Leeds still pushing to sign "great" new gem who "Steinsson likes a lot"

As Leeds United aim to go one better than last season by earning promotion to the Premier League, they are pushing to add a player to Daniel Farke's squad who technical director Gretar Steinsson is reportedly a big fan of.

Leeds transfer news

Since falling at the final hurdle in the Championship's play-off final, Leeds' biggest task has been keeping hold of star players such as Crysencio Summerville. The winger enjoyed an excellent campaign last time out, scoring a sensational 21 goals and providing a further 10 assists in all competitions to attract the interest of the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle United.

As things stand, however, Summerville remains a Leeds player and someone who will undoubtedly play a large part in their hunt for promotion once again next season, should he stay put. If the Whites do manage to keep hold of the Dutchman, then adding further attacking depth around him will be crucial, which is where one particular target could come in.

"No" – Leeds given brutal answer to links with permanent midfield signing

The Whites have been told they have little chance of securing one of their targets on a permanent basis.

ByBen Browning Jun 21, 2024

According to Graeme Bailey speaking to Leeds United News, Leeds are still pushing to sign Daniel Jebbison this summer. Bailey said: "That one is ongoing. We know it is someone who Steinsson likes a lot so we will see where we go with that one, but Leeds are still very much in contention.”

Any deal will be an instant bargain thanks to Jebbison's free-agent status following the end of his Sheffield United contract last season. Still just 20 years old, the forward would add depth to Farke's frontline and may even come back to haunt his former side next season after the Blades were relegated from the Premier League in the last campaign.

"Great" Jebbison has plenty of potential

Whilst he saw his chances limited last season, Jebbison is still the youngest player in Premier League history to score on his first start, having netted against Everton in the 2020/21 campaign. Now, three years later, he has the chance to take that clear potential elsewhere and towards Elland Road, with Leeds seemingly hopeful of helping the young forward reach his best.

daniel-jebbison-everton-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

If the previous praise of Sheffield United coach Jack Lester is anything to go by too, then it's no surprise that Steinsson is a fan of Jebbison. Lester said via Yorkshire Live: "Daniel’s doing great. He had a bit of a stop start one with his injuries. People forget that he’ll still be a teenager at the start of next season so he’s developing really well. He’s got some fantastic physical attributes and we will continue to work to develop him."

In a risk-free move which doesn't involve a transfer fee, Steinsson will be among those hoping to get a deal over the line for the former Sheffield United gem this summer. Whilst it's not a deal that will steal the headlines, it is one that would add further depth to Farke's attack next season.

Man Utd legend Paul Scholes explains why he's been 'disappointed' with Arsenal this season despite unbeaten start

Arsenal may be unbeaten after five Premier League matches so far this season, but they have failed to impress ex-Manchester United star Paul Scholes.

The Gunners sit two points behind leaders and reigning champions Manchester City after the two teams played out a feisty 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. The north London team came agonisingly close to claiming a victory, only for a late equaliser to ensure they left with a point.

After finishing second behind City in the Premier League table for the second year in a row last season, Arsenal are pushing to dethrone Pep Guardiola's team this time around. However, ex-England midfielder Scholes feels they are "struggling" already.

WHAT SCHOLES SAID

"Arsenal, at some point, have got to beat them [Manchester City at the Etihad]. They nearly did it, and it was a great effort," he said on podcast. "I sat here at the start of the season and thought Arsenal might win the league, but I’ve been a little bit disappointed with their start to the season.

"Arsenal have been poor going forward this season. You look at all the goals they scored last year, and everyone was talking about getting a centre-forward in the summer and you thought they probably didn’t need it. But five or six games in, it feels like Arsenal are struggling – it’s not quite clicking."

Arteta's team will aim to book a place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup when they take on Bolton on Wednesday. They will then return to Premier League action with a home game against Leicester on Saturday.

Leeds could spring a surprise by unleashing "boundless" gem over Byram

The nerves will already be in the air in West Yorkshire ahead of tonight's decisive Championship semi-final second-leg clash between Leeds United and Norwich City, with a winner coming out victorious at the end of play no matter what even if a penalty shoot-out is required.

Daniel Farke's Whites will hope it's a more straightforward affair sealed in normal time for the sake of the tense Leeds fans watching on around Elland Road, with the promotion hopefuls wanting to attack from minute one to score early to calm down anxiety levels.

To achieve that, the German boss could be prepared to make some bold selection calls which could even see Sam Byram drop out of the starting XI despite putting in a valiant defensive effort in the stalemate first leg in Norfolk.

This could well be the switch that makes the Whites more gung-ho on the ball, as opposed to allowing the Canaries to play on the nerves of the home team struggling to break them down to then try and eke out a result.

