Earps announced her shock international retirement on Tuesday, less than six weeks before England's European title defence is set to begin in Switzerland. The Paris Saint-Germain star has fallen slightly behind Hannah Hampton in the pecking order, starting just one Lionesses game in 2025, and reports suggest that played a part in her decision.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

According to , Earps was called into a meeting with head coach Sarina Wiegman and was told she would be England's second-choice goalkeeper at Euro 2025, behind Hampton. The report says that the 32-year-old responded by saying "she would retire rather than be back-up". Wiegman then "accepted her resignation with immediate effect".

WHAT WIEGMAN SAID

Speaking in the official announcement of the news, the Lionesses boss said: "I had hoped that Mary would play an important role within the squad this summer, so of course I am disappointed. Mary has been clear on her reasons why she has made the decision and it is something we need to accept."

That "important role" no doubt relates to the nurturing of some of the younger talent in the England squad, including Hampton. The 24-year-old will be a starting goalkeeper at a major tournament for the first time this summer and none of the Lionesses' other options for the position even have a cap to their name, meaning Earps' experience would be invaluable.

When Earps told Wiegman on Monday that this was her decision, reported that it "angered" the Dutchwoman, particularly due to the timing of the news.

Hasan Ali, Oliver Hannon-Dalby restore Warwickshire control with last-wicket stand

Momentum had previously been with Essex seamers, led by Doug Bracewell

Essex 126 and 86 for 4 (Westley 28, Rushworth 2-21) trail Warwickshire 242 (Rhodes 63, Hasan 53*, Bracewell 4-51) by 30 runs A buccaneering tenth-wicket stand of 70 restored Warwickshire’s control after Essex fought back hard on the second day of their captivating LV=Insurance County Championship match at Edgbaston.Essex closed day two on 86 for 4, still trailing by 30, in a mesmeric contest between two potential title-challengers.After bowling Essex out for 126 on day one, Warwickshire appeared set for only a modest lead when they lost seven wickets in 17 overs to dip to 172 for 9. The momentum was firmly with Essex’s seamers, led by Doug Bracewell’s 4 for 51, but last pair Hasan Ali (53 not out) and Oliver Hannon-Dalby clouted 70 from 69 balls to lift their side to 242.The wagging tail extended the lead to an imposing 116 and piled the pressure back on Essex who need their middle and lower orders to bat big tomorrow. Further twists are likely in a match which has fluctuated wildly throughout. After Warwickshire resumed on the second morning on 17 for 2, Will Rhodes (63) and Sam Hain (45) batted through the morning session to take their side to 104 for 2 at lunch – just 22 behind. A big lead beckoned but the seeds of an Essex fightback had been sown by Sam Cook and Simon Harmer. Late in the morning they bowled 14 overs for 17 runs to ensure that, despite wickets intact, the home side had not got away. Then, after lunch, wickets came in a heap.Shane Snater triggered the collapse with a brace of excellent balls which did for Hain and Dan Mousley in successive overs. Ed Barnard batted attractively for 28 but Bracewell’s removal of him, bowled through a drive, triggered the loss of five wickets in 32 balls. Sam Cook trapped Danny Briggs lbw while Bracewell forced fatal edges from Michael Burgess, Chris Rushworth and Rhodes who, having batted with great responsibility, departed cursing himself at being lured into reaching outside off stump. From 172 for 9, Warwickshire’s last pair brought the crowd to its feet with an audacious counter attack. Hasan Ali began it by launching Cook twice into the Hollies Stand. Hannon-Dalby joined in with successive sixes pulled off Bracewell to raise the 50 stand from as many balls. Hasan located the seating again to bring up his half-century from 33 balls. When Hannon-Dalby finally edged Snater behind, the flow of the match had reversed spectacularly again.Second time around, Essex lost Nick Browne, bowled by Rushworth in the third over. Tom Westley and Alastair Cook started to put down roots of the hefty stand their team required but fell lbw in the space of three overs. Barnard ousted Westley before Hassan dismissed Cook. On a damp, grey afternoon, in front of a smattering of Championship diehards, the former England captain trudged off the Edgbaston field where he enjoyed some of his greatest moments – 294 vs India, 243 vs West Indies – for almost certainly the last time: a poignant dimension to two days of cricket with more angles than you can shake a stick at.

