Canada's Saad bin Zafar called up by Patriots for CPL playoffs

Saad bin Zafar, the Canada left-arm spinning allrounder, has been called into the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots squad as a replacement player for the CPL 2018 playoffs. Saad comes in following Bangladesh allrounder Mahmudullah’s departure for the Asia Cup in the UAE. Saad left on Monday night for Guyana, where Patriots face Jamaica Tallawahs in Wednesday’s Eliminator.Saad, 31, made his Canada debut in 2008, after moving from Pakistan as a teenager. He was one of the top performers in domestic cricket, and one of only two players, along with Nitish Kumar of Toronto Nationals, to play every match for the champions Vancouver Knights in the recent Global T20 Canada tournament.Saad scored an unbeaten 79 off 48 balls and took 2 for 26 with the ball to be Man of the Match in the final, playing for a Knights side led by Chris Gayle, who also happens to be the captain of the Patriots in the CPL. Aside from Gayle, other teammates from the Knights whom Saad will be joining as part of the Patriots are Rassie van der Dussen, Evin Lewis and Sheldon Cottrell.Saad’s selection makes him the second North American player to have his stock rise through performances in the Global T20 Canada. USA’s Ali Khan was brought into Trinbago Knight Riders squad as a replacement for Ronsford Beaton after a solid season with Winnipeg Hawks, and finished the league phase tied fourth overall in the season with 14 wickets in nine matches. Khan was subsequently one of five Associate players picked in the Afghanistan Premier League draft on Monday, snapped up by the Kabul franchise led by Rashid Khan.

Leeds’ former "brilliant" dynamo has outscored Rutter since leaving for £3m

Leeds United have enjoyed a strong start to the current Championship campaign as they sit in third place and chasing an automatic promotion spot.

Daniel Farke's side beat Huddersfield Town 4-1 on Saturday and have now racked up 25 points and 24 goals scored in their 14 league matches so far.

The form of the talented Georgino Rutter has played a significant role in the club's success on the pitch as the former Hoffenheim man has taken the division by storm this term.

Georginio Rutter's statistics this season

Farke hailed the talented gem as "unplayable" at times after the victory over the Terriers as the French attacker registered his fifth assist of the season.

The 21-year-old whiz has now created a staggering 14 'big chances' for his teammates in 12 starts and has showcased his ability to carve open the opposition's defence on a regular basis.

Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.

However, one criticism that could be levelled at the terrific maestro is that he does not offer a significant goal threat on his own. Rutter has only scored two Championship goals and has had the opportunities to add to that tally with five 'big chances' missed so far.

Meanwhile, the player whose spot in the side he has taken up through the middle of the pitch – Rodrigo – has outscored him at league level this season.

Rodrigo's goal record for Al-Rayyan

The Spain international, who was once dubbed "brilliant" by pundit Micah Richards, reportedly had a release clause of £3m that allowed Al-Rayyan to swoop in to secure his services ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Since moving on from Elland Road, Rodrigo has racked up three goals and three assists in six Stars League appearances for the Qatar-based outfit.

The 32-year-old marksman has also scored two goals in two Stars Cup clashes for Al-Rayyan and this means that the excellent attacker has five goals and three assists in eight games in total for the club.

Former Leeds striker Rodrigo.

Whereas, Rutter has only scored two goals in 27 appearances for Leeds in all competitions since the start of the year, which is a less-than-impressive return for a player who looks to make an impact in the final third.

Marcelo Bielsa splashed out a club-record fee of £26m to sign Rodrigo from Valencia in the summer of 2020 and he went on to score 28 goals in 97 clashes for the English side in total.

The Spanish ace scored 13 goals in 23 Premier League starts last season and only missed four 'big chances', which is a tally of misses that Rutter has already surpassed after 12 Championship starts.

Leeds' current forward sensation is not able to offer the same level of threat in front of goal as Bielsa's former brilliant dynamo in terms of his finishing ability, as shown by their respective statistics.

