Aston Villa star Lucas Digne left shows off gruesome ankle gash horror injury after unleashing X-rated tirade at fourth official during Tottenham clash

Aston Villa defender Lucas Digne showed the true meaning of 'no pain, no gain' after Sunday’s clash against Tottenham. The Frenchman suffered a gruesome ankle gash following a crunching tackle from Kevin Danso, later unleashing an X-rated tirade at the fourth official. The 32-year-old later shared a graphic image of his injury on Instagram.

  • Digne furious with officials after painful blow

The heated incident unfolded during the second half of Aston Villa’s 2-1 comeback victory over Tottenham. Digne was left writhing in pain after Danso’s follow-through caught his ankle hard inside the box, but referee Simon Hooper waved play on despite Villa’s protests. Furious at the lack of punishment, Digne later erupted after being substituted, kicking a chair before directing an X-rated rant at fourth official Anthony Taylor.

The Frenchman beckoned Taylor to inspect his ankle, visibly furious that Danso had escaped a booking. While Spurs fans jeered his outburst, Digne’s passion reflected his frustration at what he believed was dangerous play ignored by the officials. His fiery reaction briefly overshadowed Villa’s crucial win, though few could question his commitment after the match.

  • Digne's 'No pain, no gain' mantra

After the full-time whistle, Digne took to Instagram to show fans exactly why he had been so enraged on the touchline. The Aston Villa star posted a photo of his ankle being treated by the medical team, revealing a deep, open gash that stretched across the top of his ankle. Captioning the image with the defiant line “No pain, no gain” and a crying-laughing emoji, Digne gave followers a glimpse of the grim aftermath of Danso’s challenge.

The post quickly went viral among Villa fans, who praised the defender’s toughness and willingness to play through the pain barrier. It wasn’t the first time Digne had done so this season, having previously continued after sustaining a head injury during Villa’s draw with Everton in September.

  • Assist sets up vital win for Villa at Spurs

Digne had already been crucial before the ugly challenge. The 32-year-old had set up Villa’s match-winning goal, showing remarkable composure to control a high pass from Matty Cash before feeding Emi Buendía, who fired home a superb strike to make it 2-1. That assist marked another strong outing in a season where Digne has been among Unai Emery’s most reliable performers.

The full-back won seven duels and all three of his aerial battles against Tottenham, underlining both his defensive and attacking value for Emery’s side. Villa had failed to overturn a deficit in 10 of their last 11 away defeats before this result, making the comeback even more significant.

WTC winners to get USD 3.6 million in prize money

The winners of the World Test Championship (WTC) final, to be played between South Africa and Australia at Lord’s starting June 11, will secure a prize money of USD 3.6 million, more than double of the winners in the last two cycles. The runners-up, meanwhile, will bag more than USD 2.1 million, while the prize for the same in the previous editions was USD 800,000.The winners in the last two cycles — New Zealand and Australia — had earned USD 1.6 million each.”The increase in prize money exhibits the ICC’s efforts to prioritize Test cricket as it looks to build on the momentum of the first three cycles of the nine-team competition,” the ICC said in its release.India, who finished third on the table, will receive over USD 1.4 million, while fourth-placed New Zealand get USD 1.2 million. Even the prize money for teams finishing fifth (USD 960000) and sixth (USD 840000) — England and Sri Lanka — is more than what it was for the runners-up in the previous editions.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

South Africa topped the table in the 2023-25 edition with eight wins from 12 games, and were the first team to seal a final spot with a dramatic two-wicket win over Pakistan. Defending champions Australia got through by pipping India to the second spot after winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1 at home. Both teams have named their squads for the final. The focus for South Africa will be on their pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada after his one-month ban for failing a drug test, while Cameron Green makes his return to Australia’s Test side after undergoing a lower spine surgery last year.

Moody, Kumble want RCB to shake off loss and not second-guess themselves

“The good thing for RCB is that they will play the last game and they will know exactly where they stand and what they need to do,” Anil Kumble says

ESPNcricinfo staff24-May-20251:01

Did RCB get their bowling tactics right?

