Spurs: Source makes big Conte claim

Tottenham Hotspur manager and big name Antonio Conte is now eyeing an unceremonious exit at the end of the season, according to reports.

The lowdown: Conte’s tenure so far

Appointed in November 2021 following the dismissal of Nuno Espirito Santo, Spurs fans had cause for optimism when the 52-year-old taskmaster arrived in north London.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Conte arrived with Tottenham in ninth place and some five points adrift of the Premier League top-four pacesetters. Since then the Lilywhites’ have enjoyed an upturn in fortunes and the January arrivals of Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur have provided a much-needed boost to the ranks.

However, currently sitting fifth and with UEFA Champions League qualification still in the balance, the ex-Italian national team boss could already be debating his options.

The latest: A worrying claim…

As per Grenier on Twitter, relaying a report from Le Parisien, Conte is believed to harbour a desire to take over the hot seat at Paris Saint Germain should Mauricio Pochettino be relieved of his duties in the French capital.

Former Spurs boss Pochettino has come under fire in recent weeks after PSG were eliminated from the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid and it appears that potential replacements could already be lining up.

Le Parisien go as far to state that Conte has set his sights on a move to Paris, speaking about it to their club chiefs and becoming confident he can take over from Pochettino.

As shared by Grenier, the outlet claim: “Antonio Conte dreams of coaching PSG next season. He spoke about it to employees, showing himself confident about the feasibility of a transfer. He has let emissaries from Qatar know he is interested, but he is not the first choice. (The Parisian).”

The verdict: Big blow

Given Conte’s track record of only spending small periods of time in any one job and an initial 18-month deal, it was only ever likely to be a short term love affair at N17 but having all but won the managerial lottery with the appointment of the decorated Italian, Tottenham will no doubt be reluctant to cut ties with Conte so prematurely.

Albeit Spurs haven’t pulled up any trees just yet with the new man at the helm, there has been incremental improvement in recent months and with a full summer transfer window under his belt, it appears to be an exciting proposition moving forwards.

Whilst the club would be steadfast against the idea, should the PSG interest from all parties materialise then it may not be out of the realms of possibility that the eternally linked Pochettino finally makes an eagerly anticipated return to north London.

Wahab Riaz ruled out of South Africa series

Left-arm seamer Wahab Riaz has been ruled out of the ongoing Test series between Pakistan and South Africa due to a muscle strain

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Nov-2010Pakistan left-arm seamer Wahab Riaz has been ruled out of the ongoing Test series against South Africa due to a muscle strain. His absence is a blow to Pakistan, who are left with Umar Gul as their lone frontline seamer in their current Test in Dubai.”Riaz has suffered a side strain on the right side and needs four to five weeks for recovery before rehabilitation, so he will return to Pakistan after the first Test,” Intikhab Alam, the Pakistan team manager, told . He added there would be no replacement for Riaz in the squad, and that leaves Mohammad Sami and Sohail Tanvir as possible new-ball partners for Gul in Abu Dhabi for the second Test which starts on November 20.Riaz, 25, had an impressive start to his Test career, with a five-for on debut against England at The Oval earlier in the year. On Friday, he picked up two wickets in South Africa’s first innings but was unable to bowl on the second day of the Test as a result of his injury. Gul and the spin pair of Abdur Rehman and Saeed Ajmal stepped up, however, to bowl out South Africa for 380 after they had dominated the opening day.

Leicestershire fall short despite Taylor ton

Warwickshire Bears strengthened their grip at the top of the Clydesdale Bank 40 Group C table with a 25-run victory over Leicestershire Foxes, despite a brilliant unbeaten century and career-best bowling figures from James Taylor.Warwickshire opener Neil Carter laid the foundations for the Bears’ win with the third limited-overs century of his career, scoring 101 out of their challenging total of 272 for 8. Then Taylor launched a spectacular one-man bid for victory, hitting a blistering 103 off 95 balls, reaching three figures off the last delivery of the match to post his career-best limited-overs score.Earlier, he took four wickets for the first time with his occasional leg-spin bowling, but, ironically, his final over went for 21 runs, giving him figures of 4-61 in six overs. The Bears were able to plunder 56 runs off the last five overs, and, in the end, that proved to be the difference between the two sides. The total always looked a little too much for the Foxes to chase, but Taylor’s superb innings kept them in with a chance until the final few overs. By then, the run rate had climbed beyond their reach, and all that remained was for the 20-year-old to reach his century, which he did with a boundary off the last ball of the match from Carter. His century included eight boundaries plus two superb sixes, but there was no one else able to really take the game to the Bears. The next-highest scorer was James Benning, who hit 46 off 42 balls with seven fours and a six, while Matt Boyce contributed 33 down the order. But the Bears’ bowling was always good enough to keep the Foxes’ innings under control, with Carter, Boyd Rankin and the impressive Keith Barker claiming two wickets each. The centrepiece of the Bears’ innings was Carter’s century, which came off 92 balls and contained 17 boundaries. He and Bears captain Ian Westwood shared a key partnership of 112 in 18 overs after the visitors had lost three wickets for 21 runs in seven overs.Carter could have been out on 37, but survived a stumping chance as he came down the pitch to off-spinner Jigar Naik, and he made the Foxes pay for that slip-up.Westwood was no slouch either, contributing 47 off 60 balls before being caught down the leg side by Joel Pope off the bowling of Dan Masters. But Carter reached his century with successive boundaries off Taylor, and was then bowled by the next delivery from the leg-spinner.Although Taylor picked up three more wickets as the Bears’ batsmen chased runs, it came at a cost, and when he was hit for two sixes and two fours in his final over, the Bears had piled up an imposing total.

