    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With Argentine superstar Messi on board, the Herons did win the inaugural Leagues Cup in 2023. They have made more history this term by winning the Supporters’ Shield with a record-setting tally of points. Collective sights in Florida are now locked on ultimate MLS Cup glory.

  • WHAT LALAS SAID

Questions have been asked of whether Inter Miami deserve their Club World Cup spot, given the claims of others, and Lalas admits that marketing has played a huge part in a big decision. The USMNT legend has told his podcast: “I don’t think anybody is looking at Inter Miami representing, not just Inter Miami, but representing MLS and representing the US in this tournament that’s coming next summer as a bad thing.

“But it never should have gotten to that, it should have been done ahead of time. And I know that this was a work in progress and this is the first in this expanded type of club World Cup that they are going to have, even with the challenge that they have. And this is a very nice thing to have, not just Inter Miami, but obviously Inter Miami with Messi to kind of kick it off.

“And in that moment, Gianni Infantino even said that they will be hosting the first game in Miami. So it is all about Miami, it’s all about Messi using him as a promotional vehicle for this club World Cup that needs promotion.”

WHAT NEXT FOR MESSI & INTER MIAMI?

Inter Miami are about to enter the MLS play-offs as No.1 seeds. They will get that campaign underway against Atlanta United on Friday, with eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi already in MVP contention alongside club colleague and fellow Barcelona icon Luis Suarez.

Man Utd preparing to advance interest in "brilliant" £50m+ Varane heir

Following Raphael Varane's departure, Manchester United are reportedly set to advance their interest in securing a replacement in a deal worth over £50m this summer.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils are undoubtedly in need of a busy summer following yet another Premier League campaign to forget. Ultimately, however, it was not one that cost Erik ten Hag his job, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe opting to keep the Dutchman in charge, despite reportedly assessing other options such as Thomas Tuchel and England manager Gareth Southgate.

With that decision made, the focus has since seemingly shifted to potential reinforcements, which could see the likes of Jarrad Branthwaite and Joshua Zirkzee arrive this summer. The Red Devils have reportedly seen their opening bid for the former turned down, whilst talks have reportedly been held with the agent of the latter in what could be Ten Hag's first arrival of the transfer window.

The forward would instantly replace Anthony Martial, who left as a free agent at the end of the season, and attempt to hand those at Old Trafford a much-needed attacking boost. But the Bologna man may not be the only player arriving to replace a recent departure.

According to A Bola via Sport Witness, Manchester United are set to advance their interest in Goncalo Inacio, whose Sporting CP release clause currently sits at a reported €60m (£51m). The defender has been linked with the Premier League for some time, whether that be Liverpool, Newcastle United, or a move to Old Trafford, and could now finally step into English football to the benefit of the Red Devils.

Given that United were left with no choice but to bring struggling midfielder Casemiro into their backline last season, the potential arrival of Inacio feels crucial if Ten Hag wants to take his side back into the Premier League's top four.

"Brilliant" Inacio would be an upgrade on Varane

Now entering the latter stages of his career and past his prime, Varane bows out of Old Trafford perhaps wondering what might have been rather than what was in a spell dominated by injuries. All parties moved on following the perfect farewell in an FA Cup final victory over Manchester City, however, and now United could land an instant upgrade in the form of Inacio.

Inacio's ability on the ball is particularly impressive and perhaps something that United lacked when looking to finally find some kind of tactical cohesion across all thirds last season, from Andre Onana all the way to Rasmus Hojlund.

The Sporting defender has certainly earned plenty of fans during his time in Portugal, with Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig among them. He described Inacio as a "brilliant" young centre-back as early as the 2021/22 season.

Now 22 years old, the Portugal international looks destined for a big move, with Manchester United's reported advanced interest certainly one to keep an eye on this summer.