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) didn’t to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Friday night in Lucknow, but they would have wanted to: a win would have given them a great shot at finishing in the top two of the IPL 2025 league table. It didn’t happen. Now, Tom Moody wants them to “move on very quickly”, while Anil Kumble is still backing them to get there – after all, they will play the last game of the league phase and will know “what they need to do.””I think you need to move on very quickly. I think you’ve got to patch up your wounds – and they’ve got a few scars there – but I don’t think you dwell on it too much,” Moody said on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show after RCB’s 42-run loss. “Because they have done a lot of good things this season, and that should be the focus, try to draw out some of the positives of this game – the opening partnership of 80, [Phil] Salt back in the side [and] finding some form – he hit five sixes. So try to keep it upbeat, try to keep it as positive as possible, because now is not the time for people to be second-guessing what they are doing or what their role is in the side.”Salt finding form was certainly one of the positives. His last appearance was back on April 24, almost exactly a month ago, before he fell ill. Then came the break because of the India-Pakistan border tensions. Then came RCB’s first match upon the IPL’s resumption, which was washed out. They have lost Devdutt Padikkal and Josh Hazlewood (though he might return) to injuries, and Jacob Bethell and Lungi Ngidi are done for the season because of responsibilities with their national sides. And Tim David might have done his hamstring on Friday.Related

Hazlewood expected to return to IPL for playoffs

The circumstances can get you down, but Kumble liked what he saw from RCB in their chase of SRH’s 231 for 6, especially the start of 80 runs in seven overs from Virat Kohli and Salt. Though he did point to the mistakes in that chase too.”The start was extremely good. Though Virat Kohli was the dominant partner in the opening stand with Phil Salt, who was playing after a month and looked rusty, but one of them needed to bat deep,” Kumble said. “If that had happened, we would be talking about an RCB win. I also think that the 25-odd balls that Mayank [Agarwal] and Rajat Patidar played together made it tough for RCB. But their game plan was right. The fall of wickets and Tim David’s injury didn’t help.”Agarwal, who has been brought in from the cold to replace Padikkal, scored 11 in ten balls, and Patidar, back from a hand injury and playing as a batter-only scored 18 in 16. Coming as their innings did after the frenetic start, it did peg RCB back.Jitesh Sharma, standing in for Patidar as captain, said after the game that he didn’t mind the result. “I think sometimes losing a game is a very good sign because you can check, analyse where we are lacking.” Kumble wasn’t buying it. But with RCB playing Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to end the league phase on May 27, Kumble hasn’t given up on his old team making the top two.”You need to say these things. You shouldn’t be losing at this stage. You needed to win this to make it easier to finish in the top two. We know the importance of a top-two finish,” he said. “It can still happen. Mathematically, anything can happen on the table. But the pressure will be on RCB. The good thing for RCB is that they will play the last game and they will know exactly where they stand and what they need to do.”

Nottingham Forest in advanced talks to hire "sensational" Ange replacement

Nottingham Forest are now in advanced talks to appoint a “sensational” new manager following the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou on Saturday.

Ange sacked by Marinakis after 3-0 defeat against Chelsea

Nuno Espirito Santo left big shoes to fill, after leading Forest to Europe last season, but Ange’s reign as Forest boss was nothing short of disastrous, with the Australian becoming the second-shortest reigning manager in Premier League history.

The 60-year-old lasted just 39 days as manager of the Tricky Trees, picking up just one point in five Premier League matches, while also struggling in the Europa League, with his side falling to a 3-2 home defeat against FC Midtjylland earlier this month.

The final straw was Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat against Chelsea, although the scoreline arguably didn’t reflect the performance, with Morgan Gibbs-White, Igor Jesus, Neco Williams and Nikola Milenkovic all missing big chances across the 90 minutes.

Evangelos Marinakis didn’t wait around, sacking the former Tottenham Hotspur boss before he could even do his post-match interview, and the owner has now set his sights on a replacement.

According to an update from Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett on X, Sean Dyche is now in advanced talks to become the new Nottingham Forest manager, and the move could materialise quickly if Marinakis decides the 54-year-old is the right man for the job.

There is a belief Dyche would offer stability and motivational skills, which could bring the Tricky Trees’ poor run of form to an end, with the Europa League side currently in the relegation zone after a very poor start to the season.

Nottingham Forest chiefs want Marinakis to replace Postecoglou with "master" tactician

The Greek billionaire has finally called time on Ange’s nightmare stint.

ByEmilio Galantini Oct 18, 2025

The former Everton boss is not the only manager on the shortlist, however, as Dorsett reveals that Roberto Mancini hasn’t been ruled out, with the 60-year-old available after leaving his role as Saudi Arabia manager last year.

"Sensational" Dyche could steady the ship at the City Ground

The Englishman has developed a reputation for being able to steady the ship at clubs staring down the barrel of relegation, leading Everton to safety on the final day of the 2022-23 campaign, after replacing Frank Lampard in January.

With Forest massively underperforming and perhaps set for a relegation battle of their own this season, having collected just five points from their opening eight games, it would make sense to appoint the ex-Burnley boss, who has received high praise from journalist Mark Douglas.