Man City show concrete interest in "electric" star after £12m price drop

Manchester City are now showing concrete interest in a defender, whose price tag has now dropped by £12.5m, but there may be competition for his signature from Real Madrid, according to a report.

Man City keen to strengthen at full-back

Kyle Walker joining AC Milan on loan last month could spell the end for the right-back at the Etihad Stadium, and Pep Guardiola has started to work on finding a replacement, with widespread reports linking Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento with a move.

Not only is Pep looking to strengthen at right-back, but the manager is also keen to bolster his options on the opposite side, with Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso remaining on the list of targets, having been interested in signing the Italian during the January window.

Other left-backs to be considered by City in recent times include Paris Saint Germain’s Nuno Mendes and AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez, with Pep seemingly looking to bring in competition for Josko Gvardiol.

There has now been a new update on the Sky Blues’ pursuit of Hernandez, with TEAMtalk revealing the left-back is now likely to leave AC Milan this summer, with the Italian club slashing their asking price from £41.5m to £29.5m.

Amid the £12m price drop, Man City are now showing concrete interest in the left-back, who is now climbing higher on their shortlist, with the £29.5m fee considered a fair price.

AC Milan'sTheoHernandezcelebrates

The only potential issue is the fact Real Madrid have also expressed an interest in the Frenchman, and he would be open to a return to the Bernabeu, having spent two years with the Spanish side earlier in his career.

Hernandez is a top attacking left-back

Throughout his career, the Milan defender has consistently provided an attacking threat, despite almost exclusively featuring at left-back, providing seven goals and six assists in the Serie A during the 2020-21 campaign.

Freelance Ben Mattinson has described the former Madrid man as “electric fast”, while also branding him “the best attacking LB in the world”, so it is promising news he could be available for just £29.5m this summer.

Although the report states the France international’s form has dipped this season, he has remained a key player for Milan, and he has continued to provide a consistent attacking threat over the past year.

Not only does the defender impress on the front foot, but he has also received praise for his defensive work in the past too, being lauded by CBS’ Marco Messina.

As such, Hernandez could be a fantastic signing for City this summer, and given that his price tag has fallen significantly, they should definitely pursue a move.

No need for Kalvin Phillips: Farke must unleash Leeds teen who's Gray 2.0

Leeds United fans will be experiencing a serious case of deja vu at the moment as their side begin to wobble towards the back end of the Championship promotion race.

Indeed, last campaign, Daniel Farke’s Whites had to make do with a playoff spot and lost the resulting final at Wembley, meaning another collapse at this stage with Leeds occupying an automatic promotion position would be an almighty kick in the teeth.

Leeds United manager DanielFarkeapplauds fans

Therefore, everything will be crossed in West Yorkshire that they can get over the line, rewriting the narrative that the club often bottles the big occasion.

Whether promotion is sealed or not, the manager occupying the Elland Road dug-out will continue to select a whole host of exciting youngsters when they’re deemed first-team-ready, with the Whites boasting a fantastic track record concerning their homegrown gems.

The best young stars to come through at Thorp Arch

Farke has been unafraid to chuck promising starlets into the first team picture, with the German boss kickstarting Archie Gray’s insane rise in the Whites senior set-up.

All 52 of Gray’s first team appearances in West Yorkshire fell under the ex-Norwich City manager’s guidance, leading to Leeds cashing in on their versatile 19-year-old when playoff heartbreak then followed which gifted the promotion nearly men a bumper £30m.

Away from losing Gray’s services, Farke also has the likes of Mateo Joseph at his disposal up top, with the academy product bagging three goals from 11 Championship starts this season.

But, of course, discussions surrounding the cream of the crop to have come through the Thorp Arch ranks wouldn’t be complete without Kalvin Phillips’ name, with the Leeds-born midfielder notching up 14 goals and 13 assists from 234 games before an adventure out to Manchester City occurred.