Leeds defender Sam Byram.

Sam Byram's performance vs Norwich in numbers

Byram, up against his former employers, put in a rock-solid shift at right-back to ensure Leeds weren't breached making the trip down to Carrow Road.

Completing five tackles in total, which included one heroic effort to thwart an advancing Borja Sainz for David Wagner's men, the 30-year-old full-back also won an impressive eight duels from the 13 he attempted on the day.

Still, the defender's attacking game in Norfolk arguably left a lot to be desired which has been the case for the majority of the season too.

Failing to complete a single accurate cross in the contest, on top of zero on-target efforts and zero key passes being registered, the ex-Norwich man didn't ever really strike fear into the Canaries down the flanks.

Looking at the table above, Roberts could well give Leeds more of an attacking impetus from down the channels if selected ahead of Byram tonight with the Welshman raring to make a difference after a stop-start loan switch to date with Farke's side.

How Roberts could impact the game

Roberts' directness as an attack-minded full-back helped Burnley to pick up the Championship title during the 2022/23 season, hopeful, in the here and now, that he can aid Leeds in their own promotion story.

The 28-year-old's "boundless energy" – as it was referred to by The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell – would be a very effective calling card for Farke to play tonight, especially if Norwich sit back.

Indeed, Roberts could just run and run until the Canaries can't keep the Leeds attacks at bay any longer.

Already scoring a big goal this season in front of the Elland Road masses, firing home the equaliser against Leicester City in February when automatic promotion still looked achievable, Roberts is the man for the big occasion as was showcased with the Clarets.

His strike against Middlesbrough towards the latter stages of the 2022-23 campaign clinched promotion up to the Premier League for Vincent Kompany's men, with the potential for him to play another starring role if selected against Norwich.

Burnley right-back Connor Roberts.

Leeds will know Norwich won't be pushovers and will come with a staunch gameplan in mind, with the likes of Blackburn Rovers winning by a solitary goal in the regular season by frustrating the home side in this manner.

But, in such a huge contest, the Whites will need to be firing on all cylinders in attack and Roberts could be a smart call to start alongside the usual suspects of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter.

Relieve us from BCCI role, CAG asks Supreme Court

Says it is unable to perform its role as independent member on Apex Committee

Nagraj Gollapudi08-Jul-2020

The Comptroller & Auditor General (CAG) of India has asked the Supreme Court to relieve its nominee from the BCCI’s Apex Committee, on the grounds that it is “unable” to function as an independent voice and carry out the primary job assigned to it: to provide financial oversight to the BCCI and the state associations. This move has come soon after its representative on the panel raised questions this week over the attendance of BCCI secretary Jay Shah for the council meeting on July 17.The inclusion of the CAG official on the Apex Council of the BCCI, the state associations and the IPL Governing Council, was one of the most significant recommendations of the RM Lodha Committee, approved by the court in its seminal order in 2016. The objective, the Lodha Committee said and the court agreed, was the CAG nominee would “ensure transparency and financial oversight” in the functioning of the BCCI.The Apex Council comprises nine members, of whom the CAG official is the sole independent figure. The rest include five BCCI office-bearers (president, secretary, vice-president, treasurer and joint secretary), a representative appointed by the BCCI general body (states) and two representatives from the Indian Cricketers’ Association. On July 4, Alka Rehani Bharadwaj, the CAG representative, asked BCCI president Sourav Ganguly to ensure that only “eligible” office bearers would attend the Apex Council meeting next week. Although Bharadwaj did not cite any names, her letter raised questions about whether Shah could attend the meeting as he has reportedly finished his term of six years as an office-bearer and would need to undergo a three-year cooling-off period under the BCCI constitution.Incidentally, the CAG filed its petition on July 3, a day before Bharadwaj sent out the email to BCCI. In its plea, the CAG said that it was approaching the court based on the experience of Bharadwaj, who had attended three Apex Council meetings and four IPL Governing Council meetings since her appointment last December. The CAG said its representative was tasked with a job outside their “expertise.””The Apex Council of the BCCI and the Governing Council of the IPL are charged with governance functions, and are required to take management decisions which are administrative in nature, to discharge their duties,” the CAG said in the petition, seen by ESPNcricinfo. “Such management and administrative decisions include deciding fixture of matches, finalisation of cricket calendar for team India, deciding fee of players depending upon their performance and representation of the Board before the International Cricket Council, organising IPL etc. Whereas, the expertise of CAG is in financial audit of institutions to bring about financial transparency, and as such, the current role being played by the CAG nominee in BCCI is completely different from their field of expertise.”According to the CAG, with “majority” of the members on both the Apex Council and the IPL Governing Council comprising BCCI office-bearers and administrators, its representative was just “party to decisions, whether or not she/he is in agreement” with the decision(s). “The inclusion of a member of CAG in the Apex Council or IPL Governing Council is not serving the objectives of the Justice Lodha Committee as well as this Hon’ble Court, by being part of the management decisions, in fact, precludes the oversight role envisaged.”The CAG also pointed out that as per the BCCI regulations the “roles of Management and Audit” needed to be distinct and demarcated and the current role being served by the CAG official was “thus not in conformity”.The CAG said its “core” function was auditing. And being the “supreme audit institution” in the country, it was the “auditor of the last resort”. However, in case there was a “dispute” over the “quality” of the audit carried out by the private consultants hired by BCCI, the CAG would find itself in a spot. “Being party to decisions taken by Apex Council of BCCI/ IPL Governing Council would effectively preclude the CAG from undertaking any subsequent audit, or discharge any supervisory role over the quality of audit done by the CAs/private auditors. In fact, ironically, the CAs/private auditors would sit in judgment over the managerial decisions to which CAG’s nominee is a party.”The CAG requested the court to consider “modifying” its original order where it could perform its primary role – of an auditor – on an “annual” or “biennial” basis. “Needless to say, the cost of audit will be charged to the BCCI or State Cricket Associations, and deposited to Government Account, as is being done in certain cases where audit of the statutory corporations such as Airports Authority of India, Food Corporation of India, National Highways Authority of India etc., is undertaken by the CAG. The oversight role for the CAG envisaged by the Hon ‘ble Court would thus be fulfilled, and it would help bring about more transparency, efficiency and effectiveness in the functioning of BCCI and the State Cricket Associations, which would be consistent with the recommendations of the Lodha Committee.”In 2016, the BCCI had strongly opposed the appointment of the CAG nominee with the then board president Anurag Thakur even going to extreme lengths. At the time, the then ICC chairman Shashank Manohar told the court that Thakur had sought a letter from him which said allowing a CAG representative to sit on the Apex Council would amount to government interference; it was against the ICC rules. The court said there was a perjury case against Thakur, who is currently the Minister of State for Finance & Corporate Affairs in the Indian government. Soon after, the court sacked Thakur as the BCCI president for failing to implement the Lodha reforms.

