Pakistan got rid of Sri Lanka’s batting luminaries without too muchtrouble, but found Chamara Kapugedera and Thilan Samaraweera impossible todislodge as the home side eased to a comfortable six-wicket victory and a2-0 lead in the series. The bowlers had done the hard work earlier, dismissing Pakistan in just 47 overs, and Kapugedera’s sixth ODIhalf-century offered a gentle reminder that there’s more to Sri Lanka’sbatting than the big three in the top order. The bowlers, with Thilan Thushara taking 3 for 33, had reduced Pakistan to87 for 7, but two doughty tailend partnerships lifted them to 168.Mohammad Aamer top-scored with 24, but it was extras that was the largestcontributor (26) as Sri Lanka got a little sloppy in the final stages. They didn’t start well with the bat either, and when Mahela Jayawardenepulled Shahid Afridi to short midwicket, the scoreboard showed 74 for 4.With the game in the balance, Kapugedera and Samaraweera batted with greatcomposure and class to see it home. Samaraweera square-drove superbly, while Kapugedera drove and pulled with immense power. One pull off Afridiwent for six, and he then crashed Umar Gul through cover to get to hishalf-century. By the end, it was just a procession.Sanath Jayasuriya had provided the early impetus, blazing away as only hecan, but the loss of two wickets in an over, one of them to a sillyrun-out, pushed Sri Lanka back. There was another fine spell from the17-year-old Aamer, leaving Jayasuriya to target Abdul Razzaq. He was firstflayed over cover, and then two short deliveries were summarily dismissedwith short-arm pulls. Upul Tharanga was far from comfortable though, andwhen Aamer tempted him into a half-hearted drive, Nasir Jamshed held on atslip.Jayasuriya then survived a strong shout for leg-before from Aamer, beforeGul was greeted with a miscued pull for four. With Kumar Sangakkarastruggling though, the run rate dropped, and a moment of madness betweentwo experienced pros gave Pakistan a route back into the game. Jayasuriyapushed one to mid-off and half-set off, but when he stopped, Sangakkarawas still haring down without looking. Two balls later, Jayasuriya carvedone to deep point, where Umar Akmal held his nerve to hold a difficultcatch.Umar had shown glimpses of class with the bat as well, but like several ofhis team-mates, he couldn’t build on a start. Pakistan had made two changesfrom the side that lost by 36 runs two days earlier, but they starteddisastrously. Jamshed, who had come in along with Umar at the expense ofMohammad Yousuf and Misbah-ul-Haq, sparred at a Nuwan Kulasekara deliverythat was moving away from him, and Jayawardene took a smart catch over hishead at second slip.Kamran Akmal eased a couple of lovely drives in front of the wicket, butany thought of consolidation disappeared as two wickets fell with thescore on 21. First, Kamran edged one that slanted across him forSamaraweera to take an excellent tumbling catch at first slip, and thenShoaib Malik was unfortunate to be given out leg-before after being struckhigh on the pad. Two wickets for Thushara, and Sri Lanka right on top.On a green-tinged pitch where the ball darted around, Younis Khan was inall sorts of strife against Lasith Malinga and it was left to Umar tohighlight his potential with a couple of fluent drives on either side ofthe wicket. But soon after drinks, Sri Lanka struck again, with Umarflailing at a wide one from Angelo Mathews. Sangakkara held on to thatchance, and when Thushara came back for a sixth over and had Fawad Alamtop-edging a cut behind, Pakistan were once again facing acute battingembarrassment.Younis found it tough to turn the strike over, facing 73 balls for his 23,and his dismissal was as tame as the innings itself, chipping MuttiahMuralitharan to midwicket. Afridi was held back, but it didn’t prove asuccessful gambit as a big heave off Murali went only as far as deepsquare leg.Razzaq and Gul kept the bowlers at bay for 10 overs without making a bigdent on the scoreboard, but again, Sri Lanka shut off the escape route. This time, it was brilliant fielding, with Malinga Bandara, the substitutefielder, catching Gul short with a direct hit from gully. Razzaq thenslapped Sanath Jayasuriya to long-on, and it was left to Aamer, who showedimpressive commitment once again, and Saeed Ajmal to steer the side past150. Even in bowler-friendly conditions, it was nowhere near enough.