Whilst that big switch hasn’t worked out, the Whites are now being linked with a reunion deal for the 29-year-old.

But, the promotion chasers might well have the next best thing away from Phillips in another up-and-coming youngster.

The next top youngster at Leeds

Casting an eye at the current talent in the U21 age bracket at Leeds, there should be plenty of faces ready to make the leap up to the first team very soon.

One of those wide-eyed starlets with a very bright future at the Championship side is 18-year-old Rhys Chadwick, who will fancy his chances at being the next Phillips when glancing at his classy midfield ability.

Capable of playing further forward as a number ten or as a more defensive option centrally, Chadwick is now up to 70 appearances for both the U21s and U18s, with goals and assists coming like clockwork for him this campaign.

This season alone, the teenage sensation boasts six goals and six assists from 18 total clashes, with his aforementioned versatility also drawing some similarities to the recently departed Gray, as Chadwick aims to potentially replicate the 19-year-old’s whirlwind story very soon.

Looking at the table above, much like Gray who had to fill in at right-back under Farke, the 18-year-old can do a job wherever necessary, with two of his appearances this season in Premier League 2 coming up top.

But, Farke would likely want to utilise Chadwick in a more central role, particularly with the fact Joe Rothwell could be off at the end of the campaign when his loan deal expires.

Bumping the teenager up to the senior fold would also mean Leeds don’t have to risk splashing the cash on Phillips to come good, with a further likelihood that Chadwick could find himself on this list of record sales if everything goes to plan, becoming another £30m talent in the process.

Worth more than Phillips: Leeds have hit the jackpot with "monster" star

Leeds United are certainly reaping the rewards of their hard work in the market given one player’s rise.

DPL week six: Abahani on course for DPL title after Sheikh Jamal drop crucial points

Afif Hossain scored a century as Abahani Limited maintained their unbeaten record in the Super League

Mohammad Isam07-May-2023Key takeawaysAbahani Limited maintained a 100% record in the Super League phase of the Dhaka Premier League. They beat Mohammedan Sporting Club, Prime Bank Cricket Club and Legends of Rupganj, while defending champions Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club dropped points against Gazi Group who beat them by seven wickets. Sheikh Jamal were bowled out for 89 runs. With two matches remaining for all teams in Super League, Sheikh Jamal must win both. Their last game is against Abahani, on May 13, which could be the title decider. If Sheikh Jamal drop points before, the last round is a mere formality for Abahani.Best batters – Afif Hossain, Zakir Hasan impressAbahani’s Afif Hossain scored heavily this week to keep them in the title hunt. He struck an unbeaten 111 against Prime Bank. In another match, it was the Prime Bank openers Shahadat Hossain and Zakir Hasan who struck centuries, only the fifth instance of both DPL openers hitting a century. Amite Hasan also made a century to help Shinepukur in their crucial relegation playoff against Agrani Bank. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club’s Fazle Mahmud missed out on a century when he made 93 not out against Mohammedan.Best bowlers – Khushdil Shah takes another six-forAbahani’s latest foreign recruit Khushdil Shah claimed 6 for 49, the second six-for in the DPL this season, against Prime Bank in Fatullah. Ripon Mondol’s four-wicket haul also came in handy for Abahani against Prime Bank. Naeem Ahmed and Hasan Murad took five and four wickets respectively to help Shinepukur crush Agrani Bank in their last relegation play-off match.Best match – Abahani vs MohammedanThere hasn’t been a memorable Abahani vs Mohammedan match, dubbed the Dhaka derby, in many years. So when Abahani staged a late comeback to beat their one-time arch-rivals on the first day of the Super League this season, it attracted some headlines.Abahani won by eight runs after Mohammedan faltered at the end of their 259-run chase in Mirpur. Tanzim Hasan Sakib’s fantastic penultimate over got Abahani the win, as he gave away just four runs when Mohammedan needed 24 off the last two overs. Mosaddek Hossain then closed out the game with an effective final over. Points to ponderAbahani and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club are in a two-team race for the title while at the bottom of the points table, Shinepukur Cricket Club won their relegation playoff matches. It means Agrani Bank and Dhaka Leopards are relegated to the Dhaka First Division Cricket League next season.Players to watch – Mahmudullah, Mosaddek, Nurul among runsAmong the players competing for a place in the Bangladesh side, Mahmudullah, Mosaddek Hossain and Nurul Hasan got two fifties each this week. Usually a strong finish in the DPL keeps players close to senior team selection for the rest of the season. So with a lot of important one-day cricket coming up for Bangladesh in 2023, these runs could prove vital.

