Mitchell Johnson will not join Kings XI Punjab for the remainder of the Champions League after Cricket Australia ruled that he has not yet recovered from a rib injury.Johnson was ruled out of the early part of the tournament after picking up the problem during the tri-series in Zimbabwe and Cricket Australia’s general manager of team performance, Pat Howard, said he was still not ready.”Unfortunately Mitchell is not back to 100% fitness so we will not be releasing him to Kings XI Punjab for the remainder of the Champions League,” Howard said. “He will travel with the squad to Dubai on Sunday to continue his rehab with the team medical staff.”The Australians fly out on Sunday for their Twenty20 and three ODIs against Pakistan in the UAE, which will be followed by two Tests.Johnson will be a key figure for Australia in the Tests especially and it is no surprise that Australia would not risk rushing him back too soon with Shane Watson already ruled out with a calf injury and Michael Clarke in doubt with a hamstring problem.Johnson played four of the five ODIs in Zimbabwe, resting for one match in the middle of the tournament. However, he suffered rib pain during the series and when he returned to Australia scans confirmed when team physio Alex Kountouris described as “irritation of the tip of the rib”.

India hopeful on Ishant fitness for Old Trafford

India’s bowling coach, Joe Dawes, is confident Ishant Sharma will be fit by the time the fourth Test begins, in Manchester on August 7

Sidharth Monga at the Ageas Bowl27-Jul-2014India’s bowling coach, Joe Dawes, is confident Ishant Sharma will be fit by the time the fourth Test begins, in Manchester on August 7. Ishant, Man of the Match at Lord’s for his seven-wicket haul in the second innings, had to be withdrawn from the Southampton Test in what seemed to be a last-minute move. MS Dhoni said he would have played Ishant had this been a one-day match, but he didn’t want to risk him over five days.Pankaj Singh, Ishant’s replacement, was put on standby Saturday night, according to Dawes, which suggests India were not confident of Ishant’s availability. Dawes said Ishant has “a bit of a sore leg”, further tests on which are yet to be done. “There are eleven days or so to the next Test, and I am confident that he can pull through,” Dawes said.Pankaj might have been given the message to stay prepared for a debut, but the final call wasn’t made until the teams got to the ground an hour before toss. Ishant tried bowling, but pulled up a little sore. However, Dawes saying that they hadn’t made the decision right until toss time is a bit of an exaggeration. Ishant had been in a warm jacket and doing nothing for about 20 minutes leading up to the toss, which was a clear indication.Pankaj had a mixed day in the field. He was desperately unlucky in having Alastair Cook dropped off his bowling, and then missing out on what looked like a pretty straightforward lbw decision against Ian Bell. Towards the end of the day, though, he took a bit of tap, getting pulled, cut and driven off the toes.”After ten years, it was a dream come true,” Pankaj told Star Sports. “Really happy to make my debut, but I would have liked to get a wicket for my team. Hopefully I get some tomorrow. It’s an unbelievable feeling. Can’t put it in words. Tried my best, but things haven’t happened. Hopefully tomorrow that changes.”

Poynton ruled out for season

Derbyshire wicketkeeper Tom Poynton, who last month was seriously injured in a car crash that claimed the life of his father Keith, has no prospect of playing again this season because of the extent of his injuries.Further investigations by medical specialists have revealed that Poynton’s leg injuries, sustained in the accident, are worse than were originally thought and will require a long period of rehabilitation. The club have also revealed that Richard Johnson, who contests the wicketkeeping spot with Poynton, is suffering from “sports performance anxiety issues”. That has prompted the signing of Gareth Cross, who was released by Lancashire last season as they secured a deal with the England batsman-keeper Jos Buttler.Graeme Welch, Derbyshire’s elite performance director, said: “We are all bitterly disappointed for Tom. He’ll get the best possible support from our medical team during his rehab and will remain very much a part of the group.”It’s a setback for the lad, but he’s a resilient character and a strong professional. He’ll throw himself into rehab and come back fitter, stronger and more determined than before.”Derbyshire had brought in Dan Hodgson on loan but Cross, who has been playing for Nantwich in the Cheshire Premier League, provides a more long-term option. Hodgson has now returned to Yorkshire. He played in Derbyshire’s last Championship match, against Worcestershire, after Johnson was ruled out with illness, the nature of which has now been revealed.”Richard Johnson is a talented cricketer who takes a really hard working and professional approach to his cricket, ” Welch said. “However, cricket has to take a backseat for him now while he’s given time and privacy to recover with full support and understanding from the club.”The pressures faced by cricketers who are trying to be successful in a tough environment are well documented. All of the welfare programmes are in place, through the club, the PCA and the ECB, to support Richard at this time.”Gareth, meanwhile, is an experienced wicketkeeper-batsman and we are delighted to have him at the club. It’s testament to the relationships and contacts within our elite coaching structure that we managed to secure such a top signing when we needed it. He’s a very good batsman who can score quickly. He’s also very tidy with the gloves and his attitude during the trial period with our second team has been top draw.”