After Veiga: Chelsea in the race to sign £25m Calafiori alternative

This summer, there have been seven Chelsea players representing their nations at Euro 2024. At the time of writing, four of those seven players have already been eliminated from the tournament. That includes Romelu Lukaku, who has spent the last two seasons out on loan but is still technically a Chelsea player. His Belgium side lost their last-16 game against France.

The other three to be eliminated are Mykhailo Mudryk of Ukraine, who went out at the group stage despite getting four points; Albania’s Armando Broja and Serbian goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.

The Blues still have three players in the tournament, including one who has already reached the semi-final. That man is Spain’s Marc Cucurella, who has been a key player for his side as they knocked out tournament hosts Germany to set up a semi-final clash with France. The remaining two both play for England. Conor Gallagher and Cole Palmer have both seen some game time this tournament, but have not had a pivotal role to play for England thus far.

With the transfer window coinciding with Euro 2024, it has led the Blues to be linked with some of the tournament’s top performers. They have been linked with one player who could provide a great alternative to Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori, despite the addition of Basel's Renato Veiga.

Chelsea target Serbian defender

The player in question is Serbian centre-back Strahinja Pavlovic, who plays for Austrian Bundesliga side RB Salzburg. The 23-year-old has impressed for his club as well as at Euro 2024, leading him to be linked with several clubs across Europe.

According to a report from Graeme Bailey, Chelsea are one of several sides that “are in the mix” to sign the defender. Bailey confirms the Blues are “never too far away from the discussion” when it comes to a transfer for Pavlovic.

However, they will face fierce competition from several Premier League rivals. Aston Villa, Fulham, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest are all thought to be interested in the player. Wolves are also a side keen on signing the 23-year-old after they lost captain Max Kilman to West Ham.

However, according to Bailey, Brentford are the side who “have stolen a march” on the rest of the chasing clubs, having held talks with the player’s representatives. Whoever wins the race to sign Pavlovic will have to fork out £25m to sign the defender – a fee RB Salzburg expect to receive this summer.

Why Pavlovic would be a good signing

The Serbia international was a key player for RB Salzburg last season. He featured 37 times in all competitions, which included six Champions League appearances. Impressively, he started all but one of the games he was available for throughout the campaign, scoring four times and registering three assists along the way.

He was described as a "warrior" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig during Euro 2024, in a campaign where he started all three of Serbia's games. The appearances that the RB Salzburg defender made at the tournament make up part of an impressive 38 caps for Serbia. It is already his second major tournament after he featured in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Should Chelsea bring the 23-year-old to the club, he could be an excellent alternative to Calafiori. The Italian, who has become something of a household name following his exploits at Euro 2024, was wanted by the Blues, although he now seems destined to join Arsenal this summer, as per Fabrizio Romano. The Italian is thought to be signing a five-year contract at Chelsea's London rivals, earning around £3.3m each season.

In possession, the duo have slightly different profiles, with Pavlovic being a wonderful ball-carrier, whereas Calafiori is more of a progressive passer. According to FBref, Pavlovic averages 1.28 progressive carries per 90 minutes, and completes 0.73 take-ons. In comparison, the Italian averages 1.07 progressive carries and completes 0.5 take-ons per game.

In terms of progressive passing, the Bologna man averages 3.68 progressive passes and 0.65 key passes per 90 according to FBref, compared to the Serbian’s 3.65 progressive passes and 0.37 key passes. Whilst there is not much difference between the two, Chelsea appear to be looking at players with statistically opposing profiles when in possession.

However, there is little splitting the pair defensively, and they are very close when it comes to that side of the game. They also have the benefit of both being left-footed, as Chelsea seem to have a clear plan of recruiting a true left-sided centre-back. This may be a surprise given they have Benoit Badiashile and Levi Colwill as options there already. With that being said, new manager Enzo Maresca may prefer to have extra cover if he wishes to play one of those players at left-back.

When looking at statistics, Calafiori’s class shines through, as he is superior in many defensive areas. For example, he averages more ball recoveries, with 7.43 compared to Pavlovic’s 6.39, as well as more combined tackles and interceptions. Here, the Italian’s 3.72 per game trumps the RB Salzburg defender’s 3.1.

