The United goalkeeper sustained the injury in training prior to his team's tour to the United States last month and is yet to play in any of their pre-season games. Manchester Evening News adds that he will also miss this weekend's friendly with Fiorentina but should return for the Arsenal encounter in just over a week.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Some United fans may be concerned that Onana comes into the season undercooked after missing their games against Leeds United, Bournemouth, Everton, and West Ham. Plus, backup option Altay Bayindir has struggled in goal in the three pre-season matches he has played in. Either way, the Red Devils still have concerns over their goalkeeping situation.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The report adds that Cameroon international Onana, who has made a number of big mistakes at United following his £47.2 million ($63.5m) transfer from Inter Milan in 2023, has a good working relationship with head coach Ruben Amorim – who privately indicated he wanted to keep the 29-year-old early in the summer.

Winners and losers from around Europe's top leagues: Lamine Yamal continues to carry Barcelona while Luis Diaz enjoys dream debut for Bayern Munich – but Diego Simeone is already feeling the heat at Atletico Madrid

Not even wearing Lionel Messi's No.10 jersey fazes the teenage sensation, while there was a touching tribute to Diogo Jota in Germany

Football is returning all across Europe right now, with league play having resumed in France and Spain over the weekend, while Bayern Munich and Stuttgart met in the curtain-raising DFL-Supercup in Germany.

So, even though we're still waiting for Serie A to get back under way, the last few days have already produced a plethora of talking points. For starters, Diego Simeone is already under pressure at Atletico Madrid and things haven’t started much better for Roberto De Zerbi, who is dealing with a divided dressing room at Marseille.

On the plus side, Lamine Yamal has picked up where he left off last season at Barcelona (despite being given an iconic shirt to wear) while Paris Saint-Germain are coping impressively with their total lack of a pre-season.

Below, GOAL runs through all of the big winners and losers from the first weekend of the new season…

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Lamine Yamal's Barca

Hansi Flick is a difficult man to please. Barcelona may have kicked off their Spanish title defence with a 3-0 win at nine-man Mallorca on Saturday – and after successfully registering new signings Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford for the game in Palma – but the German was less than impressed with his players, accusing them of playing at just "50 per cent" during the second half.

"That can't happen," Flick told . "I need to talk to the team about this. These are three important points but I didn’t like the match."

Still, if some of Flick's troops switched off after the interval, Lamine Yamal most certainly did not. The teenage wing wizard, who created Raphinha's opener, kept going right until the end and was rewarded for his relentless endeavour with a late goal that made a mockery of suggestions that he might struggle with the weight of the No.10 jersey this season.

Yamal has been dealing with Lionel Messi comparisons since he first exploded onto the scene a couple of years ago and when he says that he doesn't feel any pressure to perform, he means it. Barca may not have been anywhere near their best on Saturday, but with the peerless Yamal in their team, they won't always have to be.

    LOSER: Diego Simeone

After a stunning summer spending spree, Atletico Madrid's 2024-25 campaign promised a lot but delivered very little. Consequently, coach Diego Simeone really could have done with a strong start to the new season against Espanyol on Sunday. Unfortunately for 'Cholo', Atleti lost their opening game for the first time ever under the Argentine.

As Simeone correctly pointed out afterwards, the Rojiblancos played pretty well for an hour and were well worth the lead given to them by star striker Julian Alvarez, who broke the deadlock with a sensational free-kick. However, the way in which Atleti faded the longer the game wore on brought back some bad memories from last season and left Simeone dealing with some very awkward questions in his post-match interviews, with his decision to take off both Alex Baena and Thiago Almada heavily criticised in the press.

It also didn't help either that Alvarez reacted angrily to his own withdrawal in the closing stages of the game. "It's normal for Julian to get upset by the substitution," Simeone said after the 2-1 loss in Cornella. "We all get angry, even when playing with friends. He was having a good game." Which obviously begged the question: why take him off, then?