West Ham: Hinchcliffe lauds Rice

Sky Sports co-commentator Andy Hinchcliffe was full of praise for West Ham midfielder Declan Rice during the Hammers’ 2-1 victory against Everton on Sunday afternoon.

The lowdown: Ever rising stock

The 23-year-old has enjoyed a rapid rise to prominence over the last two seasons and has quickly become one of the first names on the team-sheet for both club and country.

Despite failing to make the headlines thanks to Aaron Cresswell’s stunning strike and the goalscoring return of Jarrod Bowen, the man recently heralded as a £150million player was at the heart of yet another workmanlike victory for David Moyes’ side.

As per Sofascore, the midfield enforcer enjoyed 95 touches, blocked two shots on goal and completed an outstanding 77/82 passes (94%%) in a 7.20/10-rated outing.

The latest: Praise from Hinchcliffe

Speaking during Sky Sports’ live coverage at the London Stadium, ex-Everton man Hinchcliffe was full of praise for Rice: “Such an important player. He provides that screen in front of the West Ham backline and gets back in time and time again. He reads the game so effectively.”

That reading of the game was evident in the performance against the Toffees as the 29-cap England ace completed three interceptions during 90 minutes (Sofascore) to help the hosts towards three points.

The verdict: Colossus

Even in light of the eye-watering valuations being branded about, Rice continues to justify the plaudits with each passing display.

Seemingly capable of taking each and every game in his giant stride, the £67.5million-valued star has blossomed as a player under the tutelage of Moyes in east London and so far this season has added eight direct goal contributions to an already well-rounded game (Transfermarkt).

With the dominant Englishman in this kind of form, West Ham supporters may feel a tilt at the Premier League top four and possible Europa League glory is not beyond the realms of possibility.

Paul Horton made a fine century and James Anderson continued his superb returnto the Lancashire line-up with two second-innings wickets as the visitors tookcontrol against Essex at Chelmsford.Resuming on 83 for 3 after Anderson’s six wickets had helped dismiss thehosts for 176, Lancashire reached 312 on the back of Horton’s 123.England paceman Anderson was soon adding to his list of victims after Essexembarked upon their second innings, removing Billy Godleman and John Maunderslbw in his first six overs – and before Essex closed on 46 for 2, he looked to havedismissed Jake Mickleburgh as well. The Essex youngster was given out by umpire Peter Willey as Anderson raced downthe wicket to take what he believed was a return catch.Mickleburgh, looking back and obviously unhappy, was halfway to the pavilionwhen he was called back after Willey and his colleague Nigel Llong, standing atsquare leg, conferred. It was ruled that the ball had come off the batsman’s helmet and he continued his innings to keep Alastair Cook company until the end.Much now will depend on Cook if Essex are to take the match into a final dayand make a fight of it. The England opener will resume on 29 fully aware of thehuge burden resting upon his shoulders.Lancashire’s innings was earlier built around Horton, who resisted for justover six hours before being the last man out. It was a largely patient innings that contained the occasional flourish – with 14 boundaries – and was brought to an end when he was caught behind by James Foster to provide Chris Wright with his third wicket.Horton’s major support came from Steve Croft, the pair adding 130 in 38 oversfor the sixth wicket. Croft’s share was 56, containing eight fours, before his defences were breached by Ryan ten Doeschate. But it was David Masters who emerged as Essex’s most successful bowler. Thepaceman finished with 4 for 81 from 29 overs and with a little bit more luckcould have reaped greater reward. He certainly beat the bat more than his colleagues, but young fast bowler Maurice Chambers also displayed a fair amount of hostility while picking up 2 for 58 from 23 overs. Essex go into the third day still requiring a further 90 to clear the arrears.

Phil Hay drops Tyler Roberts injury update

Phil Hay has dropped an update on the recent injury picked up by Leeds United forward Tyler Roberts.

What’s the latest?

