Hammers fans buzzing with U23s winner

Many West Ham United supporters have been left drooling over Armstrong Okoflex after the prodigious talent scored the winner against Ipswich Town in the EFL Trophy.

Okoflex, 19, joined the club on a two-year deal from Scottish Premiership side Celtic, where he made two senior appearances last season after impressing on trial at the Academy of Football.

He made an instant impact on the West Ham under-23s with a hat-trick on his debut against Arsenal in a 6-1 win.

The young Hammers travelled to Portman Road looking to get off to a winning start in the EFL Trophy this week, but were immediately behind after only two minutes when James Norwood scored to put the League One side ahead.

Keenan Appiah-Forson levelled the scoring 12 minutes in though, before Okoflex tucked a penalty away in the 89th minute to hand the Hammers the win against the struggling Tractor Boys.

Liverpool linked to Kingsley Coman

Liverpool were recently linked with a move for Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman and the player could be available for a transfer at the end of the season if the opinion of a former Bayern official is correct.

What’s the story?

The Reds were one of several sides believed to be keen on securing the highly-rated 25-year-old’s services over the summer, but he ended up staying put due to his £86 million price tag despite the extensive speculation.

Now though, in an interview with German outlet BILD TV (as relayed by The Mirror), Bayern’s ex-sporting director Christian Nerlinger was asked about Coman’s future as he continues to be linked with a move away from Bavaria.

“I don’t think he will stay in Munich. Bayern had a recent tendency to lose players for free,” Nerlinger stated.

“But you can’t do that in the long run; you have to sell players from time to time if the offer is right. Coman is an excellent player, but given the situation, I think Bayern will consider selling him.”

Coman’s current contract expires in the summer of 2023, meaning Die Roten may only have the next two transfer windows to secure a substantial fee for the forward’s services.

Fans would be buzzing

The France international is set to be out until October, after making just four appearances this season, due to discovering a minor cardiac arrhythmia, which had seen him struggle with shortness of breath.

“‘King’ had an operation yesterday, he had a minor heart rhythm disturbance. I’ll explain that with my little medical expertise,” Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann revealed at a press conference on Saturday:

“There are two strands that activate the sinus node. One of them was cut off so that there would be no additional blow. Sometimes he had less air for a short time and was less productive.

“That’s why we did a long-term ECG (electrocardiogram) and found something that could be fixed quickly,” the young tactician explained.

It’s a potentially concerning setback for Coman, but the skilful forward has already achieved so much in his career. Despite being just 25, he has already won 24 major trophies in his career, including the Champions League, and was lauded by his youth coaches from an early age.

“His reading of the game and his technique stand out and make him formidable,” claimed France’s Under-17 coach Patrick Gonfalone back in 2012, when Coman was just 16.

Liverpool supporters would likely be buzzing if their club could secure a deal for Coman.

The Reds do seem a bit short of attacking options following the departure of Xherdan Shaqiri, and Klopp’s charges lack the strength in depth of their domestic rivals.

Coman’s arrival at Anfield would change that, though, and he could provide the necessary spark for Liverpool to return to the Premier League summit.

ICL on agenda at ICC meeting

The ICC’s board meets in Perth on Saturday with the key item on its agenda being an application for recognition from the ICL

The ICC’s board meets in Perth on Saturday with the key item on its agenda being an application for recognition from the ICL. However, the issue is unlikely to reach a resolution over the weekend; it is learnt the BCCI will once again dig in its heels and continue to back a ban on the unauthorised Twenty20 venture. The board members will also discuss preparations for the Champions Trophy to be held in September, an internal report on Zimbabwe and international fixtures after 2012.The ICL issue, however, may not dominate discussions as previously expected, considering the BCCI’s hardline position. “Our position on ICL remains the same,” a top BCCI official told Cricinfo. “We see no reason for that to change.”Debate over the ICL gathered pace this week after the Pakistan Cricket Board received a legal notice against a domestic ban it had imposed on players associated with the private league. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had, under the previous administration last year, allowed five of its ICL-linked players to participate in a domestic tournament. The ICL’s request for recognition is based on an ICC rule that allows matches of an ‘exhibition/testimonial’ nature to be granted approval directly by the world body. However, the BCCI and other national boards are firm that such permission cannot be granted in this case without the home board’s approval. The ICC subsequently formed a five-member working group to study the rules that govern official and unofficial cricket. This group, including Shashank Manohar, the BCCI president, Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, and Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, has since prepared a set of draft regulations that includes stricter norms, especially on unofficial cricket. The ICC board members will also discuss the way forward for international cricket after the current Future Tours Programme (FTP) gets over in three years. India and England have already opposed a proposal from Australia that the FTP be replaced by a Test Championship.Preparations for the Champions Trophy this year will be the other key subject of discussion over the weekend. The tournament is scheduled to be held from September 24 to October 5 in Pakistan, subject to a security clearance. The event was originally scheduled to be held last year in the same country but was postponed after ICC members expressed concerns about the then security situation there. The executive will also consider a report from an ICC panel, headed by Julian Hunte, the West Indies cricket board chief, on Zimbabwe following his visit last November which was conducted against the background of the cholera outbreak and the continuing breakdown of the economy. Peter Chingoka, the Zimbabwe Cricket chairman, won’t be at the meeting after he refused to apply for a visa to enter Australia.