Simeone also insisted that Atleti will learn from the shock defeat, but it's hard not to be a little concerned. They may not have spent as much money as last year, but the Rojiblancos have been very active in the transfer market again and a sustained title challenge is the least the board will expect after such a significant investment in the squad. As it stands, though, Atleti are already playing catch-up…

    WINNER: Paris Saint-Germain

There's no hiding the fact that Paris Saint-Germain didn't play particularly well in last week's UEFA Super Cup clash with Tottenham – and they weren't much better against Nantes on Sunday. In both instances, Luis Enrique's side looked like a team struggling to get back up to speed after a gruelling 2024-25 campaign that only came to an end in July – and that's wholly understandable.

PSG didn't have anything resembling proper preparation for the new season. They're essentially having to boost their fitness levels in competitive games, which is far from ideal, and yet PSG are still finding ways to win.

After scraping past Spurs on penalties, they won their Ligue 1 opener thanks to a second-half goal from Vitinha. So, given he felt compelled to start key players such as Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on the bench, Luis Enrique was understandably delighted with the three points picked up at the Stade de la Beaujoire.

"If we want to have the chance to win everything, we need all the players," said the Spaniard, who was particularly pleased with the performance of debutant Illia Zabarnyi. "At the moment, I think being able to play with many different players is important, as is improving in terms of fitness."

Just like last term, then, it feels like PSG are only going to get stronger the longer the season goes on.

    LOSER: Roberto De Zerbi

Second-placed Marseille finished 19 points behind PSG in Ligue 1 last season, but the feeling was that Roberto De Zerbi's improving side might get a lot closer to the perennial French champions this time around.

After just one round of play, though, OM are in turmoil, after a dismal 1-0 loss to 10-man Rennes on Friday. According to , all hell broke loose in the visitors' dressing room after the game, with several players reportedly clashing, including Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe.

A disgusted De Zerbi also allegedly told his rowing players: "The others beat us on the pitch, and we come in here and fight among ourselves. You know what that means? That we have small balls. In Marseille, we need to have big ones."

It's going to be fascinating to see if one of the most combustible coaches in world football can restore order at the Velodrome in the coming days and weeks. Marseille's title hopes – and indeed De Zerbi's job – will likely depend upon it.

USMNT Transfers: Norwich raise price after Josh Sargent's recent form, Yunus Musah open to staying at Milan and Middlesbrough call off pursuit of Max Arfsten

The USMNT Transfer Notebook tracks American player movements, with latest developments for those in the U.S. national team pool

The European transfer window is largely set to close on Sept. 1, which means its business time for both clubs and players looking to potentially improve their circumstances.

While much appears to be settled for players in the U.S. men's national team pool, there are still some uncertainties. Will Josh Sargent – potentially the hottest striker in England's top four divisions – make a move? Is there another about-face in regards to Yunus Musah's AC Milan future? Also it appears as if Middlesbrough have found their solution at left back, and it's not Max Arfsten. What's next, then, for the Columbus Crew star?

GOAL tracks all of the American player movements in the USMNT Transfer Notebook, a recurring feature covering the latest developments for those in the U.S. national team pool.

Sargent's torrid form increases price tag

Those words from hip-hop legend Fat Joe are a fitting way to describe Josh Sargent's current situation at Championship side Norwich. The 25-year-old striker turned down the chance to sign with Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in a $29.7 million transfer earlier this summer.

While interested suitors have come in at the same price for Sargent, according to local Norwich sports outlet Pink Un, The Canaries evaluation is now higher as a result of American's form.

"Any club knocking now better come armed with more than £22 million Wolfsburg were willing to commit to," Pink Un editor Paddy Davitt said in a social media post.

Sargent has scored four goals in as many games for Norwich, and that, along with timing, is why the club is asking more for the striker. It could mean Sargent stays until at least January – unless a Premier League club gets desperate at the deadline.

"There's no club remotely near that," Davitt said. "You wouldn't at this stage close the door, but its hard to see a scenario where Norwich do cash out on him… They might find it harder to keep him in January than they are in the present moment… Around the league, he is widely regarded as the best of his type in the division.

"There is the panic element that comes in [and a team in the Premier League] comes in and they need to go and try and get the best No. 9 outside of the Premier League in this country. Which he is."

