Power-packed West Indies look to get past PNG – and the weather – in style

West Indies vs Papua New Guinea

Big picture – West Indies look to make early moves

Redemption will be on West Indies’ agenda as they kick off the Caribbean leg of T20 World Cup 2024 against Papua New Guinea in Providence. They lifted the trophy in 2012 and 2016, but West Indies have had a torrid time at the last two editions. In 2021, they only managed one win in five matches to make a Super 12s exit. In 2022, they failed to even make it to the Super 12s, losing to Ireland and Scotland in the opening round. Now, in home territory, with a team in form, West Indies will hope to return to their glory days. PNG might not appear as threatening as some of the other teams, but West Indies will have to start strong, even think of giving their net run-rate an early boost.Related

They are coming into the World Cup on the back of a 3-0 sweep over South Africa at home – though both teams were without many of their World Cuppers. But West Indies also beat Australia in their only warm-up game where they smashed 257 in their 20 overs. That’s good portents.Andre Russell boasts of a strike rate of 207.89 in T20s this year. He played his part in Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL title win last week. Nicholas Pooran finished as Lucknow Super Giants’ second-highest run-getter at the IPL. Rovman Powell and Shimron Hetmyer both struck at strike rates in excess of 150 for Rajasthan Royals. Against South Africa, Gudakesh Motie was the highest wicket-taker while Brandon King was the highest run-scorer.PNG, in their second appearance at the World Cup and the first since 2021, will want to make an impression, and upset some calculations. And they have the experience for it – ten of their members played in the 2021 edition; only four of their players are below 25. PNG are a pace-dominated side with only Charles Amini as a frontline spinner. But it’s the veteran batters that they will look to – Assad Vala, Tony Ura, Lega Siaka, Sese Bau are all capable of turning it on, and West Indies will be aware of that.A host nation has never won the men’s T20 World Cup, and West Indies will hope to buck the trend this time. In the spotlight – Nicholas Pooran and Charles Amini

Nicholas Pooran is coming into the tournament in fine six-hitting form. Since the start of 2023, no batter has hit more sixes in T20 cricket than Pooran’s 154. He also has a strike rate of 167.45 in T20s this year. In the IPL, where the rest of his team’s batters failed to get going, Pooran struck at 178.21 and then hit a 25-ball 75 with five fours and eight sixes against Australia two days back.Charles Amini, PNG’s primary spinner, is also a handy batter, and his all-round abilities will hold the key to his team’s fortunes. Amini has the third-most runs for PNG in T20Is – 994 in 48 innings – though with a strike rate of just 118.61. He is also their second-highest wicket-taker with 47 wickets in 48 innings.

Team news

Johnson Charles and King had an excellent series against South Africa and are likely to open in the first game with Powell, Pooran, Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford forming the middle order. Russell and Akeal Hosein are likely to be the allrounders, while the Josephs, Alzarri and Shamar, should lead the pace attack.West Indies (probable XI): 1 Johnson Charles, 2 Brandon King, 3 Nicholas Pooran (wk), 4 Rovman Powell (capt), 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Sherfane Rutherford, 7 Andre Russell, 8 Akeal Hosein, 9 Alzarri Joseph, 10 Shamar Joseph, 11 Gudakesh MotieAssad Vala and Charles Amini are among the mainstays of the PNG team•Michael Steele/ICC/Getty Images

Ura, PNG’s highest-run scorer in T20Is, will be the backbone of their batting unit along with Vala and Amini. Norman Vanua, their highest wicket-taker in the format, is expected to lead the fast-bowling unit alongside Chad Soper, while John Kariko, PNG’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is since the start of 2023, will be Amini’s spin-bowling partner.PNG (probable XI): 1 Tony Ura, 2 Sese Bau, 3 Assad Vala (capt), 4 Lega Siaka, 5 Charles Amini, 6 Hiri Hiri, 7 Kiplin Doriga (wk), 8 Norman Vanua, 9 Alei Nao, 10, John Kariko, 11 Chad Soper

  • Kariko is PNG’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is since the start of 2023 – 25 in 16 games

Pitch and conditions

The average first-innings score at Providence in T20 games since the start of 2022 is 168 with teams happier to bat second. In 24 T20 games here since 2022, captains have opted to field in 16 outings. But, it has not always translated into wins. Teams batting first have scored 11 wins out of 24 while 12 have been won by the teams batting second. One game was washed out. Spinners have been dominant here, going at an economy of 6.94 in those games. But all of that will become relevant if the weather holds up. There are chances of showers and even a thunderstorm early in the day.

