Khushi last-ball six keeps Essex last-eight hopes alive

Pepper, Lawrence hit rapid fifties but Eagles still need favour from Somerset in late game

ECB Reporters Network02-Jul-2023Feroze Khushi hit the last ball of the match for six, despite Chris Jordan trying to flick a catch back to Jamie Overton as he went over the boundary rope, as Essex dramatically gave themselves a chance of clinching a Vitality Blast quarter-final place.Their progression was confirmed later in the day when Somerset held off Kent at Taunton, giving extra significance to Khushi’s 35 not out from 26 balls, which ensured they did not waste an Essex T20 record stand between Michael Pepper and Dan Lawrence as they chased down Surrey’s 195 for 6 to win by three wickets in a thrilling finish.Khushi and Shane Snater had taken five singles from the first five balls of Sean Abbott’s final over, to leave Essex needing three to win from the last delivery. Khushi swung hard and high, Jordan sprinted round from long-on to grab the ball as his momentum took him over the ropes but Surrey’s captain could not throw it back infield for Overton to complete the catch – and Essex celebrated.Pepper and Lawrence certainly deserved to be on the winning side, smashing 140 for the second wicket from just 11 overs in a blitz of boundaries that featured nine sixes and 11 fours.Sunil Narine had earlier blasted six sixes and seven fours in a 38-ball unbeaten 78 but then both Pepper and Lawrence produced hitting of similar ferocity to score 75 from 39 balls and 58 off 32 balls respectively.By the 10-over mark Essex were totally in control at 130 for 1 as Pepper, who struck five sixes and six fours, and Lawrence, with four sixes and five fours, entertained a 15,000 crowd in exhilarating fashion.Surrey’s bowlers looked incapable of stopping the carnage, and even West Indies mystery spinner Narine – one of the best T20 bowlers in world cricket – conceded 19 from his first over, the eighth of the innings, as Pepper reverse-swept and straight-drove him for sixes and also swept him conventionally for four.Lawrence, who has signed to play for Surrey from next April, reached his fifty from 26 balls to Pepper’s 24 and launched Narine for one final six from the first ball of the 12th over before falling two balls later to a catch at long-off.But Pepper fell attacking Jordan in the next over, and Surrey fought back as Paul Walter, Matt Critchley – brilliantly run out by Jason Roy – Daniel Sams, who did swing Sam Curran for six, and Simon Harmer all fell cheaply while Khushi kept chipping away at the runs required. Twenty off three overs finally became eight off the last over – and the 24-year-old Khushi, at the last, prevailed.Narine also struck seven fours in his own superb exhibition of clean hitting while Roy made 28 from 24 balls on his return to action after almost two months on the sidelines with a calf injury.Surrey were 57 for 2 after the six-over powerplay, after Essex had chosen to field, with Roy clubbing Sam Cook for a six and two fours – the first an extraordinary scoop past short fine leg – in the fifth over.Laurie Evans went cheaply, flicking Aaron Beard to deep square leg, but Will Jacks drove the same bowler high and wide of mid-off for four and pulled him for six before being yorked by Cook for 23.Sam Curran fell to Harmer for only 3 but Narine warmed to his task by smearing the offspinner over the deep midwicket ropes and then lofting Snater straight for another six.Overton took two sixes in an over off Sams during a quickfire 23, before being caught in the deep, and Narine went on his merry way by thumping Walter’s left-arm seamers straight into the Pavilion and then over wide long-on into the Bedser Stand.Narine finished the innings in style by hitting Sams over the long-on boundary and then clipping the last ball of the 20th over off his stumps to the fine leg ropes.Essex’s reply began badly with Adam Rossington mishitting Sam Curran to mid-on but the England allrounder’s next over, the third of the innings, went for a remarkable 31 runs as Pepper began and ended it with sixes and took two fours besides. With a wide, two free hit no-balls and a Lawrence boundary thrown in, the Eagles were suddenly 41 for 1 after just three overs and flying.Gus Atkinson was then struck for two straight sixes by Lawrence, the second of them from a full toss no ball, as both he and Pepper did as they pleased with the Surrey attack.

