Beaumont: 'We have to protect 50-over cricket at all costs'

‘I just hope other formats outside of T20 aren’t left behind,’ says England Test and ODI opener

Valkerie Baynes05-Dec-2023Tammy Beaumont has made an impassioned plea to preserve the ODI format as a cornerstone of women’s cricket, amid the explosion of T20 franchises and a push by a handful of top-ranked nations to play more Tests.Speaking to ESPNcricinfo on the eve of England’s three-match T20I series and four-day Test against India in Mumbai – and just a fortnight after the men’s 50-over World Cup ended, igniting debate over whether the format was on the brink of extinction – Beaumont said it was crucial for the women’s game to nurture all three versions of the international game.”The more the game goes on, I think the more it’ll diversify and there’s more talent in every country, so now you can almost field very different teams depending on the format,” Beaumont told the podcast on Tuesday. “I just hope that other formats outside of T20 aren’t left behind because that’s a real issue that has happened in the men’s game.Related

New Test dawn for India, but focus firmly on road to T20 World Cup

“One of the few good things about the women’s game, being quite a long way behind the men’s game still, is that we can learn from the mistakes of the men’s game. The WPL and all the franchise leagues, and the investment, and the amount of money that has come into the women’s game are absolutely amazing and some might say overdue, but also I think we need to protect where the game’s come from.”We see the men’s game talking about 50-over cricket: ‘is it even worth doing?’ Well, if only four nations are playing Test cricket in women’s cricket, then we have to protect 50-over cricket at all costs.”I think everyone would love to have loads of Test-playing nations and play big Test series but, at the moment, that’s not a reality. At the same time, if you’re just a Test match player and you play two Tests a year, you’re not playing much cricket. Hopefully we can keep and protect all formats of cricket and not just jump on the wave of T20 and leave everything else behind.”Beaumont hasn’t played a T20I in nearly two years, having lost her place following the 2022 Women’s Ashes in Australia as then-head coach Lisa Keightley plumped for a more youthful squad, ahead of England’s failed home Commonwealth Games campaign later that year. And while current head coach Jon Lewis has said the door is not shut on Beaumont’s T20I career, she remains out of that squad in India, despite setting this year’s Hundred alight with a 61-ball 118, the competition’s highest score across genders, en route to becoming the season’s second-highest run-scorer in the Women’s competition. In Danni Wyatt, Sophia Dunkley, Alice Capsey, Maia Bouchier and captain Heather Knight, England have a wealth of top-order batting options and, while Beaumont is a mainstay as ODI opener and automatic pick for the December 14-17 Test following her double-century against Australia in June, breaking back into the shortest format has proved extremely difficult. But her desire to promote the 50-over format feels less motivated by her personal circumstances than from her broader perspective as a broadcaster, having branched into that field while still playing. She regularly commentates on England Women’s internationals she is not involved in, as well as Hundred games, and has covered some England Men’s fixtures too.”If we’re going to say teams want to play Test matches, we want to push it in the women’s game, but realistically at the moment the money-maker is T20, and T20 franchise cricket in particular. You can’t go from T20 cricket to Test match cricket, it’s so different,” she added. “The only thing that is a bridge between the two is 50-over cricket.”England, Australia, India can afford to put on Test matches, that maybe people aren’t coming to yet, and invest in the marketing and put an event on for four or five days. Other cricket boards can’t afford that. A 50-over game they can do, they can invest in it and see the game grow and then, when they might be ready to take on Test cricket, players know how to potentially build an innings.”Not an innings over six hours, over two days or whatever, but a longer innings, whereas T20 is only going to go one way, where you’ve got to go at a strike-rate of 150-plus from the off. There’s definitely room for all three, and the Hundred in my opinion… but we’ve got to work with all three formats at the moment across the globe and protect all of them.”

“I’ve said to the girls, if I do say something on air that you don’t agree with, just come and talk to me because I would never want that to jeopardise anything at all.”Tammy Beaumont

Beaumont admits, however, that Women’s internationals have posed the toughest challenge of her commentating career, not least during England’s 2-1 T20I home series defeat to Sri Lanka, after they had beaten Australia in both white-ball legs of the drawn Ashes. Then, the inevitable noise swirled around whether she should be back in the T20I side.”It’s probably the most difficult thing, but I think it’s about having quite clear principles in what I want to be as a commentator,” she said. “Sharing a dressing-room with the players, my key principle is if I wouldn’t go and say it to their face, I don’t say it on air because at the end of the day their parents are watching, their family’s watching at home, friends. Anything you do say, if it’s overly critical or overly harsh and you wouldn’t say it to their face, they’re going to find out.”I’ve said to the girls, if I do say something on air that you don’t agree with, just come and talk to me because I would never want that to jeopardise anything at all. But at the same time, I am outside the T20 squad. It only takes an absolute gun opening batter to come along and I’d probably be out of the ODI side squad as well at some point. So I’ve got to think about the future.”Not that she doesn’t harbour ambitions to return to the shortest format at international level, where she is stranded on 99 T20I caps.”That’s up to the selectors,” she said. “They’ve got a good idea of what their World Cup team might look like and you’ve just got to keep putting your hand up and churn out runs and put in match-winning performances.”At the same time, you can’t control everything. There’s so many good T20 players in England now, particularly opening the batting. Everyone’s putting their hand up to try and have a go in the powerplay. If I got an opportunity it would be amazing but at the same time, just keep going.”