Entretanto, apenas Alex Silva está no time titular.

Newcastle must drop Ciaran Clark v Wolves

With no wins to start off the new Premier League season, Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce is under increasing pressure to deliver some much-needed results as his side make the trip to face Wolves on Saturday afternoon.

The Magpies remain winless after their opening six games and find themselves just outside of the relegation places by virtue of a superior goal difference to Leeds.

The defence has once again been a major issue of concern for Bruce, with the Tyneside club’s tally of 14 goals conceded better only than bottom club Norwich in the entire division.

A shake-up at the back could be exactly what’s needed, and the Newcastle boss could start that by dropping Ciaran Clark.

The Republic of Ireland international has been a mainstay of the Magpies’ defence for the start of this new season, whether it’s featuring in a back three or a back four.

Just like the rest of his teammates, though, the 32-year-old has really struggled, and was particularly disappointing in the defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford a couple of weeks ago. As per Sofascore, he lost both of the duels in which he was involved that day, made no tackles whatsoever and was dribbled past once as Cristiano Ronaldo and co ran riot in the second half.

Writing for The Shields Gazette and The Chronicle respectively, both Miles Starforth and Lee Ryder were critical of Clark’s second half performance in particular, giving him a measly five and four in their post-match player ratings.

With Fabian Schar waiting in the wings for his opportunity to start, Bruce could inject a bit of fresh energy by dropping one of the players in whom he seems to surprisingly put his trust every week.

While Clark has hardly been the sole reason as to why Newcastle’s defence has been very leaky to start the new campaign, his shakiness at the back isn’t what’s needed at the moment – in fact, his average match rating this season of 6.34, as per WhoScored, is only the 12th best of any Newcastle player.

The £35k-a-week ace simply has to be dropped today, as he has been decidedly poor in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has dropped a promising Newcastle United takeover update…

Assim, Carille poderá escalar a força máxima do Timão contra o Avaí.

Os titulares treinaram assim: Cássio; Fagner, Balbuena, Pablo e Guilherme Arana; Gabriel e Maycon; Jadson, Rodriguinho e Romero; Jô, enquanto os reservas tiveram a seguinte escalação:Walter; Paulo Roberto, Pedro Henrique, Léo Santos e Moisés; Fellipe Bastos e Giovanni Augusto; Marquinhos Gabriel, Pedrinho e Clayson; Kazim.

Jhulan Goswami, the India women’s captain, believes the team’s recent experience of touring Australia will be of help when they return to contest the World Cup in March. India were thrashed 5-0 by Australia in a one-day series last year, a result that took their run of losses to nine. They have not played international cricket since.”We felt bad. After all, we are representing our country,” Goswami told the . “On the plus side, we now know about the wickets and conditions in Sydney, where we will play our World Cup matches.”On the dismal tour of Australia, India got the chance to play at two grounds that will host World Cup games – the Manuka Oval in Canberra and one at the North Sydney Oval.Things haven’t gone India’s way since winning the Asia Cup last year and the batting has been a major area of concern. The squad for the World Cup includes three new faces – Poonam Raut, Harmanpreet Kaur and Sravanthi Naidu. “Poonam is an opener who did well in the inter-state one-dayers, in December. Harmanpreet is a young allrounder who has done well in domestic cricket. Sravanthi bowls left-arm orthodox and came up with big performances against big teams in the national meet,” said Goswami.India, who were losing finalists in the 2005 World Cup in South Africa, had a camp at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore in January and will have another in Mumbai from February 19-28 before leaving for Australia on March 1.