Pavlovic vs Calafiori defensive stats
Stat (per 90) Pavlovic Calafiori
Ball recoveries 6.39 7.43
Aerial duels won 2.72 2.30
Aerial duel win % 55.6% 71.4%
Tackles & interceptions 3.10 3.72
Stats from FBref

Whilst Calafiori may well be statistically superior to Pavlovic, the Serbian would by no means be a bad signing by Chelsea. For just £25m, they can add further depth at LCB, while the Serb can also play left-back.

He is quality in possession and a superb defender who showed his class during Euro 2024. Missing out on Calafiori would be frustrating for the Blues, but they could still sign a top-quality centre-back in Pavlovic, as the stats show – with lots of potential to become even better.

Manchester City knew that a win against Crystal Palace would ensure they remain top of the Women's Super League, and they came out looking to stamp their authority.

The away team suffocated Palace from the off, and didn't allow a single attempt on their goal in the first period. Khadija Shaw and Lauren Hemp provided their customary threat, and both narrowly missed good openings as Palace held firm thanks in no small part to goalkeeper Shae Yanez, who made several key saves throughout.

However, the pressure eventually told, as four minute before the break, Jessica Park saw an opening from 25 yards, and caressed the ball over Yanez and into the top corner for the most sumptuous of opening goals. Shaw saw a point blank header sail over before half time, but City went into the break with the lead and looking confident.

They started the second half as they ended the first, and Jill Roord saw a close range header brilliantly saved by Yanez to keep the deficit down. A minute later, though, the ball fell back to Roord and she made no mistake as she rolled the ball home to double their lead.

The second goal seemed to liven up what had been a fairly rigid Palace performance up to that point. The Eagles missed chances to half City's lead as Blanchard fired over an open goal from a narrow angle before striker Katie Stengel agonisingly hit the post from a Shanade Hopcroft cross.

City punished Palace for their profligacy, as Shaw nodded home the third and final goal from Park's cross. The Jamaican striker deserved a goal for her all action performance, and ensured City are sitting pretty at the top of the table heading into Sunday evening.

    THE MVP

Park was the best player in the pitch at Selhurst Park. She scored a stunning strike from distance that found the top corner with unerring precision, but also ran the show from midfield, dictating the tempo and restricting Crystal Palace to counter-attacks and long balls. She topped her performance off with an assist, setting up a goal on a silver platter for Shaw, and was a key cog in City's maintenance of their unbeaten start to the season.

    THE BIG LOSER

While City deserved the win, Palace's attack let them down against the league leaders. Such is City's quality in defence, the Eagles could only manage four shots throughout the entire game, with just one of those being on target. Stengel was isolated up top, and wingers Indiah-Paige Riley and Hopcroft were barged out of the game by cities possession of the ball.

Arteta loves £40m Arsenal ace and is apologetic for not playing him more

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta thinks a £40 million ace of his is top-drawer, and has been very apologetic about not playing him more often.

Arsenal were neck-and-neck with fierce rivals Man City, as they largely were the season prior, and managed to push Pep Guardiola's side all the way to the final day. Unfortunately, it was out of Arteta's hands in the end by that point, as the Sky Blues beat West Ham to lift their fourth consecutive domestic crown – becoming the first-ever English side to do so.

The north Londoners can feel hard done by, considering they accumulated 89 points, and that total would've been enough to win the league in the vast majority of previous Premier League seasons.

Guardiola has set an enormously high standard for sides competing for the title, but it is a level that Arteta is determined to keep matching. Arsenal are aiming to score over 90 points next campaign in their bid to beat City, with sporting director Edu looking to sign an elite striker for Arteta among other key additions.

“I'm a winner and it takes me a while when I don't reach the dreams," explained Arteta after Arsenal missed out on the title last season.

"I think we should be very proud of what we've done throughout this season both in European competition and the Premier League. But as well, that feeling of being disappointed and not having the Premier League in our hands is painful.

