Masi drops fresh West Brom transfer claim

West Bromwich Albion have lodged a complaint to FIFA regarding an unpaid transfer fee.

What’s the latest?

In a recent report for the Express & Star, Joseph Masi revealed that West Brom are yet to receive the full transfer fee for the £2.5m sale of centre-back Ahmed Hegazi, who joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad Jeddah this summer.

Masi added that, despite it being unknown exactly how much of the fee remains outstanding, Al-Ittihad have disputed the figure, something which has led to the Baggies raising the issue with FIFA in order to find a resolution.

Finally, it is said that West Brom hope to receive an answer from the governing body this week, which could lead to Valerien Ismael receiving an injection of cash ahead of the January transfer window.

Fans will be buzzing

The situation surrounding Hegazi’s unpaid transfer fee is obviously far from ideal for West Brom, but should FIFA decree that Al-Ittihad owe them a significant fee for the defender, and this fee is paid ahead of the winter market, there would appear to be a rather significant silver lining for Ismael.

Indeed, with the 46-year-old recently stating that he is already working towards a number of deals in January, the potential of receiving a substantial amount of money prior to the transfer window’s opening would undoubtedly come as a major boost for the Frenchman, who would certainly welcome an injection of cash in order to rejuvenate his squad.

With West Brom already involved in what looks to be a fiercely-contested race for a top two finish this season, the possibility of having slightly more money to spend this winter could well make all the difference in the Championship standings come next May, while the potential of bringing in a fresh face or two is also sure to have The Hawthorns faithful buzzing.

USA boost play-off chances with big win

A round-up of the matches on day four of the Americas women’s championship 2009

The USA did well to recover from their loss to Canada the previous day to put in a strong performance against Argentina in the second match of the Americas women’s championship triangular in Fort Lauderdale. The convincing nine-wicket win kept the hosts in the hunt for the title and qualification for the play-off series which would ensure a berth in the Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament. The margin of victory was the exact opposite of their loss against the same opponents in the Twenty20 section of the event, earlier in the week, and was a fair reflection of a dominant display. The future of the teams now depend on tomorrow’s final game in the triangular, between Canada and Argentina – a Canada win would result in the team successfully defending their regional crown, and going through along with USA to the playoff series to be held later in the year. Victory for Argentina would translate into a three-way tie, with qualification depending on net run-rate.After being asked to bat, Argentina got off to a nervous start, slumping to 11 for 3. However, a spirited fourth-wicket partnership between Dirce Yuli and Catalina Greloni took them to 71 in 21 overs. But the experienced USA bowlers turned on the pressure, and the regular fall of wickets meant Argentina were bowled out for 131 in 38.5 overs.Yuli was far and away the star of the innings, making a outstanding 56 off 80 balls as opener, with four boundaries. Captain Greloni chipped in with 19, but none of the other batsmen reached double figures. Isoline Sutherland was the most successful among the USA bowlers, with 3 for 16 in 8 overs, while Ivy Mahabir picked up 2 for 8.With a USA batting order boasting a top four of former West Indies internationals, early wickets were imperative for Argentina if they wanted to fight their way back into the game. However, the quality and experience of the batting stood firm, and led by Shirley-Ann Bonaparte’s aggressive unbeaten 55, comprising six fours, and 24 not out from Candacy Atkins, USA eventually coasted to victory in the 33rd over.In the other game of the day, minnows Brazil put in a memorable performance even as they went down to the Trinidad & Tobago Development XI by 81 runs. In their first ever official event, the Brazilians have won friends and admirers for their courageous and enthusiastic displays, and this match was no exception. Having bowled out T&T Development XI for 195, the Brazilian batsmen put in a spirited performance to reach 114 for 9 in their 40 overs. For the T&T Development XI, Whitney Cudjoe crafted a fine innings of 79, while Shenelle Lord contributed with 37. Among the bowlers, Davika Singh shone with 4 for 19 while Darian Diaz took 2 for 18. For the Brazilians, Juliana Brito put in an all-round perfromance, picking up 2 for 32 and then top scoring with 23. Carol Moraes bowled excellently to finish with 3 for 27 while Marcia Negreiros took 2 for 25 in 6 overs.Tomorrow’s fixtures at Brian Picollo Park in Cooper City, Broward County, sees the big clash between favourites Canada and Argentina while T&T Development XI take on Bermuda later.

Celtic: Max Stryjek makes Hoops admission

Livingston goalkeeper Max Stryjek has admitted that he would ‘love to play’ at Celtic Park, The Daily Record report.

The Lowdown: Stryjek profiled

The Polish shot-stopper joined Livingston in July 2020 on a free transfer from Eastleigh and has since been hailed as ‘brilliant’ and a ‘leader’ by his manager David Martindale.