Berta must axe 4/10 Arsenal flop who earns a lot more than Nwaneri

Since taking charge of Arsenal in December 2019, Mikel Arteta has dramatically altered the club’s trajectory.

The Gunners are now a team who regularly challenge for the Premier League and have made the Champions League quarter-finals for the second year in a row.

While the Spaniard’s philosophy and tactics have played a significant role in the club’s rapid rise, his signings have been just as effective.

However, the team does look like it’ll need a minor overhaul this summer to keep it competitive, meaning incoming Sporting Director Andrea Berta will need to move several players, including one who did not impress last night and earns significantly more than Ethan Nwaneri.

The Arsenal players who should be moved on

So, with an incredibly important summer of reshaping the team to finally get over the line to come, we’ll start with the players who are almost certainly set to leave due to their contracts expiring at the end of the campaign.

Thomas Partey and Jorginho’s deals expire on June 30th, and while they could likely still contribute to the side next year, reports suggesting they’ll stay are few and far between.

Similarly, Raheem Sterling and Neto’s loan deals will run out at the end of May, and while there is a slim chance the latter could join for free, the former has proven beyond all doubt that he no longer has what’s required to play for a title-chasing side.

Kieran Tierney has already agreed a pre-contract with Celtic, and while the player he started in place of last night, Leandro Trossard, still has another year on his deal, it might be time for the club to cash in on the supposed interest in him from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad in September.

The Belgian has been rather underwhelming this term, racking up a tally of just 13 goal involvements in 42 appearances, although at least he’s getting regular game time, unlike Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The Ukrainian international was a key part of the club’s initial title charge in the 22/23 campaign, but with him earning £150k-per-week and barely featuring this term, it might be time to move him on in the summer, even if he did well against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night.

Finally, another player who should be sold as soon as possible was one of the rare starters last night, but unlike Zinchenko, he did not make a case for his further inclusion.

The Arsenal ace who should be sold

Unfortunately, a few starters from last night’s clash didn’t step up to the plate, such as Jorginho, but in this instance, we are talking about Jakub Kiwior.

The Polish international, who joined the club from Sepzia in January 2023 for around £20m, was defensively shoddy, poor with the ball at his feet and earned a dismal but fair 4/10 match rating from GOAL’s Sean Walsh.

However, while his performance against PSV was disappointing, the argument for selling him goes beyond that, as even though the club has endured plenty of injuries this season, he’s started just nine games all.

Riccardo Calafiori, Jurrien Timber and Myles Lewis-Skelly are ahead of him in the pecking order at left-back, and when Takehiro Tomiyasu recovers from his surgery, we imagine he will be too.

It’s the same story at centre-back, with the Italian, Dutchman, Japanese international and Ben White all likely ahead of him without even getting to the Gunners’ regular starting pair of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes.

If the 25-year-old defender, whom content creator Phil Costa branded “not good enough,” was earning a minuscule wage to sit on the bench and only make an occasional start, his presence in the squad wouldn’t be an issue.

However, while he isn’t one of the big earners, he’s still making £58k-per-week, which is way more than the likes of Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly, who are already contributing to the first team in a significant way.

Ultimately, while Kiwior isn’t a bad footballer, he’s not of the standard required to be an Arsenal player, and with the summer a chance to add some world-class talent to the team, Berta and Co should look to move him on.