Strikers and Heat promise mouthwatering WBBL final amid bid for record crowd

There has been some chirping between the teams in recent seasons, but it will come down to skills on the field

Big picture: Heat’s power verses Strikers’ economyAdelaide Strikers will aim for back-to-back WBBL titles in front of what they hope will be a record crowd when they face Brisbane Heat at Adelaide Oval.In recent times, there has been a bit of needle between the teams, with Megan Schutt last year branding Heat’s style of cricket a “bit arrogant” ahead of the Challenger final, which Strikers won, but this will be a fascinating match-up even away from chirping. This year’s final pits together the team with the highest batting run rate (Heat at 8.42) and the side with the most frugal economy (Strikers at 6.47).Related

Strikes have been, without doubt, the team of the regular season, stringing together 11 victories to leave daylight to second place. Heat, meanwhile, had to reach the final the hard way after three defeats towards the end of the round-robin phase. However, in the space of 24 hours, they produced two superb performances to overturn Sydney Thunder and Perth Scorchers in the qualifying finals.Four Heat batters have more than 300 runs for the season and they have arguably the biggest X-factor player of the competition in Grace Harris, who holds a strike rate of 171.12. Jess Jonassen has once again led the way with the ball as part of a strong spin attack alongside Amelia Kerr, breakout star Charli Knott and Georgia Voll.Strikers’ batting has been underpinned by Katie Mack with 449 runs – interestingly compiled without a single six. In a timely run to the finals, Laura Wolvaardt, crucially available before taking up the South Africa captaincy, has found close to her best form.Their bowling attack is varied with the dual legspin of Amanda-Jade Wellington and Anesu Mushangwe having been a key part of it. In a sign of the team’s consistency, they have only used 13 players through the regular season. A legacy beckons if they can win on Saturday.Form guide

In the spotlight: Darcie Brown and Grace HarrisA hamstring injury picked up against West Indies put paid to the majority of Darcie Brown’s season, but she has had an impact on her return with four wickets in two games including a Player-of-the-Match 3 for 18 against Scorchers to secure a home final. “I’m maybe five or so metres back further than any of our other bowlers,” Bridget Patterson told ESPNcricinfo about keeping to Brown. “On Adelaide Oval, it felt quick for sure, I was probably a couple of metres off the ring. Darcie’s been a great inclusion. I’m glad we’ve had her for the important games at the end of the season.”It won’t always come off, but Grace Harris is the type of player who can win a final off her own bat. She had a huge impact in the qualifying finals with scores of 45 and 54 having been somewhat up and down following her record-breaking 136 off 59 balls at North Sydney Oval early in the season. “I’m a strike-rate batter… [aim to] strike at 180-200,” she said after the Challenger final. “You will be inconsistent, but happy to own that role. We want to play an aggressive brand of cricket. It’s about scoring shots and not getting worried about getting out.”Team news: England players absentWhile Strikers have Wolvaardt, England allrounder Dani Gibson has left for their tour of India, which could be a significant hole in the middle order. Gibson struck at 147.43 with the bat and claimed ten wickets. Brown, who was rested for the final regular-season game, will come back in although that leaves a longer tail.Adelaide Strikers (probable): 1 Katie Mack, 2 Laura Wolvaardt, 3 Tahlia McGrath (capt), 4 Bridget Patterson (wk) 5 Madeline Penna, 6 Georgia Adams, 7 Jemma Barsby, 8 Amanda-Jade Wellington, 9 Darcie Brown, 10 Megan Schutt, 11 Anesu MushangweAmelia Kerr is available for Heat before heading back to New Zealand for international duty, but like Strikers, they have lost England batter Bess Heath. Mikayla Hinkley will be the likely replacement.Brisbane Heat (probable): 1 Georgia Redmayne (wk), 2 Grace Harris, 3 Amelia Kerr, 4 Mignon du Preez, 5 Laura Harris, 6 Charli Knott, 7 Mikayla Hinkley, 8 Jess Jonassen (capt), 9 Georgia Voll, 10 Nicola Hancock, 11 Courtney SippelPitch and conditionsAdelaide Oval usually produces good pitches for T20s. The scores weren’t huge during the stadium round last week with Heat’s 160 for 8 against Thunder the highest. Scorchers were bundled out for 104 by Strikers. The forecast is for a mild day although it will be cooler by the evening.Stats and trivia Laura Harris has the highest batting strike-rate of the season of 220.00. Beyond Lauren Bell (who faced two balls), her sister, Grace, is next at 171.12 Bridget Patterson is one stumping away from equalling the WBBL season record of 13 Brisbane Heat have been in finals for six consecutive seasons and were back-to-back champions in 2018-19 and 2019-2020Quotes”Every time we play each other it comes down to the wire. I’ve seen a lot of… they’ve got the best batting attack and we’ve got the best bowling attack and we are excited for the challenge. There’s a bit of extra spice but it’s all fun and games.”
“We do have the confidence and if that’s perceived as something else then so be it. We back the style of play that we have, we believe in that, and ultimately that’s what it comes down to, we are really clear as a team what we are about.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Madrid are of the opinion that Endrick, who turns 19 this month, will remain on the periphery under Alonso, much like he was under previous manager Carlo Ancelotti. The Brazilian had to miss the first couple weeks of the Club World Cup in the United States as he was recovering from an injury. In his absence, academy starlet Gonzalo Garcia has started every single game and has been the find of the tournament, scoring joint-most four goals and an assist in five games. With Garcia, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Franco Mastantuono, who is yet to join the club, Madrid believe that Endrick will remain at the lower end of Alonso's pecking order next season. In such circumstances, the 15-time European champions are planning to send the teenage striker on loan.