In a recent post on Twitter, The Athletic journalist stated his belief that the 22-year-old, who went down unopposed with what appeared to be a calf injury midway through the second half of the Whites’ 3-1 win over Burnley on Sunday, looks as if he will need a considerable amount of time to recover from his knock.

In his tweet, Hay said: “Roberts looked like he’ll need time to recover from that injury.”

Fans will be fuming

Considering the sheer amount of injuries a number of Marcelo Bielsa’s side have sustained so far this season, the news that Leeds could be without Roberts for a substantial period of time as a result of yet another injury is sure to have left the Elland Road faithful fuming.

Indeed, Patrick Bamford, Kalvin Phillips, Liam Cooper and Pascal Struijk all also missed the fixture against Burnley as a result of various knocks, with Bielsa suggesting prior to kick-off on Sunday that Bamford could still be some way off a return to first-team football.

Should this be the case, the Argentine manager may well be left with 19-year-old Joe Gelhardt as his only option at centre-forward for the Whites’ trip to West Ham in the FA Cup on Sunday, something that, despite the youngster’s undoubted potential, would appear to significantly reduce United’s chances of securing a victory in the clash.

As such, should Roberts indeed be ruled out of action for a number of weeks, as Hay has suggested, it will certainly come as a major blow to Bielsa and his side, as the Whites are already incredibly thin on the ground.

Smith blitz puts New South Wales in command

Steven Smith’s third Sheffield Shield century for the summer put New South Wales in the prime position to take first-innings points against Tasmania. Alex Doolan brought up his second first-class hundred but was a lone fighter for the Tigers, who closed the day 295 runs behind with only four wickets in hand. The star of the day was Smith, who reached triple-figures with a boundary over midwicket from his 197th ball. Once he had passed the milestone, Smith lifted the tempo and struck his next 77 from 50 deliveries, finishing with five sixes in the 177 that was his best first-class score. When Smith skied a catch to mid-on, the New South Wales captain Stuart Clark called an end to the innings at 6 for 468 and Tasmania’s reply didn’t start well. Trent Copeland had the opener Rhett Lockyear lbw for 1 and he grabbed another three wickets to finish the day with terrific figures of 4 for 26 from 19 overs.Daniel Marsh (29) and Ed Cowan (22) were the only other batsmen besides Doolan to reach double-figures and at stumps James Faulkner was on 1 with Xavier Doherty on 4. Doolan’s 100 ended when he was lbw to Mitchell Starc but it continued a breakthrough season for Tasmania’s No. 3, who has made 612 runs this summer.

Phil Kirkbride delivers Everton update

Everton are entering a new era under the stewardship of manager Rafa Benitez, and there’s set to be significant unrest as the alterations take time to come to the fore.

What’s the story?

Former director of football Marcel Brands followed ex-board member Sarvar Ismailov in departing the Merseyside outfit last week as owner Farhad Moshiri attempts to usher in a new-look setup.

However, the changes perhaps won’t go far enough for some. The Liverpool ECHO’s Phil Kirkbride has provided a behind-the-scenes update on Everton’s of the club’s plans post-Brands, outlining their reluctance to make any ‘radical’ changes.

Kirkbride’s report states that: “The existing board are set to lead a ‘strategic review’ of the club’s football structure following Brands’ departure as director of football after three-and-a-half years.

“The ECHO has been told that there is not expected to be a ‘radical’ overhaul of the club’s scouting and medical operations but the powers are looking at ‘streamlining’ how they work.”

Everton fans surely fuming

In recent years, Everton have become a byword for underachievement. The arrival of Moshiri back in 2016 brought a new wave of hope and optimism as it seemed the club finally had the finances to support their true potential.

But the Blues’ hierarchy splashed their newfound wealth with reckless abandon, bringing in an extensive list of underwhelming purchases for astronomical fees.

The likes of Alex Iwobi, Theo Walcott and Davy Klaassen were brought in without much thought as to where they would play, what benefit they would bring to the team and whether or not their price tags represented value for money.

A recent report by Football365 outlined the net spending from Premier League clubs since Moshiri took over the reins at Everton. And it doesn’t make for pretty reading for the Toffees.

Only four clubs have splashed more than the Goodison Park outfit’s total of £233.92m during the Iranian businessman’s time at the club, with their limited spending in the most recent window due to Financial Fair Play regulations stopping them from being higher up the table.

Some of English football’s elite sides, such as Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and European Champions Chelsea have spent less than Everton in recent years, highlighting the gross mismanagement of the club.

Therefore, Kirkbride’s latest revelation will surely leave large sections of the fanbase fuming. League finishes of 7th, 8th, 8th, 12th and 10th have not offered a substantial return for their excessive outlay, meaning fundamental changes are needed.

If Everton are to finally catch up to English football’s elite, then a total revamp of their scouting operation and recruitment process is needed, not a token gesture. Everton fans should be rightfully fuming with this latest update.
