Celtic: Hutton makes Forrest prediction

Alan Hutton thinks James Forrest will travel with the Celtic squad for Sunday’s Scottish League Cup final against Hibernian.

The lowdown

Celtic travel to Hampden Park to battle Shaun Maloney’s Hibs for the first silverware of the season.

Forrest secured their place in the final with a 73rd-minute strike against St Johnstone in the last four, having come off the bench.

Now he’s one of a trio of Hoops players hoping to prove their fitness in time to feature in the showpiece, along with Kyogo Furuhashi and Mikey Johnston.

Ange Postecoglou said in his pre-match press conference that he would use Saturday’s training session at Lennoxtown to make an assessment.

The latest

BBC Sport pundit Hutton thinks that, regardless of the results of that fitness test, Forrest will be part of the group that heads to Edinburgh.

Even if he can’t contribute on the pitch, he says, his presence will still be valuable.

“Forrest has been there, done it, bought the t-shirt,” he told Football Insider. “He’s got a pocket full of medals.

“You do need that big-game experience. He’ll be there, he will probably travel with the squad and he can keep the squad going.”

The verdict

Hutton is certainly right about Forrest’s track record: the winger has won a whopping 20 trophies at Celtic. Nine of those are league titles, but 11 are cups, indicating that he knows what it takes to prevail in an one-off, winner-takes-all contest.

And beyond that, former team-mate Mohamed Elyounoussi says the ‘amazing’ Forrest is ‘a brilliant boy off the pitch as well’.

It would be a blow if he couldn’t play, but in Liel Abada, who has notched a respectable 11 goal contributions in his first season at Celtic, Postecoglou can call upon an able replacement, and having Forrest around the squad could certainly help the likes of the Israel international shine.

In other news, Hutton also dropped this intriguing claim on Albian Ajeti.

O’Hara shuts down Lingard return rumour

Former Premier League midfielder Jamie O’Hara believes there is no chance that Manchester United will allow Jesse Lingard to return to West Ham.

The Lowdown: Lingard excels at West Ham

The Hammers enjoyed an excellent 2020/21 season and Lingard ended up being one of their star men, despite only arriving on loan in January. The midfielder scored nine goals and registered four assists in just 16 Premier League appearances, becoming an instant crowd favourite in the process.

The 28-year-old returned to United at the end of the campaign, but he has again struggled for playing time at Old Trafford, failing to start a single league game in 2021/22.

The Latest: O’Hara has his doubts

Despite rumours linking Lingard with a return to West Ham, O’Hara doesn’t see it happening for a second time.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast on Monday [via Read West Ham], the 35-year-old insisted that Manchester United wouldn’t sell to the Hammers now that they are a direct rival. He said:

“As if Man United are going to allow Jesse Lingard to go to West Ham – they are above them in the table. That’s not going to happen, that’s competition.

“There is no way they are going to allow a top player, who was brilliant for West Ham when he went there. They aren’t going to allow him to go on loan there this season when they are in direct competition. That’s never going to happen.”

The Verdict: Ideal January arrival

David Moyes’ Irons are on fire at the moment, sitting third in the table and having the strongest group of players at the club in years. If Lingard were to come back in January, it would arguably feel like the icing on the cake, giving West Ham even more quality in midfield and attacking areas.

It is sad to see him getting so little game-time at Manchester United, with the 28-year-old someone who should be starting regularly for a top-flight club based off his performances at the start of 2021. He has been described as ‘brilliant’ by Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer despite the Norwegian continually overlooking him from his team selection.

However, as O’Hara says, it would be a surprise if Lingard were to return to the London Stadium this season considering that the Hammers are in a top-four battle with Manchester United.

Surrey swoop for Herath

Surrey’s attack has been boosted by the signing of Rangana Herath, the Sri Lanka spinner, who has joined the club until the end of the season

Cricinfo staff01-Sep-2009Surrey’s attack has been boosted by the signing of Rangana Herath, the Sri Lanka spinner, who has joined the club until the end of the season. He will make his debut for Surrey in their Championship clash against Gloucestershire at Bristol tomorrow, three days after his match-winning eight-wicket haul for Sri Lanka in their series-victory over New Zealand. Also set to make his Championship debut is Arun Harinath, 22, who has been rewarded for a series of strong second XI performances by being given the number three slot usually occupied by Mark Ramprakash, who fractured his left thumb in Surrey’s match against Kent last week.Herath, 31, has played 18 Tests for Sri Lanka and joins Surrey on the back of a match winning eight wicket haul in the second Test Match against New Zealand in Colombo, spinning his side to victory with 5 for 139 in the final innings. It is likely that the 22 year old Harinath, a graduate of the Surrey Academy, will bat at three in the side behind openers Jonathan Batty and Michael Brown, who put on 171 for the first wicket in last week’s game against Kent at Canterbury.Stuart Meaker is also expected to retain his place, while Alex Tudor has been added to the squad following impressive form for Surrey seconds.