After scoring in Al-Nassr's final game of the season, Ronaldo sent the rumour mill into overdrive by posting a cryptic message on social media that appeared to suggest he is set to wave goodbye to the Saudi Pro League side. He wrote on Instagram: "This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ronaldo had already been linked with a move this summer and there has been speculation he could sign for a club participating in the Club World Cup. Former Argentina goalkeeper Jorge D'Alessandro has, rather optimistically and perhaps with slight tongue in cheek, now urged Boca Juniors to try and sign Ronaldo and has told chairman Juan Román Riquelme to bring the 40-year-old to the club.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Jorge D'Alessandro told El Chiringuito: "It gives me goosebumps… Directing Boca's attack? Boca needs him. He's going to the land of Leo Messi, Diego Maradona and Hugo Gatti… imagine that! Let Riquelme try it, please! I see him more at Boca than at a Brazilian team. He identifies more with a need, also because of his personality, because of the way he plays… That vertigo that Boca has, next to Zenón, next to Merentiel… I'm going crazy!

"Boca is truly in an institutional crisis, it is a ship adrift. I think Ronaldo would arrive as a balm for Boca, as well as a chance to improve their footballing level. And for him, it would mean that Argentina would pay homage to him in the place of the greatest, indirectly Messi and directly Maradona.”

It remains to be seen where Ronaldo will head next but his future is obviously the subject of much speculation in the wake of his intriguing update on social media. Yorkshire break nine-month winless run by sneaking past Notts

Yorkshire 182 for 7 (Malan 95*, Masood 34, Brooks 4-51) beat Nottinghamshire 174 for 4 (Hales 53, Munro 46) by eight runsDawid Malan hit 95 off 56 balls, backed up by skipper Shan Masood’s 34 off 23 as Yorkshire Vikings shocked Notts Outlaws to register their first win of the 2023 season – and their first in any format since August 2022 – with an eight-run victory in the Vitality Blast at Trent Bridge.Yorkshire’s 182 for 7 after electing to bat first proved to be enough, despite Alex Hales hitting a half-century for the second consecutive night and Colin Munro making 46 off 41 as David Wiese took 2 for 32 for the visitors, who chalked up their first T20 win on this ground since 2015.”There were a lot of nerves at the end but Jordan Thompson bowled a fantastic last over to get us over the line,” Ottis Gibson, Yorkshire’s coach, said. “We have been struggling a bit for wins without playing as badly as the results might suggest and and we are hoping the confidence the players draw from that will set us up nicely for another big game, a Roses game, on Thursday night.”When you win the toss and bat, you need someone to bat through the innings for you and Malan is one of the best in England and played a really a good innings. We had spoken about needing one of the top four to bat through the innings and he took it upon himself to do that tonight.”Jack Brooks, on loan from Somerset, took four wickets on his Outlaws debut but at a cost of 51 runs, with the home side feeling the effects of having three frontline bowlers (Jake Ball, Luke Fletcher and Olly Stone) currently injured.Yorkshire posted a modest 41 for 2 in the powerplay, losing two wickets in the space of four deliveries in the sixth over as Adam Lyth and debutant Will Luxton departed in similar fashion, each trying to hit over the infield but succeeding only in launching the ball vertically, Matt Carter and Colin Munro respectively combining safe hands with a steady eye as Brooks celebrated his first two wickets.Related

The right-arm seamer, who turns 39 next Sunday, had seen his first over against his former county go for 17 runs as Malan and Lyth went on the attack and it was little wonder his wickets brought animated celebrations.Masood joined Malan in plundering 50 runs in 35 balls but the Pakistan international, having cleared the rope a couple of balls earlier, holed out to Lyndon James on the leg-side boundary.Malan missed few chances to score but lost another partner as Wiese picked out long-off, handing veteran spinner Samit Patel his 200th T20 wicket for Outlaws, and at 122 for 4 from 15, Yorkshire needed some acceleration. It came in the last three overs, which contained another two fatal miscues off Brooks and one off Shaheen Shah Afridi but a feisty 15 in 6 balls from Ben Mike and 17 off the last Brooks over, including a fourth six for Malan, just clearing the fielder at long-off.

