Tottenham internally debate hijacking Aston Villa talks for £21m forward

Tottenham Hotspur chiefs are talking about swooping in to hijack Aston Villa transfer talks for a forward in January, and he could be a sound alternative to widely-reported target Randal Kolo Muani if they can’t get a PSG deal done.

Spurs exploring Kolo Muani deal as Postecoglou chases forward

Ange Postecoglou has already got his first winter signing over the line with a deal for goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague, and the Czech ace performed excellently on his debut against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

Officials contact Tottenham as Postecoglou offered "frustrated" £33m player

The Spurs head coach has an opportunity to reinforce a key area with quality.

Kinsky became only the second shot-stopper to keep a clean sheet against Liverpool across all competitions this season, after Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels, with the 21-year-old making six saves on the night and shutting out Arne Slot’s side in a 1-0 win.

Spurs now have the advantage heading into their Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg at Anfield, with technical director Johan Lange’s work to sign Kinsky seriously paying off already.

However, the Dane is by no means done there, as Tottenham are in the market for a new winger and have set their sights on PSG’s Kolo Muani as an ideal January signing – considering his quality, versatility and availability.

This is confirmed by reliable transfer journalist David Ornstein of The Athletic, who wrote on X that the Lilywhites are viewed as top contenders for his signature before deadline day.

The France international is a mainstay of Didier Deschamps Les Bleus squad, and has been since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Kolo Muani also boasts three goals from his last five matches for France, but his fortunes are seriously contrasting at club level for PSG.

The 26-year-old is out of Luis Enrique’s plans at the Parc des Princes, and has been completely left out of their last two Ligue 1 matchday squads. His exit appears to be inevitable, but Spurs must also compete with Man United and Juventus for Kolo Muani’s services.

If Postecoglou’s side potentially lose out on the ex-Eintracht Frankfurt star, then it appears they’re considering Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen.

Tottenham internally discuss hijacking Aston Villa move for Donyell Malen

The Dutchman, who has 41 caps for the Netherlands, finished last season as Dortmund’s top goalscorer with 15 goals in all competitions – and he’s out of contract in 2026.

Aston Villa have this week increased their bid to £21m, making him a seemingly affordable option for Spurs, though it is believed Villa have been locked in talks for a while and have got the green light from the player.

Borussia Dortmund'sDonyellMalen

That being said, there is apparently still a gap in valuations between the clubs, and a report by CaughtOffside states that Tottenham are internally discussing the possibility of hijacking Villa’s talks for Malen.

Postecoglou’s side are believed to be real fans of the 25-year-old, who can play on both flanks and further forward as an outright striker. Malen also bagged a goal and assist against Real Madrid in the Champions League earlier this season, indicating he can perform at the highest possible level.

Will Jacks hit the highest individual score of the Hundred this summer as his 81 steered Oval Invincibles to a 39-run win over Welsh Fire at Sophia Gardens.Jacks batted from the first to the 99th ball to notch the joint second highest score in the men’s Hundred to join Colin Ingram and David Willey just behind Liam Livingstone’s current record high of 92.His late burst of sixes pushed Invincibles to 154 for 5 and enabled them to put their London derby defeat on Thursday behind them as they picked up their first win and condemned Fire to a second successive defeat.Related

Fire outperformed by fireworks as Hundred season starts with a squeak

Having won the toss, Fire sent in Invincibles and quickly added to the pain currently being felt by England star Jason Roy by sending him packing for a mere 10 runs off as many balls. If that was an improvement on his golden duck in the opening round of the Hundred against London Spirt, he showed his frustration at tickling the ball to short fine leg by tossing his bat in the air as he walked back to the pavilion. The pace attack of David Payne, Jake Ball and George Scrimshaw bowled tidily enough on a tricky wicket to initially restrict the run rate. Given they only took one wicket in their heavy defeat against the reigning champions, Southern Brave, in their opening game it didn’t take them long to improve on that.Scrimshaw returned the favour to Payne, who caught Roy, by catching the dangerous Rilee Rossouw at short third and all of a sudden it was 22 for 2 with two key batters back in the hutch.Sam Billings steadied the ship alongside Jacks until he left two balls after being struck in the box and taking a very necessary injury break. His departure, lbw to Ryan Higgins, made it 51 for 3 from 41 balls and put even more responsibility on the shoulders of Jacks. The opener, Surrey’s top scorer in the Blast, steered the side to 57 for 3 at the halfway mark, reached his half-century with a cracking four through extra cover off Payne and then went on the rampage with a series of boundaries. His 50 came up in 36 balls and he added a further 31 off his next nine deliveries before holing out on the boundary off the penultimate ball of the innings. A four off the last ball by Tom Curran meant the Invincibles had set a reasonable target of 154.Joe Clarke gave the home side a good start, punishing spinner Danny Briggs with successive sixes in his opening over. He would go onto top score with 37 as he enjoyed stands of 46 with Tom Banton and then 26 with Ben Duckett. But once he was caught in the deep aiming for another boundary off Tom Curran the writing was on the wall for Fire. They had only made 107 off 100 balls against the Brave and were eventually held to 119 for 6 as Sam and Tom Curran put on the squeeze, both conceding only 24 runs from their 20 balls each.Sunil Narine chipped in with three wickets as he conceded 21 runs off 20 balls.

