Gers fans love Lundstram signing

Many Glasgow Rangers fans are delighted after the club confirmed the signing of free agent John Lundstram.

The Gers have been heavily linked with a move for the midfielder in recent months (via Glasgow Live) ever since it became clear he would be leaving former club Sheffield United at the end of his contract. The 27-year-old impressed in particular during the 2019/20 campaign, the Blades’ first season back in the English top flight, as he scored five goals in 34 Premier League matches from the middle of the park (Transfermarkt).

Alan Nixon had previously revealed that the Gers could be set to announce Lundstram’s arrival, but the speed of the announcement has been a surprise. On Monday, the Ibrox outfit confirmed that the Liverpudlian has put pen to paper on a three-year deal (rangers.co.uk).

The news was later shared by Rangers’ official Twitter account and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on Lundstram’s arrival at Ibrox.

Lehmann says Ponting the man to steer Australia higher

Veteran batsman Darren Lehmann expects Ricky Ponting to steer Australian one-day cricket to a higher level after shining in South Africa during his first series as national captain.

Michael Crutcher08-Apr-2002Veteran batsman Darren Lehmann expects Ricky Ponting to steer Australian one-day cricket to a higher level after shining in South Africa during his first series as national captain.Ponting will end the series unbeaten if Australia wins the seventh match in Cape Town tomorrow night but his reputation as an aggressive captain has been cemented just three weeks after taking over from benchmark leader Steve Waugh. With Lehmann as a valuable on-field adviser, Ponting and vice-captain Adam Gilchrist have sparked one of Australia’s most impressive series in recent years.”He’s going to be a very good captain for Australia,” Lehmann said.”Who knows where he’ll be in 12 or 18 months? He’s developing into a bloody good captain.”Even from the Test series (last month) to here he has really stepped up his game. Maybe he was that sort of guy who needed those leadership roles.”Selectors harvested Ponting’s leadership skills at the right time because the Tasmanian had become a fixture in Australian Test and one-day teams with little formal responsibility. But he has developed the same ruthless and demanding signs that Waugh showed during his reign, even admitting his bowlers will be “embarrassed” by SouthAfrica’s massive 3-326 during Saturday’s match in Port Elizabeth. It was a straight answer from a captain who enjoys the full support of his players despite replacing one of Australian cricket’s favourite leaders.Ponting heads the Australian run tally with 282 runs from six matches, including 92 from 106 balls in the record-breaking run chase of 7-330 on Saturday. But Lehmann’s reputation has climbed alongside Ponting after he became the middle-order replacement for Waugh.Lehmann made 91 from 94 balls during a 183-run partnership with Ponting, becoming one of the “finds” of the tour despite his years of experience.Aged 32, and with 75 one-day international matches, Lehmann’s worth was well-known across the cricketing world but he has never seemed more important than during this tour, becoming an on-field general behind Ponting and Gilchrist.Ponting has rated Lehmann one of his most valuable players just three months after the left hander was deemed not good enough to play for Australia.”He’s one of the best one-day players in the world – I don’t think there’s any doubt about that,” Ponting said.”He loves playing cricket and being part of a successful team and it’s good for the young blokes to see that sort of thing, knowing they can come into the team and be themselves.”It’s important to have different characters around the team and he’s obviously a character and he enjoys himself.”He moves around his crease and changes the bowlers’ thinking process and it’s great that we have someone like him and Michael Bevan in our middle order toreally control an innings or a game for us.”The Australians will start short-priced favourites at Newlands without any argument from the South African fans, who are changing their view of the tourists. The home fans were originally depressed at the Proteas’ miserable Test and one-day performances against Australia this summer, but the visitors have earned a reputation as perhaps the best team to visit South Africa in the post-apartheid era.The Australians will fly out of Johannesburg for home on Wednesday having established themselves as the early favourites for the World Cup in Africa nextFebruary.

Crystal Palace dealt Radu Dragusin blow

A major update has emerged on Crystal Palace target Radu Dragusin regarding where he wants to play his football next season.