He has made 45 appearances in Scotland for his current employers, keeping 18 clean sheets, and is on just £1,000 per week.

It seems as if he would be open to the possibility of moving to Parkhead one day after watching the Hoops face Bayer Leverkusen from the stands in the Europa League in recent weeks.

The Latest: Penalty save; Hoops admission

Stryjek was the second-best performer behind Anthony Ralston on the weekend in a 0-0 draw, as per WhoScored.

He saved a Giorgos Giakoumakis penalty in stoppage time to salvage a point for Livingston and was talking to the media, cited by The Daily Record, following the stalemate.

The 25-year-old revealed his Glasgow trip at the end of September, before appearing to drop a transfer hint by admitting that he ‘would love to play’ at Parkhead, saying:

“I have been here with a friend to watch them against Bayer Leverkusen this season and the atmosphere was unbelievable. It was so loud and I was thinking: ‘I would love to play here.’

“And then when I got here I was thinking it was going to be really hard with 60,000 supporters shouting and singing.

“But as the game started and for the first 30 minutes I realised there was no singing and it was very quiet. “I didn’t know why but then I heard later there was a protest.

“It was a bit weird but then it all started getting very loud after 30 minutes and it was great. I really enjoyed it.

“We play football for days like these. How can you not enjoy playing in a beautiful stadium like this with 60,000 people watching you play.

“What can be better for a footballer?”

The Verdict: One to keep an eye on?

Joe Hart is Celtic’s number one at this moment in time, but he will turn 35 in April, so the Hoops may want to look at their goalkeeping options beyond the Englishman.

They have Conor Hazard coming through, but he’s been sitting on the sidelines at Parkhead and has made just eight appearances for the club. Meanwhile, Stryjek has already kept two clean sheets against Ange Postecoglou’s side and outperformed Hart on the weekend.

He is nine years Hart’s junior and has put in two impressive performances against Celtic already, so it could be worth keeping a close eye on his development over the coming years.

Science v art in clash of cultures

It’s first a clash of ethos, of philosophies and even of time, more than a semi-final

The Preview by Osman Samiuddin17-Jun-2009Match factsThursday June 18
Start time 1730 local (1630 GMT)The batting needs the likes of Shoaib Malik to really get his show going•Getty Images

Big PictureIt’s first a clash of ethos, of philosophies and even of time, more than a semi-final. Here is truly man against machine, the art of cricket against the science of it, cricket’s future and cricket’s past. South Africa’s progress to this point has been smooth, well-planned, calculated and inevitable, as if their players were born to do this. Pakistan have got here in shambles – losing games, winning some, treating it all as a bit of fun – and the players not so much born to do this are struggling to discover why they are doing it at all.South Africa lack nowhere and nothing. If Jacques Kallis and Graeme Smith are the efficient drones at the top, there is heart in the middle, with the ever-frail skills of Herschelle Gibbs and the creativity of AB de Villiers. Even Albie Morkel, in whom there are glimpses of Zulu, thankfully smiles more. They’ve always had pace, but now they even have spinners, who are not batsmen forced to bowl. Sure, they are a little one-dimensional (watching videos of Umar Gul’s yorkers?), but they are spinners – South African and successful; how often have we said that in the past? The whole machinery is intimidating, determined to iron out all kinks, the mission pre-programmed; with seven consecutive wins in this format, they have apparently also taken the inherent unpredictability of this format out of the equation. They are well-trained, well-oiled, and their psychologist talks about 120 contests and of processes over outcomes and how choking is not really an issue anymore. They win even warm-up matches and the dead games because every game counts. They are cricket’s future.Pakistan are the past. They are wholly dysfunctional, but just about getting along, though unsure where they are going. They don’t control their extras, they don’t run the singles hard and they field as if it were still the 60s. They are least bothered about erasing the flaws because any win will be in spite of them. They did hire a psychologist though, and you can only imagine what those sessions were like and how much they actually talked about sport and cricket. There are permanent mutterings of serious rifts. They may not bat, bowl or field well all the time, but sometimes, they do what can only be described as a ‘Pakistan’: that is, they bowl, bat or field spectacularly, briefly, to change the outcome of matches. You cannot plan or account for this as an opponent because Pakistan themselves don’t plan or account for it.It can come from any person, any discipline, but on evidence, it is likelier to come from the bowling. The batting needs Shoaib Malik and Misbah-ul-Haq to really get their show going. A piece of fielding brilliance cannot be discounted, but generally both Pakistan and West Indies have happily disproved the dictum that in T20 cricket you have to be Jonty Rhodes to get anywhere. Heroes will likely be found among the Umar Guls, the spinners and maybe even Mohammad Aamer, who is a throwback to the late 80s and early 90s, when Pakistani fast bowlers were born ready to play international cricket. The pressure on South Africa however, will be greater. They are expected to win this and anyway they will always have the whole ‘chokers’ tag to deal with until the day they actually lift a big trophy. It doesn’t help that they look as good as they did during the 1999 World Cup, though they are easier on the eye. Pakistan, as Younis Khan said before leaving for England, won’t much mind a semi-final spot; Kamran Abbasi rightly noted that they may have had an easier ride to the semis than most but no country has had a rougher two years. Clearly they’d love to win it, but they have already achieved more than many thought and a loss wouldn’t be the end of the world. But importantly, as the only side to make it to the last four in 2007 and 2009, they have underscored their significance in this brave new, T20 world, a world in which they absolutely cannot be ignored.Form guide (last five matches, most recent first)

