Marcus Bent tips Everton to win race for Sander Berge

Marcus Bent has backed Everton to heap more misery on relegated Sheffield United by tempting their club record signing away from Bramall Lane.

The Blades will be back in the Championship next season after a two-year stay in the Premier League.

England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is among those who have been linked with securing a quickfire return to the top flight, while John Lundstram turned down the offer of a new deal in favour of UEFA Champions League football with Scottish Premiership title winners Rangers.

But ex-Everton striker Bent, who also spent time with Sheffield United during his playing career, feels new Toffees boss Rafa Benitez should be working on a deal to bring 6 ft 5 Sander Berge to Goodison Park.

The Norwegian international midfielder joined the Blades in a big-money deal in January 2020 and has gone on to make 29 Premier League appearances.

Arsenal, along with Italian sides Napoli and Atalanta, are also thought to be interested in the 23-year-old but Bent has urged Everton to win the race for his signature.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Bent said: “I watched Sheffield United against Liverpool two seasons ago and they were absolutely brilliant. They played great football.

“I was a little bit distraught and upset that they went down and the season was so disappointing. A lot of the players, fans and people I have spoken to have said the same thing.

“Berge is their record signing and selling him would be a kick in the gut but they have been relegated.

“Everton would take that sort of player because he is hardworking, fast and got good knowledge of the game. It would be a good signing for Everton but a loss for Sheffield United.”

“No começo do ano ataque estava recheado e o meio-campo estava escasso.

Frizzell County Championship Division Two Preview

Derbyshire have a chance to extend their winning run and go top against the men from Northampton

Ed Green08-May-2002Derbyshire v Northamptonshire at DerbyDerbyshire have a chance to extend their winning run and go top against the men from Northampton. After Dominic Cork led them by spectacular example in their first two matches, including a last gasp two-run victory over Durham in the most exciting finish of the season so far, they will hope to overcome the visitors. Both Stephen Stubbings and overseas player Michael Di Venuto have so far impressed with the bat.Northants’ opening game of the season was at Northampton and went true to form for that ground, with well over 1,000 runs scored for the fall of just 13 wickets, Mike Hussey, Mal Loye and Russell Warren all piled on the runs but perhaps of more significance is the fact that both John Blain and the young Carl Greenidge, who moved from Surrey in the winter, bowled with considerable success. Northants are hard pressed to gain results at home – especially early in the season – and must therefore fight hard for away victories if they are to bounce back into Division One.Nottinghamshire v Essex at NottinghamNotts welcome Essex after being steam-rollered at Lords in Gus Fraser’s championship farewell. If they are to pursue promotion they will need to find runs from sources other than Darren Bicknell, but with Chris Read coming in at number eight their batting is capable of greater resiliance. South African born Greg Smith (31) took four wickets as well as scoring 50 in a lost cause against Middlesex.Essex hope to return immediately to the top division, and having replaced one prolific batsman in Stuart Law with another in keeper/batsman Andy Flower, they may well have got a better deal than the ECB, as Andy is clearly flowering while their other stumper Foster is out of action, having been kept from playing by ECB order for the first part of the season. Essex are without the services of promising young seamer Ricky Anderson, and may lack the bowling to knock sides over twice. But they have signed Jon Dakin from Leicestershire and Middlebrook from Yorkshire to back up their veterans and tyros.Worcestershire v Glamorgan at WorcesterWorcestershire, having begun the season well in both competitions, will be hoping to repeat their victory in the B&H match at Cardiff this week. Veteran David Leatherdale, together with Ben Smith and young Stephen Peters, formerly of Essex, have begun the season well with the bat and the bowling of overseas player Andy Bichel has been ably backed up by Kabir Ali and Gareth Batty, another new signing who moved from Surrey over the winter in pursuit of a regular first-team place. Batty, a 24-year-old off-spinning all-rounder from Bradford, impressed for Surrey in his few first-team appearances last season as well as in the seconds.Glamorgan will be hoping that Simon Jones can repeat his career best 6-45, and that overseas player Mark Kasprowicz produces a better return on their investment this match. A side with limited bowling particularly needs its batting to stand firm. What runs they have scored this season have been spread around, although they will be hoping that the ECB don’t notice that their county and B&H batting averages are topped by their 20-year-old England Under-19 wicket-keeper, who ran up a century in defeat at Derby.

Ghodoussi’s Newcastle takeover tweet

Mehrdad Ghodoussi has accused the Premier League of two things in a strong tweet related to the potential takeover of Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Claims background

Mike Ashley has launched two separate claims against the Premier League – the Competition Appeals Tribunal (CAT) lawsuit over the decision-making process in nixing the deal between him and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium; and the arbitration case, which is set to take place this month.

Earlier this week, the Tyneside club released a statement on their official website requesting for the upcoming arbitration process to be made public, but this is only possible if the Premier League also agree to it as otherwise it will remain behind closed doors.

