricio Pochettino, the man who led Spurs to a Champions League final, the 56-year-old settled in quickly, winning five of his first seven matches. However, he has failed to triumph in each of his last six matches, which suggests that the new manager bounce has already waned.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

In all fairness to the Portuguese boss, though, he is yet to have the chance to really put a stamp on this side since joining – he has only had the January transfer window to bring anyone in, which saw Steven Bergwijn and Gedson Fernandes arrive – meaning that his first real opportunity to do so will be this summer.

As per The Telegraph, one potential new recruit could be Willian. The Chelsea winger – who played under Mourinho during his second spell at Stamford Bridge – is out of contract in the summer, and Spurs are one of the sides interested.

However, there are several reasons why Tottenham and Daniel Levy must avoid this move.

Here, we take a look at three of them…

Age

As it stands, Spurs are already one of the oldest squads in the Premier League – only seven sides are, on average, older than their 26.4 years. Bringing in Willian, though, would only increase that.

The Brazil international is already 31 and will be 32 at the start of the next campaign.

So far, he has not really struggled with injuries, but that is only going to become increasingly more likely as he progresses into his twilight years. It would be a risk to bring him to the club, as such.

Wage structure

Despite being a regular Champions League competitor, Spurs do not spend as much on wages as six other clubs in the Premier League. The $4.95m (£4.1m) earned per year by the average Tottenham Hotspur player is lower than at Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and even Everton.

At Stamford Bridge, Willian earns £120,000 a week. For context, that would see him become the fourth-highest paid player at Tottenham, becoming only the fourth player to earn more than £100,000 a week in the process. Star names such as Hugo Lloris and Dele Alli would earn less – it would be a massive amount of money to spend on a player approaching the end of his playing days.

Steven Bergwijn

Bergwijn was one of two players to join Tottenham in January, making the switch from PSV for £27m. He has already made an impact at the club, scoring on his debut against Manchester City – all in all, he has two strikes in five games so far.

A left-winger, he will likely have to move more regularly to the right in the long-term when Son Heung-min returns from injury – after all, the Netherlands international has played 61 games there according to Transfermarkt.

However, Willian’s arrival would, at the very least, see his playing time reduced, and it could even see him have to play a secondary role. That is not what he will have been expecting when he made the move from the Eredivisie.

West Ham defender Issa Diop has proved David Moyes right this season

Issa Diop has been continually linked with a move away from West Ham United.

On the chalkboard

First it was Manchester United who were said to be interested, now it is Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, with a £60m fee mooted.

But is the Frenchman, who cost the Hammers a then-club record £22m, really worth it?

Per WhoScored, he has made 23 Premier League appearances this season, and on the face of it his defensive contribution has been acceptable.

He has averaged one tackle per game, 1.7 interceptions, one foul – rather cancelling out the tackles – 5.3 clearances, and 0.8 blocks. He is dribbled past 0.3 times and has won 2.7 aerial duels per game.

He has also scored three goals and received eight yellow cards.

Did he really play for us?! No West Ham fan has managed to name all of these obscure Irons signings….

Manager David Moyes, though, sounded a note of caution over his progress earlier this season.

Speaking after a 1-1 draw with Everton in January, he said, per Football.London: “If you ask me, he still has development to do as a young centre half, he has a long way to go.

“But I am looking forward to working with him over the next couple of years.”

It should be remembered that Diop is only 23, despite the figures being thrown around, and any move would come at an early stage in his career.

Not there yet

While WhoScored’s stats paint a picture, it must be said that Diop isn’t quite at the top level yet.

Since the clash with Everton, he has played seven games. West Ham have conceded 16 goals in that time, with Diop unable to stop the flow.

Add into that the fact that he has a tackle success rate of just 54%, per the Premier League, and it becomes clear there are some weaknesses to address. Diop also has a passing accuracy of just 78.8% – Arsenal’s average is 84% for their players.

The Gunners, per the aforementioned Metro report, are said to be looking for a player who is good in one-on-one situations; Diop’s tackle success rate proves that is not his strong point. To emphasise that, Shkodran Mustafi has a tackle success rate of 73%.

He has also been benched four times this season and was excluded from the squad for games against Chelsea and Wolves in November and December respectively. Moyes and his predecessor, Manuel Pellegrini, clearly aren’t entirely convinced.

It should be clear, then, that the ex-Sunderland boss is right; Diop has some developing to do, especially before he is worth £60m.

Meanwhile, West Ham have a clear plan for the summer!

Spurs fans react amid Milan’s interest in Hugo Lloris

It’s fair to say Hugo Lloris hasn’t enjoyed the greatest of seasons at Tottenham this year.

The Frenchman has had his fair share of howlers in the past couple of campaigns in north London, and this season has been no different.

His clanger away at Brighton saw him gift the Seagulls a goal and also injure himself in the process too, and now, reports claim that he could be set for a departure after several years at the club.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

According to Italian publication Calciomercato, Serie A giants Milan are interested in signing Lloris as they view him as a potential replacement for current number one Gianluigi Donnarumma.

After hearing about the potential exit links regarding Lloris, Spurs fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation.

A couple of supporters of the north London side acknowledged that he has been a great player for the club, but that the time is right for him to move on.

Another couple of Spurs fans perhaps rather optimistically claimed that Donnarumma would come to north London in return for Lloris joining Milan.

With a total of 316 games under his belt for Spurs, there can be no question that Lloris has proven himself to be an impressive servant for the north Londoners.

But with him turning 34 later this year, and the howlers becoming all the more frequent, the time does feel right for the Lilywhites to cash in on the man they signed from French side Lyon all those years ago.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans react to an update on their chase for this left-back.