    THE GOSSIP

Carragher has now joked about lacing up a pair of gloves and trading blows between the ropes. Said idea was floated during a visit to a Merseyside boxing gym for the former England international, who linked up with UFC star Darren Till for some training exercises.

  • WHAT JAMIE CARRAGHER SAID

Quizzed on whether he would like to aim punches at Neville in a bout organised by KSI and Co for Misfits Boxing, Carragher told the : “I mean, I fight with him every week on telly so I might as well do it in the ring on fight night. We could even do a nice charity night against each other. That would be good, wouldn't it?"

    DID YOU KNOW?

Carragher has limited experience of life in the ring, but once sparred with WBO interim light-heavyweight champion Callum Smith. The 47-year-old added: "A few years ago, I think for charity, a few of us paid to jump in with the Smith brothers. I was with Callum. It didn't go very well for me. Callum was just throwing at me.

"As you could imagine, I couldn't do anything about it. Playing football is a completely different kettle of fish to being in the boxing ring."

Southampton must sell a flop who earns more than Walker-Peters & Fernandes

Ivan Juric has been unable to turn around the Southampton sinking ship since his arrival to the South Coast in late December, as the Saints stare a dire relegation straight in the face.

The Premier League table doesn’t lie with Southampton rock bottom of the pile currently on just six points, with an alarming ten point gap opening up already between the division’s basement club and Wolverhampton Wanderers in 17th position.

Whilst survival looks a tall order, there are a few faces in Juric’s camp that will continue to hold their heads high as bright sparks during these bleak times.

Southampton's top performers this season

One of those faces is Mateus Fernandes, who has looked lively for his lowly side even as games have slipped out of their grasp.

He was a standout performer during Southampton’s recent 3-1 loss at Old Trafford with three shots tallied up on Andre Onana’s shaky goal alongside two successful dribbles being registered, whilst the promising Portuguese midfielder also assisted Paul Onuachu’s late header away at Nottingham Forest last time out as the Saints flickered into life at the death.

Away from the Saints number 18, there has also been the occasional brilliance of youth product Tyler Dibling in attack who has managed to pick up two Premier League goals, whilst Kyle Walker-Peters has also threatened to get back to his blistering best.

Even in a Southampton side that has only mustered up a pitiful 15 top-flight strikes, Walker-Peters has still collected two assists, with a number of clubs reportedly circling for his services now amidst talk he will turn down any contract extension put forward to him.

Juric will hope he can keep a firm grip on the 5 foot 8 full-backs this month – away from all this speculation – but the Croat is unlikely to put up much of a fight to hold onto another defender on the contrary.

The latest on Charlie Taylor's future at Southampton

As per Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas earlier this month, Charlie Taylor is one figure Juric will be looking to offload this January, with other names on Thomas’ list looking to exit St Mary’s being Maxwel Cornet and Ben Brereton Diaz, as the latter now finds himself on loan at Sheffield United.

Therefore, Taylor could be the next fringe presence to be moved on, considering he has barely featured for the South Coast side this season after moving to the newly promoted team from Burnley last window.

Indeed, the ex-Clarets man has only started two times for his relegation-doomed outfit in the Premier League, with his last showing in the league seeing him introduced into the game at the half-time interval, only for the Saints to be resoundingly trounced 5-0 by Brentford.

Whilst he is by no means the only individual guilty of being an underperformer when you consider Southampton’s rock-bottom status, his steep wage will also be another major factor as to why there’s an increased hunger to get him off the books this January.

Wage costs over the year

£1.5m

Looking at the table above, away from his poor defensive numbers, Taylor also surprisingly rakes in a hefty £30k-per-week pay packet, which means he earns more than both the aforementioned Walker-Peters and Fernandes.

The far brighter pair both earn £20k-per-week away from Taylor’s high earnings, with the Saints defender’s wage costs over the full year coming in at an extortionate £1.5m despite such a lack of game-time.

Therefore, it makes a lot of sense why Southampton want to get rid of the 31-year-old defender this month, as Juric attempts everything in his power to boost spirits to try and build some positive form.

Southampton need all the January recruits they can get to turn around their depressing season.

Knight undergoes surgery for injured hip, will miss India series and WBBL

Heather Knight has undergone surgery on her injured right hip and will continue to be out of action for the foreseeable future. The England women’s captain tweeted that she would miss the home series against India in September as well as the WBBL in October-November. She said she was hoping to return to the field by the end of the year.Knight is already missing the Hundred, where she was expected to lead London Spirit for a second season.