The report revealed that clubs from Germany and France, who had previously shown interest in taking Endrick on loan, have once again reignited their pursuit of the former Palmeiras sensation's signature.

    WHAT NEXT FOR ENDRICK?

According to reports from Spain, Endrick held a meeting with Madrid chief Jose Angel Sanchez in the USA to discuss his future. It is expected that a decision on his future will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Henriques 'struggling to comprehend' Tom Curran's four-match BBL ban

Sydney Sixers captain Moises Henriques said his team-mate, England allrounder Tom Curran, was grappling with an “assassination” of his character after being handed a four-match ban for allegedly intimidating an umpire, even as BBL authorities faced the difficult task of organising a hearing for the appeal.Curran was charged with a Level 3 offence under Cricket Australia’s code of conduct for a pre-match incident, where he almost ran into reserve umpire Muhammad Qureshi before Sixers’ game against Hobart Hurricanes on December 11 in Launceston. Footage of the incident was released by broadcaster Channel Seven on Thursday night, leading to widespread condemnation of Curran’s actions. But Henriques, who said he had witnessed the incident, defended Curran.”I didn’t [think much of it at the time]. I don’t think anyone else did,” he told Fox Sports before Sixers’ match against Adelaide Strikers on Friday. “I’ve seen the ten-second clip; it doesn’t look great but… you can’t quite understand the context there either. There was a bit of communication before and after, that probably hasn’t been released either.”I’ve known Tom for a long time, played with him at Surrey, he’s been a big part of the Sixers for a long time. He’s a great man, he’s a real leader in the community, he’s a leader among our team. I’m still struggling to comprehend that sort of penalty for what he’s done.”

The footage shows Curran completing a practice run-up and running on part of the pitch during the warm-up, before being verbally instructed by the umpire not to do so again. Curran then moved to the opposite end of the pitch to complete another practice run-up and almost collided with the umpire, who had taken position next to the stumps in an attempt to block him.Henriques said the incident and the subsequent ban had taken its toll on Curran.”It’s been a pretty tough time for TC – the last 11 days – sitting on this and knowing what he’s like,” he said. “He’s taken it to heart; he’s really worried about the assassination of the character there. It’s a big claim. I’m wishing him the best.”Sixers will appeal the sanction, but it does carry a risk as it is within the appeal commissioner’s remit to increase the punishment. The four-match ban is significant in a shortened BBL regular season, where teams play ten matches each.Curran is slated to play only in the regular season before flying to the UAE for the ILT20. There will be pressure on BBL authorities to quickly hear the appeal, with Christmas imminent. Sixers play Melbourne Stars on Boxing Day, with Curran’s current ban also covering their matches against Sydney Thunder and Brisbane Heat.”It took ten days to get a hearing in the first place, which is very unusual anyway,” Henriques said. “We’re definitely going to appeal. All of the players and all of our staff are behind him.”Meanwhile, CA chief executive Nick Hockley urged players to respect umpires and match officials.”I think that those processes are in place for good reason, and my overarching message [is] to everybody – and this is not just at the elite level, but [also] at the community level where many of the umpires and officials give their time as volunteers,” he said. “Respect is fundamental to the spirit of cricket, and it’s fundamental to the laws of the game. Players are role models in society, and it’s really important they show respect.”