There are question marks over appointing Dyche on a long-term contract, having been unable to kick on with Everton after avoiding the drop, being sacked after less than two years in charge, but giving him a contract until the end of the season could be a savvy move,

Leeds outcast is quickly becoming Farke's new Bamford & it's not DCL

It has been a slow start to the season for Leeds United’s new number nine, Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The former Everton striker joined the club on a free transfer in the summer, after his contract on Merseyside expired.

The 28-year-old England international has been an important part of Daniel Farke’s side since his summer move to Elland Road, featuring in six games so far, starting the last four in the Premier League.

However, he’s only managed to bag one goal, with his strike coming against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 3-1 win at Molineux last month.

Farke will be hoping Calvert-Lewin can be a better option up front than Patrick Bamford was towards the end of his Leeds career.

Bamford's rocky time under Farke

For several years, former England international Bamford was the first-choice centre-forward at Elland Road. He notched up 205 appearances for the club, scoring 60 times and assisting a further 25 goals. He was a favourite disciple of the great Marcelo Bielsa. Sadly, all good things must come to an end.

His time at Leeds ended this summer, with the club agreeing to terminate his deal by mutual consent. His final two seasons at Elland Road were spent under the tutelage of Farke, although it wasn’t an easy couple of years.

In total, Bamford played 54 times under the German, bagging nine goals and setting two up. The 2023/24 campaign was more than respectable, with the Grantham-born striker netting eight goals in 33 Championship matches.

It was the following term that proved to be problematic for Bamford. He couldn’t get into the side under Farke, and played just 17 games in the Championship, hindered further by a 14-game injury issue.

He didn’t score that campaign, and was later told by the Leeds boss that he is “not in my plans” for 2025/26. Thus, his deal was terminated.

Calvert-Lewin could certainly be seen as the new Bamford, given he is, in essence, a direct replacement.

Yet, there is another Leeds star who could be considered Farke’s new version of the England striker.

Leeds star in danger of being the new Bamford

Things certainly ended in a disappointing way for the Chelsea academy graduate, with the Leeds boss up front about the fact he would have no role to play in the Premier League this season.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Well, just as Bamford struggled to get game time last season, another Leeds striker could be headed down a similar path.

It has been a tough campaign so far for Dutch striker Joel Piroe. The former Swansea City star has previously shone under Farke, making 97 appearances under the German, to great success, too.

In that time, the 26-year-old scored 33 goals and assisted a further ten. His Championship form was impressive, racking up 13 league goals in 2023/24, and 19 last term as the Whites won the title.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the boss hailed him as “the best finisher” he’s ever worked with only a few weeks ago.

The underlying stats from those two years, showed just how well he has done at Elland Road so far.

For example, two seasons ago, Piroe had a 22.22% conversion rate, and last term, he averaged 0.6 goals per game, an example of why former Swansea boss Russell Martin called him “clinical.”

This term has been a completely different story for the Dutchman. The arrivals of Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha have greatly restricted Prioe’s opportunities, and he’s only played three Premier League games, racking up 147 minutes.

It is easy to see how this situation compares to Bamford’s last season. The former Leeds striker had few opportunities to stake a claim under Farke, and the start to 2025/26 has been similar for Piroe.

He will be hoping that the opportunity arises in the coming weeks. The stats are certainly on his side, with the former PSV Eindhoven striker putting up some good numbers over the last couple of years with the German in charge.

If this continues, Piroe is certainly in danger of becoming the new Bamford at Elland Road.

PIF now serious about cut-price signing after Howe tells them what he's missing

As Eddie Howe aims to add depth to his side, Newcastle United and PIF are reportedly getting serious about signing a Champions League target in the January transfer window.

Eddie Howe: Newcastle missing "X-factor"

After losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool and only managing to welcome Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa late on in the summer transfer window, Newcastle were always likely to need time before finding their best form. Last weekend’s draw at Bournemouth summed that up more than previous games.

Newcastle join Man City and Arsenal in race to sign "pacy" Bundesliga star

He’s a wanted man…

By

Sep 23, 2025

The Magpies lacked the firepower that they once had. While Woltemade did score on his debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers, he still needs time to find his full sharpness. Wissa, meanwhile, has been forced to wait for his debut after suffering the most untimely injury during this month’s international break.

Howe will be hoping that both players eventually make their mark, but did admit that Newcastle have so far missed the “X-factor” that Isak gave them for a number of years.

Of course, if things don’t quite click then the January transfer window represents an ideal time for those at St James’ Park to welcome further incomings.