However, Rutter has been a consistent creative menace for his side and is contributing on a regular basis in ways outside of just scoring goals.

Hopefully, the French phenom will be able to find his goalscoring touch and add a Rodrigo-esque goal threat to his arsenal over the coming weeks and months to become a complete forward.

Bangladesh likely to appoint specialist Test batting coach

Neil McKenzie’s unavailability for Bangladesh’s Test match requirements means the BCB are likely to look for a specialist Test match batting coach

Mohammad Isam26-Aug-2018The BCB are considering appointing a batting coach specifically for Test cricket. Neil McKenzie’s availability being limited only to white-ball cricket has prompted the board to look for a specialised coach, according to the BCB’s chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury.”Neil is a white ball batting coach up to the 2019 World Cup but we need someone for red-ball cricket,” Chowdhury told ESPNcricinfo. “We preferred Neil to also look after red ball cricket, but he is not available. Most of the assignments to the new members of the coaching staff we have given are World Cup targeted, but we are considering someone who can help out in red ball cricket as well as do other work. We have asked our contacts to talk to coaches. Gary Kirsten is also in our assistance process.”The BCB’s search is justifiable: Bangladesh averaged 202 runs per Test innings in the last 12 months, and haven’t surpassed 200 in an innings in the last three Tests. Their batting debacles on their last two tours – to West Indies this summer and South Africa last year – suggest that as far as Test match batting is concerned, Bangladesh have a problem on their hands. In contrast, almost the same set of batsmen performed better in ODIs, as was seen during the West Indies tour when they won the ODI and T20I series after being swept aside in the Tests.England currently are the only international side with format-specific batting coaches: Graham Thorpe for ODIs and T20s and Mark Ramprakash for Tests.Meanwhile, the BCB will also face a decision next month about Sunil Joshi’s tenure as spin bowling coach, which ends after the Asia Cup. He was appointed in August last year.”The current spin coach’s contract is till the end of September, which means up to the Asia Cup. The board’s policy will decide on the spin coach. We will make a move as soon as we get a directive,” said Chowdhury.

Mooney, bowlers power Australia to six-wicket win

Australia dominated again, thanks to Beth Mooney’s 45, two wickets each from Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner, and India’s inability to prop up Smriti Mandhana’s third successive half-century