Recently promoted sides Burnley and Leeds continue to be linked with the striker ahead of next Monday's deadline.

Musah happy to stay at AC Milan

As recently as Monday, AC Milan's Musah was linked with a move within Serie A to Atalanta in a complex transfer involving four clubs within the Italian top flight. Yet, similar to what has happened all summer, Musah walked back any speculation over a potential move.

"I am happy at Milan," he told ESPN FC. "It is a great club. I'd love to win some great things here. It felt really nice winning the Super Cup last season, so I'd love to win more things. This is what we're expected to do here. I am just happy here, and I am looking to work hard and be a main player in the team."

That certainly doesn't sound like a player pushing for a move, despite struggling for starts and minutes at AC Milan. While things can move very quickly in the transfer world, the 22-year-old has publicly said he wants to stay and fight for his minutes in a crowded, but not fully established, midfield.

Musah, meanwhile, was not included in the USMNT roster announced Tuesday. He said he opted to skip the summer's Gold Cup in favor of much-needed rest.

Boro find a left back, but its not Arfsten

Crew star Max Arfsten has been linked with Middlesbrough throughout August, but the club found another left back option.

The Northern Echo reported Boro have turned to Newcastle's out of rotation Englishman Matt Targett, signaling the end of their chase for Arfsten. Targett, 29, will reportedly join the second division side on a season-long loan, providing valuable depth for a club that had utilize left wingers at full back due to the current state of the squad.

However, the Echo did add Boro are expected to resume their interest in Arfsten in the January window. Definitely one to keep an eye out for.

'He's a panic buy' – Man Utd blasted for signing Senne Lammens over Emi Martinez by former Red Devils goalkeeper

Manchester United’s decision to splash £18.2m on Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens on deadline day has been met with criticism, with former Red Devils keeper Ben Foster branding the move a 'panic buy'. Manchester United finalised the signing of 23-year-old Lammens on transfer deadline day after concerns around Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir. However, many expected Martinez to arrive at Old Trafford instead, with the Argentine openly keen on a switch to Ruben Amorim's side. Foster has now heavily criticised the 20-time English champions' decision to move for the Belgian goalkeeper.

    WHAT FOSTER SAID

Speaking on his Fozcast podcast, Foster said: “Being a goalkeeper for United is the hardest goalkeeping position to play in world football. You need someone with broad shoulders.

“I’ve watched a lot of videos of him [Lammens] on YouTube…and he looks on the eye test like he’s a competent goalkeeper. I’m yet to see what he’s like with the ball at his feet though and I think he’s a panic buy.

"United have probably always got some sort of list of goalkeepers that they look at and they keep tabs on. There will be scouts all over the world…but I don’t think they’ve done an in-depth analysis. A deadline day goalkeeper signing tells me that your club is desperate.”

United’s move for Lammens comes at a time of mounting pressure on the club’s goalkeepers, with Onana and Bayindir both struggling for form and guilty of high-profile errors. The Belgian joined from Royal Antwerp following a strong season in the Pro League, keeping seven clean sheets and earning two Player of the Month awards, and will be hoping to make the No. 1 spot his own.

Monaco have been handed a huge boost ahead of the first phase of the Champions League as manager Adi Hutter has named star summer arrivals Pogba and Fati in the squad for the competition, despite neither player making their debut for the French side yet. However, the duo will be expected to play a key role after the first few games.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pogba joined on a two-year deal as a free agent after serving his 18-month doping ban. The 2018 World Cup winner last played a competitive game two years ago in September 2023, when he was a Juventus player. The Frenchman is working up his fitness and it is expected that he will be available for selection sometime in October.

On the other hand, Fati joined from Barcelona after injuries caught up to him in Spain. The Barca academy graduate had a stellar introduction to the football world as he became one of Barca's best players as a teenager. But, the 22-year-old has been unfortunate with injury struggles, which prompted the Catalans to offload him. Like Pogba, Fati, too, is yet to make his debut for Monaco. He will return to training immediately after the international break.