Journalist hints at Traore leaving Wolves

Adama Traore could leave Wolves and still isn’t the finished article as a footballer, according to Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield.

The Lowdown: Traore still hit-and-miss

The 25-year-old is arguably one of the Premier League’s most entertaining players, given his remarkable pace and ability to dribble past players.

A lack of end product has always been Traore’s downfall, however, and despite some good performances this season, he is still yet to register a single goal or assist.

The Latest: Hatfield makes key claim

The Spaniard’s future at Wolves is up in the air, with a new contract not yet signed, and speaking to Give Me Sport, Hatfield suggested that he wouldn’t be a great loss now:

“It’s a lot of money to get for a player whose future isn’t guaranteed at the club.

“He is not the youngest player in the world anymore – it’s not like he’s 22 years of age.

“He’s pushed on from there now in terms of years on the pitch and we’re yet to see that end product really reveal itself on a consistent basis.”

The Verdict: Time to earn big money for him?

There is always hope that Traore will suddenly go up a gear and find consistency in the final third – Tim Sherwood has described him as ‘fantastic’ – but as each year passes, the more unlikely it feels.

As Hatfield alludes to, the wide man is 25 now and should be in and around his peak years, but he arguably remains as raw as he has ever been.

For this reason, if a huge bid comes in for Traore, Wolves should accept it, using the money elsewhere and moving on without him.

UK fraud office freezes Stanford's assets

Britain’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has frozen $US100 million (£60 million) of UK assets related to Allen Stanford, the Texan billionaire facing charges of fraud.”I am delighted the SFO has been able to secure a freezing order of this magnitude and within five hours of it being requested,” Richard Alderman, the SFO director, said. “I am determined that supporting our US counterparts in this way becomes a routine example of cross-border co-operation.”Last week Stanford appeared in a Houston court, handcuffed in an orange jump suit, and pleaded not guilty to charges of fraud, conspiracy and obstruction. He stands accused of fraud totalling US$7 billion (£4.3 billion), and the charges include seven counts of wire fraud, 10 counts of mail fraud, conspiracy to obstruct an investigation for the Securities and Exchange Commission, obstruction of an investigation by the SEC and conspiracy to commit money laundering.A federal judge will, later on Tuesday, decide on bail for Stanford, which would see him freed while he awaits trial. If convicted, he faces up to 375 years in jail.

Harris keen to impress Aussie selectors

Ryan Harris has said he is hoping to impress Australian selectors during his stint in the English domestic season

Cricinfo staff07-Jun-2009Ryan Harris, the Australia fast bowler, who recently signed up with Surrey and will represent them in the County Championship, has said he is hoping to impress Australian selectors during his stint in the English domestic season.”It’s in the back of my mind, obviously, but there’s a few guys in front of me,” he told BBC London 94.9. “If I’m here and performing well and the selectors want to look at me then it saves on the flight over, I guess.”Harris, who replaced New Zealand’s Grant Elliot as Surrey’s overseas player, made his ODI debut in January against South Africa at home, but missed the rest of the season as a result of a foot injury. He was a part of the victorious Deccan Chargers team in the IPL, playing eight games and capturing six wickets at 38.33.Harris was due to play his first County Championship fixture for Surrey on Saturday against Glamorgan, but the first day was abandoned due to persistent rain. However, he was looking forward to the experience. “It’s obviously a new thing for me having never played county cricket before,” he said. “To be at a club like Surrey, that have been such a good club in English cricket, is a great honour.”It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and it’s great to be here. It has been a dream to come and play in county cricket, to come and experience the gruelling schedule and a good example of that is coming up in the next three weeks.”Harris expressed his keenness to play competitive cricket while his domestic team Queensland spent its time training for the Australian cricket season which doesn’t start until later in the year. “It’s going to be a test but that’s why I’m here. I want to play cricket. My Queensland team-mates are training at home but they’re catching and doing drills and I want to play cricket, which is why I’m here.”The injury which had ruled him out earlier in the year, Harris believed, was now long behind him. “Coming from Twenty20, where I bowled a fair bit, to four-day cricket is a bit of a step but it’s not as if I’ve come from nothing into playing three or four-day games,” he said. “I feel good, the body feels good, my foot feels good and the jetlag’s not that bad at the moment so I’m just ready to go.”