What’s the talk?

The Eagles have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of the Juventus centre-back as his agent Florian Manea revealed that the 19-year-old wants to stay with the Italian giants.

Manea has confirmed that Dragusin wishes to remain at Juventus despite offers to join clubs in England and Germany, telling Calcio Mercato, as transcribed by JuveFC:

“He wants to stay at Juventus, he does not want to leave. There have been offers from England and Germany, but he wants to play for Juventus. If you do your best, I believe that in the end you will get to play for Juve.

“If Dragusin does leave, it will just be on loan to get more playing time. But he wants to remain a Juventus player.”

Earlier this year, former Juventus head coach Andrea Pirlo called Dragusin an “interesting” player, telling Gazzetta dello Sport, as transcribed by TekDeeps: “Radu Dragusin did very well, he is a very interesting player who has been training with us for several months. He is a young man of perspective and has already demonstrated his qualities.”

Fans will be gutted

Crystal Palace fans must be gutted reading these quotes from Manea as they seemingly rule out the chance of Dragusin ending up at Selhurst Park this summer.

The teenager is desperate to stay at Juventus and there does not appear to be an opening to sign him permanently in the coming months, which could rule Palace out of the race for his services and provide a major blow to Steve Parish’s plans in the short and long-term for the club. Fans will surely be frustrated that they now look set to miss out on the young prospect following this update.

Whilst Manea has opened the door to a loan deal for Dragusin if Juventus have no plans to play him next season, Palace may not be able to provide him with regular game-time. At the age of 19, the Romanian is a prospect rather than an established player, and there is no way for Palace to guarantee that he will be able to start every week with the centre-back options they have at their disposal. Mamadou Sakho, James Tomkins, Martin Kelly, Chiekhou Kouyate, Gary Cahill and Scott Dann are already at the club, which could limit how much Dragusin is able to play next season if he joins the Eagles.

This would not be an issue with a permanent deal for the 1.91m (6 foot 3) beast, though. All of the aforementioned centre-back options for Palace are 31 or older and heading into the final years of their careers, whilst Dragusin is in the embryonic stages of his.

Therefore, he could be the long-term solution to Palace’s centre-back problems and has the potential to be a key player for years to come, even if it does not happen immediately. That is why a short-term loan deal would not make sense for Palace and why this news is a major blow to Parish’s pursuit of the defender.

Division 2 – Academy, Services, Easton still unbeaten

A half-century by Chris Benham and a four-wicket return by Irfan Shah set up a 73-run win for the Hampshire Academy XI against Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 rivals Winchester KS at River Park

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)13-May-2002A half-century by Chris Benham and a four-wicket return by Irfan Shah set up a 73-run win for the Hampshire Academy XI against Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 rivals Winchester KS at River Park.Second-wicket pair Benham (57) and 15-year-old Peter Hammond (48) laid the foundations for Hampshire’s 188-9.Winchester began positively but from 53-0 plunged to 115 all out, with Shah taking 4-33 and Dave Griffiths and James Manning two wickets each.Esaton & Martyr Worthy and United Services have also won their opening two games.Easton overhauled Hungerford’s 155 all out to win by three wickets, while Services rattled up 2476 to beat Rowledge (229) by 18 runs.Western Australian prospect Aaron Heal hit 108 and shared a century-plus second-wicket stand with Daniel Peacock (66) as Lymington beat Old Tauntonians and Romsey by 58 runs.Heal, who is playing for Hampshire II against Surrey at The Oval this week, shared a hefty century partnership with skipper Peacock, who was particularly ruthless on the left-arm spin bowling of OTR’s Nick Wood. With Ben Craft weighing in with 43 not out, Lymington advanced to 269-6 off 50 overs.Charlie Forward hit a watchful 61 for OTR, but a nap hand by former Bramshaw all-rounder Mike West (5-40), and Heal’s three-wicket return sent the visitors slipping from 168-5 to 211 all out.Andy Heyes (58) hit a second consecutive half-century but was again on the losing side as Sparsholt dipped to a 12-run defeat by Trojans at the Norman Edwards Memorial Ground.Simon Williams took 4-45 as Sparsholt, chasing Trojans’ 199 all out, tumbled from 88-1 to 187 all out.