To that end, names such as Conor Gallagher have already been mentioned as potential candidates to arrive. The Atletico Madrid man could be on his way to English football and to St James’ Park. It’s there that he could also be joined by another Champions League talent, too.

Newcastle seriously considering Brandt move

According to reports in Spain, PIF and Newcastle are now getting serious about signing Julian Brandt and are one of many clubs considering his arrival when 2026 arrives. The German has fallen down the pecking order at Borussia Dortmund and could be available at a cut-price in January with his current deal expiring next summer.

The winger could finally get his move to the Premier League as a result. For some time, it looked as though he was destined for Anfield and Jurgen Klopp, before the Reds instead moved for Mohamed Salah many moons ago. Now, years on, he could come back to haunt the Reds in Newcastle colours.

Although he’s fallen out of favour in Germany, Brandt could provide Howe with the versatility that he needs in his current squad. The Dortmund ace can play in attacking midfield and on both flanks in what would offer Newcastle support across their attack.

Having been praised as “outstanding” by teammate Nico Schlotterbeck in 2023, the 29-year-old still has plenty to offer if he gets back to his best form. Whether Newcastle get ahead of Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur in the race for his signature remains to be seen, however.

Barnard lifts buoyant Bears as Yorkshire fall short

Attacking approach pays off for visitors despite Dawid Malan’s latest half-century

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay13-Jun-2025Allrounder Ed Barnard hit an excellent middle-order 67 and then helped close things out with the ball as Birmingham Bears defended a 206-target to claim a crucial Vitality Blast win over Yorkshire at Headingley.Barnard’s 40-ball knock was the centrepiece of a 205 for 8 total which also included a telling late assault of 76 runs in the last five overs from the lower order.Pakistan seamer Hasan Ali hit 22 not out off eight balls and later struck twice with the ball, sealing a third win in six in the North Group – this by 32 runs.Yorkshire, for whom New Zealand quick Will O’Rourke struck three times with the ball, looked well placed to reel in the target thanks to opener and captain Dawid Malan’s 65 off 34 balls. But his fourth successive fifty in this competition was not enough to prevent a fourth defeat in six, the hosts finishing on 173 for 5.Alex Davies, who elected to bat, guided George Hill’s seam to short third – 20 for 1 in the second over. Dom Bess, with his first ball, and O’Rourke then removed Dan Mousley bowled and Sam Hain caught at point as the Bears ended the powerplay at 51 for 3.Tom Latham and Barnard steadied through accumulation to reach halfway with the score on 85. However, the former fell on 24 at the start of the 12th when he top-edged England Lion Hill to long-leg.That was the first of three wickets in successive overs as the Bears slipped back into trouble at 123 for 6 in the 14th over. Moeen Ali was lbw to Jack White for 9 and Kai Smith caught behind off O’Rourke’s pace. But their batters refused to die wondering on a belter of a batting pitch.George Garton whacked two sixes over long-on as 21 came off Bess in the 16th before he skewed O’Rourke to deep cover in the 18th – 160 for 7. Sandwiched in between, Barnard reached a 32-ball fifty.Barnard fell caught in the deep off Jack White in the penultimate, which ended with two Hasan sixes to help the Bears get above 200.Will Luxton skewed Hassan’s pace high to mid-off in the second over of a chase which advanced at pace. Malan hit two slog-swept sixes over midwicket off Danny Briggs’ spin in the fifth over and the score reached 56 for 1 after six.Garton dropped Malan at deep midwicket on 29 off Briggs in the seventh over, though there was success for the Bears when Moeen’s second ball bowled Adam Lyth – 66 for 2 in the eighth.Malan aside, Yorkshire’s batting has been sketchy this campaign. So by now, it felt like Malan or bust for the hosts. By the time he reached his latest fifty, off 29 balls, the hosts were 100 for two early in the 12th over.James Wharton provided impressive third-wicket support in sharing 55 with his skipper, though left-armer Briggs struck a key blow in the 13th when he had Malan caught at short fine-leg off a skied top-edged sweep – 121 for 3.Yorkshire needed 65 off the last five overs before Mousley’s offspin removed powerful Australian Will Sutherland, the target becoming a stiffer 47 off three overs at 159 for 4. Wharton fell for 37 in the penultimate over before Barnard’s seam – nought for 18 from three overs – closed out the last, defending 39.