"I think we built so much excitement as well belief around our fans, around the players, around the club that we really wanted to deliver that moment to them. I think they deserve it. I think the team deserve it. You have to congratulate Man City at the end after 38 games. Two points more than us and they are the winners."

It will be interesting to see how Arsenal reshuffle the squad ahead of a third successive title challenge, and one player heavily linked with the exit door this week is striker Eddie Nketiah.

Arteta thinks Nketiah is top-class and regrets not playing him more

Marseille are showing a real interest in the Englishman, according to TEAMtalk, but are set to fail with their opening bid of £20 million – as Edu and co hold out for double that at £40 million.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

Arteta believes Nketiah is a top striker and has even been very apologetic about not playing him more often, as per this report, so Arsenal will not allow suitors to sign him on the cheap given he also still has three years left to run on his contract. A deal could yet be struck for Nketiah, but sides like Marseille will need to push the boat out.

    WHAT MALACIA SAID

Speaking to The Athletic, Malacia said: “Of course, I wanted to be there to support everyone but, for me, the most difficult part was to be up there with the guys (for the trophy presentation), because I wasn’t part of the team during the whole process.

"I was like, ‘I’m staying down here and you guys just enjoy it, then I’ll see you in the dressing room’. He was like, ‘Nah, you have to go up there as well’. And if someone with that kind of experience tells you that, you’re listening.

"They [the squad] said, 'At the end of the day, you’re still part of the team'. I’ve been in a dressing room the whole season and seen everything. They know how hard I’ve been working every day to come back to the team and everything, so they said you deserve it as much as we do."

In light of Lyon's financial struggles, Juventus are contemplating the acquisition of Argentine defender Nicolas Tagliafico in January, according to Calciomercato. Juventus believe Tagliafico could be a good reinforcement to the squad that lost left-back Juan Cabal to an unfortunate ACL injury while training with the Colombia national team last week.

  • AFP

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Juventus have been offered the opportunity to sign Tagliafico in the coming weeks, and club sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli is seriously considering a move for the Argentine World-Cup winning defender.

Tagliafico, who is currently 32 years old, could be a bargain buy for the Bianconeri in January, given his versatility. The former Ajax man can operate both as a left-back as well as a left-sided centre-back. Calciomercatio mentions that Lyon will be ready to sell their defender for no more than €5 million in the winter transfer window.

Additionally, the club has already suffered two ACL injuries this term in centre-back Gleison Bremer and left-back Cabal. Strengthening the defence in January has become a priority for Juventus if they are to challenge for silverware.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Lyon could be forced to sell a handful of their stars in January. The National Directorate of Management Control (NDMC), the financial regulators of French football, have imposed sanctions on Lyon due to their reported debts of approximately €500 million (£418m). The club will be prohibited from making any signings in January, and if they do not resolve their financial issues by the end of the season, they face relegation to Ligue 2. Additionally, Lyon's payroll will now be closely monitored by the NDMC.

Outscored Neto: Wolves could seal Ait-Nouri repeat in move for "revelation"

Wolverhampton Wanderers are certainly building something this summer as Gary O’Neil has made a few signings who could become a big part of the club’s future.

The likes of Pedro Lima, Rodrigo Gomes and Tommy Doyle have joined permanently, while striker Jorgen Strand Larsen has arrived on a season-long loan deal from Celta Vigo.

The building blocks are in place. Now it is time for a few more players to join ahead of the Premier League season.

Wolves target move for Ligue 1 sensation

According to a report from French outlet Foot Mercato earlier this week, Wolves are believed to be showing interest in a move for Lyon defender Jake O’Brien this summer.

Brentford looks like they have potentially struck the first blow, however, as the Premier League side look to have made contact already with the Ligue 1 side, asking about his availability.

No transfer fee is mentioned in the report, although the Irish centre-back does have a contract at Lyon until the summer of 2027, having just signed for them last summer.

