West Indies level series with 14-run win

A complete team performance from the West Indies ensured a 14-run win against Sri Lanka in the fourth ODI at the Premadasa in Colombo

Cricinfo staff11-Nov-2008
ScorecardA complete team performance from the West Indies ensured a 13-run win against Sri Lanka in the fourth ODI at the Premadasa in Colombo. While Deandra Dottin and Lisa-Ann King batted well to take West Indies to 170 earlier, Kirbyina Alexander and Shanel Daley picked up two wickets apiece to ensure the series stayed alive. An allround performance from captain Shashikala Siriwardene was not enough for Sri Lanka as they failed to take advantage of their 2-1 series lead going into the match.A brisk start by openers Deandra Dottin and Stefanie Taylor may have had Sri Lankan captain Shashikala Siriwardene ruing her decision to put West Indies in to bat after winning the toss. However, having raced to 53 in the 11th over both fell in successive overs. Dottin (34) was caught by Suwini Alwis off Chamari Polgampola, while Taylor (19) was caught and bowled by Chandi Wickramasinghe. The spinners were then introduced in the attack, and Siriwardene struck immediately trapping Charlene Taitt leg-before and Anisa Mohammad was the next to go, lbw to Rose Fernando. It was once again upto their most-successful batsman on the tour, Lisa-Ann King, to repair the damage. But as in the last match, the middle order crumbled even as King held up the other end. A fighting 39 off 43 balls from King, which comprised three fours and two sixes, helped the West Indies clamber to 170. Polgampola was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers, finishing with 3 for 23, while Siriwardene ended up with 2 for 23.Sri Lanka struggled right from the beginning during their reply. They were reduced to 55 for 4 in the 27th over as Daley struck twice to remove Fernando and Sanduni Abeywickrama. However, Siriwardene led from the front with a fluent 46.She put on 70 runs with Wickramasinghe for the fifth wicket as Sri Lanka looked to rebuild. But King had her caught behind with the score on 125, and 10 runs later when Wickramasinghe fell to Alexander, Sri Lanka’s chances of victory looked grim. The lower order failed to put up any resistance as they were shot out for 157.The fifth and final ODI will be played at the same venue on Wednesday.

Mumbai look to stay group leaders

The main target for table-toppers Mumbai, against Punjab at the Brabourne Stadium, will be to finish on top