Former South African umpire Wilf Diedricks died early on Tuesday morning after a lengthy illness at the age of 64

Cricinfo staff18-Aug-2009Former South African umpire Wilf Diedricks died early on Tuesday morning after a lengthy illness at the age of 64.Diedricks became a well-known figure in South African cricket as a first-class umpire post-1991. But his contribution to non-racial cricket from the mid-1970s to 1991, both at provincial level in Kwazulu Natal and nationally, was enormous. In the 1969 season, he linked up with Universals Cricket Club in the Durban Districts Cricket Union at Tills Crescent. It was during this time that he began his umpiring career. Diedricks stopped playing just prior to the first attempt at unity in 1976-1977 and together with Krish Mackerdhuj and Sagren Naidoo, joined the umpiring ranks. He helped to establish the Natal Umpires Body which was followed by the SA Cricket Board Umpires Association. Ole could unearth another gem in Shoretire

Manchester United have an illustrious history when it comes to producing world-class homegrown talent, and the next superstar could be set to come off their conveyor belt in the near future.

Shola Shoretire forced himself into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-team plans towards the end of last season, becoming the Red Devils’ seventh youngest player of all time when he made his debut against Newcastle United.

His two-minute cameo in the 3-1 victory over the Magpies back in February 2021 got people excited over the versatile forward’s future, with former United academy graduate Luke Chadwick amongst his admirers.

“He (Shoretire) is a hugely talented player,” said Chadwick. “I watched him play in the youth team as an Under-16 player, he was so clever – fantastic awareness knows how to play on the half-turn, can see a pass as well.

“He’s so sharp in his mind and even if he doesn’t start a lot of matches yet, he can come on in games and make an impact.”

And Shoretire’s taste of senior football didn’t stop there. Solskjaer tipped the 17-year-old for a bright future after he came on against Real Sociedad in the Europa League, becoming United’s youngest-ever player in European competition.

Just four days after his substitute showing versus Newcastle, he broke Norman Whiteside’s record after entering the field of play at just 17 years 23 days old.

“Shola is going to be a good player for us and sometimes you need to test them against good players,” Solskjaer said. “We knew Real Sociedad are a good team with good individuals and they press.

“We felt today Amad (Diallo) – he had to come on, of course, Dan (James) had to come off – and Shola, the two of them will need these little introductions to this type of level.

“He’s a young kid that we believe in. Great attitude. You can see the shape of him. We think physically he’ll be an athlete and technically very, very good. Makes good decisions.”

Shoretire only received one more appearance in the senior setup last term, but it was a deserved reward for a fabulous campaign at youth level, with the England U19 international bagging ten goals and providing five assists in 24 appearances.

The diminutive star is yet to feature in a matchday squad for Solskjaer’s struggling side this term, but he’s carried his eye-catching form into 2021/22 nonetheless.

A total of eight goal contributions in 15 outings has shown the teenager is continuing to develop his skills, and although Amad Diallo for a whopping £19m, it could well be Shoretire who has the brightest future.

Only time will tell if the local lad can make the grade at his boyhood club, but it certainly appears to be a matter of when rather than if he becomes a regular name on Solskjaer’s teamsheet.

Journalist provides update on Nketiah to Palace

Crystal Palace could retain an interest in Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah after their efforts to secure his signature over the summer were rebuffed, according to journalist Tom Barclay.

What’s the story?

The Eagles were first linked with the 22-year-old in the previous transfer window when The Athletic claimed that Palace were willing to pay £10m for the youngster, but a deal couldn’t be agreed between the two clubs as the Gunners were holding out for a £20m fee.

Now though, with the January window fast approaching, Barclay believes the south London outfit could try their luck again as new manager Patrick Vieira looks to add further reinforcements to his forward line.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “There was big interest in Nketiah in the summer, he’s out of contract next summer.

“But he’s 22, which means he’s under 24 so Arsenal would be due some compensation, so it wouldn’t be a free transfer. I wouldn’t be surprised if they retained interest in Nketiah, though.”

