Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s all-round performances throughout 2022 have earned him an all-format BCB contract for the period January to December 2023. He joins Litton Das, Shakib Al Hasan and Taskin Ahmed in the list of players with all-format contracts, while Mushfiqur Rahim and Shoriful Islam, who had full contracts in 2022, have one fewer format in their portfolio this time.Mushfiqur, who retired from T20Is last year, now has a Test and ODI contract while Shoriful Islam has an ODI and T20I contract. Tamim Iqbal, like Mushfiqur, has a Test and an ODI contract, and are the only two in this category.Mehidy previously had a contract for Tests and ODIs only, but proved himself in all three formats to get a promotion. He scored 637 runs at 24.50 in 29 games across formats, and took 59 wickets at 30.55 with his offspin. He was particularly effective in ODIs, with 330 runs at 66 and 24 wickets at 28.20, including a Player-of-the-Series showing against India in December. In the Dhaka Test later on that tour, he took a second-innings five-for to push India all the way in a chase of 145.Related

The BCB have given out central contracts to 13 Test cricketers in all – one fewer than last year. Zakir Hasan was given a Test-only contract, alongside Mominul Haque, Taijul Islam, Ebadot Hossain and Khaled Ahmed.Mahmudullah has been put on a single-format contract – being cut from T20Is – while Najmul Hossain Shanto and Nurul Hasan were promoted to contracts spanning Tests and T20Is. Hasan Mahmud and Mosaddek Hossain were the new faces among the group who got T20I-only deals. However, there was no room for Shadman Islam, Yasir Ali, Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Mohammad Naim in any category.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

BCB’s cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus said that Zakir and Mahmud were rewarded for their improvement in the previous year, while the board is hopeful that Joy, who broke through in the early parts of 2022, will take it up a notch to secure a contract next year.”[Zakir Hasan and Hasan Mahmud] were rewarded for their performance from last year. Hasan Mahmud did well last year. We are encouraging fast bowlers,” Yunus said. “We have always noticed Zakir Hasan’s improvement through his time in the High Performance squads. His hundred against India definitely showed that he has the guts and ability.”We tried Mahmudul Hasan Joy a lot last year. It is not a discouragement, but we want him to earn back the place. We are not discarding him. He can come back, but he has to work hard. Non-contract players are obviously available [for selection].”As is the norm, the BCB didn’t reveal the players’ salaries, but ESPNcricinfo understands that all 21 cricketers will get a slight hike in their monthly pay this year. It is also unlikely that the BCB didn’t raise the match fees, as these are usually increased once every two years, so a raise was due this year.Full list of BCB central contractsAll formats: Litton Das, Shakib Al Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Mehidy Hassan Miraz
Test and ODIs: Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim

Suryakumar and Kishan in India's Test squad to face Australia

Ravindra Jadeja, who has not played any cricket since August 2022, has been picked subject to fitness

Alagappan Muthu13-Jan-2023Suryakumar Yadav’s incredible exploits in T20I cricket have propelled him into the Test arena, with the 32-year-old batter picked in a 17-member squad to play for India against Australia. The squad, picked for only the first two Tests of the four-match home series, includes another player who has made his name in the white-ball circuit. Ishan Kishan has come into the side with first-choice wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant in recovery after a car accident.India go into the Border-Gavaskar series, starting on February 9, with the spearhead of their pace attack stuck on the sidelines. Jasprit Bumrah had, not so long ago, looked like he was ready to return to cricket after recovering from a stress reaction in his back. But in the process of getting himself used to normal workloads again, he felt stiffness in his right glute and has now been advised at least another month’s rehabilitation.ESPNcricinfo LtdRavindra Jadeja is coming out of his own long-term injury lay-off. The left-arm spin-bowling allrounder has been picked in the squad and could have a huge role to play in a home series that India need to win 3-1 or better to be assured of a place in the World Test Championship final. Jadeja has not played any cricket since August 2022. He was originally due to return during the tour of Bangladesh late last year, but it emerged that he needed more time to recover from a knee surgery done in September. Even now, the BCCI has noted in its press release announcing the squad that Jadeja’s inclusion “is subject to fitness.”India’s Test-match batting is set to receive an injection of pace should either of Kishan or Suryakumar make the XI. Both players have strike rates above 60 in first-class cricket. But getting them in remains a challenge.Related