Robbie Williams named FIFA Music Ambassador for Club World Cup 2025 with new anthem 'Desire'

The pop superstar has been appointed as the official FIFA Music Ambassador ahead of the 2025 Club World Cup, with him creating a new official anthem

Williams collaborated with longtime musical partners on the FIFA anthem"Desire" will debut at Club World Cup opening match on June 14New anthem represents first major appointment in Williams' FIFA ambassadorial roleWatch every FIFA Club World Cup game free on DAZNStream nowGetty Images EntertainmentWHAT HAPPENED?

FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced Robbie Williams as the organization's Music Ambassador during a video call with the British singer-songwriter. During this first official engagement in his new role, Williams revealed he has written and recorded "Desire," a new track created specifically to serve as the official FIFA anthem for all future tournaments. The song was created alongside his frequent collaborators Karl Brazil and Owen Parker, with additional input from Erik Jan Grob.

“Music and football bring people together like nothing else – each with their own universal language of connection, spirit and community,” Robbie Williams told FIFA. “When those worlds come together, there’s nothing like it – and I’m beyond honoured to be FIFA’s Music Ambassador. Football and music have both been part of my life for as long as I can remember, so this means a lot to me on a personal level.

He added, “I’ve grown up watching the walk-outs, the anthems, the drama – so writing and recording the official FIFA anthem is a real privilege. I wanted to create something that captures all of it – the passion, the nerves, the pride and the majesty of that feeling just before kick-off. Football and music have always meant the world to me and bringing them together on this kind of stage gives me goosebumps."

Williams also revealed Laura Pausini is a collaborator on the song.

“I know I’ll get to perform this song at some of my favourite tournaments in the coming years, which fills me with excitement. It’s a real honour that Laura Pausini accepted my invitation to feature on the song – she’s an incredible artist with the perfect voice.”

AdvertisementWHAT GIANNI INFATINO SAID

"Our FIFA Music Ambassador, Robbie Williams, has created what is a fantastic, incredible, emotional and brilliant Official FIFA anthem, and to feature Laura Pausini is wonderful," FIFA President Gianni Infantino told FIFA. "Involving two incredible musicians, this great song 'Desire' is the world’s football song and having it as part of the opening ceremony of the opening match will set exactly the right tone at the beginning of the first-ever FIFA Club World Cup. This is going to be truly epic."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

FIFA's selection of Williams continues the organization's tradition of partnering with high-profile musicians to enhance its global events. The new anthem "Desire" will become part of football's soundtrack worldwide, potentially reaching billions of viewers across multiple tournaments. Williams' involvement follows his previous connections to the sport, including his Soccer Aid charity initiative that has raised millions for UNICEF through celebrity football matches.

India to play two Tests on all-format tour of South Africa in 2023-24

The WTC 2023-25 games will be played after the two teams face-off in three T20Is and three ODIs