Flower: 'Tremendous respect' for how Patidar remained calm despite all the scrutiny

“You can’t underestimate the calmness he showed in leading some really big players, a really big franchise and making good decisions under pressure”

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jun-20252:38

Aaron: Patidar a huge factor in RCB’s title win

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) head coach Andy Flower was all praise for captain Rajat Patidar after he led the team to their maiden IPL title with a six-run win over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Ahmedabad. Patidar has played only four international games for India, but Flower feels he didn’t let that lack of experience become a hurdle in carrying out the “tricky job”.”One of the most impressive things about what Rajat has done this year is, as an inexperienced captain, that he hasn’t been affected by it,” Flower said. “I don’t think it has affected his batting because I’ve watched him really closely as a character, and he is still the lovely, gentle, polite Rajat Patidar that we knew last year. He hasn’t changed at all in that regard.”Captaining RCB is a really tricky job. If I cast my mind back to how poorly I captained when I was his age, I’ve got tremendous respect for how he’s held himself with all that scrutiny, and captained some big players. You can’t underestimate the calmness he showed in leading some really big players, a really big franchise, making good decisions out there in the middle under the pressure that RCB players play under. So I’ve got tons of respect for him. I’m really proud of the way that he’s carried himself, and he’s been crucial to us doing well.”Related

Kohli and RCB are finally IPL champions

Chasing 191 for victory, PBKS made a brisk start with Priyansh Arya looking to shift into a higher gear. But an excellent catch by Phil Salt near the backward-square-leg boundary sent him back in the fifth over. Flower said that was one of the turning points of the match.”That was an outstanding catch, wasn’t it?” he said. “I thought it was a perfect example of someone holding his nerve under pressure. It took a while to get to him, he knew that he was moving towards the boundary, and to stay that calm under that sort of pressure in a final to get our first wicket was an amazing piece of fielding from him, and also just holding his nerve.”He only got back from England at 3 o’clock this morning, and he’s been an outstanding batter and fielder for us throughout the season. He has taken a couple of catches like that through the season, he works really hard at it. I think he had actually preferred to keep wicket, but he was outstanding, and a turning point, obviously.”The ball was sticking in the pitch a bit, especially in the first innings, and Flower felt the RCB batters did well to take the team to a formidable total.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“We would have bowled first if we’d won the toss,” he said. “The pitch was a little tricky and it might have felt a little slow to a lot of people, but there were little cameos along the way from a lot of our batting group, and good aggressive little cameos that took us to 190, and 190 is a big chase when the pressure of winning the cup is on. So even though we lost the toss, I thought we handled ourselves really well.”Flower also had praise for Dinesh Karthik for making a successful transition from a player last year to the team mentor and batting coach this season.”I think some of our assistant coaches, DK [Karthik], Malo [Malolan Rangarajan], Richard Halsall, and Omkar Salvi, they’ve been outstanding,” Flower said. “Having that Indian insight and knowledge in our coaching staff has been really important for this campaign this year. And DK particularly, I think as a mentor and batting specialist, he’s been brilliant. I’ve loved working with him, he’s got great energy, he has got a smile on his face most of the time.”I think he’s really enjoyed his job this year. It’s quite a transition to make from playing to coaching, and he’s done it amazingly well. It’s very obvious that he’s had an impact, certainly on the batting group, but he’s certainly had an impact within the leadership of the management group, and the coaching group, and with the wider team. So he’s a really impressive guy, a brilliant guy to spend some time with, and I’ve loved every minute of it.”Dinesh Karthik made the transition from a player to a mentor and batting coach•BCCI

Director of cricket Mo Bobat was another person to have impressed Flower, with his insights and auction strategy.”I’ve worked with him [Bobat] a little bit with the England cricket board when we both worked for England,” Flower said. “For such a young man to have such insight and knowledge and drive, he’s incredibly impressive, and I think his leadership over the last couple of years… it has been really impressive to be close to him while he’s been leading like he does. He’s got a great brain, he’s a good strategist, and he’s a good man, so I’ve got tons of respect for him.”The auction is a huge first step that you’ve got to try and get as right as possible, and part of Mo’s philosophy, right up front, was to distribute the value a little more equitably, rather than spending too much on big-name batsmen, who are of course very fine players, but the importance of a good bowling attack was acknowledged absolutely adamantly right at the start, before the auction, and we worked towards that.”I know after the first day of the auction, we were copping a little bit of flak. People thought we were investing our money rather than spending it, but it meant that there was some really good value to be had on the second day, and we had the money to then spend on that value, and we got guys like Bhuvi [Bhuvneshwar Kumar], Krunal [Pandya], Tim David, Romario Shepherd, all on that second day. So that was really important. I think Suyash Sharma’s done really well for us, our little legspinner. I thought he’s handled himself really well through the season. Krunal is a big-match player and a great competitor, and that spell today was the major difference between the teams.”