WTC final: The road ahead for Australia, India, South Africa and Sri Lanka

The captain Rohit Sharma, the vice-captain KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli will likely occupy the top four spots. Shreyas Iyer should slot in at No. 5 or 6 given his recent form – he averaged 101 in India’s most recent Test series, against Bangladesh in December 2022, while Shubman Gill seems the first reserve for both opening and middle-order roles. Kishan has been designated as a wicketkeeper in the squad so he will be pitted against KS Bharat, who has long been the understudy to Pant.On the bowling front, Mohammed Shami will step up as the front man of the attack with support from Mohammed Siraj, who enjoyed a stellar debut series against Australia when India beat them on their turf in 2020-21, Jaydev Unadkat, the left-armer who recently broke a spell of 12 years between Test matches, and Umesh Yadav. Hardik Pandya, although a regular part of India’s white-ball set-up, is not part of the Test squad. It is learnt that he does not yet have the fitness to bowl long spells in red-ball cricket. R Ashwin will be the lead spinner with Jadeja, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav backing him up.Changes between India’s last Test squad and this one

The France international is currently out of action with a hamstring problem and missed the game, but he didn't take kindly to Mundo Deportivo's claim he had been partying to celebrate the result.

Saqib Mahmood marks injury comeback with three wickets in Lions win

Saqib Mahmood marked his competitive comeback with three cheap wickets in England Lions’ four-wicket victory over Sri Lanka A in Colombo.Mahmood has not played a professional game in ten months after a back stress fracture but is part of England’s ODI squad for next month’s tour to Bangladesh, and took 3 for 27 in 7.1 overs in the first of three List A fixtures on the Lions tour. His three victims – Avishka Fernando, Nuwanidu Fernando and Chamika Karunaratne – have all played international cricket, and he struck twice early as Sri Lanka A stumbled to 9 for 3 after four overs.

They were eventually bowled out for 230, a total England knocked off with 9.4 overs to spare thanks to half-centuries from Warwickshire batters Jacob Bethell – one of five Lions debutants – and Sam Hain. Sadeera Samarawickrama was Sri Lanka’s top-scorer with 74, while legspinner Dushan Hemantha took three wickets.”I’m really happy,” Mahmood said. “Pre-game I was very internal and thinking about myself. To be honest, I just didn’t want to look stupid out there. It’s natural to have those sorts of thoughts when you haven’t played for so long, but at the same time, there was a part of me that wanted to go out and really impress.”I just needed that and today when I got out there from the first over something triggered me and I wasn’t thinking about myself, my body or the technical things. It was purely about outcome and performance and they came out nice.Related

“One of their opening batters got given out lbw and stood there for a little longer than he should have and I just had a word with him. That was literally it. For a first game back and not knowing how it would go, I feel really good and chuffed with how it has gone.Despite Mahmood’s successful comeback, there was a potential injury concern for England ahead of the upcoming Bangladesh tour. Tom Abell, the Lions’ captain, left the field one ball into his third over with a side injury and was not deemed fit to bat. The ECB said Abell was being assessed and it remains to be seen whether it will rule him out of his first full international tour.

New Zealand’s lower-order hitting in the first innings, and their rallying with the ball late on day four were crucial moments in the first Test against Sri Lanka. This was what their captain Tim Southee felt, after his team had pulled off a last-ball victory at Hagley Oval – the hosts scrambling to a target of 285 with two wickets to spare.Oh, plus Daryl Mitchell’s innings – both in the first dig, where he held New Zealand together with his 102, and in the second, when he hit 81, forging a 142-run fourth-wicket partnership with Kane Williamson. In the first innings, Southee hit 25, Matt Henry crashed 72, and Neil Wagner made 27, when New Zealand had seemed like they’d end up with a serious first-innings deficit.”Daryl’s first innings was a was a massive turning point and it sort of got us back in,” Southee said after the match. “And any time the lower order is able to contribute is massive, and it sort of got us into the lead.Related

If you need someone to scramble, who better than Kane Williamson?