CSK retain Dhoni, Raina, Ashwin, Jadeja, Bravo

Chennai Super Kings have retained MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo ahead of the IPL 2014 auction. The tournament rules allow for five players to be retained, of whom only four can be capped India players. This will leave the franchise with one right-to-match card at the auction on February 12.Super Kings have been the most successful of the IPL franchises, making the final five times out of six, and winning on two occasions – in 2010 and 2011. In 2010, they did the double of winning the IPL and the Champions League T20. They have also been one of the most settled franchises, with the core of the team remaining the same over the seasons. So it comes as no surprise that they have retained as many players as possible here.Among the players staying with Super Kings, captain Dhoni, batsman Raina and offspinner Ashwin have never played for another IPL franchise. Dhoni, India’s captain and arguably the best finisher in limited-overs cricket, was the most expensive buy of the inaugural IPL auction back in 2008. Raina, the tournament’s leading run-getter overall, is yet to miss a single match for Super Kings. Ashwin has been one of many players who adds local flavour to the team, and until the recently-concluded series against South Africa, was India’s first-choice spinner. On Boxing Day, in Durban, Ashwin – perhaps temporarily – lost that title to Jadeja. Super Kings had bought allrounder Jadeja at the 2012 auction, paying more than US$2 million for him after his bidding went into a secret tie-breaker with the now-defunct Deccan Chargers. West Indies allrounder Bravo, who in 2013 set a new record for the most wickets in an IPL season, completes the list.January 10 is the deadline for the IPL franchises to announce their list of retained players, ahead of the auction on February 12. Aside from retained players, franchises can buy back additional members of their squads at the auction via right-to-match cards. The number of right-to-match cards available to each franchise will depend on the number of players already retained. Since Super Kings have retained five players, they will have one right-to-match card at the auction.A fixed amount will be deducted from Super Kings’ auction purse of Rs 600 million (approx. US$ 9.6 million, at the current exchange rate) for each player retained: Rs 125 million for player one, Rs 95 million for player two, Rs 75 million for player three, Rs 55 million for player four and Rs 40 million for player five. That will leave the franchise with Rs 210 million to spend at the auction. This season, each squad must include no less than 16 and no more than 27 players, with a maximum of nine overseas players. The amount deducted from the auction purse is not necessarily the IPL fee agreed to between the franchise and the retained player. In 2011, apart from Dhoni and Raina, Super Kings had retained India batsman M Vijay and South Africa allrounder Albie Morkel. The pair missed out this time, along with former Australia batsman Michael Hussey, who was IPL 2013’s leading run-getter. Super Kings tweeted confirmation of their list of retained players late on Thursday night.

CSA look to advance India's tour match

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has conveyed to the Indian team that it wishes to advance the two-day tour game in Benoni to Friday and Saturday, so that it doesn’t clash with former president Nelson Mandela’s funeral on Sunday

Sidharth Monga08-Dec-2013Cricket South Africa (CSA) has conveyed to the Indian team that it wishes to advance the two-day tour game in Benoni to Friday and Saturday, so that it doesn’t clash with former president Nelson Mandela’s funeral on Sunday. Saturday was originally supposed to be the first day of the match. The home board now awaits a no-objection nod from India before finalising the rescheduling. If India agree, they will now get a one-day break between the final ODI and the tour game.CSA is also most likely to move the fourth day of the Dolphins-Titans game in Durban to Monday. That match is scheduled to be played from December 12 to December 15, but the fourth day, if needed, will be played on the 16th.

Stokes wins Cricket Writers' award

Ben Stokes, the Durham and England allrounder, has capped an impressive season by winning the Cricket Writers’ Club Young Cricketer of the Year award. Derbyshire’s Wayne Madsen, who led the Division One batting averages for most of the season despite his county’s eventual relegation, took the William Hill County Player of the Year award. The recognition for Stokes, who is part of England’s Ashes squad to tour Australia, comes less than ten months after he was sent home from a Lions tour for indulging one late night too many. He will now hope that he can follow the 2012 winner, Joe Root, in becoming one of a number of recipients of the award to subsequently establish themselves in the full England side.Stokes has been capped by England in the limited-overs formats, making his debut in 2011 and taking a maiden five-wicket haul against Australia earlier this month. His impressive displays in the ODI series spurred a call-up to England’s Test party for the first time and he could eventually be asked to fill the allrounder position. As part of Durham’s Championship-winning side, Stokes scored 615 runs at 27.95 and took 42 wickets at 26.57. His father, Ged Stokes, played rugby league for New Zealand, but Ben went to school in the northeast after the family moved to England. He played for Cockermouth CC before progressing through the Durham academy.Stokes is the first Durham player to win the award, which is voted for by CWC members. Eligible candidates must have been under 23 on May 1.Madsen, the captain of Derbyshire, was the second winner of the CWC county award, after Nick Compton in 2012. The 29-year-old made 1221 runs at the top of the order as Derbyshire kept their hopes of Division One survival alive into the final round of the Championship. He was the first batsman to cross 1000 Championship runs and finished as the second-leading scorer in the division, behind Yorkshire’s Gary Ballance. The South Africa-born Madsen, who has been with Derbyshire since 2009, was also recently named the inaugural winner of the Christopher Martin-Jenkins Spirit of Cricket Elite Award, created by MCC and the BBC to acknowledge exceptional sportsmanship, for walking during a crucial Championship match against Yorkshire. The winners will be presented with their awards at the annual Cricket Writers’ Club lunch in London on Monday.