In Knight’s absence, England were led by Nat Sciver at the recent Birmingham Commonwealth Games (CWG 2022), where they made the knockout stages but were unable to progress further. Australia beat India in the gold-medal match and New Zealand beat England in the bronze-medal match.Sciver is expected to lead England for the India series – three T20Is and three ODIs, to be played between September 10 and September 24.Though Knight picked up the injury during the first T20I of the bilateral series against South Africa on July 21, she had initially been named in England’s CWG 2022 squad, as captain. But after England’s first two games, which she sat out, the team management said that the injury had “failed to settle down as expected.”Knight had injections in her hip joint while sitting out the last two matches of the South Africa series in an effort to recover, but Sciver said after England’s first two CWG 2022 games, “She’s not in a good place. She’s better than she has been in the last few days, still in a bit of pain with her hip.”No replacement was named for Knight, and she stayed on with the squad for the duration of the event – cricket at CWG 2022 ended on August 7. More recently, before the surgery, Knight was a part of the BBC broadcasters’ panel for the Hundred.

England suffer coaching setback after Richard Dawson groin injury

Assistant coach to fly home from Pakistan, ruled out of World Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Sep-2022England have been forced to make a late change to their coaching staff for the T20 World Cup after Richard Dawson, one of their assistant coaches, sustained a groin injury during their tour to Pakistan.Dawson was carried off the pitch at Karachi’s National Stadium after pulling up during a fielding drill in England’s training session on Saturday night and returned to the team hotel in a wheelchair later that evening.”After being assessed in Karachi, he will be unable to continue during this tour of Pakistan and will fly home to the UK on Wednesday,” the ECB said in a statement.Dawson was one of Matthew Mott’s three assistant coaches for this tour along with Carl Hopkinson and David Saker, with Michael Hussey due to join the staff ahead of the World Cup in Australia. The ECB said that a replacement coach for the World Cup would be “announced at a later stage”.England have separated coaching staff between Test and white-ball cricket since Rob Key’s appointment as managing director earlier this year but Dawson’s injury may require one of Brendon McCullum’s assistants to be drafted in.

He can usurp Jackson: Chelsea hold talks over signing £50m "super talent"

Enzo Maresca had a brilliant start to life as a Premier League manager, guiding Chelsea on a brilliant run where they only lost to Manchester City and Liverpool in their opening 17 fixtures, leaving them second in the division behind Liverpool.

Many of the Blues’ best players started the season in red-hot form, with Nicolas Jackson scoring consistently, Cole Palmer doing what he does best, and the likes of Noni Madueke and Enzo Fernández also chipping in with some important goals.

However, in recent weeks, the goals seem to have dried up, which could force the Chelsea directors to look into the transfer market, after missing out on an additional striker signing in the summer, which was clearly something they wanted after such intense interest in Victor Osimhen.

Galatasaray's VictorOsimhenis picture wearing a protective face mask

With the January window heading into its last week, the Blues will have a decision to make, whether they look to strike now or begin the groundwork to sign their striker of choice come the summer.

Chelsea looking at Premier League striker

According to reports from Simon Johnson (quoting Journalist Ben Jacobs, who spoke on an X space), Chelsea are currently in pole position to sign Ipswich Town striker, Liam Delap, although they may have to wait until the summer to do so.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Jacobs stated: “I think Chelsea are in pole position for Liam Delap, and I think they are ahead of other clubs in terms of player buy-in. One for the summer.”

This suggests Chelsea are looking to do the groundwork now in order to bring Delap to the club in the summer and compete with Jackson.

This corroborates reports from Simon Phillips who who suggests that talks have taken place between the two parties regarding a deal. A cash move could take place with midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka also heading in the opposite direction.

Delap – valued at £50m – has made 23 appearances for the Tractor Boys so far this campaign, scoring eight goals, providing two assists and totalling 1,705 minutes played in his debut Premier League campaign.

How Liam Delap compares to Nicolas Jackson

Much of the goal-scoring onus has been on Jackson this season, of course, alongside Palmer, and up to now he has done well to cope with it, scoring nine goals and providing five assists in 23 appearances this season.

His overall work both on and off the ball makes him a good fit for Maresca’s system, but the Blues clearly need a plan B when the Senegal international isn’t firing.

Christopher Nkunku has been used as another striker option this season, but a mixture of his lack of off-ball work rate, his tendency to want the ball into his feet rather than making runs in behind and the fact he isn’t a natural centre-forward makes it hard for Maresca to get the best from him.

When comparing the metrics of both strikers, you can instantly see Jackson is contributing more in the build-up, completing more progressive actions (passes and carries), creating more for others with his key passes and shot-creating actions, and providing assists for the team.

However, in key metrics, Delap does come out on top, winning more aerial duels and finishing at a better rate (0.17 to 0.15 when comparing their goals/shot ratio).

Delap has been described as a one-man “battering ram” by Opta Analyst this season, analysing his tall, stocky build and physical prowess, mixed with his ability to carry the ball and affect the game with his excellent ball-striking.

The signing of Delap – a “super talent” in the eyes of pundit Danny Murphy – would clearly bring some much-needed physical attributes in the striker department, bringing a different profile to Jackson and therefore allowing Maresca to make tactical decisions based on the game, and which type of striker suits the game plan best.