Quotes

“If Andre Russell rocks up for any international team, you would definitely slot him within the team. That is no surprise to see Andre automatically slot into our team. He comes with a wealth of experience and the good thing is he comes with additional confidence on the back of good performances in the IPL. We are definitely looking forward to Andre Russell being a significant part of our World Cup and hopefully, he can be a three-time World Cup champion after this.”
“It means a lot to be playing amongst the best 20 teams in the world. We are going into games trying to win. We just don’t want to go out there and play for the sake of playing. We are here to play the best cricket we can and the brand of cricket we know we can play.”

Manchester Evening News adds that he will also miss this weekend's friendly with Fiorentina but should return for the Arsenal encounter in just over a week.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Some United fans may be concerned that Onana comes into the season undercooked after missing their games against Leeds United, Bournemouth, Everton, and West Ham. Plus, backup option Altay Bayindir has struggled in goal in the three pre-season matches he has played in. Either way, the Red Devils still have concerns over their goalkeeping situation.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The report adds that Cameroon international Onana, who has made a number of big mistakes at United following his £47.2 million ($63.5m) transfer from Inter Milan in 2023, has a good working relationship with head coach Ruben Amorim – who privately indicated he wanted to keep the 29-year-old early in the summer.

Kirstie Gordon five-for keeps flawless record for The Blaze

Sarah Bryce completes four stumpings in seven-wicket win over Thunder

ECB Reporters Network02-Jun-2024

Kirstie Gordon took a five-for•Getty Images

Kirstie Gordon took 5 for 12 and Sarah Bryce completed four stumpings as The Blaze maintained their 100% record in the Charlotte Edwards Cup with a seven-wicket victory over Thunder at Emirates Old Trafford.Slow left-armer Gordon’s fine bowling and Bryce’s sharp work behind the stumps restricted Thunder to 111 for 9 on a pitch that was being used for its fourth T20 match in as many days and this total proved to be no sort of target for a Blaze team featuring the England opener, Tammy Beaumont.Beaumont made 34 not out and overshadowed her England colleagues Kate Cross and Sophie Ecclestone as Blaze strolled home with 4.2 overs to spare.Thunder won the toss but The Blaze grabbed the initiative in the opening overs, restricting their hosts to 22 runs in the powerplay overs and taking two vital wickets.Fi Morris, the hero of Thunder’s victory over Sparks on Thursday, was caught by Teresa Graves at backward point for 1 off the seventh ball of the match and Seren Smale was smartly stumped by Bryce off her sister, Kathryn, for a 13-ball 2.Emma Lamb hit two fours but in the eighth over, she was caught at deep mid-on by Marie Kelly off Gordon for 20 and it was only taking ten runs off the tenth over that enabled Thunder to reach the midpoint of their innings on 44 for 3.Eventually, Ellie Threlkeld and Danni Collins maintained some much needed acceleration until their 43-run stand was ended by Lucy Higham in the 14th over when she had Threlkeld caught at mid-off by Gordon for 20.New batter Ailsa Lister lasted only half a dozen deliveries before she holed out to Kelly off Higham for 4 and the off-spinner took her third wicket when Collins was stumped by Sarah Bryce for a gutsy 30 when attempting a reverse sweep.Kathryn Bryce bowled the 19th over and it was the most productive of the innings as far as Thunder were concerned, 17 runs coming off it, thanks in part to a four and six by Ecclestone. The England slow left-armer put on 26 in 14 balls with Cross before Cross became Sarah Bryce’s third stumping and Gordon completed a memorable afternoon by bowling Ecclestone for 20 and having Phoebe Graham stumped first ball.By contrast with their hosts, The Blaze openers, Beaumont and Teresa Graves, encountered few problems getting the scoreboard moving and the pair had put on 50 in 6.2 overs before Graves skied Sophie Morris to Tara Norris at mid-off and departed having made 29 off 24 balls.Kathryn Bryce then added a further 36 in five overs with Beaumont and the No.3’s departure, caught at midwicket by Norris off Fi Morris for 21 did nothing to halt The Blaze’s stroll to victory. Sarah Bryce was caught at cover off Cross in what proved to be the final over of the game.

Will Enzo Maresca get his way? Chelsea see unexpected €50m bid for star Inter defender knocked back as Blues launch transfer search for Levi Colwill cover

Chelsea have been knocked back by Inter after tabling a €50 million (£43m/$58m) bid for Alessandro Bastoni as they search for cover for Levi Colwill.

According to , the Blues made a surprise approach for the Italy international, who has developed into one of the best centre-backs in world football at San Siro, but their offer fell below the Serie A giants' valuation and was predictably rejected.

Chelsea have lost central defender Colwill for most of the season after the England international suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury and Maresca has admitted he has told the club he wants another player brought in as cover. Josh Acheampong partnered Trevoh Chalobah at the back during the Blues' goalless draw with Crystal Palace on Sunday, with the likes of Wesley Fofana and new signing Jorrel Hato left unused on the bench. Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo are also currently unavailable due to fitness issues.