Outlaws were marginally in front at 48 from the powerplay, having lost Joe Clarke to a steepling top edge in the second over and though they were slightly behind the required rate at 78 for 1 from 10, the second-wicket pair were still together, Hales completing 50 from 30 balls with his eighth boundary, although Munro had an escape on 24 when his pull fell just short of deep backward square. That changed in the 13th over, when Hales edged Wiese straight into the hands of Luxton at backward point. He and Munro had added 84 but Outlaws needed 84 from 47 balls and needed to maintain momentum.Fortunately for them, Montgomery was into his stride immediately, a couple of streaky boundaries followed by a clean hit six into the Fox Round stand off Dom Bess. Nonetheless, the pressure was still on with 54 required at the start of the last five overs and it was cranked up still more as Munro holed out to long-on.The loss of the big-hitting left-hander in a tight over from Jordan Thompson turned out to be a crucial scalp for the Vikings, with every subsequent dot ball turning the screw on Outlaws, who suffered another blow when Montgomery hit Mike straight to extra cover, although with 26 still needed from just eight balls the game by then was effectively won.

Sky reporter: Arsenal hold talks to sign 53 career goal "monster" for free

Arsenal have held talks to sign a high-profile “monster” in a free transfer for manager Mikel Arteta, according to one reliable reporter.

Arteta “disappointed” after Arsenal failed to make a signing in January

The Gunners’ failure to bring in a new face during the January transfer window has come back to haunt them, with a number of injuries in attack leaving Arsenal without a recognised striker.

Kai Havertz’s hamstring injury during a warm-weather training camp in Dubai has left him on the sidelines alongside Gabriel Jesus, leaving Arteta to use Mikel Merino as a makeshift centre-forward.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta

Talking after the January transfer window, Arteta said: “We had a clear intention which is always there is a window open to explore the opportunities to improve our squad with players that can impact it.

“We haven’t achieved it so we are disappointed in that sense but as well we are very aware that we only want to bring certain kinds of players and we have to be very disciplined with that and I think we will.”

Ian Wright says £6m a year star Arteta desperately wants may reject Arsenal

According to Arsenal’s former striker, they could be set to miss out on their star signing.

Feb 27, 2025

The summer can’t come soon enough for the Gunners to bolster their squad, with a new attacker surely at the top of the Emirates wishlist.

However, as well as a striker, a versatile midfielder is also of interest, with Arsenal recently making concrete moves to secure his services.

Arsenal hold talks to sign Joshua Kimmich

According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, Arsenal have now held talks to sign Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich, who is out of contract at the Allianz Arena at the end of the season.

The Gunners have a concrete interest in the Germany international, who could end up replacing Jorginho, however, Kimmich has more than one offer from abroad.

“For several days, Arsenal FC have been one of the clubs with a concrete interest in Joshua Kimmich and have held talks.

“Gunners would like to sign him on a free transfer as a possible replacement for Jorginho. Kimmich now has received two written offers from abroad. One from the Premier League. That’s the main reason why he is hesitating to sign a new deal with Bayern at least until 2028 and a salary of €20-22m gross/year.

“Kimmich has informed Bayern about the offers. But from Kimmich’s camp, it is said that discussions with Eberl/Freund are still ongoing. For Kimmich an agreement on a new contract remains possible and Bayern are ready to negotiate again, but now only willing to pay the same amount or less.”

Although Kimmich isn’t the striker Arsenal desperately need, he could still be an extremely shrewd signing on a free transfer. Dubbed a “monster” when linked with Liverpool, Kimmich can play as a midfielder, full-back or as a makeshift centre-back if required.

He has 53 career goals under his belt, and his versatility was praised by Jose Mourinho, who even believes Kimmich could play as a No. 10.

“I see him as a top right-back, left-back, centre-back, No.6, No.8, No.10. He has the qualities to be anything! I think he looks to me, very intelligent related to football, very intelligent, understands the moments of the games and understands the difference between positions and understands what he has to do here and what he has to do there.
