With star man Lyle Taylor set to miss two months of the campaign through injury, Charlton must adapt to life without their five-goal striker.

As of now, Lee Bowyer has overseen back-to-back defeats without the Montserrat international in his team, with Tomer Hemed struggling up top alongside Jonathan Leko – the pair have started both games against Birmingham and Wigan, and haven’t had a single shot on target combined.

How does Bowyer currently set up?

So far this term, the 42-year-old has been using a 4-3-1-2 formation with Taylor and Leko together up top, which has since changed to Hemed and Leko after the former was injured while on international duty.

That system merited four wins and two draws from their opening six Championship games, but seeing as the same formation has resulted in two consecutive defeats without Taylor, the 29-year-old’s presence can definitely be seen as a pivotal factor in the success of the tactical approach.

As a result, something probably needs to change.

What can Bowyer do?

The former Newcastle United midfielder recently came out and said that Chuks Aneke – a centre-forward who scored 17 League Two goals last term – was not impressing him as a striker, and he thought he would be better as a No.10 in behind the main forward.

“At the moment Chuks hasn’t really done anything to persuade me he can play up top.

“We tried to put him up there the other day [as a substitute against Birmingham] and he didn’t do so well.”

As a result, Bowyer should opt for Hemed as a lone striker with Aneke in behind him, alongside one of Jonny Williams or Erhun Oztumer, or even the latter pair together.

Some fans were recently unhappy with Leko – one supporter even called for him to be dropped – and he’s managed just one goal this season, so there is no point in sticking with two misfiring centre-forwards.

Indeed, a system with two attacking midfielders supporting one frontman could be a better option – especially if Bowyer commits to using Aneke as a No.10.

Some Charlton fans on Twitter are torn over Josh Cullen’s performance against Swansea on Wednesday night.

The Republic of Ireland international was making his ninth Championship start of the campaign against the Swans, on a night where the Addicks lost 2-1 at The Valley.

Lee Bowyer’s men took an early lead through Jonathan Leko, but were pegged back after goals from Yan Dhanda and Andre Ayew.

Cullen in particular seemed to impress judging by the statistics, making the joint-most amount of key passes out of any player on the field, with three to his name.

The 23-year-old also completed three tackles, drew two fouls and embarked on one dribble – it certainly seems as if the 5 foot 9 midfielder held his own against one of the best sides in the league.

For some reason, however, not every Charlton fan on Twitter thought he played well.

One fan said he was the south Londoners’ best player by a country mile, whereas another thought the on-loan West Ham man wasn’t his usual self.

For Leeds the injuries that engulfed last season are seemingly back. Luke Ayling could be set for his first start for the senior team since returning from injury as he came off the bench in midweek.

The former Arsenal man replaced Tyler Roberts as Leeds favoured a more defensive look for the final quarter at Elland Road. Stepping in for Cooper could be Gaetano Berardi.

Stuart Dallas moved into central midfield and that remains a possibility this weekend. He’s become a key figure in the side and has started every league match this term.

This change is something Bielsa claimed could happen in his press conference on Thursday.

Pablo Hernandez is set to miss out again so Helder Costa should be given another opportunity on the right flank.

Patrick Bamford has gone goalless in his last five outings but received praise from supporters after that win over the Baggies as he impressed with his work rate.

Eddie Nketiah, therefore, will have to wait patiently on the substitutes bench again.

Leeds fans were left angry by the officiating at Millwall last Saturday but they’re now enraged again after the FA revealed their verdict on the events that played out at The Den.

Gaetano Berardi was shown a red card for bringing down striker Tom Bradshaw in the penalty area despite replays showing very minimal contact.

If anything, it looked like a certain dive but despite Berardi’s suspension being rescinded, there has been no retrospective action for Bradshaw.

It was a piece of news that left many supporters absolutely enraged as they took to the comments to describe their feelings.

One asked whether the FA were promoting diving while another called the organisation corrupt.

A further individual said it would be a different story had a Leeds player been the man in question. It was also described as a horribly predictable conclusion.

Berardi’s red card was his seventh in Leeds colours, a statistic that proves just how unreliable he can be. Despite it being overturned, Marcelo Bielsa has a decision on his hands in the centre of defence.

Liam Cooper is currently out for six weeks so a place next to Ben White is available.

Arsene Wenger talked to beIN SPORTS USA (via Daily Star) and has discussed some of the world’s best strikers. And according to the iconic manager, one player from the Real Madrid squad deserves more praise than he’s currently getting.

What did he say?

There are certainly a number of world-class forwards out there.

And while it’s definitely difficult to choose just one player in particular, the former Arsenal manager and one of the all-time greats, Wenger, has urged everyone not to forget about Karim Benzema, Real Madrid’s veteran forward.

Of course, seeing how they’re both French, it isn’t really a surprise that Wenger is a true fan of Los Blancos’ 31-year-old but he makes a compelling argument as to why exactly Benzema should be getting more praise.

Here’s what he said in full:

“I would not forget [Karim] Benzema. He’s been a regular player at Madrid for nine or 10 years now. It’s not my village, it’s Real Madrid. When I watch him play, I’m a fan of how intelligent his game is. The timing and creativity of his pass makes him able to play No.10. And he is good in the air. In the last year, I know Benzema has not had a lot of credit. But if you look at his performances, they are absolutely unbelievable and he deserves credit. Against all the odds, he has shown huge character and made top-quality performances.”

Real Madrid’s hero

Wenger is actually absolutely spot on – Benzema is one of those players that people somehow often forget about and while the attention is always on other people, he keeps performing silently and more importantly, on a consistent basis.

So far this season, there is no doubt – the 31-year-old has been one of Real Madrid’s stand out performers across all competitions.

In the nine games he played for Los Blancos in the 2019/20 campaign, he has already scored a total of six goals and assisted a further two. On the whole, in the 474 games he’s played for the club in total, he has scored 154 goals and assisted a further 88 in the process.

His contribution is definitely something that’s not really discussed enough in general and as far as underrated Real Madrid stars go, Benzema is definitely up there at the very top.

But as Wenger has pointed out – despite the quality and skill he has demonstrated for the last decade or so – he’s rarely given any credit.

Maybe this year, if he can continue this trend and remain one of the more influential figures on and off the pitch for the Galacticos, he will get the recognition he so clearly deserves.

Only time will tell.