Ibrahim's maiden hundred leads Afghanistan's fightback

Afghanistan have nine wickets left as they seek to wipe out the 42 runs remaining in their deficit

Afghanistan came surging back into the Test on day three, first polishing off the Sri Lanka tail quickly, before Ibrahim Zadran put up big stands with Noor Ali Zadran and Rahmat Shah, as he completed a valiant maiden Test century.Ibrahim and Shah remained unbeaten at the close, which means Afghanistan have nine wickets left as they seek to wipe out the 42 runs remaining in their deficit, and establish a lead that will test Sri Lanka. The surface had not yet begun to take ripping turn, and remained excellent for batting. But Afghanistan do have two spinners in their attack – albeit very inexperienced – who may be able to exploit what assistance there is.Sri Lanka will rue their missed chances. Ibrahim had been on 39 when he came down the pitch to smash a Prabath Jayasuriya delivery straight back to the bowler, who let it burst through his fingers and on to the boundary for four. The easier of the chances came to Nishan Madushka at short mid on when Ibrahim was on 63. This was again struck hard, but at a catchable height near his head. He got his hands up, but couldn’t quite wrap his fingers around the ball.Related

Chamika Gunasekara concussed out on Test debut after blow to the head

Sri Lanka’s bowlers were largely disciplined, even if they could not coax life out of a pitch that had become good for batting. Asitha Fernando was the best of them, delivering some excellent bursts of short-pitched bowling, as well as some outstanding fuller deliveries, one of which yielded the only Afghanistan wicket to fall – that of Noor, for 47.But the day belonged to Ibrahim. He had his outside edge occasionally beaten with the new ball and was scoreless for 14 deliveries, but once he got moving, he kept a steady tempo. His first runs were via a glance to the fine leg boundary, but early in his innings he was mostly strong in the arc between cover and mid off. Between the boundaries, which came principally off full and slightly wide deliveries, there was a substantial diet of singles all around the wicket. Ibrahim took 84 balls to get into his 30s. During his 106-run partnership with Noor, the primary goal seemed to be to bat time. The half-century came off the last over before tea, and in the evening Ibrahim consolidated. He was hitting boundaries through long on and midwicket now. Sri Lanka attempted all sorts of catching men to try and lure a mistake, but aside from that dropped chance on 63, Ibrahim found ways to progress without taking risks. He was mostly only trying to hit fours off the bad deliveries – usually ones that were overpitched. He got to his hundred – the fourth ever for Afghanistan – off the last over of the day.Asitha Fernando removed Noor Ali Zadran•AFP/Getty Images

Noor’s innings, in contrast to Ibrahim’s was troubled, but he nevertheless stuck it out for 136 deliveries and fell only three runs short of what would have been a maiden fifty on debut. He was particularly uncomfortable against Asitha’s burst of bouncers soon after lunch, but he survived it narrowly, and it would only be in the third session that Asitha would get him out, pinging him in front of leg stump with a fast, full delivery. Noor made the majority of his runs behind the wicket – a reflection, partly, of how short Sri Lanka bowled to him.Rahmat, who got to 46 off 98 before stumps, and was part of a 93-run unbeaten partnership with Ibrahim, made all but 11 of his runs on the offside. He was strong down the ground, especially, finding thre of his five boundaries there.Sri Lanka’s attack was upset by a blow to Chamika Gunasekara, who in the morning was hit on the head, seemed to suffer the effects a few overs after he was hit, and was taken off the field and to further tests in hospital. Kasun Rajitha, who replaced him as concussion substitute, was the most expensive of Sri Lanka’s bowlers on Sunday, going at 4.30 across his 10 overs. The others were more disciplined, even if only Asitha seriously threatened to take wickets through much of the day. Jayasuriya will be especially disappointed he has nothing in the wickets column after delivering 32 overs, though nine of those were maidens.Early in the day, Afghanistan had claimed three wickets for 39 to close out Sri Lanka’s first innings at 439. The most important wicket of the morning was the first – that of Sri Lanka’s last recognised batter Sadeera Smarawickrama, who edged Naveed Zadran to gully. The two next wickets were not long in falling. Naveed hit the top of Jayasuriya’s off stump before, next over, Nijat Masood bowled Asitha Fernando first ball, with Asitha having come in after Gunasekara retired hurt.Naveed’s take for the innings was 4 for 83. Masood and Qais Ahmed claimed two wickets apiece.