Welcome to the 2002 season from Somerset Chief Executive Peter Anderson

We are on the verge of a new season, and all the achievements of the past year are behind us.Thank you for all your support and interest last season, but like the players we must now put that behind us even though I realise that your hopes and aspirations have been raised to unprecedented heights as a result of our success. We have a lot to be proud of at Somerset, our team is now very competitive and our ground is in very good shape. We are worried about the future but that must not detract from the immediate task in hand which is to provide competitive cricket for you all to watch and enjoy.I need your help though. You will be aware that in recent times there has been vociferous criticism of both the county game and the county championship. As you know on behalf of the club I publicly defend the standards of cricket and the rights of county clubs to exist and conduct their affairs in an ambitious manner. If you hear any unwarranted criticism on the airwaves or read about it in any publications please respond in a vigorous manner, either verbally or in written form. The battle cry is defend your county and defend county cricket! The truth of the matter is if that there wasn’t county cricket there would be no England side, and if there were no county clubs there would be no counties for cricket’s aspiring young to aspire to. This is as true for the Minor County teams as it is for the first-class counties. There is no doubt in my mind that under the excellent management team and backroom staff of Kevin Shine, Mark Garaway, Darren Veness and Andy Hurry our players are well prepared for the task in hand. All credit to the players as well for what they have been asked to do, which needs total commitment and all their physical energy. It makes me extremely weary just to watch them!

Pundit says David Moyes and Everton are a perfect match

Former Premier League manager Lawrie Sanchez believes that Everton and David Moyes are a match made in heaven.

Moyes made the Toffees top-six regulars during his first spell, leading the club into the Champions League for the first time ever, although they failed to qualify before he left to become the manager of Manchester United in 2012.

He’s managed Sunderland and Real Sociedad since then, and the 58-year-old is now being strongly linked with a sensational return to Goodison Park following Carlo Ancelotti’s recent departure.

The Scot’s contract at West Ham expires later this month but he’s widely expected to pen a new long-term contract at the London Stadium, which would likely end any speculation of him going back to Everton.

Ex-Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez and Nuno Espirito Santo have both been mentioned as possible replacements for Ancelotti, but Sanchez exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that none are better suited than Moyes:

“I think having seen what he’s done at West Ham this year, it’s a match made in heaven. His record at Everton was second to none and on the back of that, got the Old Trafford job.

“That would be a good fit for him. He knows the club inside out and now I think he will have a wage bill, and the launch of a new stadium, for him, I see that as an ideal match, and he hasn’t signed for West Ham yet.”

Celtic: MacAnthony confirms Dembele talks

Peterborough owner Darragh MacAnthony has confirmed conversations over a new deal for Celtic target Siriki Dembele have begun.

The Lowdown: Celtic’s interest

Celtic have been credited with an interest (Give Me Sport) in the 24-year-old in recent months.

Reports have suggested that a move for Dembele, who is the older brother of Celtic’s young talent Karamoko Dembele, could be part of a plan from the Hoops to keep the 18-year-old at Parkhead.

The Posh striker scored 11 times and registered 12 assists in 42 League One appearances this season, helping Peterborough win promotion to the Championship.

He’s out of contract this summer, however, MacAnthony is now looking to tie him down at London Road.

The Latest: MacAnthony’s Twitter post

MacAnthony was answering various questions on Twitter on Tuesday, and one involved Dembele.

He was quizzed if the club are close to agreeing on contracts with Dembele, Nathan Thompson and Dan Butler, to which he replied:

“Conversations now beginning with them all yes.”

The Verdict: A shrewd addition?

In our opinion, Celtic should be exploring a possible cut-price deal for Dembele. Not just because that may help keep his younger brother, who has been linked with a move away, at the club (although that may help), but because of his qualities.