“We were able to eke out runs there, and then on day four, when we were able to bowl them out quickly and now give them a position when they were able to declare and dictate how many runs they wanted – there’s a couple of moments there where you look back on as probably turning points in the game.”On Williamson, who shepherded the chase, hit a spectacular final boundary through point, and got New Zealand to their target, Southee had this to say: “He’s just a world-class player, and world-class players are able to perform in different conditions and different situations. Even when he was young, he was the guy you leaned on.”We saw his class even with that last boundary, when he beat two fielders to the big side of the ground. Just the calmness with which he does it is good for the group. Seeing how calm he is in the middle keeps us all calm as well.”Southee believed being relaxed even in tense situations was something New Zealand prided themselves on.”It’s just about trying to keep calm. When you’ve got one of our best players out there, that helps as well. We’ve seen it in the last two Tests, and in Pakistan as well. It’s a changing group, but the belief in the guys that that have come in… we’ve had a couple of bad days but being able to bounce back and know that someone’s going to put their hand up – that’s a sign of a good side.”

Vithushan Ehantharajah27-Feb-2023Kane Williamson says he is honoured to lead a list of greats after becoming New Zealand’s leading Test run-scorer and hopes to cap off the milestone with a series-squaring victory in the second Test against England.Upon passing 28 early in the morning on day four, Williamson overtook Ross Taylor’s tally of 7,683 runs in his 161st innings. The 32-year-old’s 132 held together a response of 483, giving Ben Stokes’ side a chase of 258 to secure the series 2-0. Tim Southee, who took over as Test captain when Williamson stepped down last December, removed Zak Crawley to leave the tourists 48 for 1 overnight.”It’s not something I’ve thought a whole lot about,” said Williamson after the day’s play. “But it is an honour. You look at that list, and I’ve admired all of those players over those years, whether that’s watching from afar growing up or playing alongside a number of them as well. Like I say, it’s not a focus point but it’s special to be amongst that company.”It would be pretty special for sure,” he said on the prospect of becoming only the fourth team to win a Test after following-on. “It’s exciting going in to day five. As a bowling attack and a team, we want to make sure we’re on come tomorrow. There’s still some assistance there and some assistance for the slower bowlers as well. All to play for, which is exciting.”Harry Brook picked up the key wicket of Kane Williamson•AFP/Getty ImagesWilliamson, however, was frustrated with his dismissal. Not just because it was the start of a collapse of five for 28 from a commanding position of 455 for 5, but that the bowler who dismissed him was not a bowler at all. Harry Brook, whose exploits have been exclusively with the bat, was brought on in the 148th over to give James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson a rest ahead of a potential third new ball. With the final delivery of his third of seven overs of medium pace off the wrong foot, Brook fired a delivery down the leg side which Williamson tickled into the gloves of Ben Foakes, who was standing up to the stumps. Even as he shook his head contemplating the dismissal in his post-match press conference, he was able to see the funny side.”He didn’t miss his length at all, ey? He was immaculate.”He was on point. Maybe that (the wicket-taking delivery) was the worst ball he bowled, actually.”Initially given not out on the field, Ben Stokes reluctantly called for a review on the insistence of Joe Root who thought he heard something. A noise was picked up as the ball passed the face of the bat, leading to an overturned decision. While it was not a big spike, Williamson is satisfied the technology worked.”In my instance, it was,” he said when asked if UltraEdge had worked correctly. “But I think at times you see some shakes in the lone. Whether that’s accurate or now, I don’t really know. We had a few dismissals in Pakistan.”

Barcelona will be looking to offload players deemed surplus to requirements in a bid to help head coach Flick register any potential new signings. The club seems to have already taken the first step towards achieving that goal, with Jijantes (h/t Football Espana) reporting that Como have completed the permanent transfer of Alex Valle.

Barcelona's struggles with finances have been well-documented. Over the course of the 2024-25 season, they got embroiled in registration drama, which put Dani Olmo and Pau Victor's futures at the club in jeopardy, albeit temporarily. Winning the La Liga and Copa del Rey trophies, as well as making a deep run in the Champions League, will have boosted their revenues, but Valle's sale to Como comes as an additional significant step towards improving the club's fiscal muscle for the future.

Valle was initially sent on loan to Celtic, before Como signed him in January on a short-term loan. After making 14 appearances for the club, the Italian outfit have gone ahead with the permanent transfer for the 21-year-old left-back. Como are believed to have activated the €6 million option to buy, of which they will pay €4m upfront and an additional €2m in variables.