The summer transfer window closes on September 1 and the Blues are expected to be busy up until the deadline despite already signing the likes of Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens and Hato in recent months. They hope to force out Christopher Nkunku to make room for Xavi Simons, while Manchester United outcast Alejandro Garnacho is also pushing for a move to Stamford Bridge.

Winners and losers from around Europe's top leagues: Lamine Yamal continues to carry Barcelona while Luis Diaz enjoys dream debut for Bayern Munich – but Diego Simeone is already feeling the heat at Atletico Madrid

Not even wearing Lionel Messi's No.10 jersey fazes the teenage sensation, while there was a touching tribute to Diogo Jota in Germany

Football is returning all across Europe right now, with league play having resumed in France and Spain over the weekend, while Bayern Munich and Stuttgart met in the curtain-raising DFL-Supercup in Germany.

So, even though we're still waiting for Serie A to get back under way, the last few days have already produced a plethora of talking points. For starters, Diego Simeone is already under pressure at Atletico Madrid and things haven’t started much better for Roberto De Zerbi, who is dealing with a divided dressing room at Marseille.

On the plus side, Lamine Yamal has picked up where he left off last season at Barcelona (despite being given an iconic shirt to wear) while Paris Saint-Germain are coping impressively with their total lack of a pre-season.

Below, GOAL runs through all of the big winners and losers from the first weekend of the new season…

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Lamine Yamal's Barca

Hansi Flick is a difficult man to please. Barcelona may have kicked off their Spanish title defence with a 3-0 win at nine-man Mallorca on Saturday – and after successfully registering new signings Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford for the game in Palma – but the German was less than impressed with his players, accusing them of playing at just "50 per cent" during the second half.

"That can't happen," Flick told . "I need to talk to the team about this. These are three important points but I didn’t like the match."

Still, if some of Flick's troops switched off after the interval, Lamine Yamal most certainly did not. The teenage wing wizard, who created Raphinha's opener, kept going right until the end and was rewarded for his relentless endeavour with a late goal that made a mockery of suggestions that he might struggle with the weight of the No.10 jersey this season.

Yamal has been dealing with Lionel Messi comparisons since he first exploded onto the scene a couple of years ago and when he says that he doesn't feel any pressure to perform, he means it. Barca may not have been anywhere near their best on Saturday, but with the peerless Yamal in their team, they won't always have to be.

    LOSER: Diego Simeone

After a stunning summer spending spree, Atletico Madrid's 2024-25 campaign promised a lot but delivered very little. Consequently, coach Diego Simeone really could have done with a strong start to the new season against Espanyol on Sunday. Unfortunately for 'Cholo', Atleti lost their opening game for the first time ever under the Argentine.

As Simeone correctly pointed out afterwards, the Rojiblancos played pretty well for an hour and were well worth the lead given to them by star striker Julian Alvarez, who broke the deadlock with a sensational free-kick. However, the way in which Atleti faded the longer the game wore on brought back some bad memories from last season and left Simeone dealing with some very awkward questions in his post-match interviews, with his decision to take off both Alex Baena and Thiago Almada heavily criticised in the press.

It also didn't help either that Alvarez reacted angrily to his own withdrawal in the closing stages of the game. "It's normal for Julian to get upset by the substitution," Simeone said after the 2-1 loss in Cornella. "We all get angry, even when playing with friends. He was having a good game." Which obviously begged the question: why take him off, then?

Simeone also insisted that Atleti will learn from the shock defeat, but it's hard not to be a little concerned. They may not have spent as much money as last year, but the Rojiblancos have been very active in the transfer market again and a sustained title challenge is the least the board will expect after such a significant investment in the squad. As it stands, though, Atleti are already playing catch-up…

  • AFP

    WINNER: Paris Saint-Germain

There's no hiding the fact that Paris Saint-Germain didn't play particularly well in last week's UEFA Super Cup clash with Tottenham – and they weren't much better against Nantes on Sunday. In both instances, Luis Enrique's side looked like a team struggling to get back up to speed after a gruelling 2024-25 campaign that only came to an end in July – and that's wholly understandable.

PSG didn't have anything resembling proper preparation for the new season. They're essentially having to boost their fitness levels in competitive games, which is far from ideal, and yet PSG are still finding ways to win.

After scraping past Spurs on penalties, they won their Ligue 1 opener thanks to a second-half goal from Vitinha. So, given he felt compelled to start key players such as Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on the bench, Luis Enrique was understandably delighted with the three points picked up at the Stade de la Beaujoire.

"If we want to have the chance to win everything, we need all the players," said the Spaniard, who was particularly pleased with the performance of debutant Illia Zabarnyi. "At the moment, I think being able to play with many different players is important, as is improving in terms of fitness."

Just like last term, then, it feels like PSG are only going to get stronger the longer the season goes on.