West Ham submit new bid for teen "superstar", quick developments expected

West Ham are set to return for a future star this summer, it has emerged, with the attacker having caught the eye with a string of excellent performances.

Hammers need more firepower

It is no secret that David Moyes' side are in need of more in the final third of the pitch, but they appear to have the opposite of the midas touch when it comes to recruiting strikers. The Premier League side have tried to sign big name forwards in recent years, with Sebastien Haller arriving from Ajax for £45m and Gianluca Scamacca moving from Sassuolo to east London in a deal worth £35m.

But neither enjoyed their time at the London Stadium, and the pair were quickly shipped off to other clubs, where they have since excelled.

Meanwhile, winger turned striker Michail Antonio headed home his 67th Premier League goal in West Ham colours during their 2-2 draw with Liverpool, and the 34-year-old still appears to be the only striker that can truly thrive in West Ham's system, continuing to be a regular starter despite his advancing age.

Michail Antonio for West Ham

Signed all the way back in 2015, the Hammers have signed ten strikers in the nine years since, but only Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez can claim to have had a successful spell in east London.

Three of those ten have joined and left the club without finding the back of the net, while the Hammers made a hefty loss on just about all of them in the transfer market.

Now, Moyes' side are hoping to change the worrying pattern with their latest addition.

Future superstar on West Ham's radar

That comes courtesy of reports in Brazil (via Sport Witness), who have linked West Ham with a second offer for impressive attacker Wesley Gassova, after Tim Steidten was reportedly in Brazil to watch the talented teen.

The Hammers have already seen one bid rejected by Corinthians for their forward, with claims that the Premier League side tabled a 15m euro offer for the 19-year-old. However, ESPN Brazil now claim that the Hammers have returned for the player, upping their offer to 18m euros (£15.3m)

West Ham now make large offer to manager who plays "spectacular" football

ByBen Browning Apr 28, 2024

Though Corinthians are yet to agree to the offer, it is added that "intermediaries involved in the operation are trying to convince them to change their mind" and they expect "more developments in this case in the next few hours or days".

Wesley has been a regular for Corinthians, playing across the frontline for the Brazilian outfit, and has been hailed a future superstar by talent scout Ben Mattinson.

Should he make the move to the London Stadium, he will be given the ultimate opportunity to prove that he is just that.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    WHAT NEXT FOR OLMO?

For now, the Spaniard is expected to take a short break before joining RB Leipzig for pre-season. The German side are set to travel abroad for pre-season for the first time in history as they will visit the US later this month.