South Africa will begin their 2023-2025 World Test Championship cycle with a two-Test series against India at home later this year. The Tests will take place over the traditional Boxing Day and New Year period, at SuperSport Park and Newlands respectively. The New Year’s Test returns to Cape Town after a four-year absence following the Covid-19 pandemic and South Africa playing in Australia over last year’s festive season. The Tests will be South Africa’s first since beating West Indies 2-0 at home in March this year, and the second of India’s WTC campaign, following their ongoing matches in the West Indies. The Tests will come at the end of a tour that will begin with three T20Is, and will also include three ODIs.The last time India travelled to South Africa to play Test cricket was in the previous WTC cycle, from late December 2021 to early January 2022. India won the first Test in Centurion by 113 runs, but lost the next two, in Johannesburg and in Cape Town, by identical margins of seven wickets. That, however, didn’t prevent India from making the WTC final, where they lost to Australia. South Africa, meanwhile, finished third on the table, narrowly missing out on qualifying for the final.South Africa’s big five venues – Kingsmead, St George’s Park, the Wanderers, SuperSport Park and Newlands – along with Paarl’s Boland Park will all get a taste of the action but there are no matches planned in the country’s central region, which includes Bloemfontein and Kimberley. Durban, where a significant proportion of the Indian diaspora in South Africa is based, will only host one match, the first T20I.”This is an important tour for both teams and I am really pleased that we will have a full tour comprising all three formats of the game,” Lawson Naidoo, CSA chair, said in a statement. “The tour also allows us to showcase the best of South Africa and we have spread out matches across the nation.””The Boxing Day Test and the New Year Test are amongst the most important fixtures on the international cricket calendar and the schedule has been planned particularly around these marquee dates,” Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, said. The India series will be the only men’s international cricket played in South Africa in the 2023-24 summer – South Africa host Australia for three T20Is and five ODIs in August-September – and will be followed immediately by the SA20. In mid-February, South Africa are due to travel to New Zealand for two Tests before a mid-year series in the Caribbean. South Africa will only play two-Test series for the duration of the 2023-2025 WTC cycle, with their next three Test series set for October 2026, when they host Australia.

Matthew Fisher, Ben Coad put Sussex under pressure

New-ball duo Matthew Fisher and Ben Coad helped Yorkshire make the absolute most of only 42 overs of play possible on a rainy day one at Headingley as they restricted promotion-chasing Sussex to 120 for 6.Sussex, third in Division Two with eight draws and a win, are one of only two unbeaten sides in either division of the LV= Insurance County Championship this season – Glamorgan the other. But they were put under intense early pressure after surprisingly electing to bat first under a cloudy sky and on a green-tinged pitch.Seamers Fisher and Coad shone with 4 for 53 from 13 overs and 2 for 10 from 12 respectively during a day including a pair of two-hour plus rain delays. After electing to bat, Sussex captain Tom Alsop top-scored with 35, while 54 overs were not bowled. One of Yorkshire’s major issues over the past season-and-a-half of four-day cricket – they were relegated last September – has been the lack of matches Coad and Fisher have played. With them fit and firing, the county look a completely different proposition.Yorkshire have only won twice since the start of 2022, and this is only Coad’s 11th Championship appearance and Fisher’s ninth in that time. They have only played together on six occasions in that period but complement each other superbly. While Coad is not blessed with the pace that Fisher has, he will find any ounce of help off the pitch or through the air to trouble batters – and that’s exactly what they did.An all-Tom opening partnership of Clark and Haines was removed as Sussex slipped to 18 for 3 inside six overs, including Fisher’s wickets with successive deliveries.Coad made the initial breakthrough by getting Clark caught at second slip by Adam Lyth, leaving the score at 6 for 1 in the third over.England fringe quick Fisher then had the other left-handed opener Haines caught behind by Jonny Tattersall before bowling James Coles first ball. He played expansively at an in-ducker, leaving the Hove county 18 for 3 in the sixth over.A two-and-a-quarter-hour rain delay, including lunch, then came from 11.55am before Coad and Fisher struck once more apiece prior to the rain returning at 3.20pm, resulting in another two-and-a-half-hour break.Coad forced Oli Carter to inside-edge a drive onto his stumps before Danial Ibrahim feathered a forward defensive shot against Fisher behind as the score fell to 57 for 5 in the 25th over.Sussex captain Alsop batted with a decent slice of fortune in his 96-ball 35, which came to an end late in the day when he edged Fisher shoulder-high to Ryan Rickelton at third slip. The first five of the left-hander’s six boundaries were scored behind the wicket, including his first which was inside-edged just past his off-stump off Fisher.Sussex were at least boosted late in the day by Fynn Hudson-Prentice and Australian overseas seamer Nathan McAndrew, who shared an unbroken 44 for the seventh wicket.Hudson-Prentice looked the most assured Sussex batter on show with 29 not out and McAndrew was strong on the pull and cut in hitting six boundaries in an unbeaten 25.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The ex-City striker told BestBettingSites.com that Mateta would be a great fit for any top side in need of a striker, which, in his opinion is every team in the division bar Manchester City with Erling Haaland, and Newcastle with Alexander Isak. Dickov praised Mateta's ability to "get himself in the box", and described the Frenchman as a "real danger". The pull of European football would be enough to turn Mateta's head according to Dickov, who also suggested Palace's potential exclusion from the Europa League due to multi-club ownership rules might compel them to accept offers for their star striker,