    LOSER: Roberto De Zerbi

Second-placed Marseille finished 19 points behind PSG in Ligue 1 last season, but the feeling was that Roberto De Zerbi's improving side might get a lot closer to the perennial French champions this time around.

After just one round of play, though, OM are in turmoil, after a dismal 1-0 loss to 10-man Rennes on Friday. According to , all hell broke loose in the visitors' dressing room after the game, with several players reportedly clashing, including Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe.

A disgusted De Zerbi also allegedly told his rowing players: "The others beat us on the pitch, and we come in here and fight among ourselves. You know what that means? That we have small balls. In Marseille, we need to have big ones."

It's going to be fascinating to see if one of the most combustible coaches in world football can restore order at the Velodrome in the coming days and weeks. Marseille's title hopes – and indeed De Zerbi's job – will likely depend upon it.

USMNT Transfers: Norwich raise price after Josh Sargent's recent form, Yunus Musah open to staying at Milan and Middlesbrough call off pursuit of Max Arfsten

The USMNT Transfer Notebook tracks American player movements, with latest developments for those in the U.S. national team pool

The European transfer window is largely set to close on Sept. 1, which means its business time for both clubs and players looking to potentially improve their circumstances.

While much appears to be settled for players in the U.S. men's national team pool, there are still some uncertainties. Will Josh Sargent – potentially the hottest striker in England's top four divisions – make a move? Is there another about-face in regards to Yunus Musah's AC Milan future? Also it appears as if Middlesbrough have found their solution at left back, and it's not Max Arfsten. What's next, then, for the Columbus Crew star?

GOAL tracks all of the American player movements in the USMNT Transfer Notebook, a recurring feature covering the latest developments for those in the U.S. national team pool.

Sargent's torrid form increases price tag

Those words from hip-hop legend Fat Joe are a fitting way to describe Josh Sargent's current situation at Championship side Norwich. The 25-year-old striker turned down the chance to sign with Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in a $29.7 million transfer earlier this summer.

While interested suitors have come in at the same price for Sargent, according to local Norwich sports outlet Pink Un, The Canaries evaluation is now higher as a result of American's form.

"Any club knocking now better come armed with more than £22 million Wolfsburg were willing to commit to," Pink Un editor Paddy Davitt said in a social media post.

Sargent has scored four goals in as many games for Norwich, and that, along with timing, is why the club is asking more for the striker. It could mean Sargent stays until at least January – unless a Premier League club gets desperate at the deadline.

"There's no club remotely near that," Davitt said. "You wouldn't at this stage close the door, but its hard to see a scenario where Norwich do cash out on him… They might find it harder to keep him in January than they are in the present moment… Around the league, he is widely regarded as the best of his type in the division.

"There is the panic element that comes in [and a team in the Premier League] comes in and they need to go and try and get the best No. 9 outside of the Premier League in this country. Which he is."

Recently promoted sides Burnley and Leeds continue to be linked with the striker ahead of next Monday's deadline.

Musah happy to stay at AC Milan

As recently as Monday, AC Milan's Musah was linked with a move within Serie A to Atalanta in a complex transfer involving four clubs within the Italian top flight. Yet, similar to what has happened all summer, Musah walked back any speculation over a potential move.

"I am happy at Milan," he told ESPN FC. "It is a great club. I'd love to win some great things here. It felt really nice winning the Super Cup last season, so I'd love to win more things. This is what we're expected to do here. I am just happy here, and I am looking to work hard and be a main player in the team."

That certainly doesn't sound like a player pushing for a move, despite struggling for starts and minutes at AC Milan. While things can move very quickly in the transfer world, the 22-year-old has publicly said he wants to stay and fight for his minutes in a crowded, but not fully established, midfield.

Musah, meanwhile, was not included in the USMNT roster announced Tuesday. He said he opted to skip the summer's Gold Cup in favor of much-needed rest.

Boro find a left back, but its not Arfsten

Crew star Max Arfsten has been linked with Middlesbrough throughout August, but the club found another left back option.

The Northern Echo reported Boro have turned to Newcastle's out of rotation Englishman Matt Targett, signaling the end of their chase for Arfsten. Targett, 29, will reportedly join the second division side on a season-long loan, providing valuable depth for a club that had utilize left wingers at full back due to the current state of the squad.

However, the Echo did add Boro are expected to resume their interest in Arfsten in the January window. Definitely one to keep an eye out for.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said, with younger viewers also being catered to: “With this change, we are placing the fans' experience at the heart of our planning. The Uefa Champions League final is the highlight of the football season, and the new kick-off time will make it even more accessible, inclusive, and impactful for everyone involved.

“While a 21:00CET kick-off is well suited for midweek matches, an earlier kick-off on a Saturday for the final means an earlier finish – regardless of extra time or penalties – and offers fans the opportunity to enjoy the rest of the evening with friends and family, reflecting on the game of the season.”