The Report by Annesha Ghosh at Brabourne Stadium22-Mar-2018BCCIA familiar script that had underpinned the one-sided ODI series between the teams in Vadodara played itself out in the T20I tri-series opener, too. Australia romped to a six-wicket win over India, thanks to Beth Mooney’s 45, two wickets each from Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner, and India’s inability to prop up Smriti Mandhana’s third successive half-century.Resuming momentum from her 67 and 52 in the last two ODIs, Mandhana earned herself the distinction of India’s fastest T20I half-centurion. The innings transpired after Australia captain Meg Lanning sent India in, and a maiden over from Megan Schutt greeted Mithali Raj and the 100-odd spectators on Thursday morning at an otherwise empty Brabourne Stadium.Mandhana started off in a manner starkly different to Raj’s. She stepped out to Gardner off the second ball of her innings, and followed it up with a late glide past the wicketkeeper for a second four in three balls in the nine-run over. By the end of the Powerplay, Mandhana had tonked six fours and a six for her 20-ball 33 to help steer India to 47 for no loss, with Raj on 13 off 16.Mandhana brought up her half-century off 30 balls, even as Raj’s bid to break the shackles led Healy breaking her stumps for 27-ball 18 in the tenth over. Soon after, debutant and left-arm spiner Sophie Molineux nearly had Mandhana chop on on the fourth ball off her second over, but the inside edge would only trickle to short fine leg. However, five balls later, she sent Mandhana back for a 41-ball 67 with a catch at mid-on off Gardner. Her dismissal in the 14th over triggered a familiar Indian middle-order wobble and helped Perry snipe out Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur within the first three balls off the next over.India’s labour at 100 for 4 would have soon resulted in an even worse capitulation, had it not been the ingenious striking of allrounder Anuja Patil. During her 21-ball 35, Patil hooked and swept Perry to hammer 14 runs off the 18th over that spoiled Perry’s figures to 4-0-31-2.Patil added 14 more off her next four balls, before a back-of-the-hand full ball on middle from Delissa Kimmince had Molineux pick out Patil at deep midwicket. Veda Krishnamurthy then struck a four and a six in the last over to hoist the hosts to 152 for 5.During Australia’s chase, it took Jhulan Goswami all of five deliveries to make an impact upon her return to the squad from a heel injury after she missed the ODI series. After getting hit for two fours, a seam-up back-of-a length inswinger took the top of Alyssa Healy’s middle stump.Goswami snared Australia with a similar template in her next over. Gardner flayed Goswami through the point region for two back-to-back fours but a missed pull on the next ball cost her the middle stump and ended her eight-ball 15 cameo.Mooney and Elyse Villani subsequently took Australia to 57 for 2 after six overs, after suffering two scares courtesy Patil. Introduced as the first-change bowler, Patil collected a Mooney drive and darted it straight back through the batsman’s legs into the stumps. The replays, however, showed Mooney’s back toe back just in time.Mooney then struck three fours in the next over off Shikha Pandey during her 32-ball 45 and anchored the 79-run third-wicket stand with Villani. The duo, however, fell in consecutive overs, as Mooney holed out to Pandey, handing Goswami her third while Villani offered a return catch to Poonam Yadav in the 14th over. With 41 needed from as many balls, Lanning walked in at No. 5, and hammered four fours and a six. Her 44-run unbeaten stand with Rachael Haynes lent a degree of eventuality to India’s chase with a flurry of fours. The most incisive one came off Rodrigues, as Lanning bisected a near-non-existent gap between point and cover point. Equally authoritative was her lofted drive off Poonam that brought up Australia’s 150th run, before she hit the winning runs off Rumeli Dhar, in the penultimate over, en route to her 35 off 25 balls.

Anderson adds voice to Test fears

James Anderson has admitted he fears for the future of Test cricket as players and spectators favour the shorter formats. While Anderson, a veteran of 134 Tests, insists a career as a T20 specialist would never have appealed to him, he concedes younger players could be seduced by a format of the game that is, as he puts it, “easier on the body and brain and a lot easier on the pocket”. As a result, he feels it appears “less likely” that all three formats of the game will survive. And while Anderson defended the ECB’s apparent prioritisation of white-ball cricket in recent times – “what the ECB did was the right thing as our white-ball form was horrendous” – he has also called on the governing body to do something to ensure Test cricket isn’t “pushed to one side”.Anderson’s comments are, in part, inspired by recent announcements from Alex Hales, Adil Rashid and Morne Morkel who have all committed themselves, in the short term at least, to a future outside Test cricket. But Anderson was also alarmed by the paucity of spectators attending the first day of the Test series between South Africa and Australia in Durban.”That’s potentially the most exciting series around the world,” Anderson says, “but crowds around the world seem to be dwindling.”It’s a really tricky time for cricket. And yes, I do worry that it could become a one-format game. People have asked for a long time if three formats can survive and, the more time goes on, the less likely it looks. I’d hate to see it. I’d hate to see cricket being a one-format game.”Although unsurprised by recent developments he feels there is a danger such prioritisation of T20 cricket will “set an example” to young players.”I am not surprised at all. I thought it would happen with the way contracts have gone and I am sure there will be other people that follow in the future,” he said. “There are incentives in white-ball cricket now, especially being able to play all the Twenty20 stuff around the world. It’s getting quite lucrative in terms of the money you can earn.”The danger for us is that it becomes, not an epidemic, but popular among players to do this. I do worry if more and more players do this, whether that sets the kind of example we want for younger guys coming through into the game. Will they want to go on and play Test cricket and put in the hard graft of playing five days on tough pitches? Or will they want to go forward in a game that would potentially be more lucrative for them?”If you speak to the young guys coming through, the chance to play Test cricket is still what motivates them. I just worry they will get caught up in T20 as it’s easier on the body and brain. And a lot easier on the pocket as well.”Might the ECB have done more to prevent the trend? By pushing Championship cricket into the margins of the season, creating a window of white-ball cricket in mid-summer and offering white-ball central contracts they have at least opened themselves to the accusation of prioritising the shorter formats.James Anderson salutes the crowd for his five-for•AFP