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Dickov name checked Arsenal and Manchester United as two sides that are in desperate need of a no.9. The two clubs are believed to be pursuing a deal for Sporting Lisbon's star man, Viktor Gyokeres.

  • WHAT PAUL DICKOV SAID

Dickov said: "Anybody that's not playing in Europe, particularly in the Champions League, would love to go to a Champions League club.

"I think Mateta surprised everybody with his performances and his goals, especially last season and the season before. He's a real handful. We talk about the need for a real No. 9 at Arsenal or Manchester United.

"I think he'd be a great fit for any of the teams that are on the lookout for a striker like that because he's big, strong, and he holds the ball up ever so well. He gets himself in the box, you know. And there's a real danger when he gets in there.

"It seems that everyone apart from Man City with Haaland, and Newcastle with Isak, are on the hunt for a No. 9. I think Mateta would be a great signing for anyone.

"I think there'll be a lot of clubs looking at what's happening with them given the situation Crystal Palace find themselves in. I think European football – or its absence – is going to have a huge effect on which players Palace can keep, who wants to stay, and who are going to want to leave. Maybe, even, who will have to be sold for financial reasons."

    WHAT NEXT FOR JEAN-PHILIPPE MATETA?

Everyone affiliated with the Selhurst Park will be holding their breath until their fate is handed down. Should UEFA decide Palace cannot take part in the Europa League next season, a move for Mateta becomes evermore likely.

The next McTominay: Amorim must unleash "superb" 18-year-old Man Utd star

Given the volume of spending over the last couple of years, cuts have been made behind the scenes and to the playing squad of Manchester United over recent months.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has wasted no time in trimming costs to avoid any financial issues at Old Trafford, with numerous players leaving the North West throughout the campaign to generate funds and clear the wage bill.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka departed in a £15m deal to join West Ham United in the summer, ending his five-year stint with the Red Devils after joining from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2019.

However, his move has enabled the 27-year-old to recapture his best form away from the North West, notching two goals and two assists in the Premier League throughout 2024/25.

He’s not the only former United player to depart this season and impress away from the club, with huge regrets undoubtedly over a decision to allow him to depart given his rise to stardom elsewhere.

Scott McTominay’s stats for Napoli in 2024/25

Back in August last year, United decided to sell midfielder Scott McTominay to Italian side Napoli, leaving the side after seven years in the first-team and recruiting a £25m fee in the process.

The Scottish international made over 250 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring on 29 occasions, catching the eye with his box-crashing ability, often producing numerous key goals.

However, his move to Naples has allowed the 28-year-old to take his game to the next level, registering seven goals and two assists in his first 28 appearances for the Italian giants.

Antonio Conte’s side currently sit in second place, just three points off leaders Inter Milan, with McTominay playing a key role in their chances of claiming the Scudetto at the end of the season.

Given his goalscoring run in Serie A, Ruben Amorim must wish the previous management team had kept hold of the Scottish international, but he could unleash his own version of the star in the near future.

The player who could be Amorim’s own McTominay

Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi have been just two of the United youngsters who have been the beneficiaries of the ongoing injury issues at Old Trafford, making the jump into the first-team.

Their positive performances have certainly opened the doors for other youngsters to follow suit in the near future, looking to cement their place in Amorim’s squad.

One player who’s more than deserving of the opportunity is midfielder Zach Baumann, who could follow in the footsteps of McTominay with the 18-year-old possessing a very similar skillset to the Scottish international.

The Ukrainian youngster has developed rapidly over the last couple of years, earning himself a professional contract at Old Trafford, highlighting his impressive displays at various youth levels.