With their pride dented after they failed to defend the Ranji crown last year, Mumbai started this season with honest intentions of bouncing back. Going into their final league match, things couldn’t have been more positive: with 26 points, Mumbai lead Group A and are the only team in the Super League to have won four matches outright. The main target for them, against Punjab at the Brabourne Stadium, will be to finish at the top. The confidence shows in that they have already announced their starting XI. The favourites are also in a position to experiment: Dhawal Kulkarni, the highest wicket-taker this season, has been rested. Kulkarni has become Mumbai’s strike weapon despite Ajit Agarkar’s presence in the side. Agarkar, who has not had a great season so far, will miss his second game in a row because of a viral fever.Wasim Jaffer felt the challenge for the other fast bowlers was to emulate Kulkarni. “He [Kulkarni] has been exceptional, has been the key to our victories, and it is now for the others to perform,” Jaffer said.Mumbai will continue trying different combinations after having given opportunities to the second string of Kshemal Waingankar, Rahil Shaikh and Ankeet Chavan against Orissa. While Abhishek Nayar, Rajesh Verma, Usman Malvi and Ramesh Powar will come back, Waingankar, Sairaj Bahutule, Vinayak Mane and Sahil Kukreja will be missing.Malvi was benched in the previous round while Verma was unfortunate to miss the campaign, having suffered a freak injury after he slipped in his house just before the tournament started. Powar, who was rested against Orissa, was never in doubt as he has been Mumbai’s premier spinner even as Bahutule has struggled to find form. The selectors opted to give the senior legspinner a break, and young left-arm spinner Chavan another chance. Kukreja will miss his second game this season, having struggled in the first innings of prior matches.Nayar, who has missed the season so far because of dengue, is a key inclusion. His proven abilities with both ball and bat are vital for Mumbai, who still have a few creases to iron out. Their middle order has not been consistent. Amol Muzumdar’s form (an average of 25.44 and two half-centuries in six matches) is a matter of concern, as the inconsistency of Rohit Sharma, who has not done much apart from a century in one session against Rajasthan. Rohit, having played only three matches, has the leeway that Muzumdar doesn’t.With the ball, Mumbai would like to wrap up tails faster than they have been doing so far. “We have had long conversations about our weak points,” Jaffer said. “With Sachin [Tendulkar] and Zaheer [Khan] expected to join from the quarter-finals, the challenge now is for the players to perform and cement their places.”Pankaj Dharmani, Punjab’s captain, conceded that the visitors had only a thin chance of upsetting Mumbai, but Jaffer was not willing to relax. “There is no reason why we should not go flat out. If Gujarat win outright, and we take first-innings [lead] they finish on top, so we need make sure we win,” he said.Jaffer will not mind the absence of Manpreet Gony, though. Gony, who shot to fame during the inaugural IPL, has been forced to sit out because of a shoulder injury. Punjab do not want to risk aggravating the injury to his bowling shoulder, which he picked in the previous game against Hyderabad. “He has a slight tendinosis [muscle pull] in his right shoulder, and even though it is mild he needs to rest it,” said Nikhil NP, Punjab’s physio.Gony, the second-highest wicket-taker (15) for Punjab, could have been influential on a pitch that Dharmani thought was “pace-friendly”. The responsibility now lies with their best bowler, Gagandeep Singh (19 wickets), who is likely to be supported by Siddarth Kaul and Amanpreet Singh, with Sarabjit Ladda being the main spinner. Ladda, who took a career-best 9 for 111 against Hyderabad last week, turned the match on its head to help Punjab register their second victory.Punjab have never managed to scale the heights they achieved under the guidance of Inthikab Alam, the Pakistan legend, who was their coach in 2004-05 and 2005-06. They reached the final in 2004-05, but later suffered a huge loss when many established players defected to the ICL. Dharmani admitted it was a developing squad, and his only message to the team was that they had a mountain to climb. “Mumbai are the team to beat, and so they need to rise to the occasion.”Teams
Mumbai: Wasim Jaffer (capt.), Ajinkya Rahane, Amol Muzumdar, Rohit Sharma, Abhishek Nayar, Ramesh Powar, Vinayak Samant (wk), Ankeet Chavan, Usman Malvi, Rajesh Verma, and Rahil Shaikh.
Punjab (probable): Pankaj Dharmani (capt.), Sunny Sohal, Karan Goel, Ravi Inder Singh, Uday Kaul (wk), Ankur Kakkar, Varun Khanna, Gagandeep Singh, Siddharth Kaul, Sarabjit Ladda, and Amanpreet Singh

Phillips reacts as West Ham eye Lingard

Speaking to Football Insider, Sky Sports pundit Kevin Phillips has reacted to the latest news involving West Ham United and their links with Jesse Lingard.

The Lowdown: West Ham eyeing Lingard…

As per recent developments, it appears that the Irons aren’t quite done with the Manchester United midfielder yet despite the signing of Croatia international Nikola Vlasic on transfer deadline day.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-2/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, The Evening Standard first reported that manager David Moyes has been considering a return for the England international in January, while Football Insider indicated that potential Hammers transfer talks are ongoing with Lingard’s entourage.

Phillips has now reacted to the latter development and refuses to rule out a West Ham move for the 28-year-old in January.

The Latest: Phillips reacts…

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Sunderland striker believes it is ‘clear’ that Lingard must leave Old Trafford, but suggested that West Ham may not be the only club vying to sign him.

“It’s still a no brainer,” Phillips explained.

“We all know his game time will be limited at Old Trafford and I don’t think he’ll sign a new deal. He will probably let his contract run down and he could go in January or wait for West Ham in the summer.