The club have had success in the last few years with deals from the French top flight. Could O’Brien be another excellent signing?

Wolves can repeat their Ait-Nouri masterclass

The Old Gold signed Rayan Ait-Nouri from French outfit Angers in September 2020, initially on a season-long loan deal, before he joined on a permanent basis in 2021.

Wolves player Rayan Ait-Nouri

Following the end of last term, the Algerian left-back had made 116 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals and grabbing eight assists in the process. His performances of late have attracted attention from the likes of Liverpool, who appear ready to make a bid for the player.

Indeed, Ait-Nouri has a release clause that stands at around £38m, which means the club could seal a solid profit on the player.

O’Brien could have a similar sort of impact should he also make the move to the Midlands from France this summer. The 6 foot 5 titan made 32 appearances for Lyon last term, scoring five goals in all competitions – a tally that was even ahead of key man Pedro Neto, with the winger scoring just three times across all fronts.

When compared to his positional peers, O’Brien’s attacking qualities stood out as he ranked in the top 4% for non-penalty goals and in the top 10% for assists per 90 across Europe’s big five leagues.

Not only a more 'prolific' presence than Neto, defensively the towering titan was also excellent for his current side last term, winning 3.1 total duels per game – a success rate of 61% – losing possession just 6.8 times each match and recovering 4.7 balls per game in Ligue 1.

It is no surprise then that plaudits have flooded his way, with writer Zach Lowy subsequently lauding the youngster earlier this year on X, describing him as a "revelation" amid his fine start to life in his new surroundings…

With Max Kilman leaving the club recently, there is certainly a space for another centre-back. O’Brien has proven he can excel in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Will Wolves win the race to sign the centre-back this summer? Only time will tell.

Rangers register interest in £5m star who’s a dream Roofe replacement

Glasgow Rangers lost one of their most experienced players at the end of last month as central defender Connor Goldson completed his exit from Ibrox.

The English titan is the latest player to secure a move away from the Gers during the summer transfer window, as part of Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen's overhaul of the squad.

At the end of May, Rangers allowed John Lundstram, Borna Barisic, Kemar Roofe, Ryan Jack, and Jon McLaughlin – all senior first-team operators – to depart as free agents at the end of their respective contracts.

Rangers striker Kemar Roofe.

Clement could now land a dream replacement for Roofe by swooping to sign a player the club are reportedly interested in this summer.

Rangers interest in Scottish star

According to Football Insider, Rangers are one of the clubs in the running to secure a deal to sign Bristol City centre-forward Tommy Conway.

The report claims that the Light Blues have registered an interest in the Scotland international, as they look to bolster their attacking options.

It states that English Championship side Middlesbrough, however, are currently leading the race to land his signature, which suggests that the Gers must move fast if they want to bring him to Ibrox.

Tommy Conway for Bristol City.

Bristol Live recently reported that Boro have made an offer worth up to £5m for the Scottish dynamo, but it remains to be seen whether or not Rangers are prepared to match it.

Why Tommy Conway would be a dream replacement for Kemar Roofe

Roofe was a back-up striker for Rangers who proved himself to be far too unreliable even for that role, due to his fitness issues over the years.

In four years at Ibrox, the forward missed at least 12 games through injury each season and was absent for a staggering 70 matches across the 2021/22 and 2022/23 campaigns combined.

Meanwhile, Conway has only missed ten games through injury in his entire career to date, which suggests that he can be relied upon to be fit and available to provide competition week-in-week-out.

As you can see in the table above, the Bristol City star is also coming off the back of a strong season in the Championship with his current club.

The 21-year-old ace, who was dubbed a "gifted" talent by EFL boss Steve Evans, is regularly available to his team and could offer a greater threat in the final third in comparison to Roofe, based on their recent goal returns.

At the age of 21, he would also come in as a long-term signing as a player Clement could work with to improve over the years to come, whereas the Jamaica international was at the other end of his career and had little room for improvement.