This season alone, the “superb” Baumann, as dubbed by one analyst, the teenager has registered 11 appearances in all competitions, including one in the UEFA Youth League.

He’s capable of operating in either an attacking or defensive midfield role, similar to that of McTominay, but he’s also showcased his ability to be in key positions in the final third, allowing him to find the back of the net.

Baumann has been a regular in the U18 side, notching two goal contributions in his seven appearances, helping the Red Devils youngsters sit second, just a couple of points off rivals Manchester City.

Given the sale of McTominay in the summer, the first team have been desperate for a player of a similar profile to replace him, offering that added threat in the final third despite mainly being a box-to-box option.

Baumann may only be 18, but should he continue on his current trajectory, he could easily force himself into Amorim’s plans, potentially saving the club millions in the years ahead.

Man Utd gem was ahead of Amad, then Ten Hag sold him for just £5m

One Manchester United star unfortunately never managed to maintain his early impressive form at the club.

Cummins targets comeback in India ODIs ahead of World Cup

The captain suffered a fractured wrist in the final Ashes Test and will likely miss the ODIs in South Africa

Pat Cummins: Mitchell Marsh is a ‘real leader’

Pat Cummins is targeting a return in the ODIs against India in late September ahead of the World Cup as he recovers from the fractured wrist he suffered in the final Ashes Test at The Oval.Cummins, Australia’s ODI captain, picked up the injury on the opening day of the Test but the severity of it was only confirmed after the match. He has since been wearing a cast on his left wrist with a recovery time of around six weeks. That would take him up to around mid-September and he will fly out to South Africa for the ODI leg of that tour with five games between September 7 and 17, but the three matches in India immediately before the World Cup appear a more realistic return date.Related

Cummins set to be fit for ODI World Cup despite wrist fracture

“It’s not too bad,” Cummins said. “I’ll head over to South Africa at the backend of that leg, but probably more those one-dayers ahead of the World Cup. Another few weeks and I’ll be right.”It hurt day one when I did it and hurt a lot when I was batting but didn’t think it was too bad. With each day it got a bit sorer, so knew it was probably bone as opposed to muscle.”Cummins was named as Aaron Finch’s successor for the ODI captaincy last year but has only led Australia in two of the team’s six matches since then. He missed one game against England when Josh Hazlewood stepped in then all three in India following the death of his mother, as Steven Smith took over.Pat Cummins is not expected to carry on as Australia’s ODI captain beyond the World Cup•Getty Images

Cummins, speaking at a partnership announcement between Cricket Australia and HCLTech, endorsed Mitchell Marsh, the new T20I captain, as the logical option to lead the ODI side against South Africa in his absence although said there could well be a rotation of the role if players’ workloads are managed ahead of the World Cup.”The captaincy for the ODIs we’ve kind of shared around a little bit,” he said. “We’ll get over there, have a look at that. The good thing is we have a few options. [Mitch] is probably the most obvious one if he’s doing the T20s as well.”Wouldn’t be surprised as well with the amount of ODIs before the World Cup that some guys might miss a game. If Mitch misses one, someone else might step up.”Cummins termed Marsh “a real leader” and believes he will be an excellent fit for the T20I team. Although he is currently appointed only for the three matches in South Africa, he is now the favourite to take the role fulltime ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA.He will also be a frontrunner for the ODI job in the future with Cummins only expected to keep that captaincy until the conclusion of the upcoming World Cup in India.”He’s always been a huge member of the team. A real leader,” Cummins said. “Probably in the last few years it’s been his body that’s got in the way at times. What made that Headingley hundred so special wasn’t just getting himself back in the team, he had surgery, got told he might not be able to bowl again, but worked so hard over the last 12 months to give himself another shot at red-ball cricket. We were just all so happy for him.”And off the field think he’s just a great people person. His energy is infectious, he’s great to hang around with, always good fun. Just gets the temperature of the room right more than anyone else. He’s going to be great for that T20 squad.”