“Then he can demand even more wages and plenty of clubs can one-up each other then. So that might be the best move for him.

“Once it gets to January there will be other clubs interested, I’m sure. I wouldn’t say the writing is on the wall but it’s clear it’s time for Lingard to move on. He would still be a massive signing for Moyes.”

The Verdict: Wait till next year?

The 28-year-old’s deal, which expires in 2022, should be a huge motivator for Moyes and West Ham to enter formal negotiations in January.

They could snap him up on a free transfer next summer, potentially too big of an opportunity to miss despite their recent signing of Vlasic.

Lingard has been in brilliant form when given the chance for both club and country so far this season, scoring for the Red Devils this weekend as they put Newcastle to the sword (BBC) just a few days after his brace for England against Andorra (BBC).

His phenomenal loan spell at the London Stadium over 2020/21 is another incentive for West Ham, with the only downside arguably being his age and possible wage demands – he currently earns £75,000 per week.

No momento, espera continuar recebendo oportunidades.

Pietersen says he was forced to quit

Kevin Pietersen has said that he was forced to resign as England captain by the ECB and had not been given any explanation as to why he was asked to stand down

Kevin Pietersen has said that he was forced to resign as England captain by the ECB and had not been given any explanation as to why he was asked to stand down. He said he was informed of the ECB’s decision while he was on holiday by a brief phone call from Hugh Morris, the managing director of England cricket, and that a subsequent email from the board confirmed the end of his tenure as captain.”He [Morris] said they [ECB] had had an emergency board meeting and they had accepted my resignation,” he told the . “I said: ‘Excuse me?!’ They said: ‘We’ve accepted your resignation.’ I said on what basis has it been accepted? They had no answer. Next, I received an email from the ECB saying: ‘Your resignation is of immediate effect’.”The crisis started when Pietersen informed the ECB on New Year’s Eve that he could not take the team forward if Peter Moores remained the coach. Before heading out on his African holiday, he had sent a mail detailing his strategies for England’s upcoming series, against West Indies, and also for the Ashes.Moores was sacked the day Pietersen was asked to step down as captain but Pietersen was initially unaware of that. He said he was even more puzzled at losing his job after Moores was removed. “I was surprised because after that phone call I thought Moores was still in the job, with them taking my resignation because of the strategy I had drawn up and my conclusion. So when they got rid of Moores I did ask the question — but got absolutely nothing.”Pietersen had been captain for only five months, taking over last August after Michael Vaughan’s tearful resignation. He said it was crushing to lose the job but stressed that he would have no trouble playing under new captain Andrew Strauss. “The ECB asked me about my availability and I was like ‘excuse me?’ I thought it was a threat against me but I said I will be 100% committed to winning games of cricket for England.”He said all his actions were taken in the interests on England cricket and felt he had “unfinished business” as captain. “But right now, I feel it is right for me to go back and just play – to do something that I totally, totally love, which is scoring runs and more runs for England.”Media reports have suggested that several senior members of the side, including Andrew Flintoff, were unhappy with his methods but Pietersen denied any rift with them. “I’ve got zero problem with walking back into that dressing- room. I can look anybody in the eye.”My relationship with Freddie was great and towards the end I sat down with him and I said: ‘Mate, this is what is going on.’ I explained about the meetings I’d had with the management over the situation with the coach. We had a good chat and Freddie’s parting words were: ‘You cannot leave as England captain.'”Pietersen also said that Flintoff and three other senior members of the side – Strauss, Steve Harmison, and Paul Collingwood – to whom he had spoken about his difficulties with Moores had all asked him to stay on as captain. “And they all – 100%, I promise you categorically – said to me: ‘Do not leave, please, as England captain’,'” he said. “That’s not to say they wanted Peter Moores sacked.”He was distressed at being portrayed as “the most hated man in cricket” by the media after plunging England cricket into turmoil by asking for the coach’s removal, but was gratified by the “loads of messages of support from within and from outside the game”.
