Mamadou Sakho had a strange final season in red, but the club finalised a very smart sale on the Frenchman.

Sakho left Liverpool to start his new journey at Crystal Palace after being indefinitely dropped by Jurgen Klopp. The Frenchman was sent out on loan in January 2017 until the end of the campaign, before joining permanently in a £26million deal.

Liverpool originally acquired Sakho from Paris Saint Germain in 2013 and he quickly became a regular feature in the starting lineup. But like many other players Klopp inherited from Brendan Rodgers, the centre-back was eventually shown the door.

The 30-year-old made 80 appearances for the Reds and during the 2015/16 season, Sakho averaged a better pass accuracy (87.9%) than Martin Skrtel (85.3%), Dejan Lovren (84.6%), Alberto Moreno (81.3%) and Nathaniel Clyne (78.6%). But despite his strong performances across the backline, the centre-half was completely dropped from the senior squad until he eventually made his move down to London.

Sakho was controversially handed a ban after it was revealed he was using a fat-burning substance following a failed doping test. His relationship with Klopp also became seriously strained after several counts of lateness and ‘lack of respect’.

The Frenchman is now valued at just £10.8m, more than £15m less than what Liverpool offloaded him for three years ago. He has also struggled to find game time this season – featuring in just eight matches.

It appears Roy Hodgson now prefers the combination of almost any other centre-back pairing, likely due to the eight goals Palace conceded and the red card picked up by Sakho in the six games he has started this campaign.

Could a move away from Selhurst Park be coming for the 30-year-old? If so, Palace will find it difficult to make back what they paid for him in 2017. Liverpool, on the other hand, will be rubbing their hands together over another Michael Edwards masterclass.

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked to every man and his dog since the Premier League halted action ahead of what should, no doubt, be a relatively busy summer for Jose Mourinho as he’ll be looking to build his own squad of players.

The 28-year-old has played a bit-part role for Thomas Tuchel in the French capital this season despite racking up 27 appearances in all competitions, only 16 of those have come in Ligue 1, per Transfermarkt.

Meunier is entering the final few months of his contract having been at PSG since 2016, so would be available for a free transfer ahead of next season.

At the messy Rodney Parade at Newport, a new hero emerged at Manchester City.

Phil Foden didn’t care about the poor conditions or risky pitch. He just wanted to show his abilities and did so with an impact by scoring a brace, including two powerful finishes that were far from “easy”.

However, Foden’s energy and drive in a muddy Newport pitch was admirable. He roamed around all over for the Citizens, maintaining a 91% passing accuracy whilst succeeding both his dribbles (stats via Fotmob). If not anything, he proved it’s high time Pep Guardiola uses him more often.

While Foden’s work in Cup competitions- where he’s started almost regularly- has been impressive, it’s in the Premier League he wants to make his mark. With City’s midfielders getting fatigued due to the frequency of games, Foden should be used more often in a central position by Guardiola.

He’s proved how he can not only create chances and go forward with the ball but also fulfil his defensive duties. Foden understood his manager’s complex system over the last year and is ready to be unleashed. Playing him more often in the business end of the season- where City aim to compete for all possible competitions- is a necessity.

Foden brings unpredictability, flair along with that killer instinct to City’s fray. The Citizens should take a leaf out their neighbours book and give one of their own the spotlight now that he’s blossomed into a complete attacker.

The signing of a new contract is typically greeted with unanimous enthusiasm and a feeling of assurance regarding a player’s long-term future.

Alderweireld’s decision to pen terms on a new deal shortly after the turn of the year, though, provided a rather antithetical feeling: one defined by insecurity and apprehension over his future in north London.

The inclusion of a £25 million release clause this summer, which will be active until the final two weeks of the transfer window, represents daylight robbery for a player of his quality and experience.

With that in mind, Spurs fans have been wondering whether the Belgium international could be inclined to sign a new deal to deter interest from outside the club, and one fan posed that question to football.london’s Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold on Monday.

The fans asked what it would take for Christian Eriksen and Alderweireld to sign new deals with the club, and his response in regard to the latter pointed towards a summer departure.

‘With Alderweireld it’s a different situation because of that clause in his contract, triggered by the recent extension, which states that he can go for £25m this summer before the final two weeks of the window.

‘For the Belgian it would be a strange move to sign a new deal now when he could have options galore in the summer.’

Alderweireld looking for a new challenge?

As much as it would pain supporters to admit, Gold is spot on his assessment.

At this moment in time the 29-year-old is in an incredibly advantageous position for a player with a genuine desire to leave the club, and his price-tag should draw in a multitude of coveted suitors when the summer window opens for business.

If Alderweireld did not want to weigh up his options and consider other avenues to explore in his career, he would simply sign a new deal without the inclusion of a release clause.

With ‘options galore’ likely to be presented in front of Alderweireld this summer, Pochettino and Tottenham should be preparing for a future without him.

The seeds have been planted for the former Atletico Madrid man to embark on a new challenge this summer.

Leeds United’s title ambitions were dealt a blow on Tuesday night as Marcelo Bielsa’s side slumped to a 1-0 defeat against QPR at Loftus Road.

The Whites had their chances to score, with striker Patrick Bamford and full-back Barry Douglas amongst those guilty of spurning clear opportunities. The defeat has seen Leeds lose the initiative in the title race too, as Norwich City now hold top spot and are two points clear.

Leeds were the dominant side against QPR but couldn’t find any end product. All too often their territory and possession fizzled out into nothing as the killer final pass was lacking. Right-back Luke Ayling was particularly guilty of failing to provide quality going forward.

The 27-year-old defender was consistently let down by his inability to accurately pick out his teammates. The No. 2 should now be taken out of the firing line by Bielsa, who ought to turn to Jamie Shackleton in his place.

Bournemouth’s David Brooks has committed his long-term future to the club, signing a new deal that will ensure the likes of Spurs and Manchester United – both have been linked with a move for the young Welshman – will not be allowed to pick the best of the Cherries.