Watch out for…The whole South African machinery is intimidating – determined to iron out all kinks, the mission pre-programmed•Associated Press

Albie Morkel has been a quiet, steady ever-present through South Africa’s tournament. But he is capable of bigger, more explosive things especially with the bat and this match – and potentially the next – are the best platforms for it.Shahid Afridi’s moment turned the tournament for Pakistan, an outstanding catch hastening New Zealand’s collapse, and possibly himself – at least with the bat. Since then he has batted with rare sense, as everyone has wished him to, and at little expense to his strike rate. He will be a factor with the ball anyway, but if he gets going with the bat, then South Africa will panic.Team newsPakistan have finally settled upon what they feel is their best line-up, more by chance than design. Barring injury, there are unlikely to be any changes.Pakistan: (probable) 1 Shahzaib Hassan, 2 Kamran Akmal (wk), 3 Shoaib Malik, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq, 5 Younis Khan (capt), 6 Abdul Razzaq, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Fawad Alam, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Mohammad Aamer, 11 Saeed AjmalJacques Kallis will come back in for Morne Morkel after being rested for the dead game against India.South Africa: (probable) 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Jacques Kallis, 3 Herschelle Gibbs, 4 AB de Villiers, 5 JP Duminy, 6 A Morkel, 7 M Boucher, 8 Johan Botha, 9 Roelof van der Merwe, 10 Wayne Parnell, 11 Dale SteynPitch and conditionsThe surface for this match is two along from the one that turned square for the South Africa-India match and is expected to be harder and offer less help for the spinners. However, the slow bowlers have had an impact throughout so are still likely to be key. Steady rain arrived in Nottingham on the practice day, but is due to clear overnight and the forecast for Thursday is fine.Stats and TriviaPakistan and South Africa have six bowlers in the top 10 wicket-takers of the tournament, though Pakistanis occupy the top two spots.Three of the top 10 run-scorers of the tournament are from South Africa and Pakistan, with AB de Villiers and Jacques Kallis at numbers two and three.Quotes”Our bowling has been great and all of them are now bowling in rhythm. The batsmen have to support the bowlers if we are to win this cup.”

“”I think we’ve come past that. This team has come a long way and I think we’ve proven that. Hopefully we can show that on Thursday, that’s what is exciting about it. “
“It’s great to be in a position where you can rock up to a ground, look at the wicket and know you have all the bases covered. We aren’t really worried what the wicket will be.”

Celtic: Jordan Larsson linked with Hoops

Celtic and West Ham have been linked with a move for Spartak Moscow forward Jordan Larsson, The Daily Record report.

The Lowdown: Larsson profiled…

Larsson, the son of legendary Celtic striker Henrik Larsson, is 24 years of age and can play on the right-hand side or as an attacking midfielder along with his primary centre-forward role.

The left-footed beast has been hailed as ‘strong’ by retired Sweden international Marcus Allback, who also believes he ‘would suit playing for Celtic’.

He still has 18 months left on his contract in Russia, where he has scored 26 times in 76 appearances, but he has now been linked with a move to Parkhead.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-15/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Hoops links

The Daily Record shared a story on Tuesday afternoon, citing reports from Aftonbladet who claim that the Hoops and the Hammers are two sides tracking Larsson’s situation.

The report claims that Spartak’s previous asking price was around £13m, but that is now expected to be lower in order to get Larsson off the books.

The Verdict: Other areas a priority?

It would be a great story for the son of one of Celtic’s best-ever players to move to Celtic Park, however, at this moment in time, it seems as if other areas of the pitch need adding to first before a big-money move for Larsson should be explored.

Central midfield appears to be an area where reinforcements are needed, with Ange Postecoglou relying heavily on the likes of Callum McGregor, Tom Rogic and David Turnbull this season.

Left-back may also be another position that could do with bolstering, with right-back Josip Juranovic filling in over recent weeks following Greg Taylor’s injury.

In other news: Nicholson may ship out ‘quick’ beast alongside Ajeti in January so Ange can make Celtic signings.
