Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray admits that the Championship club might find themselves powerless to prevent a Premier League move for reported Newcastle United target Adam Armstrong.

Mowbray told the Lancashire Telegraph that ‘if, in his stomach, he wants to go play in the Premier League… we’re not really in a position, financially, to stop that’.

TEAMtalk reported in March that Newcastle were intent on bringing Armstrong back to St James’ Park.

Armstrong found Newcastle opportunities limited the first time around

The Magpies academy product left Tyneside for Ewood Park in the summer of 2018 with only 21 appearances under his belt at St James’ Park.

Armstrong was sent out on loan four times before making a permanent exit, but it seems Newcastle are regretting their decision in light of Armstrong’s subsequent exploits in the Championship.

The 24-year-old has netted an excellent 24 goals in 38 appearances in the second tier this season. Having bagged a hat-trick in the 5-2 win over Huddersfield last weekend, after which Mowbray hailed him as “brilliant”, he sits third in the division’s scoring charts, one behind Norwich City’s Teemu Pukki and five back from Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

However, while the Canaries are promoted and the Bees are set for the play-offs, Blackburn are languishing in 15th, making Armstrong’s exploits all the more impressive – and potentially making it harder for them to keep him at Ewood Park.

Newcastle negotiated a 40% sell-on clause with Rovers in 2018, which could be written off as part of the deal.

Transfer Tavern verdict

The £14million-rated Armstrong is more than deserving of a crack at the top flight based on his exploits this season, but he would likely need assurances of consistent first team as otherwise he may fear that his career could stall.

Callum Wilson’s spot is guaranteed whenever he is fit given his impressive goal return, so it may all depend on the manager’s willingness to commit to playing two up front should Armstrong retrace his steps to Newcastle.

This has been a disastrous season for Celtic and, when the Bhoys face their fiercest rivals this weekend, it will be a match with little riding on it.

However, the Green Brigade will surely have a better chance of celebrating a win this team after they were handed a positive injury boost on Friday afternoon.

James Forrest has been missing for a few weeks now with an injury and failed a late fitness test to face Rangers last time out.

However, he is completely fit this time, with the winger now back in training. Speaking in his pre-match press conference, interim boss Kennedy said: “James has trained all week. He’s been good. Mikey’s trained this week so we’ve got a better squad in terms of options going into the game.”

This will represent a massive boost to Celtic’s chances and, despite Rangers’ dominance in 2020/21, it should leave Steven Gerrard a tad wary.

That’s because Forrest is a player who can make magic happen. The Scotland international scored 16 times last season and racked up 22 assists, proving to be a constant thorn in opposition defences.

Forrest has been described as a “big game player” by Frank McAvennie and it’s easy to see why. He has two goals and six assists against the Gers in his career. For context, he has only registered more assists against Motherwell, Aberdeen, Inverness and St Mirren in Scottish football.

He has been a menace against Rangers down the years, and to welcome him back on Sunday will be welcome news for Celtic.

They have lacked a threat like Forrest’s for a considerable period of time. Ryan Christie has only scored one goal in his last 19 league games, for instance, so that would be the most obvious change for Kennedy to make this weekend.

It feels like the long-serving attacker holds the keys to preventing an unbeaten league season for the Gers.

Former Premier League midfielder and Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie has exclusively suggested to Football FanCast in an exclusive interview that Chris Wilder would be a better fit than Eddie Howe for Celtic.

The Glasgow club are yet to appoint a permanent manager following Neil Lennon’s resignation back in February, though Howe is said to be the leading candidate for the post.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, the coaches that the 43-year-old would like to bring with him are still contracted to Bournemouth, complicating things.

As far as alternatives go, however, Hendrie believes Celtic should be looking at Wilder, suggesting the former Sheffield United boss could actually be a better fit than the current frontrunner for the Celtic gig.

Speaking exclusively to FFC about the two managers, the ex-Aston Villa player said:

“I think most Celtic fans, they’d probably go with Eddie Howe I just feel for the football side of things. But I feel for the part and passion and the whole round circumference of Chris Wilder, I’d be looking at him. 

“I feel he’d get the club rocking again – I really do. And I just feel he’s got that temperament and that mentality to do that.”

In terms of managers who are available, Wilder, 53, definitely looks like he could be a good option given what he managed to achieve at Sheffield United.

Under his leadership, the Blades went all the way from League One to the Premier League. Last season, they were quite the success story, finishing in ninth place following their return to English football’s top flight.

What’s the story?

The Japan international currently finds himself on loan at Spanish side SD Eibar, and it appears the Magpies have got the perfect chance to get rid this summer.

According to The Chronicle’s Ryder, Muto has suggested he is open to staying at the La Liga club for next season, and given that his contract at St James’ Park expires in the summer of 2022, this could be the Magpies’ final opportunity to get some money in for him.

Muto scored just once in 17 Premier League appearances during his first season at St James’ Park, and it just didn’t get any better for him after that – in fact, his total record for Newcastle since his arrival is 28 games played, and just two goals scored.

And it was a move that talkSPORT pundit Darren Gough certainly wasn’t a big fan of, saying: “He (Benitez) went and got Muto. I’m no football expert but at the start of the season I thought ‘that could probably turn out to be the worst signing of the season’.

“He’s scored one goal for them, not really settled in well, has he? £9.5m you spend on just someone. Did he bring him in to start or to just come off the bench?”

The £54k-a-week earning Muto has just been a complete and utter disaster for the Magpies, and this summer should see Mike Ashley make a ruthless call and get rid of the Japanese ace.

The striker’s desire to stay at Eibar has given the Tyneside club a chance to sell him and make some money before he is able to leave on a free transfer next year.

A torcida grita seu nome durante a maioria dos jogos em casa. Acredita que falta pouco para se tornar ídolo no clube?

Nem pensamos nisso. Esses jogadores como Rodolfo, Fábio Costa e Rafael fizeram história e tiveram muito tempo de clube. Estou galgando espaço e no segundo ano de Santos ainda. Todo jogador quer ficar marcado. Temos de pensar em bons trabalhos e títulos. O mais importante é isso, carinho da torcida vem com bom trabalho realizado.

O Santos tem a melhor defesa do Brasileiro e você o maior número de defesas. Como avalia isso?

Sempre digo que esse mérito não é só de defensores. Todos se doam, desde o ataque. O adversário sempre vai criar, por isso temos que estar ali para não levar o gol. Jogamos de forma compacta, está difícil entrar no nosso sistema defensivo.

Tem chamado a atenção a sua participação com os pés ao longo dos jogos. Por que tem sido mais exigido com os pés?

É muito característico de treinador, tem quem goste ou não. É fundamental trabalhar bem para no jogo sair certinho. Eu já fazia isso nos treinos, mas é algo que depende da característica do time, jogadores que sabem sair. Desde a base treinadores cobram isso. Para mim não foi difícil.

Apesar de ter goleiros que sabem jogar com os pés, ainda não é muito comum outros times exigirem tanto. Por que é incomum?

Não só no Brasil. Mudou mundialmente. É uma cobrança que está vindo. Vimos o Neuer fazer bem isso. O Guardiola pede. É uma evolução do futebol, não podemos parar no tempo, se vem para melhorar, temos que nos adaptar. Nos aquecimentos da Liga dos Campeões, os goleiros trabalham com os pés também, não é mais só com as mãos.