Trent Copeland again shone with the ball as he took four wickets on the second day of against Hampshire at Wantage Road. After losing the toss and being made to bat by the Division Two leaders, Hampshire closed on 149 for 5 as bad light brought an early finish with Liam Dawson making an obdurate 57 not out off 179 balls. Australia paceman Copeland returned figures of 4 for 49 from 28 over to give Northamptonshire the upper hand in what is his penultimate Championship game before he returns home. After the first day was washed out without a ball being bowled, Northamptonshire won the toss and chose to bowl first in overcast conditions. And they made a breakthrough with just the fourth ball of the match when Hampshire captain Jimmy Adams was superbly taken by wicketkeeper David Murphy off David Willey for a duck.Fellow opener Michael Carberry only made 10 before he was caught at second slip by David Sales off Copeland. The visitors crawled to 30 for 2 off the 24 overs that were possible in the morning but they lost James Vince in the fourth over after lunch when he was trapped lbw by Copeland.Copeland switched to the pavilion end in the 39th over and, two balls in, pinned Sean Ervine lbw after the former Zimbabwe international had made 26. The fifth-wicket pair of Dawson and Adam Wheater then moved Hampshire on to 114 for 4 before bad light forced the players off.The delay meant an early tea and the loss of five overs, but only another five were possible before the light dimmed again early in the evening session. Five more overs were trimmed from proceedings as a result, but the latest stoppage did not affect Dawson’s concentration as he completed a watchful half-century off 165 balls. However, Copeland struck yet again when he took out the off stump of Wheater, who had batted brightly in making 40 off 54 deliveries. Bad light intervened yet again with 25 overs still scheduled, and after rain finally set in umpires Mark Benson and Steve Garratt decided to call it a day at 6:05pm.A result now looks unlikely, but Northamptonshire will still be looking for quick wickets tomorrow morning with Dawson now joined at the crease by Mike Roberts, who will resume on 2.

RCB captain Rajat Patidar recovering from finger injury

Rajat Patidar would have missed a couple of IPL 2025 games had the league continued as scheduled

Shashank Kishore11-May-20253:10

Is it time to start dreaming for RCB fans?

Rajat Patidar, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain, is currently recovering from a finger injury that would have ruled him out for at least two matches had IPL 2025 not been temporarily suspended due to cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. The tournament’s temporary pause has given him at least a week’s time to recover without missing matches.Patidar suffered the injury while fielding during RCB’s home game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on May 3. He was advised to wear a splint to protect the finger and refrain from training for at least 10 days before the injury could be assessed.RCB is being cautious with Patidar’s recovery, keeping in mind his availability for the IPL playoffs and also his possible selection for the upcoming India A tour of England. The squad for the tour is expected to be announced in the coming days.Related

On Saturday, Patidar returned to Bengaluru from Lucknow with the rest of the RCB squad. Despite the setback, he was optimistic about playing the remainder of the IPL season should it resume in the next week following the announcement of the ceasefire between India and Pakistan on Saturday evening. With Patidar injured, Jitesh Sharma was in line to lead RCB against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Friday before the BCCI suspended the IPL for a week on May 8.”I was very grateful for the opportunity given to me,” Jitesh said on RCB Bold Diaries. “They were giving me an opportunity to captain RCB and it’s a very big thing for me and my family. I was thinking of what the right combination would be because both Devdutt [Padikkal] and Rajat were not available, and it was a big responsibility to replace them.”And as per the position we were on the points table, we would have won this game. All of this was going on in my head and all the meetings with coaches and players in those two-three days, batting order, discussions with bowlers. I had good fun.”Patidar’s injury is one of several RCB have suffered before the IPL was suspended. Opening batter Phil Salt was down with illness and was replaced in the XI by Jacob Bethell; Padikkal was ruled out of the season with a hamstring injury and replaced in the squad by Mayank Agarwal; and Josh Hazlewood had suffered a shoulder injury. As of Sunday, all of RCB’s overseas players and coaching staff had left India but were asked to remain on standby to return should the tournament restart.RCB were second on the points table when the IPL was interrupted, with eight wins and three defeats from 11 games. Their remaining three fixtures are an away game against LSG, and home matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) but those venues could change depending on how the IPL rejigs the schedule for the rest of the season.