Crystal Palace need him

A recent report by TransferMarketWeb claimed the former England U21 international could be available for as little as €12m (£10m) this winter due to his contract situation, a fee that could prove to be an absolute bargain in years to come.

He was dubbed “so incredibly prolific” by football scout Jacek Kulig after a string of impressive performances for Arsenal that has seen him rack up a combined haul of 16 goals and assists. Sadly, Nketiah has found opportunities hard to come by in recent months.

After receiving just 173 minutes of first-team action this term – all coming in the Carabao Cup – Nketiah has made his desire to depart north London known to Mikel Arteta, meaning an imminent exit could be on the cards.

With Christian Beneteke set to turn 31 next month, and loanee Jean-Philippe Mateta expected to return to his parent club early, Vieira and Palace will need extra attacker options over the coming months, and Nketiah could be the ideal solution.

Surrey swoop for Herath

Surrey’s attack has been boosted by the signing of Rangana Herath, the Sri Lanka spinner, who has joined the club until the end of the season

Cricinfo staff01-Sep-2009Surrey’s attack has been boosted by the signing of Rangana Herath, the Sri Lanka spinner, who has joined the club until the end of the season. He will make his debut for Surrey in their Championship clash against Gloucestershire at Bristol tomorrow, three days after his match-winning eight-wicket haul for Sri Lanka in their series-victory over New Zealand. Also set to make his Championship debut is Arun Harinath, 22, who has been rewarded for a series of strong second XI performances by being given the number three slot usually occupied by Mark Ramprakash, who fractured his left thumb in Surrey’s match against Kent last week.Herath, 31, has played 18 Tests for Sri Lanka and joins Surrey on the back of a match winning eight wicket haul in the second Test Match against New Zealand in Colombo, spinning his side to victory with 5 for 139 in the final innings. It is likely that the 22 year old Harinath, a graduate of the Surrey Academy, will bat at three in the side behind openers Jonathan Batty and Michael Brown, who put on 171 for the first wicket in last week’s game against Kent at Canterbury.Stuart Meaker is also expected to retain his place, while Alex Tudor has been added to the squad following impressive form for Surrey seconds.

Early West Ham team news v Rapid Wien

West Ham United have taken several academy youngsters to Austria for their Europa League clash with Rapid Wien this evening…

What’s the word?

That’s according to football.london’s reliable Irons reporter Tom Clark, the likes of central defensive duo Jamal Baptiste and Aji Alese, recent debutant Dan Chesters and young goal machine Sonny Perkins have all travelled with the first-team squad for tonight’s match.

“West Ham have brought a number of youngsters with them to Vienna – Jamal Baptiste, Aji Alese, Dan Chesters as expected and Sonny Perkins who has been in fine form for the U23’s of late,” he revealed on Twitter.

Academy boost

Hammers boss David Moyes is no stranger to handing opportunities to those up-and-coming prospects in the club’s youth set-up, having given out an array of debuts since his return to the London Stadium.

And there will not be a better chance to see what West Ham’s biggest young talents can do in the men’s game than in situations like this as the east Londoners have already qualified for the knockout stages of the competition.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/west-ham-news-transfer-updates-rumours-gossip-david-moyes-gsb-premier-league” title=”Read the latest West Ham news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

Of course, the top spot in Group H is still up for grabs, so we may not see some of these names start the encounter but if Moyes’ men can mount an early lead, then there will be no harm in changing things up after the break.

It’s got to be exciting news for much of the Irons faithful, who cannot travel to watch this game live due to UEFA’s sanctions, so many can look on from home with a sense of pride that several more youngsters are being handed a chance to shine at such a level.

Perkins has been in electric form for both club and country this campaign, so he’ll be one to watch, having scored nine goals in 14 appearances across the Premier League 2 and U18s, via Transfermarkt.

Whilst Baptiste and Alese could prove their worth to Moyes, particularly after the recent injury blow suffered to Angelo Ogbonna. There’s a place up for grabs for the remainder of the season in the first-team, so hopefully they can take the opportunity, should they be given it.

All in all, this early news should leave many supporters thrilled heading into kick-off tonight.

AND in other news, West Ham could end striker hunt with 6 ft 1 “monster” who “the chairman really likes”…