But while Anderson agrees it would “definitely” help England if they could play more Championship cricket in mid-summer, he is sympathetic to the administrators’ juggling act when it comes to scheduling the season and feels a greater investment in white-ball cricket was necessary. He does, however, urge the ECB get the balance right.”From an England point of view, they had to put money into white-ball cricket because our performances in World Cups has not been good enough,” Anderson said. “What the ECB did was the right thing as our white-ball form was horrendous. That World Cup in 2015 was dreadful and something needed to be done. They’ve gone about it the right way.”But we have to be careful not to go too one-day. We have to find a balance because there is such a legacy of Test cricket in this country and we can’t lose that. These competitions around the world are fantastic to watch but, as good as they are, I would hate to see Test cricket suffer more than it is at the minute.”There has to be a balance and I hope Test cricket doesn’t get pushed to one side almost. With the new T20 competition coming in as well in 2020 there is a danger that there is this huge focus on white-ball cricket so I just hope that the ECB are aware of this – I’m sure they are – and are willing to do something about it.”In an ideal world, yes, we would definitely play more four-day cricket in mid-summer. But the actual logistics of doing that, when you have a T20 competition to fit in and you want to do that round the summer holidays, are quite tricky? Do you put the 50-over stuff in at the start when it’s going to be 180 v 160 on green seamers? Do people want to see that? I definitely think we have to play more four-day cricket in the height of summer but the actual logistics behind that are quite tricky.”Despite the incentives – both financial and in terms of stress on the body – Anderson is adamant that, even if he was starting his career now, he would not be seduced into a future as a T20 specialist.”I was brought up in an era where Test cricket was the pinnacle,” he says. “Even as a teenager that’s all I wanted to do. One-day cricket I enjoyed, but it was always Test cricket for me that interested me and the reason why I wanted to play.”I have always played cricket to challenge myself. I have always wanted to improve and succeed at the highest level. And for me, the highest level is Test cricket. It has just got that extra something about it. It is tougher mentally, it is tougher physically and when you win a five-day game you feel a real sense of achievement. I certainly wouldn’t get that from bowling four overs for 56. So no, I would absolutely not go down that route.”There is still a huge amount of support out there for all three formats. When we play Test cricket in England there are lots of kids who watch a full day’s play. I am sure there is still interest out there.”From an England perspective, we need to start winning series more consistently to give people that ambition. And it’s the players’ duty, first and foremost, to champion all three formats when we get the chance. All we can do as players is try to promote the game. Then it’s down to people to keep coming to watch.”James Anderson was speaking on behalf BRUT Aftershave. Follow @BRUTforMen for more.

Leeds Plotting Move For "Outstanding" £25k-p/w Maestro

Leeds United are now plotting a move for Norwich City midfielder Kenny McLean, who could be brought in to replace a first-team player, a recent report has revealed.

What's the latest Leeds transfer news?

Leeds may still have to deal with a couple of departures this summer, with Wilfried Gnonto recently handing in a transfer request, having grown unhappy about being denied a move away from Elland Road, with Everton making a total of four offers.

The Toffees' most recent bid was in excess of £25m, but the Whites have insisted he is not for sale, and they had previously been planning to reintegrate him into the squad, although they may be forced to change their stance given the Italian's desire to leave.