Back in August, Hutter clearly stated that Pogba and Fati will not be rushed into the team dynamics as their fitness remains the utmost priority. The duo missed the entire pre-season, but could end up playing pivotal roles this season.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Ferdinand’s connection with United runs deep. The former England international enjoyed a highly successful spell at Old Trafford, lifting six Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy under Sir Alex Ferguson. But in stark contrast to those glory days, the current era has offered little to celebrate.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The frustrations of Ferdinand are hardly unfounded, as the 2024–25 campaign was one of United’s darkest in over half a century. Finishing 15th in the Premier League table marked their worst league performance in 51 years. Their woes continued on the European stage, as they fell short in the Europa League final, losing to Tottenham Hotspur.

  • WHAT FERDINAND SAID

As someone who helped enhance the club’s legacy, being forced to witness its collapse from the pundit’s chair was a painful irony for Ferdinand, who stepped down from his role as a TNT Sports pundit after the Champions League final. In a heartfelt conversation with , he said: "It's sad, man. I'm on TV, I've got to talk about this stuff. I'm on the TV, everyone can take the mick out of me. Alex Davies named as Warwickshire's new captain

Takes over from predecessor Will Rhodes after signing contract extension

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Jan-2024Alex Davies has been named as the new captain of Warwickshire, following Will Rhodes’ decision to step down after four years in the role.Davies, 29, has played more than 50 senior matches for the club across formats since joining from Lancashire in 2021, and in last season’s Vitality Blast, he led the side to ten wins out of ten after stepping into the job following Moeen Ali’s unexpected Ashes recall. His promotion comes alongside a new contract that will keep him at Edgbaston at least until the end of 2026, and he’s vowed to “give absolutely everything” to the club’s pursuit of silverware.”My overriding feeling is pride, It’s an honour captaining any club at any level, but to captain a club as big as Warwickshire is a huge privilege, “he said. “Edgbaston has become home to me. I won’t be leaving anything out there on the pitch, I’ll give it my all.”Taking the T20 reins last year has helped prepare me for the role, to really get to know the lads, their different characters and how they like to be dealt with on and off the field. That experience should stand me in good stead.”Warwickshire’s Performance Director Gavin Larsen added: “I’m delighted that Al accepted the captaincy role. We’ve had a good preview of how he operates after he captained for most of the T20 last year. Al was successful, popular with players, communicated superbly, and worked collaboratively with the coaches.”Al was always a strong candidate for captain given his vice-captain experience last year. He certainly displayed all the right attributes to take over should the opportunity arise.”The captain, ultimately, will only be as good as his team. What a good captain can do is bring out the best in his players and Al demonstrated that last summer in the Blast. He’s a people person, and will now be plotting how he can help to take this great club forward.”A decision will be made on the T20 captaincy once Moeen Ali’s Indian Premier League and England commitments are finalised.

Ruben Amorim considering transfer U-turn as Man Utd head coach weighs up striker options despite previously ruling out replacement for Rasmus Hojlund

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim may be preparing to revisit his plans for a new centre-forward as he reportedly continues to assess the club’s options in the transfer market. Despite having already overseen a substantial outlay exceeding £130 million this summer, in Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and Matheus Cunha from Wolves, the Portuguese has not completely shut the door on bringing in additional firepower.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite the club's heavy investment already, Amorim has not entirely shelved plans to pursue a new striker. The sale of Marcus Rashford’s loan deal to Barcelona, which removed £16 million from the wage bill, has eased some financial pressure. In addition, the club has received income through sell-on clauses from past player deals.

While the club maintains interest in Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins and RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, a move remains dependent on further outgoings. They have reportedly shown little interest in Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson, especially at the £80 million price tag that the London side has placed on the forward. However, the Red Devils are hesitant to assist a direct rival while they themselves navigate financial limitations.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

To make room, both financially and in the squad, United are prioritising the departure of several fringe players. The so-called “Bomb Squad,” which includes Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Tyrrell Malacia, has been identified as the group that must be offloaded if new additions are to be considered. Juventus are said to be keen on Sancho, and United believe that Garnacho could attract serious attention from within the Premier League. Amorim’s hopes of reinforcing the forward line hinge heavily on how quickly and profitably United can finalise these outgoing deals.