They also claimed in the statement that they have ‘nothing to hide’ in terms of the process, and even suggested that the Premier League should have ‘no reason to be afraid of the public spotlight’, providing that they have acted ‘lawfully and properly’.

Liam Kennedy, a football journalist for The Shields Gazette who has been following the latest takeover developments closely, has also claimed that the league’s attempts to have the CAT case thrown out ‘seem to have failed’, while the push for a private hearing, and more delays, ‘goes on’.

The Latest: Ghodoussi tweets

Ghodoussi, who is the husband of Amanda Staveley, the businesswoman and head of PCP Capital Partners part of the takeover consortium, has since accused the Premier League of ‘delay tactics’ and ‘zero transparency’ in a strongly-worded tweet.

He also pleaded that ‘fans deserve better’ and called for MP and former Sports minister Tracey Crouch to look into their actions.

The Verdict: Premier League should follow suit

The Premier League should really be following suit in terms of calling for the forthcoming arbitration process to be made public, as they too should have ‘nothing to hide’.

It certainly seems suspicious why they would not want it to be public if they were so confident of getting a positive result in the hearing, and it just shows the supreme confidence that Ashley has of the proceedings going in his favour.

Ghodoussi is right – it seems as if the Premier League are using delay tactics, and keeping the arbitration process private certainly does not give the transparency that the Toon Army are craving.

The arbitration case is certainly setting up to be an intriguing one, and a positive result for Ashley could well speed up the takeover process.

Cidermen want Caddick to spend the rest of his career at the County Ground

In the face of speculation regarding the future of Andy Caddick, Somerset have said that they would like the paceman to remain with the club for the rest of his playing career

Richard Walsh31-May-2002In the face of speculation regarding the future of Andy Caddick, Somerset have said that they would like the paceman to remain with the club for the rest of his playing career.Somerset Chief Executive Peter Anderson told me: "I have sat down with Andy Caddick to discuss his future with the club. A lot depends on his international future, and whilst Andy thinks that after the World Cup in 2003 England might look to other fast bowlers, my advice was to keep his ambitions high and seek to play for England well beyond the World Cup.He is a key bowler for England."Andy, who was born in New Zealand to English parents first came to England in the late 1980’s and initially played club cricket for Hampstead in London, before being tempted to look west and sign for Somerset, after which he played for Clevedon during his four year qualifying period. He made his county debut in 1991 and first played for England in 1993.Since then he has become the main strike bowler for the Cidermen and took 105 first class wickets in 1998.However with the advent of central contracts his appearances for the county have been limited to a handful of matches a season, but when he has appeared he has made all the difference. The chief concluded: "From a Somerset perspective we would hope that we would have his services until the end of his career. Andy has always said that he is grateful to the club for giving him his chance in first class cricket. He lives in Somerset, which he likes and both of his children were born in the county, and he wants to end his career here."

MPs to call for public NUFC arbitration

The Premier League are set to be put under more pressure as news emerged involving Newcastle United’s upcoming takeover arbitration case.

The Lowdown: Arbitration calls

Amanda Staveley, who is part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group looking to take over at St James’ Park, has recently spoken to Sky Sports referencing a letter that she wrote urging both the UK government and football regulators to ensure that the arbitration process is made public.

The Tyneside club have also released a statement calling for the same thing, as they are looking to seek some transparency for supporters ahead of the hearing.

The Latest: MP’s involved

As per The Chronicle, Newcastle Central MP Chi Onwurah has also called for the proceedings to be made public in letters sent to Premier League chief executive Richard Masters and Oliver Dowden, the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

Newcastle North MP Catherine McKinnell is also writing to Mr Dowden, while North West Durham MP Richard Holden intends to raise the issue as well.

The Verdict: Make arbitration public

If the Premier League truly have nothing to hide with regards to the forthcoming arbitration case, then they too should be calling for the process to be made public, alongside the St James’ Park club.

That so many local MP’s are now getting involved will only add to the pressure which has already been applied by both Staveley and Newcastle, and it could well make a big difference.

It seems all set up to be a fascinating next few weeks as the arbitration process gets underway.

West Ham fans excited by Traore claim

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have shown their excitement following an update on their transfer plans – and it involves Adama Traore.

Manager David Moyes is on the hunt for new attackers this summer as he seeks to bolster West Ham’s forward options.

The east Londoners are set to compete in the Europa League group stage next season and will be fighting on more fronts, meaning GSB will need to invest and give West Ham a chance to compete.

There have been no shortage of rumours already this window, with another one now emerging courtesy of Football Insider.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-updates/” title=”West Ham updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The outlet says West Ham have now made an enquiry to sign Traore from Wolves and Moyes even has a specific role mapped out.

While Traore isn’t high on Moyes’ transfer wish list, the Scotsman plans to use him in a similar way to Michail Antonio.

An out and out winger, the West Ham manager would deploy him in a more centre-forward role akin to the Irons’ current star striker.

Hammers fans certainly seem to approve of this move for Traore, dropping their excited Twitter verdicts on social media in reply to West Ham Central.