With Gnonto looking like he could depart, Daniel Farke is running the rule over some new attackers, with Football Insider reporting the 49ers ready to green light a deal for Norwich City's Josh Sargent, while they are also keen on Aston Villa's Jordan Archer.

In terms of other potential departures, it has now been reported that Leeds are planning to keep playing Illan Meslier, in order to keep him in the shop window before the transfer deadline, and Tyler Adams is also set to leave, having passed his Bournemouth medical.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, the Whites are now plotting a move for McLean, who could be brought in as a replacement for Adams, with Farke of the belief the Norwich star would add some experience and guile to his young squad.

The manager is a big admirer of the midfielder, as a result of the success they shared during their period working together at Carrow Road, with the Canaries winning the Championship title in both 2019 and 2021.

However, Leeds will need to put in a convincing bid if they are to prise the 31-year-old away from Norwich, as he still has two years remaining on his current contract, and his club would be reluctant to lose him to one of their Championship rivals.

How much does Kenny McLean earn?

The 31-year-old is currently tied down to a £25k-per-week contract at Carrow Road, where he has been a key player for a number of seasons, making over 30 appearances in Norwich's last four league campaigns.

Earlier this year, the maestro was lauded as "outstanding" by Norwich boss David Wagner, so it is clear to see why the Canaries are hesitant to let him leave, but he could be a solid signing for Leeds if they are able to get a deal over the line.

Norwich captain Kenny McLean.

The Scot's best attributes are his defensive qualities, ranking in the 86th percentile for aerials won per 90, and the 79th percentile for clearances per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers.

Leeds will be very disappointed to be losing Adams, as the American has averaged more tackles, interceptions and blocks per 90 than the Norwich midfielder during that timeframe, but McLean is very experienced at Championship level, and he could be a solid replacement.

Ashwin, Vijay out cheaply as TN fold for 176

A round-up of the first day of Ranji Trophy games from Group C

Bhargav Bhatt’s four-for dismantled Tamil Nadu•Sivaraman KittaBaba Aparajith’s half-century was the sole innings of prominence for Tamil Nadu as they were dismantled for 176 by Andhra’s bowlers in Chennai. Bhargav Bhatt and Y Prithvi Raj shared seven wickets between them to run through TN’s batting line-up, while Bandaru Ayyappa and Shoaib Md Khan picked the rest.TN’s India players, M Vijay and R Ashwin, were both dismissed for single-digit scores, making 4 and 9 respectively. Vijay was the first wicket to fall, in the seventh over, and in the next over, Prithvi Raj dismissed Abhinav Mukund to leave the score at 15 for 2. Kaushik Gandhi and B Indrajith attempted to steady the innings with a 26-run partnership for the third wicket, but Bhatt thwarted them by dismissing Indrajith. Aparajith, meanwhile, anchored one end to take TN to 140, after which the tenth-wicket pair of Rahil Shah and Krishnamoorthy Vignesh helped lift them to 176.Andhra ended the day at 8 for no loss, with Prasanth Kumar (1*) and Srikar Bharat (7*) at the crease.A 199-run fifth-wicket partnership between Devendra Bundela and Shubham Sharma propelled Madhya Pradesh from 69 for 4 to a solid 268 for 5 against Baroda in Indore. Bundela was dismissed on 99 by seamer Atit Sheth off the last ball of the day.Madhya Pradesh were in the midst of a wobble after losing openers Waseem Ahmed (4) and Rajat Patidar (4) within the first ten overs, and slipped further when Naman Ojha (24) and Harpreet Singh (32) were dismissed before lunch. A middle-order charge from Bundela and Shubham made Baroda’s bowlers toil without reward until the end of the day, when 40-year old Bundela was caught by wicketkeeper Pinal Shah, thus missing out on his 27th first-class hundred. The first day’s play between Odisha and Tripura was washed out without a ball being bowled in Cuttack