The Aston Villa starlet who could be Emery’s homegrown Diaby replacement

Aston Villa head into the March international break inside the top four as they compete to secure Champions League football for the 2024/25 campaign.

Unai Emery's side were guaranteed to keep their place in the top four after Tottenham Hotspur were thumped 3-0 by Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Despite the incredible success on the pitch for the Villans this season, the Spanish head coach has still found room to integrate and develop academy talent throughout the campaign.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery during a Premier League game.

Jacob Ramsey, who came up through the youth system under Dean Smith, had already established himself as a first-team regular before Emery's arrival.

The former Villarreal boss could now unearth Ramsey 2.0 and find his own homegrown heir to last summer's big-money signing Moussa Diaby with U21s starlet Omari Kellyman, who has caught the eye already this season.

Jacob Ramsey's Villa career in numbers

The 22-year-old ace made his debut in the Championship during the 2018/19 campaign but did not make another league appearance for the club until the 2020/21 Premier League season.

He played 22 times, and started six of those outings, in the top-flight under Smith throughout that term, and failed to produce a goal or an assist for the team.

Jacob Ramsey for Aston Villa

The England U21 international then hit his stride with six goals and one assist across 34 Premier League appearances for the Villans during the 2021/22 campaign.

His best campaign, in terms of goals and assists, came under Steven Gerrard and Emery last season, with six goals and seven assists in 35 Premier League games.

As you can see in the table above, Ramsey was an efficient finisher – having outperformed his xG – and had reason to be frustrated with his teammates as they only scored seven goals from the eight 'big chances' that he created for them.

The young dynamo has, unfortunately, been out with a foot injury at times this season. This has restricted him to 16 appearances and eight starts in the Premier League this term, in which time he has scored one goal and provided one assist.

Irrespective of his lack of regular action during this campaign, Ramsey is a role model for the current crop of academy youngsters to look up to as they aspire to emerge as first-team regulars under Emery.

Kellyman, who is also an attack-minded player, could be the next goalscoring midfielder to come through the academy and catch the eye for the Villans, which could make him the long-term heir to Diaby, who has had mixed success throughout the season.

Moussa Diaby's Villa stats this season

The club swooped to sign the France international winger from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen for a record fee of £51.9m last summer, and he has produced seven goals and eight assists in 41 matches so far.

He has not nailed down a guaranteed place in the starting XI in the Premier League under Emery, however, as the speedster has only started 18 of his 29 league appearances this season.

The 24-year-old whiz has been too wasteful in front of goal at times with a return of four goals from an xG of 5.04 – with five 'big chances' missed – in the division.

However, Diaby has offered impressive creativity with ten 'big chances' created and six assists in those 18 Premier League starts for the Villans, which means that he has created more than one 'big chance' every other start on average to provide his teammates with high-quality opportunities in front of goal.

The French gem is, however, currently on a run of zero goals and one assist in his last nine appearances in the English top-flight for Villa, which has contributed to his lack of starts.

Diaby, who predominantly plays on the right or through the middle as a left-footed forward, has been inconsistent in front of goal and will need to improve his output to work his way back into the team on a regular basis.

If his form does not improve then Kellyman could start to breathe down his neck as the 18-year-old Villa starlet has been in exceptional goalscoring form for the academy this season, and has already showcased his quality at first-team level despite his young age.

Why Omari Kellyman could be Moussa Diaby's heir

The teenage magician, who was once described as a "star in the making" by journalist Ashley Preece, is also a versatile left-footed attacker who can play centrally or out wide on the right – cutting in on his favoured foot to cause problems for the opposition.

Kellyman was handed his full first-team debut for Villa by Emery against Hibernian in a Europa Conference League qualifier back in August of last year.

As you can see in the table above, the teenage ace, who lined up alongside Jhon Duran up front, hit the ground running at senior level with an assist and a 67% duel success rate, which shows that he stood up to the physical test of professional football.

Kellyman has since returned to playing U21 football regularly for Villa and is currently on an exceptional return of eight goals in 12 matches across the Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy for the young Villans.

This means that he has scored more goals than Diaby (seven) has in 40 first-team matches in just 12 games for the U21s during the 2023/24 campaign.

Aston Villa midfielderOmari Kellyman.

The England U19 international could, therefore, have the potential to offer more of a goal threat to the team if he can develop and translate that form over to the senior squad in the future.

His creative quality was also on display with an assist on his full debut against Hibs earlier this season, and this suggests that the left-footed star could offer a threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals at the top end of the pitch in a similar position to Diaby.

Therefore, Emery could eventually unearth his own homegrown heir to the France international with Kellyman, who is six years younger than the former Leverkusen star, by getting the teen star to follow in Ramsey's footsteps to become a first-team regular.