The Peterborough man played in three positions during the current campaign, impressing in all of them.

He made 15 appearances as a centre-forward, 13 as a left-winger and 13 as an attacking midfielder, registering goals and assists in all areas.

That could come in handy under the new Hoops boss next season, especially with striker Patryk Klimala recently sealing an exit and winger Mohamed Elyounoussi set to return to Southampton following his loan spell.

Rowett drops hit on Zohore transfer

Millwall will not make a move to re-sign loanee centre-forward Kenneth Zohore this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to the Lions boss Gary Rowett, who claimed in a recent interview with News at Den that the West Bromwich Albion striker is unlikely to be a target for Millwall in the upcoming transfer window as a result of the 27-year-old’s poor record of injuries.

The 47-year-old manager said: “I think just Ken’s fitness, really, and injuries would make it difficult to pursue that any further. It’s probably unlikely that we would go back in for Ken.”

Fans will be buzzing

While Zohore was a player who arrived at The Den last October with plenty of promise, with Neil Warnock claiming that the striker is a “manager’s dream” to work with, as well as having scored 26 goals and provided 10 assists over his 94 appearances in the Championship prior to linking up with Rowett’s side, the £2.25m-rated man ultimately failed to live up to expectations during his time in Bermondsey.

Over his 17 league appearances for the club, only 10 of which came as starts, the 27-year-old scored just two goals, registered no assists and created no big chances, in addition to missing three big chances set up by his teammates.

The former Cardiff City man also managed an average of mere 0.4 shots on target per game in the Championship, as well as making an average of just 0.5 key passes in each of his appearances.

These metrics saw the Zohore earn a disappointing seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.65, ranking him as Millwall’s seventh-worst performer in the second tier.

As such, while his returns were undeniably affected by spending two long spells on the sidelines due to injury, with the centre-forward missing games from October 28 to January 2 and then again February 13 to April 2, the news that Rowett is not planning on bringing the West Brom man back to the club this summer is likely to leave Millwall fans buzzing – as his £16,500-per-week wages could easily be spent on a more reliable option – both in terms of fitness and goalscoring – in the upcoming transfer window.

Premier League: Wolves predicted XI v Brighton

After such an inconsistent campaign, Wolves no longer have anything to play for this season.

Nuno Santo’s team have performed well below par and as they gear up to face Brighton this afternoon, they will do so from 12th in the table.

Ambitions of qualifying for Europe have fallen by the wayside but it’s not been entirely the manager’s fault.

Wolves have suffered from a mind-blowing number of injuries this term with Jonny sustaining two ACL problems and Raul Jimenez fracturing his skull.

Pedro Neto has broken his knee cap while Willy Boly will miss the game on Sunday while he recovers from the after-effects of the ongoing pandemic.

With all this in mind, how will Wolves line up when they welcome Brighton to Molineux this weekend?

We’re tipping Nuno to make three changes to the side that drew with West Brom last time.

There is no place for Willian Jose in the side as Fabio Silva gets an opportunity to build on the goal he netted against the Baggies.

There is one change in the attack where Owen Otasowie drops out after his rare chance last weekend. With that in mind, Daniel Podence comes back into the fray in a wide position.

Vitinha gets another chance as the attacking midfielder after shining so bright at the Hawthorns.

The other change could be an enforced one. Wolves are currently sweating over the fitness of Rayan Ait-Nouri and if he can’t make the game, Max Kilman might come into the team.

The left-back replaced him towards the end of their clash with Albion but the £14k-per-week earner hasn’t actually started for the Old Gold since February 7th.

Boly misses out so it’s a centre-back pairing of Conor Coady and Romain Saiss again.

Joao Moutinho is back to full fitness so he replaces Leander Dendoncker in midfield for the third and final change in this XI. He has been absent for the last two matches with a minor ankle problem.

AND in other news, Wolves beast who became “ridiculous” under Nuno sees his value rise by 180% in 3 years…
